Greer Rivers lives by the mountains with her real-life book husband and their three furbabies. Obsessed with history and folklore, she’s also a sucker for reality TV and proudly owns her titles as a messy eater, shirt ruiner, and steadfast non-sharer of food and wine. She adores romance, especially the dark and twisty kind, and her main goal as an author is to create a safe place for readers to feel too much.
Now this was a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish. Dishearten is the second book in the second generation of the tattered curtain series and it certainly didn’t disappoint as Greer Rivers put her own spin on the classic Alice in Wonderland story.
If you have read book one you will understand a bit more of the context of the story, but here’s a quick refresher: Sol, Kian and Sev the FMCs fathers bargained an arranged marriage between their first born daughters and the Fury sons many years ago. Now of course the guys didn’t really think that this debt would be cashed in but King Fury saw an opportunity to protect his family and strengthen his alliances, and as such on each of the daughters 22nd birthday they were to Wed a Fury son.
In the first book of the series we say Luna and Orion’s story but now Hatton and Lucy are taking the spotlight. At the end of unveiled we discover that Lucy has become aware of the Fury x Troisguard daughter bargain and she decides to flee and it is very calculated on her part because after months of running she ends up on the Wander Isle and similar to wonderland it is full of secrets at every single turn. This is where Lucy finds herself getting a job at the Black Rabbit so she can find out any information possible that may protect her family.
Now, we also have Hatton who is the Fury son that Lucy is arranged to wed. Hatton isn’t as strict with the marriage contract in comparison to his brother Orion and this leads him to making a deal with Lucy’s father Kian McKenna that if he finds her first he will end the marriage contract on the basis that he will protect Lucy himself. Throughout her time on the run Lucy has been leaving calling cards so to speak, which are cards from her father’s deck to note that she was in this place previously but has moved on. But not all hope is lost as these calling cards are how Hatton ends up on Wander Isle and he finds Lucy or Alice as she goes by here quite quickly.
Hatton finds himself down the rabbit hole that is the black rabbit which is ruled by a man named Castle who uses this as a place of manipulation to gather information on his customers. To keep his identity and Lucy’s a secret he takes on the Hatter persona so he can get a job at the club so he can keep a close eye on her.
I loved seeing both Lucy and Hatton’s character development from start to finish. Lucy was a woman who was running from her past and present and she slowly grew more confident and also with Hattons guidance because he knew the fierce woman she could be. Similar to Hatton, he went into this search believing that Lucy would always be the one that got away because those he cared about always got hurt in his world but he stepped up and became the man who fought and protected her.
This book was dark, sinful and honestly kept my kindle firmly in my hands at all times as I needed to know what happened next.
Thank you to the author who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭
Greer held nothing back in this twisted reimaging of Alice in Wonderland. And the tagline for this book is perfect - He's her greatest threat, she's his only peace, and he gambled the one thing he loves most to keep her safe.
The very beginning was a bit slow for me (first chapter or two), but after that, all bets were off.
Yes, this book is long - but it doesn't truly feel that long once you get into the thick of everything.
I love that Greer truly plays on the fairytale and uses those elements to help create and tell this story. I love how she uses the ideology of the characters in Alice in Wonderland as a way to help readers understand the characters and their roles.
Add in the dark twists and turns with families and their history, Greer weaves one hell of a story.
As you can guess, I have purposely said very little about this one because this story needs to be experienced as though you have only the blurb to go on. Trust me, you'll thank me after you fall down the rabbit hole.
Bravo, Greer. Your talent never ceases to amaze me.
I have read almost all the books by Greer and was ready for this one, but boy, the world-building, the emotions, the push and pull were not at all what I was expecting! I loved every single thing about it. 🙌🏼
Hatten and Lucy are my fav now lol 🙃
Lucy, that girl is doing everything for others, and I loved her so much, and Hatten? That man is gone, even though his brain says no, his heart knows the truth! Loved these 2 so much! 💕
After that last epilogue, I cannot wait for Dash's story now!
Tropes: Hidden Identity, stalker, Alice in wonderland retelling - kindo of
~I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.~
I was blessed to be chosen for the ARC team on this and you heard it here, she did it again folks. Stellar showing. I was hooked. I was wildly entertained the whole way through and ravenous for the before and next stories.
