Callahan Security #3

Hit and Run (Callahan Security (Français) t. 3)

Rate this book

I grew up in a house filled with books and readers. Some of my fondest memories are of reading in the same room with my mother and sisters, arguing about whose turn it was to make tea. No one wanted to put their book down!
I was introduced to romance because of my mom’s habit of leaving books all over the house. One day I picked one up. I still remember the cover. It was a Harlequin by Janet Daily. Little did I know at the time that it would set the stage for my future. I went on to discover mystery novels. Agatha Christie was my favorite. And then suspense with Wilber Smith and Ian Fleming.
I loved the thought of combining my favorite genres, and during high school, I attempted to write my first romantic suspense novel. I wrote the first four chapters and then exams happened and that was the end of that. I desperately hope that book died a quiet death somewhere in a computer recycling facility.
A few years later, (okay, quite a few) after two degrees, a husband and two kids, I attended a workshop in Tuscany that lit that spark for writing again. I have been pounding the keyboard ever since here in New Jersey, where I live with my children—who are thrilled with my writing as it means they get to eat more pizza—and my very supportive husband.

I haven't read the first two books, but was in no way lost in the backstory. I didn't fell the spark or chemistry between Gage and Dani. I knew who the bad guy was but it sure took them a lllllooonnnggg time to figure it out. Plus there was a whole lot of running around and hiding and running around and hiding.

Hit and Run: A Thrilling Novel of Romantic Suspense
Callahan Security series Series #3

https://m.facebook.com/LoriMatthewsBooks
Release date 08/04/2020
Publisher Wild Coyote Press

Blurb :

Dani Pierce is a master of the dark web - but now trouble has arrived at her front door.

The self-reliant, fiercely independent hacker knows she’ll need help if she’s going to survive her latest contract to build cutting-edge facial recognition software.

And despite the fact the aggravating, yet handsome man hired to protect her makes it clear he’s just there to do a job... it doesn’t stop her from appreciating how ruggedly sexy he is.

Gage Callahan knew his latest assignment for Callahan Security would be a disaster.

He scoured all of Europe trying to locate the computer programmer he was hired to protect only to discover she’s actually a hacker hiding in Alaska.

It will take all his ingenuity to focus on the primary objective of getting her and the prototype software safely to New York…especially with a growing fatal attraction he’s developed for the spunky woman.

Dani’s in deeper than she’ll admit, but her answers don’t explain why those who want her dead are always one step ahead.

It will take his military skills and her hacking know-how to save their lives and the undeniable fire that’s developed between them in the face of danger.

My review :

Will they find in themselves to accept the other completely...

I confess I had this book downloaded but it’s Netgalley release date was set in two weeks. Yet an other author sponsored it as being released yesterday.
Gosh!
So I switched my reading schedule to add it for today.
I did not know the author but from time to time, I love a good romantic suspense.
Dani and Gage are two persons very set on their way, both so stubborn they will nearly blow to dust their relationship before understanding how each was relying on the other.
Dani did not grew up in a loving environment, so after the abuse she suffered in her foster home, it is understandable she could not follow a straightforward path. She made herself and choose her own path. Not a clear road but one bordering shadows and laws.
Gage is the down to the rules guy, he believes in laws and justice not in chaos. He is honorable and his words are vows he always keeps.
So Dani is his antithesis, worse his nemesis since his best friend’s death.
It was fun to watch them working together, trusting then doubting, going for the jugular then putting their life in the line of sight.

I haven’t read the previous books but Gage’s brothers were fun. While the end contains the most of the emotional scenes.

The third book in the Callahan Security series a well written emotional story that is well written, with a very good storyline. This is Dani Pierce, her sister Carly, and Gage Callahan's story there is suspense, drama, danger, and romance. This is a new Author to me, and I want to read more in this series. I received a copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Hit & Run is a book that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

A quick aside: I will admit that going into this read, I did not realize it was the third in the series. This is an issue that was 100% on me because I simply didn’t pay attention. I didn’t find out until I actually went to post my review on GoodReads and read someone else’s review that mentioned this. That alone should speak to the fact that Ms. Matthews did an excellent job making Hit & Run function fully as a standalone, something that can be hard to do.

