Hating the arrogant quarterback was easy… until I needed his help.
My escape is all planned get promoted at my restaurant job, finish college, avoid distractions—i.e. men—and soon love, with all its broken promises, will be in the rearview mirror.
Until my manager informs me that if I want that promotion, I’ll need to be trained—by none other than Reeve Dalton.
Shafer U’s cocky blue-eyed quarterback? The man I’ve despised since he humiliated my best friend?
Please, no.
I’m not afraid to let Reeve know I find his arrogance infuriating instead of intoxicating—no matter how many times he catches me staring at his sexy signature smirk.
If only he didn't step in and rescue me from a humiliating showdown with my ex. If only he wasn’t so good at firing up my short temper. Then maybe my desire wouldn’t burn even hotter than my hate.
Now I’m in trouble. Because girls all over campus would throw away their lives for one night with Reeve… and I might just be one of them.
Hate To Be The One is a full-length standalone novel and can be enjoyed even if you haven't read the other books in the Shafer U Series.
Welcome! I write spicy romances with realistic characters and plenty of delicious tension. I live in the Midwest with my husband, kids and rescue pup. When I'm not writing, you can find me in the garden (give me all the dahlias and peonies!), cooking (pasta for the win) or planning my next hike.
ARC review 💚 If you love a fierce fmc, a popular football player mmc & a good enemies to lovers book then this is one for you! The author rocked this novel (as she has with the entire ‘shafer u’ series thus far) i ate this book up in less than a day because it was so well written and easy to read. I adored the story between Reeve & Jade, their dynamic and undeniable chemistry even at the beginning of the book had me giggling🤭 i didn't forget about how the spicy scenes were so good and definitely plentiful throughout🌶️ 🥵
enemies to lovers Found family Sports romance 🏈 banter fall vibes college campus dual POV he makes her beg angst locker room scene he tutors her Playboy tamed by love Cocky mmc Forced proximity
“His cockiness is so f-cking sexy, everything I've hated about him now making me shake with desire.”
The taste of her hits my brain like a dr*g, and immediately I'm out, on another planet where only she and l exist.
This kiss is nothing like our first kiss. That was a question, and this is an answer: yes.
"How was this our first kiss? Impossible. There wasn't a world where I hadn't kissed him a thousand times.
“The taste of her hits my brain like a drug, and immediately m out, on another planet where only she and l exist.”
Reeve Dalton is the star QB at Shafer U and he needs to land in the top draft pick of the NFL, but first he needs to win the Heisman Trophy. He is a senior and the clock is ticking, just like his massive ego. Jade Kelly is a senior at Shafer U and she's a Psychology major but her plans change after a sudden breakup with her boyfriend. She is thinking of taking art history in Spain looking for a life changing moment. Both Reeve and Jade know each other as their best friends are dating the other and are serious. So they can’t stand each other. But can’t deny this undeniable attraction. Once they both set aside their feelings and get to know each other giving each other the benefit of doubt their attraction and tension become unbearable and they share an unforgettable kiss, and try to keep things platonic but as always things get messy. I 💯 recommend this read I was hooked and couldn’t put this down! I freakin loved this read.
I was disappointed with Lorenzo and Ruby’s story in book 2 but Reeve and Jade are something else. I was immediately captured by Jade’s snarkiness and Reeve’s easy-going personality. Jade dislikes towards Reeve is well known, even to him. And this get to another level when Reeve finds a job where Jade works, actually ‘stealing’ the position she was aiming for.
What comes after this is a series of heated moments, where they move from dislike to like to even something else. Something more.
The way they handled their relationship was expected and moved as I predicted, but it still was an incredible and enjoyable book to read.
Thank you Kristen Vail and the Author Agency for the ARC, all opinions are my own
Well Kristen has done it again. I loved Jade and her snarkiness and Reeve with his golden boy personality but no one truly sees the real him. Until her. I loved it, I’m not gonna lie I was a little frustrated with the ending but I get it for it to move the story along. I am really enjoying this series and I can’t wait to see what is next.
