When desperate choices mean the difference between life and death.
Inspired by true events, Bright One tells the story of Jetti Finkelthal, Lisajoy Sachs' great-grandmother. In Czernowitz, Romania, this young Jewish mother is forced to face impossible choices as the world begins to collapse around her. As antisemitism tightens its grip and war edges ever closer, Jetti holds fast to her daughter, Berta, with the fragile belief that love and courage might still carve a way through the darkness.
Heartened by her grandmother Berta's letters, photographs, and family oral histories, Sachs revives a story both intimate and universal-stitched with the fabric of daily life, the pull of memory, and the quiet heroism of women who refused to yield to despair. Told with vivid, sensory detail, the novel unfolds as if you are walking beside the characters, witnessing what they see and sharing what they feel.
Through Jetti's resilience and sacrifices, Bright One reveals the enduring strength of family ties and the shadow of trauma that lingers across generations. It is a story of survival, of loss, and of the unbreakable connection between mother and child.
For readers captivated by historical fiction that lingers long after the final page, Bright One offers a profoundly human portrait of love tested by history's darkest hours.
BOOK ONE of the BRIGHT ONE SERIES
"A touching tale not to be missed for fans of The Child Who Lived by Ellie Midwood and Sophie's Choice by Wiliam Styron." -- HFC Reviews
Author Lisajoy Sachs inherited a box of letters, journals and other correspondence from her grandma. With this information and a lot of research, she tells the story of her family's history. I was so thankful she asked me to read this book and granted me access to an advanced copy!
Sachs writing style captivated me! Although the book was a bit slow at first, I was pulled into the story and couldn't put it down. The book is set in Romania and is full of history from the time period around WWI and the years after. The difficult decisions made by Jetti for her daughter were heartbreaking.
There were several impactful lines that relate so much to today. This is the first book of a series. The ending leaves me wanting to read book 2!
"We study history not just to honor those who came before us but to learn to see the signs...so we may know when it's time to stand up, before it's too late."
Absolutely a good read. I'm honoured to have been a giveaway winner 🏆😁 for this book. Honestly, I don't usually read books like this, but in my opinion, I genuinely couldn't put it down.
This was a very special read for me knowing it's based on the author's family history. Bright One is a story about a mother who's resilience and bravery, despite all the hardships she and her family has endured, remained steady and loving because of her love for her child. This was so vividly written that while reading, it felt like I was there experiencing the events and the emotions the characters were feeling. This story not only made me shed a lot of tears but also touched my heart for its raw portrayal of struggles as they slowly overcome the hardships and yet, another one starts to unfold and their powerful bond is being threatened again. What a beautiful story that you can tell that it was written with so much love and appreciation and I'm so honored to be chosen as one of the firsts to experience such a powerful and meaningful art. I can't wait to read more!
Bright One is a beautiful story that I had the pleasure of reading as an ARC. It is a story of loss, grief, love, and sacrifice. Based on Lisajoy's family history, this compelling story allows us to journey through time as Jetti and her daughter (Berta) learn how cruel life is and try to make the right decision, no matter how hard it may be. I love the writing and it transported me to a time where life wasn't easy, as it never tends to be. A mother's love is a powerful thing and this story is absolutely heartbreaking. Learning to live a life through loss is the core of this book and I can't wait to see what comes next for Berta.
As someone who has made amazing discoveries during genealogical research for my own family, I can appreciate the immensity of the task that the author undertook in weaving tidbits of factual knowledge and isolated memories into her debut novel Bright One.
While no doubt many liberties were taken, and this is technically historical fiction, as I read, I couldn't help wondering what parts were real and where imagination took over.
Based on true events that her ancestors lived through, the author has chosen post WW1 Romania as the setting for the first book in this series. The story takes form slowly, giving enough time to introduce all of the characters before the pace quickens throughout the second half of the book with WW2 looming in the distance. The ending will leave you wanting to find out what comes next for this family.
Many thanks to the author for including me in her ARC team.
