*****
Genre and Series The Emberquell Academy series is a set of three duets following the same couple, all romantasy book for adults / romantasy with spice. These romantic dragon books are brimming with forbidden love storylines.
Aimee Lynn was born in Oregon and grew up in New Zealand. She dreamed of being a novelist from the age of seven, but as a Gen-Xer, was informed it wasn’t a realistic career. Instead, she went to college to be a journalist and (very realistically) never completed her degree. It wasn’t until her mid-thirties, after a marriage, a corporate career, and a family, that she rediscovered the joy she’d found in writing fiction. Now, she thanks God for giving her a husband whose love inspires romance, and who isn’t threatened by Jason Momoa.
Breeeewn babygirl had me SICK. That torment? That trauma? The way she’s clawing her way out of literal emotional hell? I felt that in my chest. The knot in the throat. The “blink fast so the tears don’t fall” type pain. She’s not just surviving — she’s rising, and it’s powerful to witness.
And DONAVYN?!?!?!
Where. Do. We. Apply.
The way that man absorbs her pain without flinching. The way he moves with purpose. The quiet intensity. The vengeance simmering just beneath the surface for anyone who dared to hurt her? OBSESSED. He’s not just protective — he’s calculated. He’s patient. He’s “I’ll burn the world down but make it look like an accident” energy and I am here for every single second of it.
And the SPICE?!?!?!
Ma’am.
When I tell you the tension was tensioning and then it just IGNITED? The build-up, the heat, the way he touches her like she’s both fragile and his entire universe? Yeah… ovaries did not survive. Flames were not just fanned — they were set ablaze. 🥵
I am absolutely about to lose sleep over this next book and honestly? Worth it. Because if his vengeance unfolds the way we think it will? We’re not ready. We are NOT ready.
Locked in. Chokehold. Strangled. And voluntarily handing over the oxygen mask for more. 😌🔥
Now tell me — are we emotionally prepared for what’s coming next or are we about to spiral??? Are we ready for vengeance Donavyn + fully empowered Bren? Because that combination might actually be illegal 😮🔥
I liked this book… just not as much as the first! More spice but also more filler… I missed the action and growth that were getting in book 1 between bonded pairs! We FINALLY got Brens whole back story (TW above) which brought us two steps forward but then whiny royals brought us two steps back. I’m hoping we get more actual ~ plot & action ~ for book #3!
First book was good, second one I hate the trope. Dislike how the main character has now gone all oh woe is me and I’m such a weak little girl. Dislike the weird joint dragon and human love scene crossovers, gives me major ick
OK, so spice was in very much high demand with this book I think pretty much every chapter involved a bit of it which I don’t hate I loved some of the tender moments between the two main main characters
However, my only gripe with this book and a lot of books like them including fourth wing is that the minute the male becomes enthralled to the female character we lose so much of the characters. Before they become thrilled, they challenge the females they make them better. They don’t allow the use of a better word bullshit to slide. And it’s something I do miss I hate sometimes the way the male becomes a bit like an obedient dog. I want them to be equal but sometimes it feels like the female has all the power and I get it with this book because of what the female character went through. She needs to have the power but I also hate the fact that there’s blinding rage to anyone that disrespect the female like I want her to defend herself I just want him to be a bit more trusting of her power and not always take on this “protective” role.
Like I said this is a gripe that I do have with quite a few books and I hate the fact I do have to add that grip to this book and I also hate the fact that they found out about who the person was that disrespected the female so quickly, I would’ve loved to have been dragged out. I would’ve loved for them to have come back the male character unaware and the female character almost take charge of her own situation and the male character find out pretty much at the last minute when she had her revenge.
I also don’t like the fact that I feel like the male character is going against his bond with the dragon by keeping things from them
It’s really funny. I feel like I’ve complained a lot about this book despite giving it five stars. It’s just little grips I did love this book, hence why I finished it so quickly. I’m literally getting to the series so quickly. I am enjoying it but these little grips just get to me.

