Little Shake of Salt

Creature Cafe #15

by Clio Evans

Creatures of all kinds go to the Barista to find love, including the bossy mermaid, Marina.

When Marina is rudely portaled into an apartment by the Barista’s daughter, she demands her fated mate be found as repayment for the inconvenience. The Barista charges Layla, the new Grim Reaper, with the task.

Demi is a rugby player, a sailor, and most of all—certain she’ll never fall in love. But when her first date goes from fishy flirting to being kidnapped by her hot mermaid date, she jumps headfirst into the deep end of lust.

But as the prickly mermaid and tough sailor get to know each other, trouble brews across the seas. Will the storms drown them, or will fate be the lighthouse that guides Marina and Demi to the shore?

This novella includes the following:
Sapphic Mermaid Romance
Sailor FMC
Muscle Mommy
Size Difference
Fated Mates
Oviposition
And more ;)

The Creature Cafe Series follows the Barista and the monsters and humans he matches. Each book has a different monster finding their fated mate, tons of spicy scenes, and monsters who love harder than they bite. Books 12-20 can be read without the first 11 books, but still recommended to read in order.

I usually love this series but I am soooo burnt out on smut and unfortunately it’s making a 109 page book feel like torture which sucks because I need the rest of this book for the plot moving forward. They all are interconnected and have just enough plot that I’ll want later.

I was going to DNF this but I’ll pause instead. 🤞🏻

Do you ever wish there was more side difference in sapphic monster romance? Well I do, and this one delivered. The book, like all in this series, was very spice with safe kink. Marina was ready for Demi and briefly kidnapped her mid date, which, yeah I like me a villainous monster mommy. She did learn from her mistakes. Demi was pretty blunt and took longer to come around to the fated mates thing than Marina did, but they found their step pretty quick.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: kidnapping (brief), death by drowning, projectile injury, blood, past parent death

I really liked Marina and Demi as a couple. Given that Marina is a mermaid and Demi is a human sailor, they suited each other really well. I also liked that Demi was one of the first FMC who actually wanted to take things slow. Because of her past with her creature exes, she was more aware of mating bonds and what they represented. Since her past relationships all ended because they'd found their true soul mates, she wanted to be absolutely sure that Marina was meant for her before she started anything.

What caused me to rate this book so low was the execution and pacing of the story. I understand that novellas have a limited amount of space for a plot to happen, but it still felt rushed in some areas. In particular, it was the spice scenes that disappointed me the most ☹️ With its closeness in placements and the scenes ending far too quickly, it took away the enjoyment of seeing Marina and Demi forming an intimate bond/connection.

Overall, the concept and the characters were great, but the quick formatting of the book is what ultimately led it to its downfall. It's such a shame because the romance itself had so much potential, and if given the chance to grow and breathe, it would have been a much more enjoyable read 🙂

I noticed how Clio made a connection with a short story from one of her other books - Sins & Sirens from “A Collection of Claws, Fangs, & Other Things” 😊 Matt, Delphin and Aegean were briefly brought up by Marina and luckily for me, I recognised their names 🎊 They don't make an appearance so it's not a deal breaker whether you have read their story or not, but it does give you a little enjoyment when you realise that the "Barista-Universe" goes beyond the known connection of the "Creature Cafe Series" and the "Warts & Claws Inc. Series" 🥰

This story ends with a HEA for this couple 🫧 Up next is "Little Howl of Moon", an MM romance featuring Steel - the Barista's Werewolf nephew and Oliver - the Human Chef... who is also a single dad 🐺👨🏼‍🍳

I neeeeeed Layla’s story like I need air.

This one was fun! I really enjoyed how Marina started to soften once she got closer to Demi, it felt like much needed character growth. They were so cute together and I seriously love how interconnected all of the stories are, I know they can be read as standalones but the story that interweaves between all of them is just ✨chef’s kiss.✨

Absolutely recommend reading them all to understand the characters, the backstories and the overarching lore!

This was fine, I mwan I guess it's just maybe a bit off to me that every FF romance has fisting and I just wonder why that is? I feel like that's kinda extreme but idk I get these books are meant to be like intense and kinky since they're short but still.

The siren aspect is cool but I forgot I really just need to turn off my brain for these and just enjoy them.

The story itself was good but also I think because there are so many characters now it's like hard to keep up who's who lol

[Nora's Bookish Corner · Rating 4 out of 5]

⭐️3.75 - I'm so glad we're back in this world!! Its so chaotic and silly and I am so NERVOUS for whats coming next!! The romance was sweet and very insta lust driven, but thats how all the books in the series are lol. Barista is still my fave character and I love his cameos! I'm so happy the next one comes out next week!!

[Betty · Rating 4 out of 5]

Good

Ok this book is spicy, short and good but... Definitely is confusing if you only read 1 out of this series. I will say I will not read the rest since the others are not sapphic. It also ends in a somewhat cliffhanger.

[annmarie · Rating 4 out of 5]

Solid

it’s was good. super fast paced, prob of the whole series honestly. not my favorite sapphic story line from author but no hate on the characters. love them just think it was too fast. also love the storyline info from the OG characters.

[Meg Wake · Rating 5 out of 5]

We're back, baby!! I've missed the Cresture Cafe, rhe Barista, his family, and all the nonsense that happens with these monsters and their mates. This story was as amazing as ever, and I can't wait for more!

I can't believe I forgot about this fun little series but hey at least I can binge a bunch of them now

Having our monster be a mermaid was so fun and i am very curious about what's going on

This was the first book I’d read in this series, and I was immediately sold because sapphic monster romance? Say less.

I read this in ONE sitting, and it was short, sweet and very spicy.

Such a fun, quick read, and now I definitely need to check out the rest of the series!
