Can you really say that your worth equates to your life's achievements? Can self-worth really be gained through success based on our hard work? The bible tells us that human worth is divinely given and cannot be earned by material success.

Lisa Aré Wulf's teaching in her book "Believe You Matter: Thriving as God’s Beloved Child" focuses on emotional awareness and discernment, which involves distinguishing past trauma from present choices. This Christian devotional guides us on a journey of self-worth and discovery through the lens of faith. She blends short stories from her childhood, everyday observances and even popular culture into meditations that preach graces. Each of these stories guides us to see ourselves the way God see us, as well as encourages us to let go of past traumas, pain and imperfections.

One of the main things I appreciate about this book is how simple and easy to understand the stories are. But more than that, I liked how emotional and empathic the book was; it felt like I was receiving advice from an older sister, rather than just a book. I also appreciate that this book is well-grounded in biblical passages, as it gives it an extra layer of authenticity. The prayers at the end of each chapter were beautiful and made the book feel even warmer.

To me, this book doesn't really have downsides, and I believe that it delivers on its promise. There is so much to learn and take from it, and in my perspective, it changes you from the inside out. I would rate it a clean 5 out of 5 stars, and I recommend it to people on a journey of self-discovery. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Believe You Matter: Thriving as God’s Beloved Child is a collection of 30 comforting and inspiring reflections that invite us “to see [ourself] through God’s loving eyes.” It is the latest volume in Lisa Aré Wulf’s, ‘You’re Worth It’ Devotional Series. Similar to previous books, each reflection is thematic and includes an prompting extract from Holy Scripture, perhaps a quote or two, a brief personal story or selected pertinent anecdote, related and supporting passages of Scripture, a word of encouragement framed as Believe You Matter, questions inviting you to Ponder and Pray, a bit of space to write your thoughts, plus a prayer suggestion to conclude the chapter.

Ms Wulf’s book is suitable for personal use or small groups. The questions in the Ponder and Pray segment provides anchorage for heartfelt and lively discussion.

I guess I keep looking for just a bit more content, or density rather, in Lisa’s books, but I gotta admit I’ve seldom seen such terse but inviting, welcoming reflections of a spiritual nature. Several segments stuck me as especially timely and particularly interesting. The main takeaway as I see it is that we’re strongly encouraged to lighten up on ourselves as we can and focus on Jesus. And that works for me just fine.

I read the e-version, which I found to be well organized, clearly written, thoughtful, cogent, and encouraging.

Five Stars then for Believe You Matter: Thriving as God’s Beloved Child

I won a complimentary e-copy in the LibraryThing contest.

This is a brief, compact devotional that covers about 30 topics or days, including a reflection number, title, scriptural readings, stories or testimonies, and a "Believe You Matter" section, which may also feature a Bible passage.

I recommend this for adolescents, teens, and small groups in college or for students to reflect and pray after sharing reflections. This devotional aims to help groups move from focusing on problems to embracing promises, from fantasy to reality, and ultimately back to Jesus (Yeshua).

I desperately wanted to find one that was relatable or helpful to my situation(s), and "Hope" reflection speaks to the despair that can be a constant companion. Many of us, including me, do not want to suffer, experience devastating events back-to-back as if they are pouring into our daily lives and nearly drowning in them (numerous incidents and wonder when it will end--anxiety, despair, and drowning in it can lead to depression, even suicide) -- where is the hope?

Despite the inspiration, hopefulness, and warm-fuzzy feeling when reading this, with scripture readings to follow each reflection, I would have liked more in the reflections, and/or a stronger sense of the belief that you matter. Yet I did consider that most readers' attention spans, like the Gen Y, millennials, or Z, would prefer less, maybe an audio version or reel. I am from Gen X, where we'd like more than surface-level and dig deeper to gather a sense of true devotion, even transformation.

The other thing is that Gen Y or millennials might not know former President Regan, or even the cartoon character Popeye, which made me chuckle since I was under 10 when these characters popped up on my TV screen. However, the author did give a short preview of them in the reflection.

There's a reflection where Lisa Wulf shares her labor pain experience, at a time when women didn't use pain meds or epidurals, it seemed like, to prove they are brave women? Today, women welcome the pain meds or epidurals! These are unreasonable expectations.

In Teresa's reflection, it briefly speaks of being terrified, feeling trapped with no resolution, and then trusting Yahweh for the courage to endure and believing in Him forevermore.

"New insight offers a fresh perspective (Wulf, 2025, 67.15% e-pub version)."

If you are looking for a heartening, uplifting devotional, Believe You Matter is for you. Each day's entry assures us of God's promises supported with scripture and encourages self-reflection. The author shares her own struggles with self-worth and how she has found it consistently through Jesus. I did wish some of the topics went a bit deeper, however, I believe the purpose of the devotional is to have us re-evaluate our worth in God's eyes and this has been achieved. My rating was a 4.5 rounded up to 5.

Believe You Matter is an uplifting read, perfect for anyone wanting to spend a few minutes each day focusing on their identity as a child of God. The easy-to-read devotions, combined with the thought questions at the end, allow for the reader to spend as much time as she would like reflecting on the day’s message. I found each devotion relatable and positive. Exactly what a good devotion should be! I recommend this book:)