“But why, Uncle Yosef? Why do they hate us?”…“Because fear is powerful…Fear can paralyze people, keep them from thinking clearly… from acting justly…And people—people are easy to convince when they’re afraid.”
Bright One is a historical fiction novel that is based on real events of @lisajoysachsauthor great-grandmother Jetti, and grandmother, Berta, between WWI and leading up to WWII. From the beginning, I was captivated by the story and the characters. However, I found the first 25% of the writing to be repetitive and long-winded, which made it hard for me to get into. I feel like once I got past that, the author found her groove and the story-telling was much smoother and beautiful. I became truly engaged with this family and their fates. Finishing left me wanting so much more and so excited to know there will be another book coming (possibly 4 total).
One of hardest parts of reading this book, for me, a Jewish woman, living in a time where antisemitism is the worst we have seen in my lifetime, was seeing what it could lead to as it has done in our history. The fact that we haven’t learned from it could mean we are doomed to repeat it, which is a very scary thought and one I try to avoid these days. So reading this was tough at times. Yet, I also see the resilience and strength displayed throughout the novel and that gives me hope that our people will continue to rise above and overcome.
Thank you Lisajoy for sharing the gift of your grandmother with us and allowing me to be an early reader. Best of luck with this debut and I can’t wait to read Golden Flight!
Bright One is not just a story of survival during history’s darkest chapters—it is a tribute to the sacrifices made by the Finkelthal’s and the Jewish community of Czernowitz. Those who fought and brought aid during the battle years of WWI came back to their homes scarred physically and mentally, shaping the between wars period in ways that are not always clear. Author Lisajoy Sachs has woven together the story of her family and this period in time. She demonstrates through storytelling the feelings of relief that WWI was over, the tentative hope for prosperity and the looming wariness of seeing a world that hadn’t stitched itself back together in a way that kept leaders’ egos in check and protected the groups subject to persecution in the run up to and during WWII.
The author has woven her artist background throughout painting scenes with a full color palette. She doesn’t assume that you understand Jewish custom and heritage, instead she gently incorporates the true meaning behind the customs in a way that enhances the story. Her descriptions of the baked goods from this region will have you searching online for airline tickets. Unfortunately, that search will provide news of drone strikes in Czernowitz, which is now part of the Ukraine. Fortunately, this is just the first novel, and we can look forward to continuing the Finkelthal’s story as we walk with them through history.
Bright One is a beautifully written and emotional story that unfolds with quiet strength. The beginning starts a bit slow, but it quickly becomes clear that it’s all intentional, setting the foundation for Jetti’s journey, her motives, and the resilience that carries through the rest of the novel.
There were so many standout characters, but the relationship between Jetti and her mother, Berta, absolutely stole my heart. Their bond was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at times. I also found myself wanting to know more about Nina and Mariam, their presence added wonderful layers to the story.
This book is steeped in themes of resilience, love, and survival; how even in the darkest times, the love of family and friendship can help you persevere. One of my favorite moments was when Miriam took Jetti in and taught her to sew. It was such a gentle yet powerful scene, full of care, creativity, and hope.
Every part of this book felt purposeful. I wouldn’t change a single thing. Each piece worked together to create a meaningful, emotional story.
A quote that stayed with me: “…history isn’t something that happens behind you. It happens around you.”
I can’t wait for the next part of this story to be released in the spring. Bright One is heartfelt, honest, and deeply human, a story that lingers long after the final page.
When was the last time you read a book that stirred up intense feelings of beauty, love, joy, family, heartbreak, and recovery–all within a single story?
Bright One immerses you in a family’s legacy through rich, poetic imagery. You are given a glimpse into their lives during some of their highest and lowest moments. They approach difficult times with unwavering support for each other. Despite loss and tough decisions, they stand together. This family's strength was tested over and over, reminding us just how resilient humans can be, even at the hands of others’ cruelty.
Historical fiction is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, genres to read. History books tell us of events that occurred, but novels like this one allow us to feel what it was like to live through those moments: the unfairness, the uncertainty, the fear, and yes, even the cruelty.
