The final installment in Kel Bruem’s UNUSUALITIES monster romance series arrives with wedding bells.
Kelly Nerida’s ready to sink her siren talons into her newest business venture—weddings. And what better place to launch than her mershark best friend’s upcoming nuptials? But when several hundred extended leprechaun and mershark relatives descend on Boston with no notice, the winged woman is left scrambling to pivot her budding coordinator career to support a wedding and an alliance between unusualities–the paranormal and magical beings of Boston and beyond.
Her to-do list rapidly fills with entertaining royalty, pleading with DJs, and using her alluring siren power to find a last-minute venue. Thank god for Pete, a supportive troll with a lengthy contact list. If only Kelly could squash her growing attraction to him. Since when did a siren need the attention of a troll?
Pete Landry has loved Kelly since they met almost two years ago. Too bad his long life as a troll taught him beautiful women won’t look at him twice. Thank the gods above and below for their close friendship—a connection Pete treasures. But after an eternity suppressing his feelings, he notices that Kelly’s looks are lingering, expression soft yet heated. Now he must risk rejection to hitch himself to hope itself when the woman he loves refuses to be tied down.

I didn’t realize this was the 3rd book in the series, so now I must go back and read the other 2. With that said though, I didn’t feel like it took away from this book. Obviously I didn’t fully understand some of the friendship dynamics and Will’s past issues, but I was able to catch on pretty quickly! Can I just say that I absolutely love Pete?! The ending really showed another side of him I wasn’t sure existed soooo good!
I've been waiting for Pete to get his moment in this series, and it's here! I was admittedly curious how Kel Bruem would make a troll landlord appealing, but she delivered in the best way. I found Pete's journey fulfilling as he came to realize his worth, and although I was worried about one specific plot related to his appearance, it was addressed well. It's refreshing to read a romance with an attractiveness differential in which the less conventionally attractive partner isn't exotified for their ugliness, forced to completely change, or given platitudes about what's on the inside that counts. Kelly clearly realizes the good in Pete's physicality and every time they come together (sorry not sorry), it's hot.
As for Kelly, I loved that although she was determined to be HBIC (Head Bitch in Charge) and she certainly made mistakes, she remained a dedicated friend. So much so that she channels her friendship- and relationship-related anxieties into Getting Shit Done and planning the unusual wedding of the century. I don't normally go for wedding planner romances, but this one worked for me.
Though I do enjoy the trope of a flighty (actually sorry this time since Kelly is a siren) character finding a partner who grounds them, I also appreciate that Kelly doesn't suddenly discard her need for independence when she falls in love. She and Pete respect the aspects of themselves that they can't change but make efforts to improve the things that really bother them. They craft a relationship that works for them and is a believable happily-ever-after.
And hello, can we talk about the pining? Pete's obsession with Kelly is palpable. I caught myself biting my lip a few times as he quite literally drooled over her (without being objectifying). When Kelly finally realized her feelings for him and they got together, I was ecstatic that Kel Bruem didn't dodge from the physicality of a troll with a siren. We got bird anatomy, people. And we love it. (I did, anyway! And the troll anatomy!) At first, the dirty talk wasn't quite working for me because Pete is such a gentleman, but then I thought, that's exactly the point.
Characters from previous books in the series making their appearances was fun for me too. Will and Evelyn are particular favorites for me, and seeing Will's personal progress (I won't spoil you for his book because you should read it!) made me smile. There are great callbacks, but I don't think they'd make this book hard to follow for someone who is unfamiliar with the prequels. (Again, read them!)
I had a fabulous time with Pete and Kelly's story, and once I set aside any preconceived notions I had about what a troll romance might look like, it was a damn fun ride.

I'm telling you, Kel Bruem knows how to write monster romance. This one is no exception.
I loved Kelly and Pete. Like the obsession is real. Kelly is just that kind of character you can relate to so easily. A woman who has devoted her life to her career and making a name for herself. Horrible at knowing what she wants, let alone along for it. You can't help but cheer for her.
Plus that museum scene, it had me needing to take a breather. Cause it was HOT.
Highly recommend for my monster romance lovers that need a little more out of the box monsters. Who doesn't love a good troll and siren mashup? AND you get cameos of all her other characters from the series. It's such a fun read and you need to just do it.
I just adore monster romances and Kel Bruem is becoming one of my go to authors for this genre. The way she combines humor and heat is nothing short of magical.
We met Pete in the previous stories, and I was happy he was getting his HEA. He thought he was going to be forever friend zoned by Kelly, a siren who is a successful business woman. Pete has some image issues since he is a troll. I really liked how the author addressed this. Not all heroes have six packs, after all!
This is the last book in the Unusualities series, but I look forward to reading future books from this author!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Listen, I love monster romance. go through my history and you will see I have read a variety. but give me a sweet, intelligent gentlemen of a troll like Pete and I went FERAL. Kel gave me that troll dad-bod man with Kelly, who is a ball busting Siren running not one, but TWO businesses and is ridiculously independent. BOOM, I melted. Add the chaos of a leprechaun and merekind wedding to heighten the stakes is a chef's kiss. (MINUS ONE STAR FOR YOU KNOW WHAT, MA'AM.)

Pete is fantastic as a character and that undying devotion in a character is something I always adore. You can really see how the writer has gotten better over the series. The only downside is that it's a bit of a slow burn again like the 3rd book.