Thank you Kristen Vail for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

We first meet Reeve in book 1 and as much as he is the typical cocky, jock I knew he would be my favorite and was looking forward to his story. He has his sites on the NFL and can let a relationship distract him. Jade is strong willed and stubborn. She has goals of moving to Spain and has no interest in relationships.
This is such an easy going read that has you immediately intrigued by the characters. The banter between Jade and Reeve his fun and their chemistry is off the charts. Loved this couple so much!
I did enjoy Jade as a FMC at first but I felt like she got really whingey and annoying near the end and the way Reeve acted annoyed me because rather than speaking to her he just acted like a spoiled brat
First of all… HOW is this Book 3 and I’m only just now hearing about this series??? I feel ROBBED. Deprived. Emotionally bamboozled. But also thrilled because now I get to binge the first two immediately like the unhinged reader I am. 😭🔥📚
This book didn’t just give me an enemies-to-lovers romance — it sprinted across the field, tackled me emotionally, stole my breath, and whispered “my girl” while I tried to gather my dignity. From page one, it grabbed me by the soul and said, “you’re not doing anything else today,” and honestly? Correct.
Jade is one of the realest heroines I’ve read in a long time. She’s messy, stubborn, soft, insecure, hopeful, chaotic, and deeply human, a girl trying to choose herself even when it terrifies her. Her vulnerability mixed with that “I don’t care what you think” energy?? I adored her.
Reeve Dalton, the golden-boy quarterback with swagger for days and a heart he refuses to show… yeah, I fell HARD. Behind all that charm is loneliness, pressure, and fear of being nothing more than his reputation. The depth Kristen Vail gave him made every cracked-open moment hit like a freight train.
And their chemistry??? Electric. Earned. Slow-burn TORTURE. ✨ banter that sparkles ✨ tension that smolders ✨ emotions that punch you in the chest ✨ intimacy that feels tender AND explosive
This is the exact brand of romantic chaos I live for — the kind that makes me clutch my Kindle like a lifeline. By chapter 41, I was emotionally wrecked in the best way. And the ending? It mended me so softly I wanted to cry again.
The Shafer U world feels warm, familiar, and alive, with characters who add texture without ever overshadowing Jade and Reeve. Even though this stands alone beautifully, interconnected-series readers are going to devour every thread.
Tropes you’ll devour like a five-course meal: 🏈 Enemies to Lovers 🔥 Forced Proximity 💛 Golden Boy x Chaotic Girl 💋 He Makes Her Beg 😤 Sworn Off Love 💫 Player Tamed by Love 🖤 Morally Gray but Soft on the Inside 🌪️ Chaotic Banter ❤️ Found Family ✨ Slow Burn + BIG emotions
Kristen Vail balances humor, angst, depth, and steam with such skill that I couldn’t stop turning the pages. This book is alive, heartfelt, and unforgettable — the kind of romance that ruins you a little and then kisses your forehead afterward.
A HUGE thank you to Kristen Vail for the ARC — this was the best kind of emotional ambush, and I’m officially obsessed with the entire series now. 💕🏈🔥
“Hate To Be The One” is the third book in the “Shafer U Series.” Reeve Dalton is the star Quarterback at Shafer University. He is the golden boy with the swagger of success, but looks can be deceiving - but underneath he is only lonely and under extreme pressure. “Unlike some of my friends with perfect GPAs or awesome job prospects or a family business their parents are waiting to hand over, football is all I have.” He wants to be the number one draft pick for the NFL - this is his only goal until meets Jade Kelly. After Jade’s life is turned upside down when she breaks up with her boyfriend, she decides what she wants to do with her future, finally. Currently, she is studying Psychology. “I want to study art history in Spain after graduation.” Both on different paths, different goals, different futures.
