Silent Scars: Book 1 of the Written in Scars Trilogy

Rate this book
Some scars never fade.

Some love is carved into us.

I’m a monster.

Broken. Alone. Useless.

Taking care of my patients is the only thing I have left.

Until her.

My favorite patient is the reason I am still alive, the only soul who makes me believe survival is possible. I promised we’d make it through together.

But I failed her.

And now I’ve caught his attention.

Elio Carisi is the infamous crime lord who rules Seattle with a heart as cold as his blue eyes and a sadistic smile that heats my blood. I deserve his hate. I crave his cruelty.

In the moments when it is only me and him—and the pain he carves into my body—I see the man who has never been allowed to feel.

He hates me as much as he wants me.

There is honor in the shadows, and his are the darkest of all.

Although my secrets threaten to consume me, and my scars are the loudest of all, I can’t stop needing him. Even when his hunger for vengeance will leave me at the mercy of a monster far worse than him.

Silent Scars is a dark mafia romance about obsession, survival, and love carved from the deepest wounds. Perfect for fans of broken heroines and possessive antiheroes.

This is a dark mafia romance with mature themes and potentially triggering content. Please read responsibly.

OMG what did I just read!? This book was beyond amazing. I love my books dark and this did not disappoint. This takes you on one hell of a ride of emotions. I can’t even begin to explain how deep and dark this is. There’s pain, and trauma, both physically and mentally.
This grabs you from the darkest corner of your mind and holds on to you until it’s finished. My emotions were all over the place with this, but omg it was so good. I can’t wait to read what comes next

I don’t know where to start. This book is amazing!
I couldnt put it down!
It’s an emotional rollercoaster! I felt rage, fear, sadness, at times love. A DIFFERENT kind of love. It makes you question “what is love?”
The writing is so strong it pulls you in!
The main characters are amazing but so are the side characters! I adore Ty & Benny!
Lisbeth is so strong, she has her own demons to fight. Her silence and resilience is inspiring. Shes surviving!
Elio~ boss man, doesnt show feelings. But sometimes the mask slips.

I cant wait for book two!!!
Ends on cliffhanger.

🖤Scars dont mean weakness.🖤

This story was dark, devastating, and deeply emotional, the kind of book that crawls under your skin and refuses to leave. Silent Scars is soaked in trauma, heartbreak, and everything in between, following two broken souls whose relationship is built on pain, survival, and shared scars. It’s messy, toxic, and raw but that’s what makes it so achingly real.

The emotional depth in this story is unmatched. Every page is heavy with suspense and vulnerability, pulling you deeper into their fractured world and leaving you desperate to see if love can truly bloom in the darkest places. And that cliffhanger ending? Absolutely brutal. I need book two yesterday

This book is everything. It had my anxiety skyrocketing from the start, and I loved every second of Lisbeth and Elio's story. Lisbeth’s strength is unmatched and I loved reading about her. She's the kind of FMC that I want to wrap up in a big hug, and I'm in awe of how strong and determined she is, regardless of what she's been through. She always picks herself up no matter what, and I commemorate her for that. Ty is such a sweetheart, and he HAS to be my favourite just because of the way his and Lisbeth’s relationship evolved. Elio was portrayed as a ruthless, stoic mob boss, but every time that mask slipped? I was internally panicking. Overall, Lisbeth and Elio's story was dark, heartbreaking, and filled with trauma. I loved reading every second of Silent Scars, and that ENDING?! THE CLIFFHANGER?! 😨😨

Ignore me while I sit and stare at a wall until book 2 comes out. Thank you so much to Cornelia Nicole Mansfield for reaching out and sending me the ARC!

