People pretend to be scared of things that go bump in the night, but they’re lying to themselves. Fear is thrilling. The racing heart, prickling sensation, and unsteady breaths are signs of excitement and fear. Coincidence? I certainly don’t think so.
Which is the first point I’ll make to her. After two years of being kept away, I’m back to collect what I’ve been without.
My past. My future. My Trickster.
The one who got me arrested. My stepsister.
This Halloween, when everyone is shouting "trick or treat" to their neighbours, I’ll be hiding in the dark, making her heart race in both terror and pleasure.
USA Today Bestselling author M.L. Philpitt writes both dark romance and paranormal romance. When she’s not writing made-up realities, she’s reading them. She lives in Canada with her four pets and survives life with coffee and an obsession with fictional characters, especially the morally grey kind. By day, she masks as a therapist, and is still waiting for her Hogwarts letter so she can be sorted into her Ravenclaw house.
I. ABSOLUTELY. LOVED. THIS. NOVELLA! The way that I ate this novella up and didn't leave a single fucking crumb. This one has all of my favorite tropes/microtropes. It has the spice without losing a plot. And listen, I love myself a slutty little novella that is all spice and no plot but the way that I absolutely loved this plot.
This halloween novella is a stepsibling romance where they play an adult version of trick or treat. And Knox is the master of not only tricking but also getting his treat, if you catch what I am putting down. So essentially the plot of this book is that Knox and Oakley are stepsiblings and have always played tricks on one another. Oakley took it too far 2 years ago which resulted in Knox getting arrested and sent away for community service. Knox is back but NOT for revenge. He is back because he has lost out of 2 years of playing tricks on his little sister and he wants his treat. I mean the first time she realizes he is back in her life is by waking up with dried cum on her back... glorious! Surprise, she loved it!
This one didn't read like a novella at all. I didn't feel like anything was lacking. I loved the depth of the plot and the spice was good. All of the kinks and "plays" was everything I would want in a halloween novella. So if you are looking for a novella that is under 15o pages this spooky season and love a book between step siblings that includes primal, knife and cum play with a mask kink, this is the one for you!
wasn’t as impressed by this one compared to others in the series. plot was meh, characters were meh, spice was meh, wanted more spice and less of the weird build up to it. enjoyed that it was halloween themed though!
Now I loved the tropes and instantly knew this was going to be amazing…but she blew it out of the park.
I enjoyed the backstory, the plot, the characters and the overall vibe. It was paced perfectly and I truly enjoyed the fact that the MCs built a relationship before and now that they are reconnecting it wasn’t rushed or out of the blue.
Knox (love the name lol) was down bad, but knew how to be patient and not rush things to scare his “lil sis”. He was teasing, caring and brutally honest. Not only pushing her towards him, but towards her dreams too. He also truly knew her and that was a highlight, because he cared more about her dreams than anything else.
And Oakley, she was a dumbass before, sure, she was young, but after doing what she did, I liked that she felt guilty (as she should) but didn’t fold immediately when he showed back up. I did like seeing her bloom once she felt safe with him. She needed the push and seeing her live her life for herself and not others was a treat … see what I did there?
And let me tell you, you want to preorder the Valentines novella because THOSE TROPES?!? Excuse me while I count down the minutes till we get more holiday goodness!!
Thank you a thousand for the e-arc!!
Quotes:
He’s here. I know it. I feel it.
"You smell sweet. Believe it or not, I've been dreaming of you for two years." "Keep dreaming." "Why would I continue dreaming when I finally have the real thing?"
"Complimenting you would involve getting on my knees and showing you how much I've missed you, audience be damned."
"You're the treat I've been craving for a long time."
"I want your screams, your moans, your fear; and the moment it shifts into desire. I want to see what you look like when you come for me and I want my name on your lips when you do."
"You're the only one who's ever truly cared, Oakley. Now let me show you how much I care for you."
She's held the key to me since we were seventeen, and fuck if she didn't just unlock the door for good.
"I went a long time without getting to touch you, Trickster," he explained. "I won't be living another moment of not."
