Outward University is more than a sanctuary of magic; it is the last bastion of balance between light and shadow. Within its ancient walls, gifted students from across the world gather to master powers tied to their ancestral lines. Some wield flame, some command storms, and others bend the fabric of reality itself. But every gift comes with a sacrifices of flesh, mind, or spirit demanded by the laws of magic.
Among them are the twins, Lia and Lyra, each carrying secrets that could change the course of history. Their bond is tested when desire sparks a dangerous love triangle with Dorian, a prodigy whose charm hides darker truths. Meanwhile, Rhys, cursed with visions of the future that strip away his sanity, fights to hold on to what remains of himself, while Bell pays for strength with his sight, finding new power in the spirit world.
But shadows stir beyond the classroom walls. Torn between his unwanted magical gifts and his brother, who fights without them, Trevor grapples with love and resentment in equal measure. And in the depths of the forgotten, an ancient enemy rises, Kaelen Veyr, a necromancer who commands the dead and whose disciples whisper of a world remade in darkness.
As betrayals unravel, forbidden magic spreads, and loyalties fracture, the students of Outward will learn the most brutal truth of to gain power is to sacrifice. Some will lose love, some will lose their minds, and some will lose their lives.
And when the dust clears, the Covenant that holds the world together may break forever.
The Covenant Book One, Shattered Oaths is the explosive beginning of a fantasy saga filled with magic, romance, betrayal, and battles that will leave readers breathless.
Shattered Oaths is a whirlwind of an introduction to this series, the reader is literally thrown into the middle of it, with something greater and more complex, a sort of ongoing feud looming in the background. The world, the setting and the characters themselves unfold and we get to know them through action, fights, flashes of memories rather than descriptions, which I really enjoyed. I loved how complex the characters are, each in their own way, guarding their secrets, theis shadow side, and enjoyed the dynamic between them, their bond and the way they complement and help each other in fights. The book is almost a series of battles, sieges there is hardly a time for the characters (and the readers) to catch their breath, while they also have to fight their own demons. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
I remember reading Seven Twisted Shades by this author, and this was a bit of a longer read, but I enjoyed it. From the beginning, there was something about the writing style that had me on edge, feeling the need to know what happened next.
I liked the university setting because I really enjoy books with dark academia vibes. I think my favourite characters were the twins Lia and Lyra, as they had standout personalities, but each character had their own part in the story.
I believe this is the beginning of an epic fantasy series, and it's kicked off to a promising start.