Silent Scars isn’t a book you just read — it’s something you feel. Every chapter pulls you deeper into Lisbeth and Elio’s shattered world. Their story is dark, raw, and filled with every kind of ache possible. Both of them are broken in ways that make your heart twist, yet somehow they find pieces of peace in each other.
Elio is the kind of hero who bleeds quietly — protective, dangerous, but lost inside. Lisbeth’s strength is quieter, built from pain and survival. Watching them fall apart and still choose each other again and again made my heart melt. Their love isn’t gentle, but it’s real, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.
The writing is stunning every line hits like a whisper and a wound at once. I loved how the author didn’t rush their healing. Everything felt earned. Elio letting Lisbeth go wasn’t the end it was love in its purest, most selfless form. Sometimes love means walking away so the other person can breathe.
This book left me speechless, emotional, and so attached to these two broken souls. It’s heavy, yes, but there’s hope tucked between the heartbreak.
The pain is so real & I’m honestly not okay right now… this book ended on such a wild cliffhanger, I seriously need the second book right nowww. Like how am I supposed to move on after that ending?? 😭💔
Thank you so much author for the free ARC! 💌

Anguish — that’s what I’m left with after finishing Silent Scars.

I wanted to yell, throw my book, and curse the author for leaving me in this state of disarray. This story grabbed me by the throat, and like Lisbeth, it left me bruised and utterly torn apart. I’m desperate for more—for a next chapter, a next word, something to mend the ache this book carved into me.

That’s how I know I’ve read something truly amazing. I wanted to hate Elio. I wanted Lisbeth to stay strong and not give in. But page after page, I kept turning, questioning everything I thought I knew. Which way is up? I’m still not sure after devouring their story.

I wanted to hate Elio. I wanted Lisbeth to be stronger, to resist him. But page after page, I found myself spiraling deeper. Darkness, sorrow, loss, determination, and love—all tangled together until I couldn’t tell which way was up. When a book worms its way into your soul and refuses to leave, that’s the mark of a truly talented author.

This is a must-read. But fair warning: check the trigger list first, because it’s dark — beautifully dark. If you let yourself get dragged under like I did, those 325 pages will vanish before you even realize it.

And the spice… oh, the spice. I teetered between ratings, but it deserves a solid four lip bites for one particular scene. It boiled my blood — in the best way possible.

Oh. My. Goodness.
What did I just read?

This book grabbed me from page one and refused to let go—I devoured it in a single day. It’s addictive in the best (and darkest) way. I went in blind, and honestly, if I’d read the trigger warnings beforehand, I probably would’ve skipped it… and that would have been an absolute tragedy. What an ARC.

Lisbeth is a character who burrowed her way under my skin. She’s haunted by everything life has thrown at her—broken, vulnerable, convinced she’s undeserving of happiness. Yet beneath all that pain is a core of resilience she doesn’t even recognize. She’s a survivor, even when she doesn’t want to be.

Elio, on the other hand… wow. Your quintessential cold, stoic, borderline feral mafia boss. He’s unhinged for most of the book—angry, ruthless, and almost entirely devoid of redeeming qualities. Almost. Because as the story unfolds, we start to see these raw, conflicted glimpses of what Lisbeth means to him, and those moments become his only saving grace.

My heart was in my throat for most of the story. The tension had my anxiety through the roof, and still I couldn’t look away. The writing is powerful, the characters feel painfully real, and the basement scenes—brutal as they are—kept me glued to the pages.

Benny and Ty were unexpected standouts. I absolutely loved what they added to the story.

And that cliffhanger… I am desperate for Book 2.

Thank you so much for the ARC. I’m still reeling.

✨ARC Review✨

100% check your triggers on this one!

“Whatever she stitches, ties, puts back together for me always comes back perfect.”

This book just consumed me.

You get:

🔪 Mafia Boss
☠️ Unhinged MMC
🔪 He holds her captive
☠️ Grief/Loss
🔪 Found family
☠️ A strong FMC

This book starts with Lisbeth working as a psychiatric nurse in a hospital. When her favorite patient, Vivienne, dies, they contact her brother. Little does Lisbeth know, Vivienne’s brother Elio is the mafia boss in Seattle. He chooses to blame her for his sister’s death and kidnaps her and holds her in captivity.

This book is not just a romance. This book is about survival and finding people to help you pull yourself out of the darkness. I loved Lisbeth so much, especially when I learned more about her past. She had already been through so much that she basically just gave in to the torture for the first part of this book thinking she deserved it. Elio was completely unhinged and just looking for anyone to blame for his loss. He had so many emotional walls around him that you would need a wrecking ball to break through them. Once he started opening up though to Lisbeth and learning about her, his whole world was flipped upside down.

