When not working on the next novel, she can usually be found playing with her grandkids, working on craft projects, studying genealogy, or reading a steamy romance novel. Echoes of Shadow and Smoke
The sense of excitement continues and escalates in this the 4th installment of L.D. McRae 's Assentia Captives series.
The story starts with a quick look into the past where Rebelina is born to Cmdr. Boldar and his wife Ceri, who dies in childbirth. It sets the stage for why he is so protective of her, and why Tor has to fight so hard for Boldar's approval to accept Rebel's love.
We go from there to the present on the Caracali where Dr. Tamara, in her mad quest for information on the interdimensional walker, has drugged and forced Reacher to relive his tortured past on Tippenahboe, nearly killed his mate Bram in the process.
Both of them are hiding a secret that Dr. Tamara will do anything to find; the identity of the walker Arcelio, who is in danger himself, trapped between dimensions and hiding from the Demion Slag, a monster of smoke and smog, who has developed a taste for flesh. (I kept wanting to tell her: be careful what you wish for...)
At the same time, Jasmien, her Aditas mate Duken and her lover Sabi, have...let's just say.... some complications to deal with. Luckily, Jas / Yaz is persuasive. 😎
Meanwhile Zaiden and "Princess-Pain-in-the-ass" Jenulia have bonded, a fact that his driven the ambitious Devon, her hated former consort, to even more violent acts of desperation, including attempted murder. He fails in this, and pays the price.
At the end, love conquers all. The bad guys are mostly dealt with and all of our couples find a way forward. It is only the Assentia, the God-like ancients who created the various races, along with their allies, their altered Assentia laws, and their all-too-flawed machinations that remain to be dealt with in another book.
Them and the long term fate of one final character: "Sovos the Butcher", the real hero Sin / Sunjun who started me on this saga.... Ms. McRae, I need another book of Sin.