I found myself hoping for things to turn out differently, because I always wish for good to triumph over evil. But life does not always give us the best. Jetta made a decision no mother should ever have to make. The modern day woman in me wanted to shout there had to be another way, yet I understood that she did not live in the world I do. LIsaJoy presented the information as gently as she could, but nonetheless I was heartbroken more than once.
Dear author, I'm not going anywhere. I will be here, waiting with bated breath for the second novel so that I may continue learning of your beautiful, resilient family. Thank you for sharing their story with us.

This story was captivating from the very beginning; not just because it’s inspired by the real-life history of the author’s family, but because it’s written with such beauty and emotional depth that you truly feel as though you’re walking alongside the Finkelthals.
The relationships between the characters were incredibly touching, and the strength of their familial bond radiated through every chapter. The story begins with Jetti and her family, then transitions to Berta and her cousins, allowing readers to watch them grow up amidst unimaginable challenges. My heart broke several times throughout this book, but witnessing the characters’ resilience and courage was both awe-inspiring and uplifting.
The novel ends on a powerful, pivotal moment that left me eager for more—I cannot wait for the next installment coming in Spring 2026. A huge thank you to Lisajoy Sachs for selecting me as a beta reader for this incredible story. I feel so honored to have experienced it early, and I can’t wait to see how it evolves from here!
“Bright One” is a hauntingly beautiful blend of history, love, and survival. Inspired by true family stories, Lisajoy Sachs weaves a generational tale that begins with Jetti Finkelthal a mother whose choices echo through time. From the opening pages, the book immerses you in the frostbitten streets of early 1900s Czernowitz, painting scenes so vivid you can almost feel the cold and hear the echoes of war in the distance. Sachs writes with a tenderness that makes every sacrifice, every moment of courage, feel deeply personal. It’s not just a war story; it’s about motherhood, faith, resilience, and the unbreakable thread that ties generations together. I loved how the novel captures the quiet heroism of women who endure and protect even when the world falls apart. If you enjoyed The Nightingale or All the Light We Cannot See, this belongs on your shelf. Heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure, Bright One is a story that stays with you long after the final page.
Thank you to the author for kindly providing me this arc!
Being a huge history person with WWII being one of my favorite time periods, I knew I was going to love this book. Getting to read a book that acts like a first hand account from the authors family, was incredible. Indescribable for me in a lot of ways. Spanning from after The Great War (WWI) to the rising tensions that set off WWII, we see the aftermath of this battle just in time for the Spanish Flu to affect the family, and the decisions that lead them forward. The characters are beautifully written and brought back to life from family journals and oral recollections. There were times I forgot this was a family history and not simply fiction (although some things are fabricated to create a novel–it’s done so well, I could hardly tell). The emotions are raw and beautiful, complex and wonderful, and the author makes you feel every last one of them. I look forward to the next few books that follow the Finkelthal family and Berta and learn more about their strength and resilience in such a harrowing time.
Historical fiction is quickly becoming a favourite genre of mine & The Bright One by Lisajoy Sachs is a perfect example of why.
Lisa takes on the powerful task of telling the story of her great grandmother & grandmother just after WWI detailing the challenges they faced such as abondment & the Spanish flu. The story is told with such grace and depth.
It is a moving tale of resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. I was completely drawn in by the characters & their journey, & found the historical detail both compelling & heartbreaking.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, with a young Jewish woman fleeing her home as WW II looms. I’m truly invested & can’t wait to see where the story goes next (I believe that will be in Spring 2026)
If you look at Lisa’s Instagram, she shares real photos of her family from that time, a stark & humble reminder that these are not just characters, but real people & real events.
In pre-World War II Czernowitz, Romania we follow the unforgettable journey of Jetti, a Jewish mother in the storm of rising antisemitism and personal sacrifice.