Elio’s right hand man Benny and Benny’s little brother Ty were so great. Ty becoming like a little brother to Lisbeth had me in tears throughout this book. He was the first one to show her compassion and that never wavered.

I think the ending was expected since it was warned at the beginning there was a cliffhanger and the author did such a great job setting that up. Not going to lie though, I need more, like now lol

This book is a 5 star read from me. Just know if you go into it, expect some DARK elements throughout the whole book, especially the first 50%.

I first read Silent Scars during its third draft after responding to a post looking for beta readers. I went in with no expectations beyond hoping it wouldn’t be a slog.

Instead, I found a fearless story that doesn’t shy away from hard details, written by an author who clearly poured enormous care and effort into bringing it into the world. Even in a stage where I was asked to ignore typos, the writing was magnetic. Mansfield tells a story that cuts straight to the heart and refuses to soften itself just because the truth is difficult.

Lisbeth and Elio are two shattered people whose broken pieces fit together into something almost whole. They may be fictional, but they have a real place in my heart. Their story deserves your attention.

Full disclosure: having read early drafts and growing to consider the author a friend, I’m no longer an unbiased reader. However, I wouldn’t have become so invested if the story didn’t earn it.

This story pulled me into a dark, emotional world I didn’t expect to feel so deeply. The heroine’s pain, guilt, and determination to keep going felt incredibly real, and watching her struggle with her past made every moment meaningful. Elio is intense, dangerous, and complicated the kind of character who makes you uneasy yet curious about what lies beneath his cruelty. The tension between them kept me turning pages, especially as secrets and scars slowly surfaced. I also appreciated how the story explored trauma, survival, and redemption without losing the emotional connection between the characters. If you enjoy dark mafia romance with complex characters and heavy emotions, this one definitely leaves a lasting impression.

This story is not for the faint of heart.

It is dark, desperate and so delicious that you are not sure what is right and what is wrong anymore. Lis our FMC is a psychiatric nurse fighting with her own demons and trauma and our MMC mafia don Elio is possibly one of the most morally black characters I have read about and yet there is a seedling of hope throughout that maybe he can be saved.

Be warned the ending is a cliffhanger that will leave you screaming AND THEN WHAT?!

I need book two immediately and I also wouldn’t be mad about spin off stories for Ty and Benny if you’re taking requests Cornelia! 🤞🏻

the book had me wrapped up in it like it owned me! It's not your average, happy go lucky book - its dark so be prepared want check your trigger warnings. I think I actually almost didn't finish it but I was like there has to be a light at the end of the tunnel.... if you want to be emotionally entangled by a story you can probably relate to in one way or another then this book is for you. Its soooooooo good though. Cornelia did her thing with this story. You can see her heart and soul in the way this was written. A pure masterpiece then to end on a cliffhanger...I can't wait until the next book!

Dark...Devastating... with two beautifully broken main characters that dont know whether to love eachother or hate eachother. I was hooked from the first chapter and wanted to punch both characters in the throat, multiple times from beginning to end. Love them or hate them it was a great book, that will make you sit with every single one of your feels, wipe away a tear or ten, and throw the book a time or two... I would absolutely recommend it, BUT read the trigger warnings if you're easily triggered.

ARC✨ Lisbeth and Elio, two broken souls just trying to live in a world where hearts bleed, tears run down your face, found friends are everything and sitting in silence for a little while is okay.
This story was made for you as a reader to feel all the feels. It is not an easy story, it makes you get out of your comfort zone, think about the hard topics, think about the trauma you, as a reader may have gone through or know someone who has gone through.

It is honestly a story that will rip your heart out again and again and for the fun of it put it back in just to be ripped out again. This is not a traditional romance, but a dark and twisted romance. Take a chance, because their story isn’t finished and you’d hate yourself if you let it be.

