Wings and Secrets in ‘Seraph’s Tears’

Eve is trapped in a cult built on lies, fear and control. Every day is a struggle to survive. Escaping seems impossible until she is sent by Reverend Zorababel to a remote mansion. There, she becomes the housekeeper of a being that is not of this world. Fifty years ago, angels fell from the heavens, and ever since they have longed to return. One of them is Gabriel, a fallen angel on a mission to help his kind find their way home. But everything changes when a captivating woman crosses his path.

Anna Evernight’s writing is cinematic and atmospheric. From the very first page, you can almost hear the creaking floors and feel the chill of the old mansion. The story is told from both Eve’s and Gabriel’s perspectives, allowing the reader to experience their emotions and inner struggles. Both main characters are well-developed and evoke genuine empathy through their pain, hope and longing.

The supporting characters remain somewhat in the background, but this leaves room for growth in the next installments. Evernight masterfully conveys the oppressive atmosphere within the cult, and the way the angels’ powers work feels original and refreshing. The plot is partly predictable for seasoned fantasy readers, yet that doesn’t diminish the enjoyment.

‘Seraph’s Tears’ is an intriguing start to a new fantasy series filled with emotion, mystery and supernatural allure. Thanks to its haunting ending, I’m already eager to see what happens next when the sequel releases in February.

Thank you to Anna Evernight for providing the ARC of ‘Seraph’s Tears’.

Eve is in a cult that she is trying to get out of, she goes to a mythical creature home to be his housekeeper. Gabriel is a mythical creature trying to find his way again and has found himself falling for the human he didn't think would happen. Would fate have its way or will Eve be in the cult forever? I loved Eve and Gabriel together and the gothic vibes

2.5 stars 🌟

Although I liked the premise of this book, with the fallen Seraph and finding their way within the human world. The whole book felt slightly rushed and disjointed, I don’t feel it flowed very well and the romance went from 0 to 100 with out any really build in tension between the two characters.

I liked the element of the church and the cult, however, even the ending seemed hurried and almost anticlimactic after the build up.

I also struggled with some of the language used to describe the spicy scenes.

Overall it was an interesting premise but not one I’d been rushing to read the second.

Thanks to the author for the ARC copy.

3.5 stars rounded up to a 4

Thank you to Anna for an advanced reader copy of this book! I loved the atmosphere and the setting of this book, and the mysterious gothic manor itself. The concept of falling angels (seraphs) is interesting to me and I really liked that aspect. I also liked Eve’s story of wanting to be free of her cult and the idea that in order to gain her freedom she has to offer the creature up that she’s falling for.

I enjoy fated mates so that’s always a bonus for me! There were times the pacing didn’t quite work for me and I personally wasn’t a fan of the third act conflict, however I still very much loved Gabriel and Eve and enjoyed my time reading this! There was a lot to like about this and it was refreshing from what I usually read! It was a great start to the series and I’m intrigued to see how the next story unfolds!

Review: Seraph’s Tears

[I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author. This review reflects my honest and unbiased opinion]

THE WHAT: Eve ends up on the doorstep of the Herald of Death after her controlling pastor forces her into a housekeeping job to “prove” his suspicions about the Seraph. She takes the job hoping it’ll be her chance to finally escape the cult’s grip but what she never saw coming was falling for the Herald himself.

THE VIBE: Control, religious cult/fundamentalism, creature/human, fantasy, romantasy, dual POV.

THE HOW: We follow Eve as she tries to break free from Zor and the cult, all while getting pulled deeper into Gabriel’s world. The tension builds as their connection grows, and you’re left wondering if what they have is strong enough for her to risk everything.

THE HIT: I thought the author did a beautiful job with the back story of both MC’s and the overall character development. I didn’t know what to expect from Gabriel in moments but seeing him be delicate with Eve was heartwarming. I also thought that the additional of some of the supporting characters was smart and helps set the stage for the next books. The spice was also on point.