Smut? 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 Alice in Wonderland? ♥️🎩🐇🐱🐛🍰☕ ASHEVILLE NC MENTIONED🚨🚨🚨😍🌄
Let me sing Greer's praises for a minute bcs I have infinite respect for how she handles really rough topics in her books. You can find the trigger warnings for her books both at the beginning and on her website and the way she presents these hard things is so obviously done with thought and care. The inclusion of disturbing and graphic scenes or topics isn't done gratuitously, nor is it the focus on the book or the character's only personality trait. Disturbing things don't need to be avoided, and Greer uses them the way they should be: devices that inform story, not overpower it. Books can have dark themes and dark events take place without it being assault-as-love. I'm so, so, SO for dark romance stories that aren't full of MMC-on-FMC-violence-packaged-as-love. We're better than that. Greer IS better than that. 💅
If anyone is wondering if these are truly standalone, yes. I unfortunately so far have only read Dreadful (highly recc, review and blog post) from the Tattered Curtain series and I didn't read book one of the Frayed Satin series, but I don't feel like I was missing anything vital to the story. Rest assured, I will certainly go back and read them now. But because I didn't read the other books, I needed a bit of info, which is where this comes in -->
--> I have a pet peeve about second and third (and so on) books being very info-dumpy about catching the reader up on what happened in book one, even in interconnected standalones. I feel like sometimes it can be very hand-holding, and bcs these books are interconnected but standalone you have to have some kind of way to (re)situate yourself in the world, and I really like how Greer did it. It felt woven into the context as opposed to a giant multi-page word vomit rehashing all of book one which I really appreciated.
The Alice and Wonderland things were SO on the nose. Kitchy? Yes. But, endlessly entertaining. It was fun to see all the ways the characters and tropes played out between the source material and this book, and it made me wish that I was more familiar with Lewis Carroll's work.
The characters didn't have as much depth as I would have liked, but I don't think they needed it? We were able to draw on the archetypes of the source characters (Alice, Hatter, Rabbit, Queen of Hearts) to have our expectations pre-set and be able to fill in some gaps, and I think that bcs Greer's characters stayed true enough to Carroll's characters, we were able to sit back and enjoy the story. I think it also worked really well to blend it into a story that takes places in the southeastern United States on a worn-down little coastal barrier island. It's not bright and shiny, but it's not "paddle faster, I hear banjos" either. We don't get a lot of (good) rep in stories like this and it was really refreshing to see it take place 1) not in a big fancy city, and 2) in the southeast where "the mountains and mountainfolk are creepy let's be ruralist about it" isn't the focus or atmosphere-maker. Things can exist in the south and the story won't fall apart, yall. Also, again: ASHEVILLE, REPRESENT 🫶
This book was pretty hefty, and I feel like the time was used very well. I think the timeline of it was a bit short (but that's pretty par for the course in this genre), but I never felt like it was dragging or rushing. I think there can be a tendency to quickly wrap up boss fights when you know there's gonna be a HEA (not a spoiler, I checked, it's advertised), but I think that like the rest of the book it was well paced and proportional. Just an excellent story. Now I really need to go read the rest of the books bcs I am THIRSTY.
Dark , steamy , emotionally charged and 100 % addictive !! Well I really was just taken on the ride of my life and completely blown away in all the best ways .Greer had done it again !! What you ask ? Well that’s simple , nailed it and delivered one of the best books I’ve read this year . Dishearten was and is everything, i mean everything. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that plays on all your emotions in ways you won’t even be expecting. You’ll experience everything from being utterly speechless, to yelling outta pure frustration. Your heart will feel like it’s beating so fast and then bam being acrushed the next , you’ll be glued to the edge of your seat anticipating what will happen from one second to the next . And you’ll find yourself rooting so freaking hard . I’m such a sucker for a great dark fairytale reimagining ( and come on guys ) what’s better than Alice In Wonderland!! What you get - love , passion , pain , secrets , feuding families, villains , morally gray and unhinged characters, off the charts chemistry, a heroine who gives as good as she gets , drama , obstacles, intrigue and suspense, push and pull , twists and turns and so much more . I seriously was not prepared for how utterly captivated I was going to become with Lucy and Hatton . I think it was how multilayered and complex they were that had me falling hook like and sinker down the rabbit hole . Their is absolutely one book that everyone should read , because words cannot start to do it enough justice
I have come to love the attention to detail that Greer Rivers puts into these "retellings"
I started with Phantom and that's when I knew that I had found an author that didn't just take these classics and twist them slightly to be able to use words like "inspired by" "retelling" or whatever else. She has taken every single classic and paid it so much love and respect that it's impossible not to fall in love with the writing. The tone of the books. The clear flattery that these books make up.