✨before reading this book understand that this book deals with a lot of heavy elements that some may find too hard or triggering, your mental health matters, please take care of yourself ✨

unfortunately did not finish this. I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review. I've seen other reviews on this and people loved it i just felt that it fell a little stiff for me in terms of writing and I just wasn't able to get into it or connect with the main characters like I wanted to. I might try to pick it up at a later date after it's released and try again though!

Check your triggers! This one puts you through a lot. There's so much to unpack with this book. You've got life long trauma, abuse, death, a yearning to be seen for who you really are, and not the love you would expect but the love they need! She's a nurse, he's a crime lord who is holding her captive for what he feels is her role in his sister's death.

Omg I loved this so much! From beginning to end I couldn't put it down. Lisbeth feeling like she deserved her treatment for redemption was so heart breaking. This story chewed me up and spit me out and left me having to pick my jaw up off the floor at the end. I feel like even though Lisbeth and Elios situation is obviously not an every day thing, a lot of people can unfortunately resonate with the dynamic between them. I cannot wait for the next book because I have all of these theories and I need to see if I am right lol.

As always, make sure you check the trigger warnings. This book will make you question your definition(s) of love - in an intriguing (and kinda good?) way. It's intense, dark (seriously, check the TWs), full of anger, longing, and a different type of love.

This debut novel dives deep into the ways love can evolve, while tackling a lot of human issues of grief and loss. But reader beware, this is a dark and crazy story taking place in the world of Seattle's mafia. So expect raised eyebrows, spicy and dark scenes, but deep longing and shared trauma.

Please excuse me while I sit in my feelings for the rest of the week.

Speechless. Devastated.

This book, Silent Scars, shredded me from chapter 2 through the flipping end. I have never cried SO MUCH during a novel and omg did I from pretty much start to finish.😭o

Cornelia Nicole Mansfield holds nothing back in her debut dark romance novel.

This wasn’t your regular story. It was absolutely brutal and full of trauma. It was heartbreaking, devastating, and breathtaking all at the same time.

The character arcs were brilliantly done, and I just can’t even handle the way that Cornelia wove everything together.

I applaud your brilliance and your strength. You don’t write like that without your own scars and damn…

This is the kind of book you emerge from changed.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to need therapy and a countdown clock for Book 2.

… I also just found out this was a trilogy and want to cry after that cliffhanger. Please don’t make me wait too long! 😭

Silent Scars by Cornelia Nicole Mansfield – My Review

OMG, Cornelia, what have you done to me? A cliffhanger? Absolutely not how dare you leave me like this! This book dragged me straight through the emotional wringer, the kind where you’ve got butterflies in your stomach the entire time.

I read this as an ARC and absolutely loved it. Honestly, if I’d looked at the trigger warning beforehand, I probably wouldn’t have started it but I’m so glad I didn’t. The writing is powerful, and the characters practically step off the page. The secondary cast is strong, but the main characters? Lisbeth just shatters your heart, and Elio at first you’re convinced he has zero redeeming qualities. Then you get those glimpses into his POV and realise he’s just as broken, just in a different way.

The storyline is definitely harrowing, and there’s one scene I found genuinely repugnant—but I couldn’t stop reading. And that alone says everything about the strength of the writing and the pull of the story.

Five stars for Cornelia. This was my first book by her, but it absolutely won’t be my last. And please let’s not wait too long for part two!

📖 ARC Review – Silent Scars
✍️ Author: Cornelia Nicole Mansfield
🌍 Genre: Dark psychological mafia romance • Captivity • Trauma healing • Enemies-to-lovers • Redemption arc
💡 Tropes: captive x captor, morally broken MMC, damaged FMC, revenge x obsession, healing through pain

Silent Scars isn’t a love story.
It’s a slow unraveling of two broken souls who learn that love doesn’t save you — it burns you alive and makes you feel something again.

Lisbeth, a psychiatric nurse drowning in guilt after her son’s death, loses another patient — Vivienne. When she tries to find Vivienne’s family, she discovers that her brother is none other than Elio Carisi, Seattle’s most feared mafia don.

Elio blames Lisbeth for Vivienne’s death. He takes her, locks her away, and turns her suffering into his penance.
But as he forces her to confront her ghosts, his own begin to surface — and soon, revenge becomes something far more dangerous: recognition.