THE MISS: I would have loved for the author to dive into the indoctrination and religious fundamentalism a bit more. I think that would have helped the reader understand Eve’s thought process and decisions better. I also hated the word “cunny” - immediate ick.

THE REC: This book is for anyone that loves a spicy romantasy. It hit all the boxes for me while keeping me on my toes.

THE OVERALL: I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to my followers.

Overall, this book gets 4/5 from me.

Spice Rating: 3/5

"Seraph's Tears" delivers a gorgeous, brooding atmosphere that paranormal romance fans will devour. Anna Evernight has crafted a truly captivating story, pairing the dark, isolated world of Eve—a cult escapee struggling for autonomy—with the otherworldly power and pain of Gabriel, a magnificent fallen angel.
The book excels at atmosphere and chemistry. The gothic setting of the isolated manor is a perfect backdrop for the forced proximity and slow-burn intensity between the two main characters. Their dynamic is the heart of the story, exploring the complex tension between survival, duty, and an undeniable fated mate connection. The exploration of Eve’s religious trauma and Gabriel’s quest for redemption adds a compelling emotional depth that elevates the romance beyond a typical fantasy pairing. If you love dark fantasy, fated mates, and a romance that will leave you breathless, this is a must-read. "Seraph's Tears" is a successful, emotionally charged start to the AngelFall Series. Highly recommended!I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Review 📝 (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ⚠️)

Seraphs Tears is an upcoming release on November 13, 2025 (very exciting!). You follow the POV of Eve and Gabriel as she becomes his new housekeeper in this giant mansion near the Moors, simultaneously she is also a ‘spy’ for her cult to get Gabriel to join them and be worshiped. Eve has her own agenda to follow. Gabriel, a Seraph, and his sedge fell from the sky 50 years ago and all he wants is to get them back home, but where is home? A place or a person?

This book has beauty and the beasts themes which is one of my favorite tropes! I really enjoyed this book, I found the story to be interesting and unique, (learning about the Seraphs was probably one of my favorite parts!). It also sheds some light on religious cults and how badly it can affect someone’s psyche. I loved Gabriel and Eve's chemistry, sure there’s some miscommunication but how can Eve tell him the truth? Girls gotta look out for number 1! There’s some pretty good spice 🌶️🫶🏻 in this book as well as some buckle up! I’m excited to see what happens next!

Of course, I want to say thank you to The Nerd Fam and Anna Evernight for the gifted eARC. I wanted to like Seraph’s Tears so much. It had such a cool premise with angels and cults – it seemed so unique. Unfortunately, this story fell short for me.
While the story started off well enough, I felt like I kept getting spoon-fed information. The relationship felt pretty forced, and the cult dynamic was interesting. I felt like I was getting whiplash with how our FMC felt about them. When she finally made a decision, it felt like that decision was made so quickly and with not a lot of information. I also found it odd that instead of just saying “The Church”, the whole name of the Church was spelled out every single time.
What put me off of the entire book was the verbiage that was used about female anatomy. It completely took me out of the story, and I couldn’t enjoy the spice because of it.
Overall, I don’t regret spending the time reading the story, but it wasn’t my cup of tea.

Eve and Gabriel’s story is one about passion, raw feelings, pain, confusion, but also hope.

The theme is the reason I picked this book up. The storyline is at times a bit hasty and misses some extra patience. I missed the slow burn romance, it went a bit fast and therefore I couldn’t always feel the chemistry.

The story doesn’t disappoint if you love books with a graphical and cinematic world build.

For me I would rather give this book a 3,5/5. The theme is great, world build is beautiful but I missed some special love and patience in the storyline.

This was a nice quick read! I definitely enjoyed the Fallen Angels with fated mates mix! Always a good read when the religious fanatics get their asses handed to them!!

I loved Eve, even though I too was mad she waited so long to tell Gabriel the whole truth!
I think I was hoping more for Silence to end up coming to live with Eve & ending up with one of his Sedge, not Lilith...I still need Eve to punch her!