If you’re looking for a story that embodies resilience from the very first page to the last, this book delivers it beautifully. Jettie’s journey is far from easy, marked by loss, heartbreak, and challenges that would break most people. But what makes her story so compelling is how she refuses to let those moments define her. Instead, we watch her rise from each setback with her daughter and unshakable determination.
This story is rich with moments of profound hope and tender love, in particular with the friendships she forges.
it’s a story of healing, of learning to trust again, and of finding light even when everything around you feels dim.
Thank you Lisajoy for the ARC!!! It was a masterpiece
Thank you to the author for this ARC. Bright One is a sweeping, emotional story set against the backdrop of WWI with the shadow of WWII already looming. The novel gives us an intimate look into the Jewish community at a time when tradition, survival, and sacrifice were in constant tension. Themes of arranged marriage, faith, and family duty run through the narrative, all while the characters face choices that will define not only their own lives but the generations to come.
I was fully invested in the journey—especially in how a mother’s sacrifice and a daughter’s fate were intertwined. The story ends on a cliffhanger, leaving me eager for the next installment in this new series.
Bright One by LisaJoy Sachs is a heartbreaking and deeply affecting story of resilience, sacrifice, and survival. Set in post-WWI Romania during the rise of antisemitism, it follows Jetti and her daughter Berta as they navigate an increasingly dangerous world.
This novel is based on true events from the author’s own family history, with fictional elements woven in seamlessly. At its heart, it's about the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter, and the unimaginable choices a mother must make to protect her child.
Sachs does a beautiful job honoring her family’s story, creating characters that stay with you long after the final page. A powerful and emotional read that reminds us of the strength found in love and resilience during history’s darkest moments.
If you love: 💜 historical fiction 💜 based on a true story 💜 resilient FMC 💜 mother/daughter bond 💜 strong family ties
I love that the book originated from the author's family's personal history. The challenge that I had was that I didn't really connect to the characters. I found their stories interesting but didn't feel emotionally invested in the outcome of their stories.
Bright One begins with the Finkelthal family and moves right into the Great War. The book centers around the impact from the war and then leading up to the "Romanianization" in Czernowitz after the war. The family, once a vibrant cornerstone of Jewish culture and business, was reduced to a handful that had to make desperate choices when it came to survival.
The book ends, not necessarily on a cliffhanger, but on the precipice of a major transitional point of history, and I'm intrigued to learn what happens to the Finkelthal family.
Book two, Golden Flight, is expected in Spring 2026.
5 ⭐️ Historical fiction Mother/ daughter bond Resilient FMC Grief
This was a beautifully written story. It takes place during or right after World War I. I was absolutely heartbroken for Jetti throughout the entire book. The heartbreak she h endured was gut-wrenching. It just proves how strong she was to face all of that and still rise above. Her resilience and the sacrifices she made for her daughter’s survival were admirable. I couldn’t imagine living during those times. This book pulled at all of my heartstrings. Highly recommend, especially if you love historical fiction.
A truly captivating read that pulls you in and stays with you long after the final page. Lisajoy Sachs masterfully captures the unwavering dedication and strength of a mother as she faces unimaginable hardships. Every emotion is vividly felt through the author’s careful and evocative descriptions, placing you right in the heart of each scene. It’s an inspiring and deeply moving story that lingers in both mind and heart
Bright One is a profoundly moving story that lingers long after the final page. Lisajoy Sachs brings to life the courage, love, and resilience of Jetti Finkelthal in such a vivid and intimate way that I felt I was walking beside her through history. The depth of emotion, the quiet heroism, and the intergenerational bonds make this book unforgettable. A must-read for anyone who cherishes historical fiction with heart, soul, and unyielding hope.
Bright Ones takes place in Romania at the end of World War I. The novel chronicles the life of Jetti Finkelthal, the authors' great grandmother. I was impressed by, and envy the Sachs' ability to transform letters, photos and oral history passed down through generations, into this beautifully written novel of a woman's strength, determination, resilience and hope. It truly feels like a labor of love. My only caution when reading this novel is beware... it WILL leave you wanting more.