She becomes the mirror to his madness; he becomes the punishment she thinks she deserves.
Between pain and silence, they find a connection that feels like sin — raw, consuming, and tragically real.

Cornelia Nicole Mansfield writes darkness like poetry.
Every word is a blade. Every touch is confession.
And through it all, she reminds us:

love doesn’t heal the wounds. it simply gives the scars a voice.

🔹 What I loved:
• the psychological depth of Elio — a monster who learns how to feel again
• Lisbeth’s fragile strength and quiet defiance
• the captor–captive dynamic — toxic, magnetic, perfectly executed
• the symbolism of scars and Vivienne’s garden — pain turned into rebirth
• the lyrical writing — raw, cinematic, and painfully intimate

🔸 What bothered me slightly:
• the prolonged brutality of the first chapters (emotionally necessary, but hard to read)
• the ending — an agonizing cliffhanger that hurts more than it shocks
• minor repetition in the internal monologues of pain

💡 Recommended for readers who crave the real kind of dark romance — not where love fixes everything, but where two shattered souls choose to stay anyway.
Perfect for fans of Haunting Adeline, Twist Me, The Sweetest Oblivion, and The Maddest Obsession.

📌 Verdict:
A haunting, poetic, and devastating dark romance.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ /5 — for intensity, complexity, and emotional destruction that feels almost holy.

🖤 Silent Scars is not about being saved.
It’s about finding someone who bleeds the same way you do —and realizing that sometimes, surviving together is the closest thing to redemption.

A Powerful and Emotionally Raw Debut: Silent Scars by Cornelia Nicole Mansfield
I had the privilege of reviewing Silent Scars as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC). While it is not my normal genre, I took my responsibility to heart and dove into the world of Lisbeth and Elio. Lisbeth presents initially as a broken human, lacking self-confidence and possessing self-loathing. The author does an amazing job of bringing Lis’s pain to life with her written words and I found myself wanting to comfort both the character and the author based on the depth of emotions. So much raw and heartfelt feelings were exposed within the story. Elio to me was a more predictable character- one with many demons but underneath holding a capacity and desire to love. One of my main metrics for rating a book is whether it stays with me after I close the cover. Silent Scars absolutely did. I found myself thinking of Lisbeth several times a day as the story occupied my mind often. I rejoiced as she slowly began to realize that past hurts, mistakes, events don’t have to remain open wounds and while there may be scars, they fade over time and become symbols of survival. I am anxiously awaiting to continue the journey with Lisbeth and Elio in the upcoming books.
My only critique is that, for me, there were times when the abundance of adjectives and descriptions (such as the repetitive mention of "messy buns" or "caramel eyes") felt slightly prolific. However, since romance is not my usual genre, this style may be perfectly suited for its readership.
I wish Goodreads allowed a more detailed rating to reflect a solid 4.8/5 stars. I rarely give a five, but this debut effort deserves high praise. I highly recommend Silent Scars to any romance reader, especially those with a dark side, and would encourage other genre readers to consider this book for a dip into dark romance. I also appreciate the author's content warnings and recommend reviewing them before reading.
Well done, Cornelia Nicole. Welcome to the literary world and I can’t wait to read more.

Vicious Mafia Don and A Shattered Heroine💔

This book had me hooked from the very beginning. There’s a dark sense of unrelenting pain and self loathing within the first chapters that keeps you intrigued.
Lisbeth is a psychiatric nurse that has demons of her own silently trauma bonds with one of her patients Vivienne. When Vivienne’s untimely demise occurs the only family member who comes forth as her next of kin is a true living nightmare. Elio Carisi the mafia don of Seattle. Blaming Lisbeth for his sister’s passing, he sets a ruthless example by kidnapping, physically assaulting and controlling her. But his ultimate punishment for Lisbeth is trading her life to a sadistic mafia boss who is even more dangerous than him. On the surface Elio is unforgiving, vicious, cruel, callous and self serving with a wall built around himself that is untouchable until Lisbeth. Different traumas blended in pain between two wounded people thats intensity is almost scary to a fault. There’s a unique rawness about this story that doesn’t leave you. Chefs kiss on the plot and storyline. The writing style flowed well with the themes in this book. The side characters Benny and Ty hold the main characters together and are great additions to this story. This book is heavily triggering with sensitive topics so take heed before proceeding. The spicy scenes are both non/con 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ given the context. A climactic scene ends on a cliffhanger. This was so good! I couldn’t put this one down. I am anticipating book two to keep the momentum going. If you love a dark vicious mafia don that is obsessive/possessive and a shattered heroine then this is the dark romance read for you💔 Add it to the TBR list!

