The Almond Garden of Kabul

Rate this book
The Almond Garden of Kabul is a tale of courage, resistance and survival that lingers beyond the final page. It is about a group of women prisoners who risk everything to expose a network of abuse and corruption that reaches the highest levels of power in Afghanistan. Unlike many novels set in Afghanistan, which often focus on war, foreign intervention and women as passive victims, The Almond Garden of Kabul brings to light untold stories from a hidden world, where survival is a battle of wits, resilience and defiance. Rather than centring on external conflicts, it exposes systemic corruption, state-sponsored abuse, and the high-stakes risks of uncovering the truth from within

This book, written by the wonderful Mandana Hendessi, is a captivating, heartbreaking story that also shows the beauty of womanhood in the harshest conditions.

Taking place in a womens prison in kabul, the story follows the inmates after a tragic incident, were an inmate set herself on fire. Determined to uncover what the reason for the self burning was, two, very different inmates, Sultan, the prison chief, and Setara the prisons scribe, get together.

As the story follows their investigations, we learn more about the tragic backgrounds of the inmates. Why they were arrested? For western standards no reasons to be imprisoned.

This read was very eye opening to me. Learning more about the various struggles women have to face in Afghanistan and the unjust system they have to face each day.

I highly recommend this book!

A beautifully written book about a group of unforgettable female prisoners of Badam Bagh who’ve been wronged in so many ways. But instead of accepting their fate, these women choose to fight back against the system that subdues them with bravery and power.

Though the book is fiction, it sheds light on a tragic reality that still lurks in the shadows, and on corruption that delves so deep it is hard to even imagine in its totality. Regardless, the story goes a long way to remind us wherever there is injustice, there is dissent, and there are times the dissenters are just driven enough to secure a much needed victory.

A difficult book to read as it highlights the oppression and terrific abuse of women in Afghanistan. But it is also a story of resistance, sisterhood, support and courage. Worth reading to develop a deeper understanding of the world for Afghan women.
