The Darrian Shift

Rate this book
A hidden bond. A rising darkness. A battle no one is ready to fight.

When ancient stars whisper and mountains bleed light, a past long buried begins to stir.

As Siver Pell makes its final preparations for winter, the ice and snow herald hunters from beyond the storms, merciless and unyielding, leaving the townsfolk with an impossible stand and die, or vanish into the dark beneath their feet.

Umar, a leader with more secrets than scars, must gamble everything on a desperate escape.

Cerin, an enigma whose blades speak louder than her past, vanishes on a mission no one else would dare. And deep in the cradle of the mountain, shadows awaken, offering salvation… or something far more dangerous.

In a world of haunted silence and dying light, every heartbeat matters.

And some sacrifices aren’t just remembered.

They’re carved into stone.

Frankly, the writing is horrendous. I struggled my way through the sample on Amazon. It wasn't fun. I have regrets. Who thought this is fine and fit to get published? I'd like to have words.

Aside of that, there's a plethora of genAI-speak and genAI-isms in this "book". Admittedly, someone did their best (?) to [somewhat] disguise them. However, they didn't to a very good job. There is plenty of genAI cadence and also quite a few genAI typical word and structure choices left. Enough to stumble across quite a number of them just from the prologue to the beginning of chapter 3 (that's as far as the free sample on TheZon - and my patience for this kind of "writing" - goes).

Alternatively, genAI has been used to "edit" this book. Safe to say, if that's the case, this wasn't a good idea. Not sure if it made it worse, but it most certainly didn't make it any better.

Also, can some editor, somewhen, please tell the author (?) that. Sentences. Like this. Are. A stylistic. Element. And are supposed. To Be. Used. Sparingly. For emphasis. And with. Intent. Thank you very much in advance!

In the, highly unlikely, event that a human wrote this sad piece of drivel: Please, for the love of the libraries and the sanity of your readers, get a couple of skilled alpha- and beta-readers and an editor who knows what they are doing.

This was a pain in the neck to read for just three and a bit chapters.

Nobody wants to read 300 pages of this.

Tense and rapid this is a brilliant book which I finished in a couple of days.

The storyline rarely lets up after the first few chapters. We meet plenty of characters who rarely feel one dimensional.

In just 300 pages the world grows and expands as characters are tested to the limit. New concepts are introduced carefully, both avoiding overload but also making you want to know more about this world.

If there’s one critique, some parts are resolved a little too quickly, but that’s being picky.

Will be picking up the sequel as soon as possible!

This book was a really good read. It really grabs you attention in the very beginning then slows down and but as it sets up the rest of the storyline. I would recommend giving this one a read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed the setting of the book, it's a book with extreme winter weather in a more mideval setting. There is much worldbuilding in this 300 page book, but it never is too much exposition. The story is more plot centered, but the characters never fall flat. The pacing keeps you engaged, as soon as you have read the first few chapters you are sweaped up.

The book was a bit of a slow start, feeling more like a prologue than the main story. Once it got going I read the last half of the book in a couple of days. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