Silent Scars

What Silent Scars Delivers:

🖤 Psychiatric nurse FMC
🖤 Dark mafia romance
🖤 Stockholm Syndrome elements
🖤 Tragic, heavy pasts
🖤 Dark, twisted themes
👀 Tattooed mafia don MMC
👀 Beauty-and-the-Beast tension
👀 Torture, obsession, and emotional unraveling

My Thoughts

This is dark romance at its most potent. The story surges forward from the very first chapter and held tight to my attention through every shadowed turn. I was completely invested in the main characters, their trauma, their volatility, and the emotional threads stitched between them. Every complication added another layer that kept me turning the pages, hungry to see what came next.

Lisbeth and Elio are an unforgettable pair. Their dynamic is jagged, painful, magnetic, and crafted with the kind of complexity that makes the story feel alive. Their contrasts make their connection even sharper, and watching them collide again and again was absolutely gripping.

This was my first read by Cornelia Nicole Mansfield, and I’m genuinely impressed with how masterfully she handled the darkness, tension, and emotional depth. The side characters were just as compelling, adding richness to every scene.

And that cliffhanger? Wicked in all the right ways.

Overall, Silent Scars was an intense, addictive read, and I cannot wait to see where the story goes next.

Survive. That’s what you do while you’re reading this. You’re surviving along with the characters. You’re surviving your own silent scars, ones that may have been ripped open while reading this. This book broke me, shattered me. Silent Scars is a bit darker than what I typically read… but it was life changing 🙌🏼 The author’s writing is amazing. Everything flowed so well and it was perfectly paced. There was never a lull within the book that had me losing interest — I was so engaged the entire time and needing more at the end of each chapter. It was haunting, emotional, sexy and dark. Just when I started to feel a bit of hope… the cliffhanger ending had my heart shattering all over again!

The characters. They are complicated, imperfect, impulsive, toxic, devoted and loyal. The MMC is Seattle’s Mafia don — king of the city and most feared man in the Pacific Northwest. The FMC is a psychiatric nurse by day — a barely functioning alcoholic at night. Both haunted by ghosts of their pasts; hiding behind a façade. The side characters are an important part of the story. I love Benny and Ty and the story wouldn’t have been the same without them in it!

If you want a 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸, twisted, emotionally challenging, dark Mafia romance — this one is for you!! Be prepared to feel alllllll the feels 🥲

A Beauty & the Beast Retelling That Emotionally Shattered Me!

Besties… "Silent Scars" absolutely wrecked me. Like, I’m still sitting here blinking at the wall wondering what emotional crime Cornelia Nicole Mansfield just committed against me. Lisbeth’s torment? I felt every cut, every scream buried behind her eyes. And Elio? A tattooed, morally black mafia don delivering psychological whiplash like it’s a love language. The dark and twisted Beauty & the Beast vibes was flawlessly disturbing. He hates her, tortures her, breaks her... yet somehow, the broken pieces still reach for him.

The trauma, the power dynamics, the survival instinct... this isn't romance, it's a beautifully agonizing psychological dissection. My heart shattered with Lisbeth’s past😭. Oh, my heart. 🥀 And that cliffhanger? BESTIES... I knew it was coming, but I wasn’t prepared to be thrown off an emotional cliff like that. Book 2 is needed... now… but I genuinely don’t know if my heart can take it!

Dark. Destructive. Haunting. Debut novel? Unbelievable! OMG Besties, you have to read this.

My Ratings: ⭐ 5/5 ▪︎ 🥵 3/5