Now for the actual review:

I’m a huuuuuge fan of romantic suspense. Huge. So when I read the blurb, I snatched this bad boy off of NetGalley with a swiftness. Add in a bit of enemies-to-lovers and I am digging it big time.

In the beginning we meet a grumpy Gage. Which I find entirely too charming. Okay, that’s not the actual beginning, the actual beginning involves a body flying through the air, but I digress…

Our boy has a legitimate reason to be a bit ticked off after scouring Europe for a woman he’s been hired to protect only to learn she was in the US. Let’s not forget that once he finally finds Dani, he gets a shaky shotgun pointed directly at his forehead and… Yeah, I kinda understand the grump.

Dani is a genius hacker who… has made some bad decisions. Some very bad decisions. Since I know people in real life who are very smart and completely lack common sense, I have lumped Dani into that category. Sorry, doll, you can’t “borrow” secret code from a government and expect it to all be peachy keen.

Yep, she did that.

And now that she has people after her to the extent that they killed her doppelganger in a hit and run, Gage is charged with protecting her. They flee the Alaska town where Dani had been hiding to try to find some place that is safe enough to regroup, eliminate the threat, and get her back to her normal life.

But, their time on the run has resulted in a spark that turned into a massive flame as the chemistry between them exploded on the page.

Ms. Matthews does an exceptional job of world-building and her descriptions are so lush and rich that I am green with envy over her immense gift with words. You are immediately sucked into Gage and Dani’s world… for better or worse.

Hit & Run is a fast-paced romantic suspense with a delicious enemies-to-lovers trope and a deep looming threat that Ms. Matthews did an excellent job chilling my bones with.

3.5* ARC Review – Hacker in Hiding
This is the third book in the Callahan Security series, and I have read all of them through the Hidden Gems ARC program. When this was available, I enthusiastically requested the ARC because I enjoyed the other books in the series. Although you do not have to read the other books before reading this one, it might give you an idea of how far the brothers have come. The brothers run a security business that has been working for a client who is trying to develop an enhanced facial recognition program.
In this book, the author takes us closer to the program that has been the quest of the other books. For this story Gage Callahan is following the hacker, Dani, who has been working on the system that his client requested. Gage is there for security as others are after this technology and might be willing to harm Dani to get it. As the book opens, we find Dani in Alaska and she has realized that the people who are after her might be close when Gage shows up to get her back to New York.
The book takes us on an interesting adventure to get Gage and Dani back to New York from Alaska. There is a lot of action and intrigue in this story and it keeps you reading. My only issue is that I was not a big fan of Dani as a character. At times she seemed quite afraid and that seemed to paralyze her. I am not saying it was not justified, but it made it hard to see her as this independent, law bending hacker. The relationship between Dani and Gage was at times sweet but also could be peculiar because she was shown as being quite young and scared most of the time.

Updated*3.5-3.75 stars

I had the chance to receive a new copy of this from NetGalley that fixed the issues that I had with the e-copy I had originally gotten. Thank goodness. Whereas in that book I could hardly read it, I finally got to get into the story and was much better than I anticipated it. I had not read the previous books in this series and did not feel as if I was missing anything, other than the interest to see the previous characters in their own stories.

Enemies to lovers is a favorite trope of mine, so this book had that going for it. I enjoyed Gage and Dani but there was some spark missing. I wanted more. Even as great as the beginning of the story was somehow it fizzled a little. I am glad that I came back to the book and gave it another chance as it was enjoyable, It just had the promise to be so much more.

This is a well-written story. I really liked the two main characters, Danielle Pierce and Gage Callahan. I kept rooting for them as I read. There's plenty of action and the storyline is fast-paced. This is the third book in Ms. Matthews' Callahan Security series. I haven't read the first two books in the series but I believe this book works as a standalone.