Definitely glad I chose this one, it was great to read in between those chunkers, I highly recommend this book!

I need book 2 now!!

Seraph’s Tears gave me Beauty and the Beast vibes, but without the emotional connection that makes that trope work. The gothic setup had potential, but the characters never fully drew me in, and the romance didn’t have enough buildup to feel believable.

And the spicy scenes were… very cringy, which pulled me out of the story even more.

Overall, an interesting premise that just didn’t land strongly enough for me.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought the premise was unique and I loved the overall vibe of the book. The MMC was yummy and I loved how he took care of the FMC.

I also loved that the reader finds out why the book is titled the way it is. It all came together in the end.

The book ends as if to set up for the next book. I cannot wait to find out more!

Tropes:
╰⪼ Angel x Human
╰⪼ Slow Burn
╰⪼ Forbidden Romance

This book reminded me of The Four Horsemen series — definitely more romance with fantasy elements rather than true romantasy. The tension and slow burn were fun (sensitive wings... yes, please), but the story never reached its full potential. It needed either more angst, more romance, or more spice to really land. The worldbuilding felt underused, especially with so little interaction between angels and not enough detail about the Fall. A decent read, just a bit too surface-level for what it could have been.

Thank you NerdFam for this ARC!

I liked the concept but its not grabbing my attention. Additionally, I didn't realize from the description that this would be historically set and I was looking for something more modern. Because of the time frame, which is never really said but can be interpreted from the descriptions, the writing felt a bit stiff and formal.

Romantic and fascinating!

I enjoyed the novel and creative world that the author puts together here. Right off the bat, the world was a little confusing though. It seemed to mimic ours but I couldn't tell the right time frame and the different gods threw me off. It becomes clear eventually and it's rather fascinating, but I think the similarities with our world (when it is not our world) were what confused me.

The story and prose were a bit simplistic, but honestly well done. I liked the characters, especially Castiel, and I'm looking forward to his book and finding out what happens next!

Seraphs Tears by Anna Evernight is a sweet, celestial read that is bound to keep you on edge with its slightly dangerous and gothic vibes. Serpahs Tears is a romantasy about a fallen angel, his human fated mate and a gothic mansion on windswept moors.

I enjoyed meeting the main characters in this book and I believe they were both well developed in their own ways with their own storyline.
Eve is kind and a ray of sunshine, she was sent to complete her mission as a spy for her cult that she was desperately trying to escape. Gabriel on the other hand was grumpy and brooding, desperately trying to find a way back home for his sedge. The romance in this book does unfold quite fast, but I believe it fits it well taking in everyone’s history. Gabriel, a Seraph trapped on earth for 50 years, finally finds his mate and now will do anything for her, even if it means not returning home. Eve, forced to marry the reverend and had been force fed the expectations of women in the eyes of the church, finally meets a man that respects her.

I enjoyed the world building in Serpahs Tears, learning about the different in worlds and society and learning about the Seraphs. I honestly hope we learn more about Gabriel’s world and after learning about the Seraph and their weaknesses a part of me wonders what lies in the next books and how that is used against them. I look forward to the next books in this series and I hope we see Lilith grow out of the expectations that were forced down her throat and look forward to seeing her character growth.

In saying all this, there was a couple things I disliked. The use of the word “cunny” was a bit off putting, I’m not to sure if it was used for a particular reason such as the either that is the word used by seraph or maybe where Eve is from, but it put me off in the spicy scenes. Secondly, Gabriel has spent 50 years shaming himself, the leader of his sedge, for not being able to return his team home and has fought so hard to find some way to return. I feel like there was a massive whiplash from him wanting to return home to all of a sudden dropping everything to stay on earth with Eve. I understand that she is his mate and he almost lost her, but I feel like there should have been more of a mental crisis on his side between leading his sedge home and staying with Eve.

Overall, I throughly enjoyed this read. If you love Beauty and the Beast energy with a celestial twist, check out Seraphs Tears by Anna Evernight. Seraphs tears is a quiet and emotional gem of a book that will leave you yearning for more.