Dishearten is one of those books. When I learned this would be an Alice in Wonderland story...I was very curious as to how that would work. I wasn't expecting THIS. Our two mains in this are so much like their inspired by counterparts that it had me giggling and kicking my feet.
Greer has taken this beloved story and turned it into something darker, yet so hauntingly beautiful at the same time. Seeing Kian as a father made my heart warm because it very much reminded me of his book.
The attention to details in this were so good. Every "side" storyline had a finish. Everything wrapped up so well. There was nothing left really unanswered that can't be in book 3.
I can't wait to see what story she does for book 3. I have an inkling based on the ending for this one...but I look forward to seeing if I'm right or not.
Thank you Greer Rivers and your team for this ARC. As you saw on Discord, I devoured it.
I am once again blown away by this author and her writing. You get immersed in the world she paints with her words making it nearly impossible to put the book down.
Dishearten takes you through some twists and turns and leaves you on the edge of your seat. I honestly did not see some of those curve balls coming and it makes reading the story that much more fun and enjoyable. The dark and haunting world/atmosphere the author creates is so well written and detailed and really leaves you with a strikingly vivid picture of this world.
I also love the heartbreakingly beautiful love story our main characters take us through. Hatch, while whitty and charming, is also completely unhinged and feral when it comes to his girl and keeping her safe and protected at whatever cost. And Lucy, while I thought she would be quiet and reserved, very much has a fighting spirit and sassiness to her that I love. She is her father's daughter after all. There's some yearning, a bit of stalking with a dash of deception, and plenty of emotional tension but it ultimately leads to a very happy ending. And while we also get Hatch and Lucy's story, I love how there's some hints and breadcrumbs thrown in to set up our next couple's journey for book 3!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait until book 3. Thank you so much to Greer and her team for this ARC!
“Which one is it going to be baby? Run to me. Or make me chase you again.”
Greer…I fear I am never going to get over this book. I have been anticipating this book and it genuinely exceeded my expectations as all Greer’s books do. I am absolutely obsessed with Hatch and Lucy. This book is perfect for dark romance, arranged marriage, and masked MMC lovers.
Hatch is the MMC everyone! He’s extremely intelligent and absolutely obsessed with Lucy. He has a protective side and always makes sure she feels safe around him. SWOON! Lucy is the perfect fit to his madness. She has a good spirit and is super sassy. I absolutely adored watching them become closer throughout the book.
The twists and turns were epic. I am so excited for the next book…you have no idea. I loved the Alice in Wonderland elements. They fit the story so well and were honestly so fun to read about. I loved the appearances from other beloved characters. I cannot stress enough how much I love everything Greer writes! Read this series immediately!
I received Disheartened as an ARC and am thoroughly happy that I did. Disheartened is book 2 in the Frayed Satin series by Greer Rivers. The books can be read as stand-alones but there is overlap in the books. It is recommended to read the books in order. I decided to read this book as a stand-alone. I am completely hooked now and will be reading the whole series!!
The Frayed Satin series is based on famous ballets set in a mafia background. I love all things Alice in Wonderland so I was overjoyed at finding another book set in this world, loosely. I was not disappointed. There is a messiness to the writing that makes you feel like you're in Wonderland. The dialog makes you feel like you are everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Trust no one.
Talk Her Through, chapter 18, is one of the hottest chapters and everyone's clothes stay on for the most part. Yes, we get a steamy Good Girl. I would classify it as a slow burn romance that explodes. The edging is absolutely maddening in the best ways. Spice Rating: 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
Though the storylines are interconnected, you cannot go into this book thinking it will have the same vibes as the first book in the series, Unveil.. Alice in Wonderland is a fairytale that I have never remotely had any interest in but a few of the characters’ names and story themes were familiar to my mind going into Hatch and Lucy’s book. I cannot say how close a retelling Dishearten is to the original Alice in Wonderland, but Greer Rivers seamlessly was able to tie in a whole mafia-esque storyline into this whimsical and quirky childhood classic and make it actually make sense. The character development in this world is something all authors should strive for. There is so much emotion, passion, and devastation written into these pages, that as a reader you become so thoroughly vested in their HEA. I am not sure that this book is for everyone, but I absolutely loved it. LIke I loved it so much, I dare say this is my favorite book of the year so far.