“Hit and Run” continues to star the swoon worthy Callahan brothers, with this third book shining the spotlight on the final sibling, Gage Callahan.  Almost as irresistible as the Callahan men, are the sights author Lori Matthews sets them against in this series finale.

Tracking down Drake’s hacker, Dani, has been anything but smooth sailing for Gage Callahan. So, when he finally finds her, he expects a warmer welcome, he is trying to save her life after all.  Dani’s cold shoulder only gets cooler as Gage forces her on a cruise ship, the only way out of Alaska on short notice given the impending storm, but how is Gage to know Dani is paralyzingly scared of water.  The intensity only ratchets up from there as the two become forcefully entangled in each other’s lives and hearts.

The problem with a great series is that you never want the story to end, each book is cherished that much more as you drive toward the finish line.  It is for that reason I delayed reading this book for so long, because turning the final page in “Hit and Run” meant the Callahan Security Series was really ending.  The second problem with a magnificent series is that each successive book is constantly being compared to the last.  For instance, book one, “Break and Enter,” got the fire going, starting this series off hot!  Book two, “Smash and Grab,” brought us comfort in Matthews’ writing as we were transported to a tropical island with more of the swoony Callahan men.  So, book three almost begins to feel like a letdown in comparison as we forego the European and tropical vacations for an Alaskan cruise ship.

However, book three successfully continues to showcase Matthews’ passionate love scenes, albeit with a more forced chemistry than we are used to – blame it on Dani’s fear of water and the added “nerdiness” of the characters portrayed.  The writing also felt more rushed as the villains were right on their heels the whole book, seemingly one step ahead of Gage the whole time.  But, “Hit and Run” continues to pack the punch we’ve become accustomed to with Matthews’ writing.  “Hit and Run,” as well as the entire Callahan Security Series, stands above the pack as one of the more unique, engaging and engrossing romantic suspense trilogies out there.  Each book reading successfully as a standalone or as an all encompassing series, just be warned, while “Hit and Run” brings with it the end of the Callahan Security era, it will also leave you mourning the loss of an amazing cast of characters and thrills.

The story wasn’t bad in all honesty. It’s just that I didn’t connect to it as much as I did with other stories. I liked that the author tried to make little things as realistic as possible.

At first, I didn’t really feel the attraction and chemistry between Gage and Dani. I felt that it was just slapped on from their first meeting😶.

However, slowly overtime their chemistry became clearer for me and not forced. Gage has a short fuse and Dani is a stubborn girl.

Dani hasn’t cried in years and over the last couple days during her ordeal, she practically cried every single time. I mean I’m being harsh, 😂anyone is her situation would feel like her no judgment there sis. But I wished Dani would just toughen up in some situations, but hey that’s just how the author made the heroine🤷🏻‍♀️no problem.

I didn’t love Gage but I defo liked him more than Dani. I mean there were times I wanted to smack him in the head 🙄 judging Dani for her profession because of his past and called her a harlot in anger....I mean srsly dude😐. Ovsly he felt bad later when he came to his senses. So it’s all good then👍.

Honestly I wished the author put a bit more mystery on who the “mole” was because I kind of figured it out way before the characters did. But I liked the twist where it wasn’t the government who was after them but someone else (ssshhh).

*****SPOILER*****

My FAVOURITE part in the book would be the love and connection between Dani and her sister, Carly. Near the end of the book, Dani goes back to the hospital where her sister is staying, during her last few hours that is left of her life.
I felt more connected during their moment than the whole book💗. I loved the goodbye!! (Yes I loved a heartbreaking scene because it was so beautiful)

I also loved how Gage was there outside, waiting for Dani after the goodbye. Probably my favourite moment between those two.

*****.*****
Overall I want to give this book 3 stars ⭐️. It can be read as an standalone, I wasn’t confused while reading the book. However I do recommend reading the previous 2 books so that u understand the story as a whole. Xx

Gabe and Dani do not trust each other when they first meet. He saw his best friend die in Iraq due to the enemy had hack into military intelligence and gave them the wrong information. Gage had been ordered to find his friend and attempt to save him - he was too late. To this day Gage had never trusted hackers.