“I urge him closer, pleasure sinking into me at every point where our bodies touch. His free hand moves to the back of my neck. His fingers twist carelessly in my hair, gripping me firmly so I’m at his mercy. He’s not gentle and he’s not rough. He gives me exactly what I want.”
There is never a dull moment! I’m very happily hooked - I did not want it to end! Once I started reading, I could not put this book down! At times you will laugh, you will cry, get angry and frustrated - most of all, you will love the twists! You will fall in love with Reeve and Jade, hoping that everything with work out for them and that they have a future together. I know I did….
“She makes me high. She makes me feel everything. Jade may turn to putty under my hands when we’re in bed, but she’s got that indomitable fiery spirit that makes me want to tattoo her name on my forehead for everyone to see….”
This book will charm “the pants off you” and leave you going back for more. I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful love story. This is a lovely book that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. From page to page, chapter to chapter, from cover to cover - you will enjoy this beautiful story! This book will not disappoint! Highly recommended 😊
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful arc @kristenvailbooks

“Jade.” He kisses my throat, his lips so tender that a wave of emotion simmers inside me. “Let’s stop fighting whatever it is we’re fighting.” Oh. Tears sting the backs of my eyes, appearing out of nowhere. I never had him fooled.
“Who were you home with on that legendary night?” “Food poisoning.” “Well, I guess I win this round.” I look at the clock. “It’s not even one. Don’t let me stop you if there’s a party calling your name.” Reeve rolls onto his side to look at me. “Stop me? Girl, you own me. You know you do.”
“No one can take your talent away from you. The world knows what you are. And if they ever forget, I promise I won’t.” “Aww, shucks,” he jokes. “I’m sorry to be a downer tonight.” “Will you stop? You’re allowed to have feelings. Besides, I love being the one you talk to.”

She just needs to get away from her life and everyone in it so, she's thinking of taking Art History in Spain.
They both know one another since their best friends are seriously dating each other. Both Reeve and Jade want to be the center of attention, talk a lot and cannot stand one another but will admit, when they have to, that the other is hot.
Reeve gets the job she wants and now to make her plans reality she needs Spanish lessons and it just so happens that Reeve speaks it fluently so, Jade will need to bury the hatchet and ask him to tutor her.
Once they decide to give each other the benefit of the doubt, they get along really well. Both have the same personalities, but the attraction gets out of hand with one life changing kiss.
Jade and Reeve said that they would only be friends and know they are on a timeline. Neither wants to give up their dreams for the other and neither can admit that the hate has turned into love.
Reeve Dalton is the star quarterback of Shafer U’s football team and is just waiting to graduate knowing he’s got a for sure NFL contract waiting for him. Jade Kelly happens to be the best friend of his best friend’s girlfriend, who Reeve wronged a long time ago. Jade being the loyal friend she is, she HATES Reeve. Reeve starts working at the restaurant Jade currently works at and he happens to get the job that Jade was hoping to be promoted to. That furthers her hatred towards him. It gets worse when she gets the promotion BUT she has to be trained by Reeve 🫢 Jade is a very confident woman and isn’t afraid to speak her mind especially to Reeve. He’s cocky and smug which she hates .. or does she 🤔 One night they share a kiss that changes everything. Neither of them ever wanted to be in any sort of relationship which they make clear to each other from the start. Jade has plans to move to Spain for an art history program and Reeve obviously has plans to be drafted to the NFL not knowing where he’ll end up. Somewhere along the way their feelings become more than disdain and hatred and they finally admit their love for each other.
I wasn’t expecting to love this book as much as I did, but this was it for me 😍 both MCs are hardheaded and stubborn but that’s what made me fall in love with them both. The story and character development was 👌🏻 the ending was absolutely perfect. The romance was great and the spice was spicy 🥵 I cannot wait for book 4!

