А ми, українці, вже з самої колиски стаємо націоналістами, якщо матері нам співають українські колискові. Тому нас перевиховують у концтаборах. Українець перестає бути націоналістом аж тоді, коли зневажає свою мову, пісню, свої національні традиції, любить усе, крім свого рідного."
Written in 1991 and first published in 2000 in Chernivtsi, "Monologue in front of the face of my son" is regarded as the most complete work on the life of Volodymyr Ivasyuk. It's a shocking history of the life the most famous artist of the first post-WWII generation of Western Ukraine trying to search for his own identity and voice through music.
In 1979, Ukraine was shocked to see the death of Volodymyr Ivasyuk, a then 30-year-old composer originally from Kitsman in the Bukovyna. Those who know a little bit more than average about Ukraine will know the songs "Chervona ruta", "Vodohrai", "Pisnya bude pomizh nas" and "Ya pidu daleky hory" which he wrote between the ages of 19 to 25.
However after his death—which likely happened as a result of his popularity among the Ukrainian youth and impopularity among the local Soviet government—he was denounced by Soviet authorities as someone who was "mentally ill", "insane" and who "just hung himself".
In an attempt to change this perception, his father Mykhailo wrote "Monologue in front of the face of my son", a memoir chronicling his life from the day his son was born until the moment he realised that nobody would be prosecuted for murdering his child. It is a rare view into Volodymyr Ivasyuk's life.
"Нарешті, напарник слідчого сказав, що ми можемо зайти до сина. Ми довго оглядали мертвого Володю. Впадав у очі його деформований ніс, що був приплюснутий, як інколи буває у боксерів. Шия була чиста, на ній не було странгуляційної борозни."
An imaginative and touching narrative, showing a father-son relationship between two men that share a similar personality but have different interests and goals in life. Father Mykhailo is a folklorist and author, while his son Volodymyr is a musician—a profession Mykhailo does not fully understand but admires nonetheless. He does everything to support and protect his son from any evil.
Although advised by his teachers in Kitsman to let his son continue studying in Kyiv to become Ukraine's next big violinist, Mykhailo questions "at what price?" and obeys young Volodymyr to stay in the Bukovyna—destroying a potential career in music for the costs of his son's health. It's a golden decision as the simple life in and around the town inspires him to write his subsequent masterpieces and makes him able to "meet his crowd".
Describing the repression and discrimination of those who are not likened by Soviet authorities and are different by heart and not by choice, Mykhailo Ivasyuk gives an important and forgotten insight into Ukraine's "Golden Age" of pop music (often nicknamed Moustache Funk) through telling the story of his murdered son.
Nb: this novel is only available in Ukrainian (its original language) and Russian through the site of Ivasyuk Memorial Museum.

Журба батька по сину.
Монолог перед обличчям сина — це досить емоційна й сумна оповідь батька, що лише з роками зміг вилити свій біль. У творі Михайло Івасюк із батьківською любовʼю розповідає про народження та зростання єдиного сина, декламуючи його своєрідність із перших днів від народження. Паралельно із цим, можна помітити й ріст ненависті до радянської влади, що розвивається в авторові. Власне, якщо на початку твору, він позитивно відгукується про деяких функціонерів, то вже ближче до кінця він відверто поливає майже всю радянщину брудом, ностальгуючи за її попередниками.
Окрім цього, книга допомагає краще зрозуміти видатного композитора та пройти разом із ним творчий шлях. Постать Володимира Івасюка відверто викликає захоплення, а також жаль по втраті такого рівня особистості. Зокрема, дивує його ставлення до написання творів і захоплення метою популяризації українськості.
Володимир Івасюк — навіки у серці України, а його пісні — у душі її народу!
