Åremorden #5
Armahtaja
Kulkeeko Åren tunturissa kuolemanenkeli?
”Inhottavan uskottava... Vertahyytävä kertomus, jossa kotihoitajia epäillään murhasta.” - Dagens Nyheter
Työparin on työnnettävä oma konfliktinsa sivuun, jos he aikovat saada kiinni uhrikseen puolustuskyvyttömiä vanhuksia valikoivan tappajan.
Viveca Sten (s. 1959) tunnetaan kansainvälisesti huippusuositusta Sandhamnin murhat -sarjasta sekä uudemmasta, idyllisiin tunturimaisemiin sijoittuvasta Åren murhat -sarjasta. Armahtaja on sarjan viides, itsenäinen osa. Åren murhien pohjalta on tehty myös samanniminen tv-sarja, jonka maailmanlaajuinen ensi-ilta on helmikuussa 2025 Netflixissä.

Helt ok bok.

Aber, hey, so what?

Review of advance copy received from NetGalley
Okay, first of all, this is my FIRST NetGalley read. Thank you NetGalley for this hell of a read. Thank you also to the publisher for this ARC and THANK YOU VIVECA STEN (This is the first book of yours that I've ever read and you got me. You really got me with this one. I'm adding your books to my tbr.)
At the beginning it was sooo confusing, could've been because it's the 5th book of this series (haven't read the first 4 so I'm not sure if they are connected at all or not) or maybe it was really written like that, to be confusing in the beginning so you thirst for more details and clarity as you continue to read this, because danggg it does made me want to know mooore as the first chapters confused and intrigued the hell out of me.
Oh, in the early chapters, I hate Daniel sooo much, I have sooo many annotated/highlighted notes on my kindle, privately roasting him and his idiot POVs, likeee some personal vendetta lol he's a good police officer, yes, but danggg what an idiot when it comes to expressing his thoughts and emotions, I WAS SOOO ANNOYED (i have a one-way beef with him from likeee chapter 1 to maybe chapter 80) 😭🤣
I love how even if there were many characters being shown, it doesn't feel too much to take, it is confusing at times but you'll gradually understand it or it just all makes perfect sense as you continue reading. Each character's story has been given their own time, was put on spotlight and switched smoothly to another (every now and then, no matter how small or big the character might look, their stories were all properly told/shown) Also, it doesn't feel too much or complicated to follow. Everyone has their own little story but feels connected or a part of a bigger picture somehow. Oh, and I love the emotion each of their stories trigger in me, a rollercoaster of emotions indeed. For example, there's an extreme annoyance for Daniel HAHAHAHAHAHA (sorry I really have a one-way beef with him) if there's someone who's annoyed with his cowardness to face his emotions, a*shole-ness (if there's such a word lol) towards Hanna at the beginning and indecisiveness had affected Hanna (AND Clara too, coz tf he lead her on, likeee I know this ain't a love story but still, men, stop doing that to women who's clearly interested and exerting effort to make things work between you two... 😭) yep, that's definitely me lol.
I love how the author manages to squeeze in each of the characters' individual stories and whatnots, without overshadowing or confusing the actual crime/murder plot. The characters were written good enough for you to have second thoughts, like one might have motive at one point then another character might have a possibility too. You'll think you already know the answer or is already solving the mystery then you'll have second thoughts again. This book will keep making your brain think, feel something, stare at the wall, question things, theorize and have second thoughts, up until the last chapters. You'll keep on guessing but the real one must be or must've not been the one you expected. The author was sooo good in throwing us information that seems like it's adding to proofs of someone's guilt but then it's not, it's just a distraction to divert our attention away from the real culprit. I have 3 guesses, and idk about yall but none of my 3 guesses got who the REAL culprit is (this is why I can never be a police officer lol) Kidding aside, I'm glad this book ends with a bit of a closure for every character's story. They all got something to continue to live for. It wasn't grand or big ending for everyone, but it's genuine and realistic, good, I love that. Except of course, that kinda cliffhanging thing between Hanna and Daniel. Viveca, I need to know what will happen now to them. I. AM. GOING. TO. WAIT. FOR. THE. NEXT. BOOK. (and read the first 4 too 😘)
Lastly, this book was actually scary and sad, likeee no matter how 'right' you think your beliefs, views and opinions about life are, YOU ARE NOT GOD, YOU CAN'T PLAY GOD. Oh, and how sad it is to grow old, watch yourself start failing to do things you love to do (even the simplest basic things) and be alone. That some people might think, putting you to sleep means saving you or is giving you the last bit of mercy. Scary and sad, really.
PS—Wow, Viveca Sten, you got me with this one. YOU REALLY GOT ME. I am definitely adding your other books to my TBR. I love me some good ol' murder/crime genre reads, it really scratches a different itch in me. Whoaaa, a hell of a rollercoaster read this is, indeed.

