After years of war, the necromancer Zaroth Karn finally lies dead at my feet, and I am one of the most powerful mages left standing.
Now it’s time for peace—and to keep a promise to a fallen friend. He left me his quiet farmstead in the elven town of Aerenvale. With most men lost to the war, the women there could use a hand… or more.
Time to hang up my artifact-level staff and battlemage armor, and to use my high-tier magic to create instead of destroy.
Here's hoping the undead will stop bothering me...
I enjoyed it for the most part. Much of the book is slice of life which sometimes can be a little slow. The action was written well. I liked the characters and two side characters starting to get personalities while one has stood out from the first meeting.
I really only have 2 issues that made it 3.5 stars. The first is the MC's choice to not destroy something because he wants to know more. The destruction would end much if not all of the threat to his community. It may also end any hope of the being able to do.what they want to do. These types of plot devices just remind me of the stupid and elaborate murder schemes of Dr Evil.
The second is the battle scene. The MC is described as being powerful enough to destroy a whole army by himself but when he faces an army he doesn't even try. Once the enemy breached the walls, they fall back to the unprotected city center. If they couldn't hold the enemy back with wall, there is no way they could without walls. Without dues ex or a plot device this would mean that the battle was lost and all should have died. Of course a plot device was used, but the MC could have done at the very beginning and ended the battle before it started.
In the end, these two issues are pet peeves of mine but I will.read.the next book.
This was a different kind of book for me, but very well written and entertaining. I read it because I saw on friend’s Read list and was curious, there are an amazing number of similar books, too. The world of mages and hot elven women was new to me, but the story was compelling and the characters were very relatable, especially frisky Lulu.
I usually love Jack's writing, but this one is a bit too technical for me.
I assume this is one of Jack's early works. It would be good to edit this with his new style of writing. The sentences. Are too. Technical. It makes it. Hard to read. But don't get me wrong, if this is edited I would reread it in a heartbeat
The characters and world are amazingly well built. Great writing and descriptions. Just enough action and magic to make the character interactions even better. Looking forward to the next book.
I was liking things, mostly. Then it decided to turn into a Scooby-Do whodunnit or something as our hero gets a quest to explore the strange happenings around town, and sure, lets turn it into a dungeon dive adventure because why not.
I can’t wait for book 2. This was a fantastic story. I had to sit down and get it all done in one read I couldn’t put the book down. Look what you’ve done to me. I blame you ha ha
I truly feel this is the author's best so far. Impressive characters and world building, a mystery layered into everyday life in a wonderful story. I can't wait to read what happens next.
Very basic, but fun story. It basically about a retired war wizard. Expet for he fact that you never really retire. Those that can, are always in need. However good news he's got a couple ladies to help him with the burden. Good fun I'll keep reading
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and engaging. The story and characters were incredibly interesting and entertaining. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is definitely worth checking out.
In my opinion jack Bryce is a hell of an Writer I can barely wait for the next 1 in this series Because I intend to read the whole series I don't give hints about what happens in the books Just know that this book is worth your time.