Dani does not trust easily after being raised in the foster care system - her foster mom was abusive to her as she was growing up. Dani remembers her foster mother forcing her to learn to swim by forcing her in deep water and to survive by swimming to her. To this day Dani can not be around the ocean or a large body of water without having a panic attack,.

Dani and Gabe meet after he has been attempting to find her in Europe to protect her against someone attempting to kill her . Dani has managed to keep her location in Alaska a secret until a woman resembling her is killed. Dani calls her contact to request help with keeping her alive.

Gabe learns after meeting Dani that she was hired to hack and develop a face recognizing software for a major hotel company. She stole the main program from China and believes they are trying to kill her to get the program back.

The story read like a comedy of errors, but it also is an action adventure, ex-military story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout the story..

This is the 3rd book in the series but it can absolutely be read as a stand alone. Gage Callahan has been going all over Europe trying to find the hacker he has been hired to protect, only to find out she is in Alaska. And when she almost becomes roadkill, it will take everything he is to keep her safe. Dani Pierce is used to working on the dark web. But now trouble has come to her doorstep, and she knows she needs help in order to stay alive. And although the man hired to protect her acts like he hates her, she knows she will have to trust him in order to stay safe.

Ok so as someone who really loves romantic suspense books, this one sounded like it would be great. And it definitely had the potential. And while parts of it are good, like the suspense for me was decent, the writing itself is good-the romance didn't live up to what I was expecting. I didn't feel like the characters actually liked each other let alone were falling in love with each other. My other issue was that it seemed like the bad guy was very easy to spot but it took forever for them to realize who it was? It was slightly weird to me. On a whole, it wasn't bad-but it definitely isn't one that I loved and would reread over and over again.

Dani loves her work as a hacker. She knows that she wants to help others because she doesn’t always know the best way to do so. With her job, she can pick and choose jobs to make sure she’s doing such. Since she has lived a life with no family, she knows that taking a job to search for a family member is important. She lives by her own set of moral codes and will do what she can to help.

Gage is very much a guy who believes in the laws and rules that are set out, and those rules are never to be broken. When he’s sent to watch over Dani, it's not an ideal job for him. His best friend was killed at the hands (and/or words) of a hacker. He doesn’t believe in any honor when it comes to what her job is. He’s determined to finish the job and be done.

Their journey is a lot of ups and downs, trying to dodge the bad guys who are willing to do whatever it takes to get their hands on Dani. They have to work together to both come out of this crap alive. The overall story is suspenseful, intriguing, and steamy! I loved their story and I will be going back to read the other books in the series. Well done!

3.5 Stars. This is one of those Series that starts with a bang in Book 1, but the following books don’t quite measure up. I debated between 3 and 4 Stars, and it really is a 3.5 rating for me.
Of course, it’s Gage’s turn as the leading man. His assignment is to find and protect the programmer of the prototype. Dani isn’t what he expected. Things don’t go as plan, as Dani and Gage have to escape the villains.
For the storyline, it felt like Gage had to find Dani irresistible. The romance felt forced. The suspense part went off the rails mid-way through. The romantic scenes and the mystery finally got in balance towards the end of the book. I had a feeling about the “mole” and I was correct. There were a couple emotional scenes that saved this very average story with a rather weak plot.
The author did a fine job with the characters of the Callaghan brothers throughout the series. They are all former military, yet she avoided making them over the top alpha males. They knew their limitations and depended on each other. Logan, Gage, and Mitch all certainly have unique taste in women, as their ladies like pushing the boundaries of the law.

❤️❤️❤️

I think this one is my favorite so far!!

Gage finally finds Dani - Drake’s coding genius. Her house as already been tossed and someone else with her description has just been hit and killed by a car. They gotta get outta there fast!

The only transportation leaving because of a big storm is a cruise ship, which they load at the last possible second. There is one HUGE problem though… Dani is absolutely terrified of the ocean. She keeps having panic attacks every time she see it through the windows or deck.