ARC review Antecdotal thoughts while reading Open-door Football romance Jade - MFC, college student, possibly changing majors heading into senior year, studying/ish abroad??, secure in her individuality and personal style "I know by now that anyone who takes the role of advisor to you seriously is kidding themselves, but this degree is your insurance policy." 🤣🤣 Poor Mark, he sounds exhausted!! Lenni - bestie to Jade, journalism major, dating wide receiver football star 🤞heading to the NFL Reeve - starting QB, senior year, "always known" heading to NFL, friends with Lenni's boyfriend since high school at least, not financially well off, works hard in school to compensate for an OHI and a SLD, volunteers at the hospital; a bit of an introvert Jade + Reeve = Enemies to Lovers trope? Reeve, are you jinxing yourself? Jade, give yourself credit; you are a great cheerleader for Lenni. Jade, do you self-sabotage? Apologize! Growth you two I agree with the basement Reeve. ..."being brave means being scared but doing it anyway. " Reeve shipped them. 😆 How sweet about the Bronco "gift". Hard liquor and a lake spell problems! Reeve's origin story, glad he shared it Come on you two, communicate! Is Jade going to the library roof? If so, how will she get Reeve's attention?? You preach Momma Minnie!
This is the third book in the Shaffer U series, but you can easily dive in without reading the first two. The story follows Reeve, the star quarterback with NFL dreams, and Jade, a strong-willed college student who’s determined to dislike him because of his past with her best friend. What starts as animosity slowly turns into something deeper as they spend time together at work and during Spanish tutoring sessions. The enemies-to-lovers trope is well executed, and I really enjoyed the character development. The onion analogy fits perfectly—layer by layer, you see who Reeve and Jade truly are. Watching them grow individually while building a relationship was satisfying, and the ending felt hopeful as they both chase their dreams while committing to a long-distance relationship. That said, I struggled to connect with Jade at times. Her sarcasm during serious conversations felt immature, and her grudge against Reeve seemed unnecessary, especially since her friend had already forgiven him. These moments made her harder to root for compared to Reeve, who showed genuine effort to change. Overall, this was an engaging read with heartfelt moments and a solid romance arc. If you love college sports romances with a mix of tension and growth, this one’s worth picking up. I’m excited to see what’s next in the series!
This book was so freaking cute! I loved everything about it. The relationship between Jade and Reeve was so perfect. The banter was top notch, the friendships fit perfectly into the story, and the chemistry/tension between the two main characters was wrote incredibly.
Reeve is the star quarterback of the college football team. He’s cocky, confident he’s going to become pro, and well aware that he’s attractive. He could have any woman that he wants but when he meets Jade, his world tilts on its axis. For the first time in his life, he can’t get use his usual lines to get a woman. Even though he was cocky, this man was everything. The tension and banter between these two was pure fire. Watching him fall in love so hard and lose all sense of control was emotional. He was wrapped so hard around his woman’s finger.
Jade is a force of nature with her sharp tongue and take no crap attitude. From the beginning, she wants nothing to do with Reeve because she believes he’s just like all other guys. When they start spending more time together, she begins to melt for the cocky, arrogant man. When she gave in to her desires, she took what she wanted without hesitation. The battle that they go through for each other was full of emotion and wrote perfectly. The fierce love and connection that they have with each other was out of this world.
Thank you The Author Agency for my ARC of Hate to be the One, Book Three in the Shafer U Series by Kristen Vail!

First off, thank you, Kristen, for letting me be part of your ARC team and read Hate To Be The One ahead of release!
Hate to Be the One is everything I want in a college enemies-to-lovers romance—tension, banter, heat, and characters with real emotional depth.
Jade’s hatred for Shafer U’s golden-boy quarterback is legendary, and honestly? Her snark is perfection. She’s fierce, loyal, and absolutely determined to dislike Reeve Dalton after what he did to her best friend. But the more time they’re forced to spend together, the more that razor-sharp snark becomes the perfect foil to Reeve’s laid-back charm.