I like the story, but I still think that it is lacking. She's supposed to be learning how to be a furyknight, and even though I could foresee the lacking of structure on her training (which is weird, it is supposed to be some sort of military school, so is it not supposed to offer lots of structure, real classes, strict timetables, combat training, physical training?....) we never really get the full picture of what she's learning, she's supposedly working hard but we never actually see the work she's putting in. Also, I usually like the spice, but for this book, half of it is spice ! ok, I get the mating bond, but it almost nauseating talking about it over and over and over, and MMC becomes way too soft, and so sweet, I almost got . There should have been more balance between the story and the spice. Oh, and the MMC, seriously, for someone so duty-driven, he looses sight quite fast after the bonding. How come a fully grown man, well disciplined, well traine, bonded to the Primarch dragon, can get lost on his mate so fast that he looses all that in a heartbeat ? weird. Another thing I just can't shake of is the MFC, the author wrote her ina way that, well, I don't know, sh's supposed to be strong and get stronger over the books, but I just feel her weak, lacking of training, like they don't really prepare her for her role as a Furiknight. Why is she not trained in hand-to-hand combat? arrows? swords? daggers? ? why can't she learn how to fight instead of always leaning on her brothers/any male around? she doesn't want to be a liability, a weight to her brothers/squadmates, yet she doesn't put any effort on getting stronger and more independent when it comes to being able to fight and defend herself. So disappointing, I really was hoping for a stronger MFC, some real growth, more like Violet Sorrengail or even Mare Barrow (Aelin or Feyre would be way too much to ask, they were trained since childhood, let's be real) I am just finished, I read it in 3 days (I still have a 9-5 and 2 kids, please cut me some slack guys !), and I just think it could have been better, there are so pmany things missing here... up to book 3!
super unimpressed with the series. first book wasn't too bad for what it was seems like a new writer honestly. but it was an idea and the author gave her a shot and I definitely noticed the Christian undertones which I appreciated. this book I don't know how I finished it it made me Furious. I can accept that when they say God in the Creator it could be just any random single monotheistic religion in this world. but at the very end of the book when the author talks about thanking Jesus ultimate ick. personally I find it disgusting to write a book we're over half of said book is straight smut and then have the nerve to thank Jesus for your success with this book. utterly vulgar and disgusting. I put up with the poor grammar sentence formatting and giant plot holes because I believe that this was a Christian author. The only positive things I have to say about this book besides the dragons which really carried the book was the author's depiction of sexual abuse survivors the hopelessness and helplessness and inability to trust others that comes with it.

The first 200 pages was spice. I didn’t love it. It was sweet but not descriptive. Kind of beating around the bush (no pun intended).
I really appreciated the authors trigger warning note the beginning of the book. It felt very sincere and I hate that those parts were based off of friends experiences.
Check triggers
The plot hardly progressed at all in this book. Barely anything happened. It was very repetitive. But will I read the next book? Probably because I I don’t want to have to think.
Major TWs: graphic on page 🍇 of MC (not between MCs), miscarriage, abuse, self unalive attempt

I can not stand when they hide their bond/love what have you. It really erks me. So I'm glad that it didn't last long and he was against it from the start.
This one focused on their budding relationship and Brens healing journey. I very much enjoyed it. While there was very little plot growth or character development beyond her healing in book 2, I assume book 3 will be all about it.
Brens experience was traumatic and explained a lot about her character. I'm so glad she was able to open up and let Donavyn help her heal. Donavyn was again the epitome of a perfect gentleman who loved and honored whole heartedly and didn't balk at her scars and bruises.
I can't wait for book 3 so I can hopefully see Rune get what he has coming to him!!
It’s VERY similar to Fourth Wing.. but also, completely different. The way the academy & Wings are set up are the main similarities. They are not a copy & paste though, they have their own unique differences. The spice isn’t just spice for spices-sake. It’s done in almost an overly-respectful, way to show their growing bond & love. With all the ties to The Creator/God in the storyline, it makes sense though. It’s not a 5 star God Tier read by any means, but it IS a fun read! Have high hopes for Bren’s progression in her story, and interested to see where Donavyn goes in his. The Queen reminds me of a jealous jr. high girl. Can’t wait to see what twists and turns come from her nonsense. Have a feeling she’s at the center of everything.
Well, lots of steamy scenes. Lots of calling to a God and religion that is still not fully explained and “trust in his path” that I cannot quite get behind.
Dragons getting hot and heavy, humans getting hot and heavy.
Oh, and some plot development that really happens towards the end when we learn the full scale of Bren’s trauma.
Till then she is facing the challenges of becoming a fully fledged Furyknight. Her relationship with her brothers is improving and more of the scheming King and Queen is shown.
I do admit I liked the ending and looking forward to the next book, which promises to be darker with Donavyn struggling to contain his thirst for vengeance.
I thought book 1 had me liking it, but book 2 HAD ME LOCKED TF IN BABY. omg when they finally realized they were mates = kicking my feet. The way Donavyn is OBSESSED with her = screaming in joy. On a seperage note: The TRAUMA that Bren went through explains EVERYTHING. She is one of the most inspiring FMC I have read. At times in the first book I wondered why her growth was so slow, but it’s because the real truth needed to be reveled in this book. When their bond broken it scared tf out of me, but I love how they both bonded again and broke the barrier of her trauma and fear together. Honestly top tier Romantasy and Donavyn is top 5 book boyfriend material❤️❤️