Review of advance copy received from Publisher

“Hidden in Mercy” by Viveca Sten is just as interesting as it promises to be. I admit I am biased, because I have been reading a lot of Nordic crime fiction of late, and have a soft spot for the genre, but I think this might be enjoyed even by those who are new to this type of books. Of course, it helps if they read the first four instalments of the series, as the characters change and evolve with every book.
The novel chooses a relevant topic, exploring the difficulties of senior citizens who use home care services, and the loneliness, isolation and sense of uprootedness of old age is described here vividly and poignantly. The situation is presented with grace, without being exploitative, which is something I appreciate very much.
Of course, there is a murderer, this being a crime novel, after all, and their motive is revealed through journal entries. The voice of this character was one of the things that kept me reading even when the book became a bit too slow-paced and focused on the characters’ personal lives. The journal entries are chilling because the perpetrator tries to justify their actions in a very rational manner, almost as if they were trying to make the reader agree with them. Still, the sense of entitlement of the author of the diary is also there, which makes the entries all the more disturbing.
Unfortunately, the book got a bit overburdened at times with unnecessary conflicts. The Daniel and Hanna situation was starting to become dull and tripe. It stretched out far too much, taking away valuable time from the mystery and from the stories of the Star employees. I also did not like how quickly it was resolved, how lenient Hanna was with Daniel, and how things went back to normal with only a minimal amount of discussion and almost no fallout for Daniel.
I will go even further and say the romantic tension between Hanna and Daniel wasn’t necessary and might ruin the story. If it persists, and the ending of the novel shows that it will, with even more complications, then it might have a negative effect on the series itself. I do not know. Some might disagree with me, but I just think this subplot wasn’t needed.
The other personal conflicts are great, though, and they enhance the story. I particularly liked Anton’s storyline, as it was realistic and handled with care. The perspectives of the Star Agency clients were also great to read, bringing readers closer to the potential victims and making us understand them.
A good crime novel needs to have twists and turns, red herrings and surprise endings. “Hidden in Mercy” has all of those. I thought I could guess who the murderer was, and I thought I could identify which of the characters were only the red herrings, but the resolution took me by surprise.
All in all, “Hidden in Mercy” was a great read, and I am glad I stuck with it even when some of the subplots were starting to annoy me. Those who enjoy Nordic crime fiction will have an enjoyable time exploring this story. Those who might be new to this world could try it, too. They will get an entertaining mystery and they might end up wanting to explore more of this series.
I’m certainly looking forward to the next installment.

In Åre, dying old is usually routine. People pass away in their sleep, quiet, predictable, clean. Viveca Sten takes that basic assumption and pulls hard on the thread until the whole mountain town starts looking ugly. Hidden in Mercy opens on an elderly home care patient dead in his bed, dismissed as natural causes until Hanna Ahlander starts looking at the small details. What she finds isn't a tragic decline, but someone systematically taking lives under the radar of an overworked, distracted system.
The book works best in its quiet, observational corners. Sten gets the grim realities of aging right: the loss of dignity, the physical betrayals, the way society quietly shifts old people into the background before they even die. Against this backdrop, the dynamic between Hanna and Daniel Lindskog carries real weight. They aren't sleeping together, nor are they throwing dramatic fits. Instead, there is a cold, unspoken tension, a wall that suddenly goes up between two people used to reading each other without words. They both let work ethic swallow their personal feelings, which makes their friction far more realistic than standard romantic subplots.
Sten's pacing stays steady, almost clinical, but the plot leans too heavily on familiar procedural beats when it should dig deeper into the perpetrator's head. One deliberate stylistic choice: short, stripped-back, single-sentence paragraphs during the crime scene checks-creates a stark, sharp rhythm that mirrors Hanna's isolation, cutting straight through the Nordic cold without wasting a word.
Read this if you want a grounded, cold-climate procedural that respects the messy reality of human aging and professional boundaries. Skip it if you are looking for an explosive, high-octane thriller where every chapter ends on a wild cliffhanger.

Review of advance copy

Review of advance copy received from Goodreads Giveaways

After a 90 year old man dies in a retirement home, it is generally assumed that his death is due to natural causes, even though his daughter insists otherwise.
But when another inmate dies under circumstances that seem questionable,
investigator Hanna Ahlander's initial suspicions are crystallized - even if her colleague Daniel Lindskog is disinclined to take her seriously.
But it is becoming increasingly clear that something very strange is going on in this snowy corner of Sweden. Could it truly be that a serial is targeting elders in the town of Are?
Viveca Sten is a gifted writer, and delivers a compelling and atmospheric thriller. This is well worth checking out.

Anna Janssonin Åren maisemiin sijoittuva dekkarisarja on edennyt jo viidenteen osaansa.