And here’s the thing—Reeve’s “easy-going, everyone’s favorite guy” persona is a total mask. He’s hardworking, stressed, and carrying way more pressure than anyone realizes. But Jade sees right through him. When a setback shakes his confidence, she’s the one who helps anchor him—and that shift in their dynamic? So good.
The tension between them jumps off the page from the very first clash. The banter? Chef’s kiss. The slow crumble of their walls? Delicious. Their chemistry had me flying through chapters and refusing to put the book down.
If you love enemies-to-lovers with heat, heart, and characters who challenge each other in the best ways, this one absolutely delivers. 💚🏈

This was my first book by Kristen Vail, and I was honored to be picked to read this an as ARC. I am a sucker for sports romance so this was right up my alley. Kristen has a way with keeping the reader engaged and wanting more. Her writing is captivating and I can’t wait to read more by her.
This story follows Jade; a tough as nails, take no shit woman who knows what she wants and more specifically who she doesn’t want. That being the one and only Reeve Dalton; the star stud quarterback of Shafer U. When Reeve shows up at the last place she expects, her work, Jade knows she’s in for a surprise. Their mutual disdain for each other is pretty evident. However, after one night when Jade’s ex shows up at the bar. When Reeve comes to her rescue something starts to shift between them. With friendship growing between them could something else be blossoming between them? Will Jade, who has sworn off men (at least for now), realize maybe not ALL men are scumbags and some are capable of real love? Can Reeve who eat, sleeps, and breathes football, finally realize there is more to life then going to the NFL? Can what they develop between each other survive their very different, very big dreams? Read Hate to Be the One to find out! Out Now!
Kristen is a new to me author and I really enjoyed my first book by her. Hate to be the One is a football enemies to lovers and this book in the Shafer U series, features Reeve and Jade. Polar opposites, Reeve Dalton is the cocky, arrogant Quarterback who’s the golden boy of football. Popular with girls, among his friends and at parties, he’s sworn off any relationships, his focus being on making the NFL.
Jade is a free spirited, opinionated, fiery girl who after being blind sided by the break up of her relationship, she’s decided to study overseas to start over. Trying to make extra money to fund her trip she works at a local restaurant…where Reeve starts to work. Jade hasn’t gotten along with Reeve since he pulled a prank on her best friend the previous year.
Through a series of events they start to spend more time together, and attraction starts to grow. Fairly early in the book they form a connection and become two half’s that fit together perfectly. But nothing can ever be fully perfect….as time moves on and the decision if Jade will move overseas or not is looming, will her relationship and her feelings for Reeve be enough to stay and can they go the distance if they’re apart?
I was so excited to have another story come out of Shafer University and to have it be our cocky player (both on the field and off) in Reeve and our sassy, takes no shit from anyone Jade, this was definitely a fun enemies to lovers read. Well, more Jades enemy. Nevertheless! The banter between these two was so fun as we got to watch the two of them slowly get closer and their feelings for each other develop. I loved that we got to continue seeing Cam and Lennie (duh, their best friends of the two), I just would have liked to have seen more of Lorenzo and Ruby. We got to see Lorenzo some during football scenes, but not seeing them hardly as much was a bit of a bummer as it felt this book connected to book 1 more. They are definitely interconnected standalones, which I get, but just would have been cool to see if Jade would have gotten along with Ruby as she spent more time around the team and their girlfriends. The way our boy Reeve beats himself down throughout the book had my heart breaking for him though. He was always so hard on himself and any mistake was an astronomical one. It definitely makes sense into his cocky attitude, as that is something he can control. I adored their story and can’t wait for the next one!
Hate To Be The One is about timing, identity, and trying to figure out who you are while the world thinks it already has you labeled.
Jade is one of those heroines who feels real. She’s soft but not simple, emotional but not dramatic. I connected to her need to reinvent herself, to find something bigger, something that feels like hers. She’s messy, stubborn, loyal, hurting, and hopeful all at once. Watching her try to choose herself — even when it’s terrifying — just got me.