Thank you Anna Evernight and The Nerd Fam for allowing me this e-arc of Seraphs Tears. All thoughts and reviews are of my own.

Employed as a housekeeper for a secretive master isolated on the moors, Eve takes the chance to construct her own future. Growing up amongst an oppressive cult has her grasping at the opportunity of freedom, but what she believes to be demonic is possibly the blessing she never knew she needed.

Initially, I was hooked in by the breathtaking quality of this book. Beautifully atmospheric, featuring the moors provides Seraph's Tears the ability to hover between juxtaposing ideas: beauty and cruelty, freedom and hardship, chance and fear. So much was offered in the setting, and the premise was unique and compelled me to read this book. It started strong escape, gothic vides, mysterious employer, fallen angels, a divine mission.

It was all so good, it just sadly didn't deliver. The structure of the plot seemed flustered. It made sure all the plot points were delivered, but their execution was hurried, and a times repetitive. Another aspect that threw me was the language that seemed unsuited to the time period, and some wording was just strange - mainly in intimate scenes.

I can not fault the world-building it's vividly detailed and gorgeously written. I just wish other eleme of the novel had been explored in the same way, particularly the romance as it was a prominent feature.

The insight into both Eve's and Gabriel's perspectives made the history of the world stand out. From the fall of the seraphs to Eve's questioning the community she was brought up in. It all enhanced the world and characters. There were some vulnerable moments that were so sweet to read but got slightly lost amongst the fast pace. And I loved the fact that so much was recent history in the book, rather than there being centuries between all the events.

I think my overall wish is for more to be explored and just a bit more refined for the time period of the novel. Apart for feeling rushed, I did enjoy the story and it's haunting harsh but beautiful atmosphere.

Favourite Quotes:

But, then, some monsters were the most beautiful creatures. Which was he?

Sometimes people’s religious fervor got the better of them, and they became dangerous. A handful of humans would never take down one seraph. But a mob gripped in a religious frenzy? I didn’t want to find out.

“My church doesn’t approve of magic. It doesn’t exist anymore anyway.”
I scoffed. “Doesn’t approve of magic? That’s like saying someone doesn’t approve of the wind.”

“You,” I whispered, “are unlike anything or anyone I’ve ever met or ever will meet. If I had to Fall, I’m glad I met you for it.”

OMG! We’re off to a great start.

Honestly, I was immediately intrigued by the premise of this book, and it didn’t disappoint. It brought me right back to my 13-year-old self, obsessed with angel–mortal love stories, but this one had such a fresh and unique twist that I truly appreciated. I’ve never read a book in this genre that also explored cult oppression alongside the idea of redemption, and that combination made it stand out.

The writing is lyrical and evocative, and while it sometimes leans into repetition (especially when describing emotions or settings), it’s incredibly easy to get immersed in. I almost binge-read it in one sitting (life got in the way, ugh), but every time I picked it back up, I was immediately drawn in again. I especially loved the recurring imagery of feathers: those descriptions added a beautiful, tactile layer that made the narration and characters feel even more vivid.

The cult element was one of my favourite aspects, though I wish it had been developed further. A bit more detail on the worldbuilding and the cult’s inner workings could have made the story even more realistic and helped explain some character decisions. Still, I appreciated how the theme of religious indoctrination gave the book more depth, even if the angelic lore and cult structure felt slightly underexplored. At the end of the day, this is a romantasy, not a pure fantasy, so the love story is the focal point... and it delivers!!

The main characters are definitely the strength of the book. Eve and Gabriel felt real, with strong emotional arcs that carried the story. I do wish the secondary characters had been given more space, but hopefully that’s something we’ll see in the next instalments. I’m not usually a fan of the fated mates trope, yet here it worked surprisingly well: the chemistry between the FMC and MMC was intense and believable, even if it developed quickly, and I wish it had taken more time to get the reader fully invested.