A Dark ballet reimagining that will completely steal your heart? Look no further than the newest book from Greer. I've been a huge fan of her books since forever and this new one has me completely hooked. This book is just PERFECT and it's going to be an amazing read for anyone who enjoys a dark romance with arranged marriage and a masked MMC. The relationship between Hatch and Lucy was so swoonworthy and I ate up every single chapter of it. The way that Greer perfectly captures the elements of a reimagining into her own version is just one of a kind. The Alice in Wonderland vibes were also so so fun in this. This was just EVERYTHING TO ME. Seriously, I can't wait for the next book and I need it immediately!
*Thank you Greer Rivers for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
I knew I was going to like the book just from the dedication alone. 🥹
Literally a trip into wonder land. This Alice and Wonderland retelling will make you question if you’re on drugs but the writing was so descriptive it was like you were literally in Wonderland.
I always love next gen because of the all the characters we’ve seen before and Kian was not a disappointment at all. (Go read Rogue if you haven’t)
Some of the tropes: Stalker Hidden Identity Spice Morally Grey “Touch her and Die” but like for REAL
At one point Hatton refers to people as“Future corpses” ; had me cackling. Hatton Fury is top tier Antihero MMC
No less than who Lucy deserves. Lucy who definitely comes into her own though throughout the story.
So if you’re interested in a dark romance down the rabbit hole, this one is for you.
As always, Greer seems to knock it out of the park with these retellings.
At one point, I told my husband I needed to finish the book because it was edge-of-your-seat suspense.
I started the series way out of order, but I'm so glad I did because it made me appreciate these characters more. It was also the first time I had found an author who had a FMC with the same name as me and I fell more in love with the series.
I wasn't a huge Alice in Wonderland fan growing up, but I knew enough to catch all of the references from Chessy, to the Bandersnatch, down to the tea.
I can't wait to see how Book 3 plays out. If Orion and Hatch weren't the obsessive over-the-top hero for you, I have no doubts Dash will be.
Thank you Greer for giving me the opportunity to read this.
I have discovered this author on a kindle's day and I am so glad that I did because I really loved the style. Here we have a Wonderland atmosphere, an emotional healing journey, and I especially loved the way Lucy’s character evolves from someone who runs from every threat into someone who claims power over her own life. The mystery occasionally felt too much for me and dense because there are many side characters and connections to earlier books, but the payoff is worth it and I promise to get back to the other stories.
So, if you enjoy obsessive heroes, secret identities, found family and a very literal “she runs, he chases” dynamic, this book delivers exactly what it promises as in for me, now I go to where all it began.
Greer Rivers kills it again. The world of Wander Isle is fascinating to read about. While this book isn't a "fantasy," it perfectly builds a modern-day world with fantastical vibes. One thing Rivers is great at is describing mental health/ altered-mind situations in such an authentic way. While reading this book, you truly feel what Lucy and Hatch are feeling. The effects of drugs, the PTSD, the desperation, the passion, and the demoralization. You are right along with them.
This story fits in perfectly with the Tattered Curtain and Frayed Satin series. It shares a unique story while seamlessly fitting into the world and continuing the overarching storyline. I can't wait to see what she does next!
This dark retelling of Alice and Wonderland was riveting! It catches you at the prologue and keeps you entertained until the Finale. Hatter is a moral grey MMC that is searching for his runaway bride that happens to be hiding out as Alice on Wander Isle. The FMC Lucy is one third of the daughters of a syndicate. She runs away to keep her family and loved ones safe. Through twists and turns the couple finds a way to their HEA. There are plenty of characters and nods to the original story of Alice and Wonderland, but Greer does an amazing job with creative storytelling to make it her own. This is a standalone in an interconnected series. There are spicy scenes and heavy content. Please read trigger warnings. It ends in a cliffhanger for the next book that will make you want to read it!
This was my first book by Greer Rivers and WOW... I'm officially hooked. New reader fan right here!