Oakley, our FMC is brought into a family through her mother’s marriage to the mayor. Upon meeting him and his son, she is thrown into their world, she eventually bonds with Knox her step-brother. However, a night out ends in Knox being sent away for two years. Oakley, is thrust into a position of being primed for following on in her step-father’s footsteps. Of course, Knox returns with revenge in mind. At an Halloween event he ups the ante and they each realise it won’t be all laughs and giggles 🎃
I’m usually not crazy about novellas for obvious reasons. They’re so short and the story has to move so fast. But I genuinely enjoyed this one! First “Halloween “ read of October, complete! 👻🎃
Twisted, taboo, and utterly addictive. Fright Night gave me everything I wanted in a quick, dark Halloween read. It’s a stepbrother romance drenched in tension and temptation, the kind of story that doesn’t waste a second getting to the heat. Fast-paced, filthy, and deliciously wrong in all the right ways, I loved every messed-up minute of it. If you’re in the mood for something that feels like a wicked little secret being dark, dirty, and hauntingly hot, this one’s a must for your spooky season lineup
Quick read revolving around step siblings being reunited after one being sent away to prison. -step siblings -kn1fe play -stalking -medium spicy and dark
This is my 3rd holiday book Philpitt and I eat. Them. Up!!! They’re perfect. All of them. I love a masked stalker and step sibling trope. Combine them together on Halloween?! Pure cinema! Our masked MC is back years after being separated from his stepsister. This time his intentions are clear. She. Is. His. Need I say more? Yeah? Okay… there is a chase scene… now go read it!
A perfect spooky treat to trick you into falling for what goes bump in the night!
Or rather who….
I enjoyed reading this halloween themed novella, the characters Oakley & Knox were more than just step-siblings. They have history together, the main focus being this game of “Trick or treat” off pulling planks on each other when they were growing up.
One night changes everything with Oakley playing a trick which saw Knox in handcuffs and now as time has passed Knox wants to return the trick on Oakley. However, he can see the difference in her and how his father has turned his attention onto her, darkening her dreams.
And, Knox isn’t the only one wanting to play games with Oakley.
“Your actions took me away from you and that…that I will not forgive.”?
You find out more is going on with each character and what it will take to pull the ultimate trick or treat off…can they both finally have their dreams?
“You’re the treat I’ve been craving for a long time.”
Oh Knox the problem child, Oakley the golden child.
Things I want to remember…
Knox, was the “fuck-up.” The black sheep. “I’ve seen the way you look at her. At least now, she can start her life away from you.”Oakley Rivers, my stepsister. Soemthing caked to my back. Knox is heading home after a two year stint doing community service thanks to a prank gone awry and he has a plan. To start with, he's going to make sure Oakley knows exactly what part she'll play in his homecoming. It'll end when she's his and he can protect her in every way he can.
Oakley is not completely enthused about Knox's return. Not because she doesn't want him there, but because she feels like she didn't do enough to stop his father from sending him away two years ago. But since Knox doesn't pull any punches when he returns home, Oakley is drawn into his scheme. Which is to say, she's an unwitting participant. At first. It doesn't take long before she's anticipating the way he creeps up on her. The way he sneaks into her house. The way he leaves her wanting him close even though her head tells her she should be trying to stay away.
On Knox's end, he's obsessed. He's also determined to get Oakley out from under his father's thumb. If that means butting heads with the old man over brunch, he's more than willing to do just that. And if it means stalking her through a Halloween maze and making sure she enjoys every minute of it? Well, he's willing to do that, too.
A little B&E, a video Oakley watches more than once, a maze, a mask, a man who knows who and what he wants, and a lady who needs to delve deep and come to terms with her attraction so she can be the person she's supposed to be. *thumbs up*
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶 Out of 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 Would I reread : Yes.
I expected nothing other than extraordinary from this novella and it delivered. I love this series, and I'm super excited for the Valentines one up and coming next year, I'm so surprised to find out about it because I thought it was only the three, but I'm not complaining. Knox is actually so funny, he also just feels like the playful teasing type, he didn't push anything to much, and he was really respectful. Which is rare in these kinds of short novellas. (Seriously, the last ones I read this month were terrible) The plot stayed consistent and there wasn't just heaps of smut. Which was well written too.