The only reason I’m not giving this five stars is the pacing. The story is engaging and easy to read, but the middle section falters a bit, with some repetition that slows things down. At the same time, in some parts it feels kinda rushed, especially towards the end. That being said, my intrigue never wavered: the mystery of Gabriel’s fall and Eve’s choices kept me invested throughout.

As the first book in a series, Seraph’s Tears lays intriguing groundwork, and I’m eager to see how the sequel expands the world and deepens the lore. Overall, I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy romance-heavy fantasy with a gothic atmosphere and emotional depth (but also love some good SPICE 🌶️ !!), especially those looking for a fresh twist on the angelic theme.

I received an advance review copy of "Seraph's Tears" and I am giving it 4 stars.

I loved the concept of this story from the very moment I read the summary, and it did not disappoint. A main character trying to escape a coercive and manipulative environment. Fallen angels. Falling in love with someone you thought was out of your league. Fated mates. A beautiful combo of somewhat clichés that I think created a satisfying potion that I thoroughly enjoyed drinking.

This book is part of a series. There are some gaps in the plot that I believe will slowly be clarified as you read through the rest of the books. But the focus of this book is the romance and the inner battles of the characters. As such, the missing information did not negatively affect my reading experience or my comprehension of the storyline. However, if you are the kind of reader who tends to nitpick the "whys" and "hows ", this book might create more questions than answers.

The sexual tension is real! As they say, "you can cut it with a knife". It was nerve-wracking to experience the way it built and almost popped. And finally, when it did. BUT! This is what kind of ruined the spice for me (that I ended up skimming through most of the scene) -- the main character in all his gorgeous, breathtaking glory, using the word "cunny". Although I haven't seen this word used in books before, I know that it's an archaic vulgar term, which probably supports the age of the main character. But it just did not feel right for me. It didn't match the vibe the scene and basically the entire book created.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the rest of it. The villains are not powerful people who have magic or spells or abilities to smite those who oppose them. No. The villains are closer to real people than fictional characters. People who think women are lesser than their counterparts and utilise other people's desperation and faith to manipulate them and steal their autonomy and critical thinking. Real people that we encounter in our everyday lives. That makes it scarier.

I recommend this book to those who are looking for a well-paced romantasy with magical world building and dark, moody atmosphere.

Thank you to the author for an e-arc of this book!

A fallen angel and a girl looking to escape her cultist group.

50 years ago, Gabriel and his group fell through a rip in the world, and haven’t been able to get back home since. On the day they fell through their world to here, there were those who saw them fall and equated them to gods of their own to worship.

Fast forward, Eve has grown up a part of a cultist church looking to add Gabriel as one to worship. They’ve been searching for him for years. When an ad advertises for a housekeeper to a reclusive man in a large manor in the middle of nowhere, Eve is tasked with taking up the job and reporting back if this man is indeed the one they have been looking for. Eve has never had her freedom. Woman are expected to be seen (when told to) but not heard. She’s betrothed to their leader who she despises and all she seeks is to run away and live her own life.

Upon arrival, she sees right away Gabriel is exactly who the church has been looking for, but can tell he’s not all the church thinks he is. He’s not a god, but a seraph looking for his way home for himself and his friends, who have scattered over the decades. Gabriel though is taken with Eve right away and can’t seem to stay away from her. He can’t figure out what it is that draws him to her. With the help of a few friends, he tries to learn more and more about his new mortal housekeeper and finds that maybe he can start to learn to love this new world they crashed into.

This book is a stand alone series. With books 2&3 going to follow other couples from the series. I’m hoping the next couple books will dive even further into the world and their journey to find a portal back home.

For a shorter book, approximately 250 pages, we get good spice 🌶️ without it feeling like that’s all it is. Gabriel and Eve have connection right away, even if the story is slow burn.

I’m honestly so intrigued by the next 2 couple’s books because I think it’s going to be such a fun read!