✨ARC review ✨ Thank you to @lisajoysachsauthor for selecting me to be an ARC reviewer on her first novel.
My thoughts - captivating, immersive, educational, very enjoyable. I look forward for book 2 to rejoin the story. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟- released October 2025.
Based on the letters and personal sories of Lisajoys family, this story kept me turning the pages, eager to follow the story of Jetti a young Jewish woman, her family and daughter Berta in times after WWI, rising antisemitism and tensions of impending WWII. The authors personal investment in the characters is evident and the descriptive writing engaged me, allowing me to clearly visualise the setting and emotions.
Shining through were the feelings of despair, family love, friendship, resiliance, heartbreak, joy, hope and the toughest decision a mother can make during very difficult times for any family, but more so for one of Jewish faith.
A beautiful story based on the lives of family of the author about Jetti and her daughter Berta. the story takes place between the 2 world wars where we learn about the struggles and happy moments of daily live.
the book is split in 2 parts, the first concentrating on Jetti, the second on her daughter Berta. While I liked reading part 1 more then part 2, the book was really captivating. I which we would have had more time in the book with Miriam a wonderful lady guiding Jetti when she needs it most.
I would definitely recommend this book to people who like to read historical fiction
I found this book to be a beautifully written page turner. I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter to see what happened. The author did a wonderful job of bringing the reader into the story from the beginning and holding us there to the end. I cannot wait to read book 2.
This historical fiction book, set in Czernowitz, Romania, explores the uncertain times between two world wars through the eyes of a Jewish family. Lisajoy Sachs brings to life the story of a strong woman's determination and her family's unshakeable bond. Jetti, faced with so much loss and pain, realised that she wanted to live and that she had to carve out a future for herself. Jetti is admirably resilient and paves the way for future generations. Highly recommended. Themes of courage, resilience and family bonds explored throughout the immersive writing of Lisajoy Sachs.
'Bright One' is a deeply intimate, beautifully vivid story of strength, family and resilience.
After being deserted by her husband in the aftermath of WWI, Jetti Finkelthal finds the means to rebuild her life, raising her daughter as a single mother alongside her family. The heartbreak of the 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic, which destroys her family, and the looming threats of anti-Semitism in the years leading up to WWII, are contrasted with moments of warmth, joy, and happiness as Jetti's daughter Berta grows up alongside her cousins.
The book ends on a melancholy cliffhanger that has me eagerly looking forward to the next chapter in Berta's story. I cannot wait to read what happens next!
Drawing inspiration from real events and people, “Bright One” by Lisajoy Sachs is a profoundly emotional journey that intricately explores the life of Jetti Finkelthal. Through vivid storytelling and rich character development, the narrative brings to life Jetti’s hardships and achievements, inviting readers into her world where hope and resilience intertwine.
Throughout her tumultuous journey, Jetti grapples with harrowing themes of abandonment, the ravages of war, the strain of illness, and the heavy shadows of grief that shape her experiences and fortify her resilience. The narrative intricately delves into her struggles and triumphs, painting a vivid tableau of her emotional distress, as well as the profound impact of her tumultuous past has on her present reality. With deftness and sensitivity, Sachs masterfully captures the complexity of Jetti’s character, allowing her story to resonate deeply with readers who embark on this emotional odyssey alongside her, witnessing her relentless fight for healing and hope despite overwhelming adversity. With the arrival of her daughter, Berta, a glimmer of belonging and newfound purpose ignites within Jetti, filling her heart with a fierce resolve to prioritise her child above all else. Yet, as the world around them begins to unravel, and the shadow of violence looms ever closer, Jetti finds herself faced with an agonising decision. The pursuit of what is best for her daughter demands an unimaginable sacrifice, forcing her to confront the depths of her love and the harrowing choices that come with it. Jetti is a deeply captivating character whose journey embodies remarkable resilience in the face of life’s adversities. Her narrative unfolds with an authenticity that makes her feel strikingly real. As she grapples with the profound loss of loved ones, the emotional toll on her spirit becomes poignantly evident, illuminating the depth of her grief. Unlike one-dimensional characters who simply shake off their challenges and press on, Jetti immerses herself in her pain, feeling every moment with an intensity that reflects her inner turmoil. Her struggles resonate on a universal level, showcasing not only the impact of her trauma but also her capacity for growth and healing. Through her relatable experiences of heartache, self-discovery, and joy in motherhood, she forges a powerful connection with anyone who encounters her story. Readers find themselves emotionally invested in her journey, drawn into the intricacies of her character, and inspired by her unwavering strength to face life’s trials with vulnerability and courage.