I know it's a nervous twitch/habit but Oakley constantly licking her lips is really annoying, it's like 50 Shades all over again with Anastasia biting her lip.
3.5/ 5 ⭐️ Part of the Twisted Holidays. “Trick or Treat, Trickster. Choose wisely.” For a novella is was good. It started off unhinged but lost its steam.
I expected gritty, messy, and borderline forbidden — this was more like dark with a safety net. Step-sibling romance? Yeah, that’s the taboo, but it felt kinda muted.
The tension had potential to burn, but it never quite scorched. The story was fast, the chemistry there, but it didn’t shove me off the cliff the way I hoped.
Still, it’s a solid, quick read with that Halloween, taboo, slightly unhinged, dangerous vibe you crave — just not full-blown chaos.
✖ Not as dark as I wanted ✖ Step-sibling taboo a little toasted ✔ Raw enough to keep me hooked
A good vibe if you’re into the almost dangerous without the full dive.
I have read the others in this collection, and I look forward to reading Be Mine in February. 🖤
Well I absolutely loved this cheeky little Halloween Novella! Whilst only a short read, you get everything you could want from this. I mean the plot is fantastic, you have Oakley and Knox, step-siblings who love a good prank, until one goes too far and Knox gets taken away. Years later he has come back with a few tricks of his own, and pleeenty of little treats in there as well 😏 It has a perfect balance between storyline and smut, sometimes I find Novellas lack in plot and are basically pure smut but this one was a pleasant surprise and great read!
If you’re looking for a quick read that feels like it should be a naughty little secret then this is the one for you!!
🌶🌶🌶/5 * * * This was good! I wish we had more backstory, but that’s the thing about novellas: they always leave you wanting more. The relationship between Knox and Oakley was very quick, but I felt like I at least got enough of their previous time together to understand and root for them. Their parents can kick rocks, though. They were some of the worst hoity-toity people. Thankfully, they weren’t religious on top of that, because that would have been icing on the hate cake.
My Overall Rating 3.75/5 This holiday novella was a great addition to the Twisted Holidays series by M.L. Philpitt. Knox is a crazy obsessed step brother to Oakley. I wanted to absolutely love this story and while I definitely enjoyed it, it left me wanting more. It started off really strong with completely unhinged behavior, but I felt like it became less unhinged as the story continued and the climax just petered out without much fanfare. Regardless I will absolutely read the next release in February. Setting 5/5 Plot 3/5 Characters 4/5 Emotional Impact/Depth 3/5 Gut Rating/Vibes 3/5 Spice 3/5
This one was just okay for me. Compared to the other two, it was a bit disappointing since I really enjoyed those. Neither the plot nor the characters did much for me this time around. The writing was solid, but I just didn’t feel much from it overall.
I was also expecting more of a Halloween vibe. It fit the season fine, but I couldn’t help feeling like it could’ve gone further. Still, since I loved Silent Night and Egg Hunt, I’ll probably pick up the next one—especially because these are such quick reads. If I don’t end up loving it either, at least it’ll be over fast 😅
🎃dark romance 🎃Halloween theme 🎃novella 🎃step-siblings (recent) 🎃stalking 🎃kn!fe play 🎃dual POV Pet name:Trickster (not the best imo)
The other books in the series were definitely better. There were a lot of parts that were a little too cringy for me and very on the nose internal and external dialogue.
Knox was great until the lollipop scene. Then he totally lost me. Not allowed *sprays him with spray bottle*
This is a novella so I rate it differently than a full length novel.
These Twisted Holiday Novellas are my absolute favorite, and I think this one, Fright Night is my favorite.
Loved that you got to know characters with the flashbacks, made you understand them more. Knox I couldn't love him more, the way he come off a little unhinged, but yet so caring. Oakley, I cant even be mad with her, we've all done dumb stuff. I steam was perfect and the Halloween vibes were on point.
Quick and easy Halloween read! Like with many short stories, you get the feeling you’ve landed in the middle of a larger tale—and it definitely leaves you wanting more. Themes include: Forbidden romance (step-siblings) Revenge plot Primal play Kink: fear It was short, spicy, and perfect for a quick brain break during the holiday season. If you're in the mood for something dark, sexy, and fast-paced, this one’s for you.