4 stars — a fallen seraph and a cult escapee.

tropes
Fated mates
Beauty and the Beast-esque
Gothic elements
Grumpy (closed-off) x Sunshine (just more upbeat, not really sunshine)
Forced proximity
He falls first

Eve is undercover as a spy for her cult, and the housekeeper of the fallen seraph Gabriel. After developing their relationship, Eve delays each report to her cult in an attempt to help the seraph and escape from the cult. As both of them pine and learn about each other, the connection and deepens, which escalates to a climatic confrontation with Eve’s cult.

Eve was in quite a difficult place, and considering her position most of her decisions were wise and logical. She says she has to be careful, then she's hurt one second and spilling her secrets the next. Gabriel was a love-hate character for me, as there are profound moments when he is more than a man yearning (for Eve and for his return to the skies), his character exploring guilt, shame, and the loss of honor/pride. Yet he watches her with a lustful gaze for more than half the book, every few pages talking about how perfect her breasts were or how he imagined her in his sheets. He was disgustingly lustful; e.g. they were having a genuine heart-to-heart conversation and he’s thinking about sex— I was so disappointed. I did love the nickname 'Starlight' that he gave her, but sometimes he'd refer to her as 'my fierce human' and it felt more like owning posession of a dog or a lab subject than a lover.

The romance didn't progress too naturally, but the tension all but made up for it. The want in Gabriel's pov, and his poetic words in moments of tenderness was quite moving. When he was begging Eve it felt so raw and vulnerable in a way.

The world building was not overly done yet painted a clear image of the world, especially the strict social ladder of the angels were thought out and mapped. In addition, this book talks about a number of topics. Namely, the controlling and patriarchial cult where women were seen as lesser (and how this mindset had negatively influenced Eve's outlook), and how the faith of religion can turn devotion into obsession.
It’s a shame it ended up with Gabriel killing the men after all that climatic build up, I was hoping for a creative resolution instead of one I suspected at the beginning of the book. However, I did enjoy the buildup of emotions, except for how it would stay pent up until all of a sudden everything is revealed. Personally I disliked certain words themselves, e.g. titles (“church of the love of his divine saints” + “herald of the god of death and beyond”), continents (Afrik), and the usage of the word “cunny”. There were small, infrequent punctuation mistakes, but overall was a smooth read.

With an engaging voice and well-paced scenes, I would recommend this if you want a book that explores a variety of topics (cults, religion, hierarchies) with a slowburn adult romance.

Fallen angel/Seraphim X trapped cult member

Eve is forced by her cult leader to take up a job as a house keeper for who they believe is “The herald of death”, they want to worship him. Eve sees this as a way to try and bide her time to escape the cult and be free.

Gabriel is a reclusive seraphim who has given up on ever finding a way back home after being trapped on earth for the past 50 years. When he meets Eve he starts to feel hope that even if he doesn’t return home, he can turn his manor into a safe haven for those who fell with him.

Some tropes/scenes that stand out;
-Angel X human
-grumpy X sunshine
-he rescues her from a storm, then uses his body heat to keep her warm 👀
-he falls first and hard
-he takes her flying
-he lets her eat with him
-sends his friend to source food and clothing for her

I really liked the pace of the story, Eve being in denial about her growing feelings, Gabriel slowly coming out of his shell. I feel like if this gave me the sense that as Gabriel became lighter and looking forward to his future, the manor became brighter. I feel like Eve was smarter than she acted sometimes. Growing up in a cult and being able to have her own thoughts and questioning the leaders practices seems like someone with an intelligent mind would do. I felt like she constantly belittled herself in how she described her looks while Gabriel was clearly very interested in her. Her constant need to lie and deceive angered me because she had so many opportunities to even bend the truth. Instead she was like “eh I only care about myself getting free” so I felt Gabriel getting angry and flying off was valid but then he caved so easily 🙄 (both love and hate that cause he deserved better)
“Cunny” is now up there with names I don’t like used in place of Vagina but it’s not overly used thankfully 😅 I loved that while they sort of get their happy ending, I don’t believe that’s the last we’ll see of them as we head into Castiel’s story.