She is working as hard as she can to keep their identities secure and also change the cameras/feed of them so that they can stay safe, while also continuing to work on the code.

Throughout this crazy stressful tome, Dani and Gage are not able to stay away from each other and are constantly driving each other crazy in good and bad ways 🤣

Who is the leak? How do the bad guys keep finding them if there hasn’t been a digital trail? How will they keep the code safe? What is wrong with Gage?

Character I want to smack…. That foster mom 🤬
Character I totally wish I could meet… Dottie omg I love her!

Our heroine is an expert hacker, but she is in a bit over her head. That is where our hero comes in, but he brings some complications of his own, like the growing attraction between them.

This is book three of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading is required to enjoy this book.

This is an excellent example of a romantic suspense story. It is well written and easy to read with two excellent, well developed characters. The plot is fast paced and includes plenty of action and intrigue as well as twists and turns, all of which make for a captivating read. Both our hero and heroine are also smart and resourceful, which is just how I like them. While there are the occasional issues, they make an great team and it is fun to watch the developing relationship between them. Overall, this was a great story and I look forward to going back and reading the previous books as well.

Highly recommended.

When I was in college, I used to binge read romantic fiction by Mills and Boon. Gradually, the interest in those books faded as I developed an inclination towards more diverse stories. However, reading Hit and Run took me back to those lovely/ dreamy days when thinking about your prince in the shining armour was considered normal. The story opens in Juneau, Alaska. Dani, a young, fierce and resolute woman is on the run, hiding from the people who want to get hold of the facial-recognition software that she is building. She is a ‘hacker’ who breaches the security as if it were a piece of cake! Hired for her protection is Gage, a tall, fair and handsome man who makes her go weak in the knees (only figuratively. The story pans around their escape, obstacles, loss, fatal attraction and the aftermath of an unprecedented adventure.

Hit and Run is book 3 in the Callahan Security series by Lori Matthews (read my reviews of book one and book two) and while it's an entertaining read and better than book two, in my opinion it's still not as good as book one.
I had high expectations for this book, but in the end both main characters disappointed me a bit, especially Gage - for all his military background, his just doubts himself too much. And there are several details in the plot that never made complete sense to me - in particular Gage's insistence that he has to go to the gym in the middle of what, in the end, is a rescue operation.
Ultimately each of the books can be read as a stand alone, but the background plot is common and develops along the three installments of the series.
Overall, if you love the genre, my advice is that you should start with book one and go from there.

This is the first book I’ve read by Lori Matthews, but I’ve already purchased Logan and Mitch’s books. I can’t wait to read their stories, as soon as time permits. Hit and Run is a suspenseful book with a wonderful side of romance. Dani is trying to come up with face recognition software, but there are people trying to get to her. Her boss, Jameson Drake, hires Callahan Security to protect her and this is how she meets Gage. Please do yourself a favor and grab this wonderful book, but be prepared to shed a few tears in one certain section. I’m so glad I found another new to me author and it was a bonus to end up enjoying the book as much as I did.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Gage Callahan, Callahan Security, has finally located Dani Pierce. He was hired to protect Dani who is a world class hacker. She has “borrowed” technology for the facial recognition software she is working on and that someone is not happy. When a woman who looks like Dani is killed in a hit and run, Dani knows that someone wants her dead. As Gage tries to figure out who is after Dani, they board a cruise ship thinking that they will be safe, but somehow the men after Dani always seem to be one step ahead. This was the third book in the series and although I had not read the first two, I didn’t feel as if I was missing any of the backstory. This was my first experience reading this author's work and even though this was the 3rd book in this series, I was able to follow along without having read the first two. I received a copy from NetGalley and I was unable to read it due to some corrupted files so I was graciously given a PDF to read. Unfortunately, reading a PDF is not quite as enjoyable for me as reading a mobi on my Kindle, and because of that I'm giving this read 4 stars. The storyline, the pace, the suspense and the characters kept my interest and I like the writing style of this author. The whole dark web environment was quite informative and interesting and I'll definitely be reading more from this author. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC for NetGalley.