Although Joel, Jetti’s husband, makes only a fleeting appearance in the narrative, his experiences during the war are heartbreakingly intense and deeply affecting. Now that the echoes of gunfire have faded and the conflict has drawn to a close, he is left grappling with a deep sense of loss and disconnection. With his family having embarked on a new life in the bustling streets of New York, Joel feels adrift, tethered only to Jetti—yet the bond they once shared feels frayed and distant, as if they are mere strangers fated to pass each other by. Joel is a richly developed character, his internal struggles and the emotional scars etched into his psyche vividly articulated. As he contemplates the impending reunion with Jetti, a swell of anxiety consumes him—Will her love for him remain unchanged? Can he be worthy of her devotion after the war has fundamentally altered his sense of self? The reader can sense the tumultuous emotions swirling within Joel, a storm of doubt and fear. However, his fateful decision to leave Jetti without so much as a word casts a shadow over his turmoil, rendering his actions seemingly unforgivable. This lack of communication not only deepens his isolation but also accentuates the vast chasm that the war has carved between them, leaving both characters to navigate the heavy silence of unvoiced feelings and unresolved heartache.
The book features a vibrant array of supporting characters, each adding depth to the narrative. However, the grim realities of war and the relentless grip of the Spanish flu take a heavy toll, leading to the tragic loss of many. As these characters are swept away by fate, Jetti finds herself locked in a fierce struggle, grappling with the emotional aftermath and the weight of their absence.
The narrative unfolds with a lush, evocative depth, intricately weaving together a vibrant tapestry of sensory details that beckon readers to immerse themselves in a world brimming with life and emotion. The author’s voice glides gracefully across the pages, infusing the text with a profound emotional resonance and an undeniable sense of historical authenticity. Each carefully crafted phrase paints a strikingly vivid picture, capturing the delicate beauty and intricate fragility of the Finkelthal family’s existence. Through rich imagery and expressive figurative language, the story blossoms like a cherished memory, inviting readers to bask in the warmth of familial connections and the soft, haunting whispers of the past.
The novel opens in 1917, presenting the setting of Czernowitz with vivid imagery. At the heart of this story stands a grand mansion that whispers stories of opulence and privilege. Inside, the library opens like a hidden treasure chest. This estate serves as a sanctuary of affluence and stability, contrasting sharply with the turmoil brewing just beyond its gates. As the years progress, Czernowitz, with its lively marketplace bursting with a kaleidoscope of colours and sounds, exudes an air of multicultural charm. It is a place where the laughter of children mingles with the calls of merchants peddling their wares. However, the community faces new challenges as the tendrils of anti-Semitism begin to creep into their lives. The vibrancy of Czernowitz starts to wither under a looming shadow that drapes over the landscape, filling the once-joyous streets with an unsettling fear and a palpable sense of uncertainty. The charm and warmth of this beloved city are increasingly tarnished. Although Jetti does not want to scare her child, she is acutely aware that their haven is under a silent siege, transforming their playground into a place haunted by the spectre of intolerance.
“Bright One” by Lisajoy Sachs is an incredibly moving tale that resonates deeply with the reader, leaving a lasting impression long after the final page is turned. With its evocative prose and richly drawn characters, this story captures the complexities of human emotions and relationships, ensuring that its themes echo in the minds of those who embark on this heartfelt journey into the life of Jetti Finkelthal and her family.