And Reeve… wow. He’s the golden boy everyone watches but no one truly sees. The pressure he carries, the loneliness under the confident charm, the fear of being only what other people say he is… it was written so honestly. He feels big and bright and human.
Their chemistry is slow-burn, banter-heavy, emotionally loaded, and when it hits? It hits. Not rushed, not forced — it feels earned.
There are scenes that made me laugh, a few that made my chest hurt, and more than one moment where I had to put the book down and just breathe.
Overall, this is a story about finding yourself and finding someone who meets you where you already are.
I had the pleasure of being selected as an ARC reader for this book, and I was so excited for this opportunity because I loved the first 2 books in this series!
Reeve and Jade’s story was both heartwarming and heart shattering. They both were so adamant on not getting into a relationship with anyone their senior year of college. Jade because she had just been burned by her ex (who she thought she was in love with) and Reeve because it was his last chance to prove he deserved to be drafted into the NFL. But fate had other plans when the two of them found themselves working together at a local restaurant.
Their attraction (and disdain) for one another was so intense and it didn’t take long for them to quickly fall in love with each other. Their chemistry was spicy and the way they were both exactly what each other needed was the heartwarming part of this story.
The heart shattering part was watching them both be so stubborn and hard headed by keeping their true feelings from one another. And the third act breakup just sealed the deal on the heart shattering.
Hate To Be The One - 💚enemies to lovers, 🏈football romance, 💚college, 🏈forced proximity, 💚"my girl", 🏈he makes her beg, 💚player tamed by love, 🏈banter, 💚fall vibes, 🏈open-door spice, 💚angst, 🏈sworn off love and all the feels . There are some books and series out there that just resonate with you and touch your heart ❤️ in a way that’s not so easy to put into words. In a way that rarely ever happens. Well I can say with 100% certainty that every time I pick up one of Kristen Vails romances , it doesn’t matter if it’s part of a series or not . That’s exactly what happens every single time . This series is no different, in fact it’s phenomenal and so utterly addicting and we’re only on book 3 . I absolutely adored Reeve and Jades story so so much. Watching them go from hating one another to falling head over heels , was so much fun . The obstacles they had go get through to find their happy ending, all the humor , the witty banter, the angst , the steamy , heartbreaking and heartfelt moments. I seriously could not stop smiling, laughing, crying, cheering and even yelling outta pure frustration the whole way through. Kristen’s Shafer U Series is one of my absolute faves
From the very first chapter, Hate to Be the One had me smiling and totally falling for Reeve and Jade. Their chemistry was instant, sharp, snarky, and impossible to ignore. Every time they clashed, you could feel the tension simmering just beneath the surface.
Jade is one of those heroines who steals every scene. She’s fiery, unapologetic, and so beautifully human, the kind of girl who pretends she doesn’t care but feels everything so deeply. And Reeve… confident, cocky, and chasing his dream, but under all that swagger is someone who just wants to be understood.
I loved how their enemies-to-lovers journey wasn’t just about attraction; it was about trust, ambition, and learning to see yourself through someone else’s eyes. Kristen Vail knows exactly how to balance humor, heart, and heartbreak.
By the time I reached the end, I was completely gone for these two. The slow burn, the banter, the emotional depth, everything about this book worked.
If you love college sports romances with fiery banter, emotional growth, and the perfect mix of angst and sweetness, Hate to Be the One will absolutely be to one for you.
I received this book as an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I really really liked this book! It kept me in my feels through the whole thing!
Romance books are hard for me because sometimes they can get a bit unrealistic and cheesy. But this book didn’t do that. It was raw and real feeling.
Their banter was funny as heck. Reeve and Jade were definitely meant for each other. But like real relationships it didn’t come easy to them.
There were times when Jade really pissed me off with being so closed off but it’s because I’ve been there. She was me which is why this story was so relatable. Reeve was cocky and arrogant but once he came out of his shell he was so loveable and just wanted to succeed. They both had to step out of their comfort zone for each other and I loved that.