Gage Callaghan drew the difficult task of safely delivering Drake’s programmer, black hat hacker, Dani Pierce. Gage has no patience that Dani works ‘outside the lines’ plus he’s chased her across Europe, so does some serious competition. Dani’s also flustered, on her way home she saw a woman who looked like her murdered and her apartments been broken into.

A bad storm’s rolling in, bad guys follow Dani & Gage as they snipe and the only way out of Juneau is a cruise ship in port. That’s not a good choice for Dani and making matters worse, thugs Gage saw in Europe and Dani saw murder a woman in town are the same ones and on the ship! Leaving Gage more convinced there’s a mole in Drake’s shop.

This is the first time in reading this author with the story tidbit that intrigued me. Of course it had a security company and they always seem to make for a far from normal reading. Gage is after one he was supposed to protect but soon discovers misinfo has it being something else. What seems to be after Dani is life or death and with Gage's help might just see the life part of it. Other things develop that adds spice to the story with it being one reason to jump into this one. The banter that opens is also delight added but it does have its mix of danger. Glad to have given it a try with it certainly keeping your interest while you are reading it.

A smart, sassy, beautiful hacker or a vulnerable woman?

Gage's problem is that Dani is both in equal measure and both call to him, the vulnerable woman triggers his protector and the smart and sassy just turns him on. He is known for his control but all it take is one feisty woman with big eyes and his control is not just shattered but blown to smithereens!
They are in a race against time for Dani to finish program, Gage to keep her alive and safe and for Callahan Security to find the mole...no pressure then!
I have read the three books in the series so far on Kindle Unlimited, book four is due out April 20th.

I received an ARC for a review. I absolutely hated this book. I was hopeful for a good romantic suspense instead what I got was a headache and sometimes confusion. Word did not have all their letters so I was stuck trying to figure out what they was supposed to be. Sentences were just dropped without finishing. The word Fine was over used by the end of the book I hated that word. I never felt any love between the MC’s. And the female main character is supposed to be this smart hacker but she came off to be very stupid.

Maybe my opinion is tainted because of my first experience reading a badly formatted copy but even after reading the edited version, I found the story to be only ok. I just didn’t feel the connection to the main characters. It used the enemies to lovers trope but I didn’t get any romantic connection. Pity, yes. Love, no. I also felt both made some obviously (to me) poor decisions which meant I didn’t empathize with the characters. Although this is part of a series, this can be read as a stand alone.

I received an advance copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.

Good read

This was my favorite one in the series. The mystery or suspense that goes through all 3 books is really good. I struggle with the over writing about the attraction between the characters. I get it, they’re attracted to each other, but it gets repetitive and it happens in all 3 books. This writer could be as good as Sandra Brown or Nora Robert’s and so many others if she didn’t over write the attractions and focused on the suspense and mystery. She’s so good with that story.

Hide and Seek

There is lots of hiding on the cruise ship. Then there are the attempts at hit and run, and the multiple chases. The hacking is quite a lot. The romance is kinda on and off... I kinda felt this story was good but it wasn't quite as good as the previous books in the series. It has all the gripping action and adventure with a really sad ending that I guess sorts itself out sorta... Although it is a bit like it skips after they admit to each other they love the other, to the next part in the Drake search and protect series.

I thought the book started off excited right away. I enjoyed the suspense/thriller side of this romance. I enjoyed reading about how they would butt heads and still feel attraction. We see Dani, our hacker, hiding as she develops the program. I will say there was plenty of action in the book and suspense as they race to find out what is really going on. I did wish there was more going on between Dani and Gage though. I just didn't quite connect with them together. Gage is sent in to retrieve her but is struggling with past mistrust with hackers.

Wow. What a rollercoaster of a ride. That was thrilling to read. Full of drama and suspense throughout the whole book. The book starts off high impact and doesn’t let up from there, with excitement and intrigue all the way. I loved the storyline and the characters. Please do yourself a favor and grab this wonderful book, but be prepared to shed a few tears in one certain section. Happy reading everyone!