I'm afraid I couldn't finish this. The first bit was exciting as Bren is sent on her third mission but has been sent on the wrong one and Donavyn and his dragon go to rescue her. The spice scenes are very long-winded which I had to skip over. Bren doesn't grow as a person and her continued crying got on my nerves. I know she has been traumatised in the past but this was too long dragged out. The story was so slow that I was skimming over large parts of it. Can't get into it at all so will not be continuing with the series.
Started this book and finished it so fast that I didn't even think to add it to my "currently reading". Another amazing part to Bren and Donavyn's story. I was hooked with book one. And was hooked with book to by the Author's Note. This book dealt with some very series and deeply triggering themes and the author handled it tastefully and very well. I will say that the spice kicked up significantly, which isn't bad, I just personally don't prefer so much in a book but it was plot relevant (to a point) and was easily skimmable / skippable for me.
Not sure if I’ll continue on to Shadowborne. While I did like this book better than the first, I’m not in love with either of the main characters and the last 5% or so of the book irked me big time. Why would Donavyn question if the group of men he’s concerned about is able to hide thoughts, actions, deceit, etc. from their bonded dragons, when he started doing EXACTLY THAT at the very end of the book? Like, clearly, it’s possible. Now, go finish plotting murder and hiding it from your dragon even both supposedly go against everything you’ve stood for for two whole books.

Loved the 1st book, the 2nd has been a battle to get through. So much spice…too much spice, not enough story. I need a good balance of spice and story. While I also appreciate the trigger warnings…the FMC’s dealing with her trauma and then immediately into spice gave me the ick…frustrated me. It’s such a private and personal thing…it made the spice seem inappropriate. My opinion…I don’t know if I will finish this series…
Part two is just as emotional if not moreso than book 1 due to the true depth of trama that is revealed. Take the trigger warnings page very seriously on this one. The only reason that this a 4 and not 5 star for me is that at times it felt like sex for the sake of smut. I get that it was making a point for intensity, but it was bordering on becoming a slog to read through. Otherwise an incredible read.
I really enjoyed book 1. Book 2 however was just straight smut for the entirety of the book and I found myself completely skimming over it. Aside from learning about what happened to Bren prior to meeting Akhane, the plot went literally nowhere. Hoping book 3 focuses more on the plot and character development and less on the boring smut.
3.0/5⭐️ 2.5/5🌶️ I mostly liked it. It was okay. There was a lot more “spice” in this one but it was almost too much, very repetitive, the same thing over and over. There were a few “Oh!” surprises that I liked, but finally understood Bren’s trauma. I’m gonna read the sequel just to find out what happens.
I liked this book, as usual the second is not as good as the first one in any series, but it was nice to continue the story. The only bad part was the 30 pages pf spice...i like spice on a book, i dont mind, but it was too much because it sounded always the same...but apart from that it was a nice second book.
So much spice so little content. This book really focused on the characters relationship and it would have been so good if it included more about the world around them and why there was a war. What it meant for the country or continent they live in. Basically why we should care about some impending war.
I really enjoyed the first book… and I wanted to like the 2nd book even more. Most of this book was spice and understand why but would have liked to get the to point a little sooner. Towards the end I felt like it got really good.
I love the story - I gave only 4 stars as I wish there was More plot and less sex scenes which seemed to make up most of the short book. I can’t wait for book 3 and the story to continue.
