Homer's Iliad centers on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles during the last year of the Trojan War. The Odyssey chronicles the ten-year journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, back to his home after the fall of Troy. The poems are in Homeric Greek, also known as Epic Greek, a literary language which shows a mixture of features of the Ionic and Aeolic dialects from different centuries; the predominant influence is Eastern Ionic. Most researchers believe that the poems were originally transmitted orally. Despite being predominantly known for its tragic and serious themes, the Homeric poems also contain instances of comedy and laughter.
Homer's epic poems shaped aspects of ancient Greek culture and education, fostering ideals of heroism, glory, and honor. To Plato, Homer was simply the one who "has taught Greece" (τὴν Ἑλλάδα πεπαίδευκεν). In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Virgil refers to Homer as "Poet sovereign", king of all poets; in the preface to his translation of the Iliad, Alexander Pope acknowledges that Homer has always been considered the "greatest of poets". From antiquity to the present day, Homeric epics have inspired many famous works of literature, music, art, and film.
The question of by whom, when, where and under what circumstances the Iliad and Odyssey were composed continues to be debated. Scholars remain divided as to whether the two works are the product of a single author. It is thought that the poems were composed at some point around the late eighth or early seventh century BC. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity; the most widespread account was that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. General Thoughts: As far as this specific edition, I think it was well done - translated well (although I wouldn’t know if accurately as I don’t know how to read the originals in their original languages.) – it felt like it captured the spirit of the pieces and characters. I liked including the Achilleid at the beginning to give readers and even more in-depth view of Achilles’ character development. I loved the illustrations - I actually wanted more.
Characters: 5/5 - These are all classic characters now who has been written many times, reimagined and inspired a lot of today’s modern fictional characters. I’d been several years (more like 15+) since I read this for the first time in college, so long that it felt like a first read for me and so it was really exciting seeing how these characters developed, and came to life on the page.
Atmosphere/Setting: 5/5 - The atmosphere and setting felt absolutely on point throughout this whole read.
Writing Style: 2/5 - While it was groundbreaking for its time, the writing style for me was hard to read without an audiobook reading it outloud. Once I started the audiobook, it was easier to digest - although the audiobook I had was a completely different translation, so the words didn’t match up hardly. So it was a light immersion read.
Plot: 5/5 - That ending was unexpected - I love how the characters' reactions made it feel even more unexpected. No one knew that would happen and that’s one of the reasons why the Iliad is an endearing classic, still often used to teach writing to hopeful writers.
Intrigue: 3/5 - While I was interested, my intrigue had a hard time staying strong, even with the audiobook. So this is a hard one for me to rank.
Logic: 5/5 - Everything made 100% sense.
Enjoyment: 4/5 - I truly enjoyed this glimpse to the past - history and writing.
Audiobook Narrator: 5/5 - Dan Stevens did an absolutely fantastic job! His voice narration kept me interested at times when sometimes the words didn’t so much.