I absolutely love fairytale retellings and reimaginings, especially Alice in Wonderland, so I couldn't wait to see Greer's take on it and she completely blew me away. I loved how she wove those familiar Wonderland elements into such a dark, unique, and addictive story while still making it feel entirely their own
Once I got into the story, I couldn't put it down. Every twist had me wanting "just one more chapter," and before I knew it, I was flying through the pages and staying up wasaay past my bedtime . ((I mean... who needs sleep anyways? Not me ))
I already can't wait to read more from Greer Rivers!
y’all I was blown away! If I could rate this more than 5 stars I would. I also would have had this done in one night if someone (my husband) didn’t take my kindle away and tell me to go to sleep. I absolutely loved their story, so much curious things happening. So many secrets coming out in the open, he’s hiding behind a mask to keep her safe. Tho she’s pretty good at keeping herself safe.
This romance story is an Alice in Wonderland retelling. So many fun hidden references you just have to know them to find them. Keep your eyes on the crumbs you never know what’s left behinds.
Yowza!!!! Dishearten by Greer Rivers is the enormously entertaining story of Hatton and Lucy. She leave her family to avoid a forced marriage. Hatton wants to find her and keep her safe…for his own reasons. Loved the references to the cards, Wonderland, and the dark underlying story that permeates everything.
Hatton is everything one could ever want in a dark hero. Lucy is everything you could want from a fierce, determined princess. I loved everything about this story and sunk into this world easily…didn’t want it to end!!! Fantastic read!!!
This was such an intricate, complex, stunning dark romance with a nod to Alice in Wonderland. Lucy and Hatton had amazing push/pull steamy chemistry, their characters a grown-up, salacious nod to both Alice and the Mad Hatter. There was the signature suspense and action with this series, driven by family drama, propelling the plot forward with all the twists, as well as a beautiful romantic development—loved Hatton’s protective gruffness and Lucy’s inconspicuous innocence. I fell down the rabbit hole and was completely wrapped up in this story 4.25 stars Thanks to the author for the the eARC
I finished this book in 48 hours. Greer has done it again. She has this magical way of making two absolutely enticing main characters. Lucy and Hatch reminded me SO much of Lucy’s parents 🤭. Dishearten was incredible, enchanting with heartbreaking and gut wrenching moments. Greer was able to encompass the feelings of anxiety, PTSD and depression in a way that gives a real insight into someone’s inner monologue while they’re going through it. As someone who has dealt with all 3, it was beautiful to get to experience a FMC that you could relate to on deeper, personal level.
A dark romance spin on Alice in wonderland and oh my gosh it’s one you don’t want to miss! All the twist that happen and just when you think you have an understanding something else comes up and now you’re on a different thought. This was absolutely amazing! And the ending!!!! I did have a feeling that was going to happen just not in the way it did, needless to say I can’t wait for the next one!!!
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Greer Rivers absolutely killed this book! From the very first page I was hooked, there is just something about the way Greer is able to give us so many references to the retellings but incorporating it just right. I can’t wait for the next book esopaclyy with that ending! I have a few ideas but I know whatever it will be Greer will give us the most amazing story ever!! Full review to come!
💕Thank you so much for the ARC! This review is my opinion.💕
Wanders of Wonders This Alice in wonderland retelling is without a doubt worth every last star. It delivers on a silver platter! Hatton Fury is pure perfection in his quest. Lucy has a past full of secrets as deep as the ones The King of Vegas built his kingdom on. With all that we have a side character Harry that must, he must, be mentioned. Read it and you will understand. I couldn't put it down, the next one can't come soon enough!
Lucy is a runner. We learned that in the first book and it’s no surprise that Hatton is a hunter. But once he finds her, all bets are off. Including the ones he made with her father but especially the ones he made with himself.
“ “I’m having a real hard time recovering from how fu***** good those three words sound coming from your heart.”
Fantastic book! Unputdownable! Go ahead and fall down The Rabbit Hole, you know you want to.
Alice in Wonderland dark retelling, check! A MMC that is very much a stalker, extra check! Lucy was no damsel for sure. I enjoyed her balance in this story. While she was seemingly innocent she was not one to let others take things over. Hatton omg Hatton he was absolutely delicious and a little unhinged lol. Their chemistry was fun to read. I enjoyed all the drama outside that was occurring.
Incredibly amazing storytelling of my own favorite classic. Hatton/Hatter is a deep and twisted character that devours your heart and soul while reading. He is devious, obsessive, a bit mad, and I loved every second of it. Lucy/Alice has an inner strength that has served her well, but when time runs out it’s Hatter that helps her find her way. This story is whimsical, deliciously dark, and very intense but it grabs your attention from the start and doesn’t let go even when it’s over.