I was gifted an eArc copy of this book by the Nerdfam for my honest review- thank you Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC.

If you’re craving a romantasy that leans into its tropes with conviction, Seraph’s Tears delivers in all the right ways.

First off — Eve is one of those characters you root for immediately: she’s been trapped in a cult her whole life and desperate for any chance at freedom. When she becomes a housekeeper for the reclusive angel Gabriel, it feels like her ticket out — but of course, it’s never that simple.

This book blends several of my favorite tropes:

* Fated mates that feel inevitable

* Grumpy (Gabriel) x Sunshine (Eve) vibes

* Beauty & the Beast echoes in a gothic manor

* Forced proximity with emotional payoff

*He unironically falls first (and it’s so well done)

One scene that really stuck with me and shows exactly why these tropes work here: there’s this moment when Eve’s trying to assert her independence — literally having fought her way into this job to escape her cult — and Gabriel instinctively does what he does best: protect her. Not in a domineering way, but in that slow-burn way where you can feel his walls cracking just a little. Watching Eve gently push back, not because she doesn’t want him, but because she wants herself, was such a satisfying twist on the usual dynamic.

The emotional tension here is lush without feeling rushed. Gabriel’s internal conflict — duty versus desire — intersects beautifully with Eve’s journey from isolation toward connection. Their chemistry grows in a way that feels earned even if the romance hits hard relatively early on.

Worldbuilding is gothic and atmospheric — windswept moors, shadowed halls, that old-manor energy that gives you chills even in moments that are warm — and it makes the emotional beats land harder.

If you love:

* fall for your fated mate vibes

* character growth that actually matters

* emotional depth under the surface heat

* supernatural romance with a broody MMC

…Seraph’s Tears is absolutely worth picking up.

Seraph's Tears by Anna Evernight is a gothic celestial romantasy about fated mates.

Seraph’s tears follow Eve and Gabriel. Eve is trapped in a cult bound by lies and control. To gain her freedom, Eve takes a job as a housekeeper for a mythical creature. Gabriel and his warriors fell from the sky and fell straight into the human world. While trying to search for a way home, Gabriel finds hope in the human girl that comes to work for him.

Overall, I felt that this book was a pretty interesting concept. I love the whole concept of fallen angels/seraphim, it is just so interesting to me. I also liked Eve’s story of wanting to be free of her cult and the idea that in order to gain her freedom she has to offer the creature up that she’s falling for. Seeing a fallen Angel and a human struggle with their past and trying to work together to seek their own haven made for an interesting storyline. I feel like the connection between our two MCs was quick and sweet but I do wish we got to see just a bit more of it!

The author did a great job with the world-building. The magical world brought the gothic vibes!

Seeing as this is the first book in the series, I think it has good potential to continue to get better as we go. I think with change in the pacing this series could be great. I’m curious to see how this series continues in the second book!

I was able to read an advance copy prior to release from the Nerd Fam and the author Anna Evernight. Thank you so much!

🔥 Quick Synopsis

Eve is desperate to escape the cult that’s controlled her entire life, so she takes a job as a housekeeper for Gabriel—a mythical, brooding recluse with secrets of his own.
She wants freedom. He wants purpose. Neither expects fate to bind them together.

❤️ What I Loved

• Eve and Gabriel’s dynamic—soft human girl + wounded mythical creature trying to feel alive again
• The gothic, atmospheric vibes (creaky halls, shadows, mist… all of it 👌)
• The premise + the cover instantly hooked me

💔 What I Didn’t Love

• The pacing felt rushed, like we were skipping steps in both the plot and relationship
• The intimate moments didn’t fully land—felt disconnected and not earned
• The “insta-love” reveal makes sense later… but didn’t help the early scenes
• Some of the dialogue/word choices during spicy moments had me screaming (and not in the fun way)

📎 Memorable Notes

• Strong gothic setting
• Interesting cult backstory
• Mythical creature twist had promise

🎭 Emotional Impact

Notes: Felt more “this could’ve been great” than fully delivered.

🏰 Worldbuilding

• Cult escape storyline
• Mythical creature lore hinted at but rushed
• Wanted more depth and slow-burn tension to match the gothic setup

💬 Romance Notes

• Definitely insta-love
• Spice scenes felt off because the emotional connection didn’t have time to grow
• Loved the concept of their bond but not the execution

🌶 Spice Level

🌶🌶 (but not in a way that worked for me)

⭐ Ratings

Plot: 3/5
Characters: 3/5
Romance: 2/5
Spice: 1/5
Overall: 2.5/5

✍️ Final Thoughts

The idea and atmosphere drew me in, and I loved Eve and Gabriel together in theory. But the rushed pacing and awkward intimacy pulled me out of the story. I can totally see this working for readers who love quick insta-love gothic romances… but it wasn’t fully for me.

Thank you to the publisher for the ARC! 💛

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

If you read and liked Nalini Singhs "Guild Hunter" series, you will LOVE this book. The few critiques I have were not enough to bring it down from a 5.

Star break down:

Characters: 5/5 Both MC's were well developed, each having a strong story line. Two sentient beings, from two different worlds. The same, but not. I liked the irony that he's an Angel, and she's human, he's not a religious deity but she's the one who brings the religious aspect to the story.

World: 4/5 Where he was from, and the "cult world" she was from were described and created well. The only thing I am sorta confused on, is I went in thinking earth, as in a Urban fantasy. Though earth in this seems to be a little different than actual earth as we know it. Like at one point Gabriel said our world didn't have mountains. Did he mean at all, or where they crash landed?

Plot: It's an excellent start to a new series. It laid the ground work with how the Angels got there, her going from, "I'm biding my time", to "I don't want to go" One brings out the personality of the other.

Romance: 4/5 It's a slow sweet build.

Smut level: 3/5 (if even) great for those who like a little spice, but nothing risque.

Ending: 5/5 Great set up for the next book. Everything solved between the 2 MC's and a slow intro into the next one.

Cover Art: Absolutely Gorgeous! Many people believe you should never judge a book by it's cover, and that's true, but having a cover that grabs a persons attention helps quite a bit. I'm a visual person, and if you put very plain or no cover art at all on a book, 8 out of 10 times, I will by pass it by and not think twice about it. Give me great cover art, I am at the very least going to read the blurb.

If you like your fantasy served with a dash of gothic mood and a suspiciously attractive celestial being, Seraph’s Tears is ready to sweep you into its shadowy mansion and never return the keys. Anna Evernight opens her new series with an atmosphere so thick you could bottle it—creaking floors, cold drafts, and a sense that the walls are definitely listening.
At the center of it all is Eve, a woman clawing her way out of a suffocating cult where spiritual “guidance” looks suspiciously like psychological dominance. Becoming the housekeeper to a man who is very much not a man seems her onkly escape route. The aboventioned man not a mane, Gabriel: a fallen seraph with millennia of baggage and cheekbones sharp enough to start a small revolution. Their alternating perspectives give the story a delicious emotional depth—her fear and grit, his duty and longing—braiding together into something quietly powerful.
The secondary cast flits around the edges like soft background echoes, clearly saving their dramatic flair for future books. And honestly, I don’t mind. The focus stays firmly where it should: on Eve’s fight for freedom and Gabriel’s quest to send heaven’s exiles home. Evernight’s take on angelic powers feels fresh, and her depiction of cult manipulation is unsettling in all the right ways.
Sure, seasoned fantasy addicts might see a few twists coming, but when the journey is this, who cares? The final pages land with a beautifully haunting thud—just enough to make you curse the calendar while waiting for the sequel, hopefully soon.
In short: dark, dreamy, emotionally rich, and just mysterious enough to keep you perched on the edge of your seat. A promising beginning… and yes, I’m already sharpening my wings for book two.