The ending made me happy. I’m a sucker for a good HEA. All in all I really enjoyed this book. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series but this book definitely convinced me I should!
We're back in Shafer U for Book 3 in the series - A stand alone with interconnected characters from a great bunch of friends at uni. Reeve is Cam's (Book 1 -Right the first time) best friend and fellow football teammate. He's the QB for the team and a bit of a ladies man. Jade is Lennie best friend (Lennie is Cam's girlfriend) and has always hated Reeve right from the get go but Reeve knows all the buttons to push on Jade to get a rise until its no longer a rise he wants, just her. Slowly their hatred for each other turns to more and their connection is palpable, everyone around them knows it. Despite Jade's reservations and her plans for next year, she gives into the connection and soon enough Reeve and Jade are building something beautiful that's sweet, steamy and sizzling. Tears all round at chapter 41 and of course Kristen mends my little heart by the end, but it was touch and go! Another brilliant read from an excellent sports series!
I voluntarily reviewed a free advance copy of this book provided by the author. The opinions expressed are my own
Reeve Dalton. Ugh. The cocky quarterback with that smug grin you just know is trouble. I wanted to hate him right alongside the heroine. I tried to hate him. But then he opens his mouth, and he’s infuriating and charming and impossible to ignore. And don’t even get me started on how protective he gets—it’s game over.
And jade? I adored her. Fierce, stubborn, determined not to fall for him—but her inner struggle was so real. The banter between them is pure gold, every scene loaded with heat, heart, and that delicious slow-burn spark that keeps you grinning like an idiot at your screen.
What I love most, though, is that it’s not just steam and snark—it’s got that emotional gut-punch too. Watching two people who swore they couldn’t stand each other start to see past the walls they built? Perfection.
Kristen Vail, ma’am, you own me. This book is everything I crave in a college romance—angst, laughter, swoon, and just the right amount of spice. Five messy, giddy, I-can’t-stop-thinking-about-Reeve stars. 💕🔥🏈
Hate to be the one is hands down my favorite Shafer U book and couple. I love Jade and Reeve so much. I really enjoyed their enemies to lovers / dislike to friendship progression throughout the book. It was written so well. Jade, mouthy independent, doesn't care what people think and knows what she wants. Reeve arrogant star quarterback knows he's admired by all and destined for the NFL. The two know each other because their bestfriends are dating and through circumstances they start spending more time with each other and the walls come down and feelings blossom. Both don't want a relationship or strings focused on their senior year and goals, but the more they spend time together they can't fight what they feel. However, they're both headed on different paths, him, hopefully, the NFL and her Spain. Can they make it work?
I loved how they built their friendship and how they were able to open up to each other. I also enjoyed seeing characters from earlier books.

Hate to be the one is a sports romance with enemies to lovers and spice. This is Jade and Reeve's story, filled with witty banter and swoon-worthy tutor sessions. Jade is still trying to figure out what she wants in life, but now she wants to try new things. I love how she is forward with what she wants and pursues it with all her heart. In comes Reeve, a hard worker and football player that she hates, who helps her by tutoring her in Spanish. Their chemistry is off the charts, and I love how they go from enemies to friends, and then to lovers. I love how they protect and support each other, but also push each other to go for their dreams. Their story was really an emotional roller coaster, with them holding back their true feelings and protecting themselves from getting hurt. I just love it when they finally come clean with their feelings and realize they need each other. I really love their story, and I can't wait to read more.

Hate to Be the One is a fun but emotionally layered college romance centered on Jade and Reeve. Two people who start out as casual enemies but slowly become each other’s safe place. The tension between them is sharp from the start, but the story really shines when their complicated family backgrounds begin to surface.
Jade is sassy, independent and guarded, still hurting from her mother’s choices and her own assumed heartbreak. Reeve, Shafer U’s confident quarterback, hides a lot of vulnerability behind arrogance due to his upbringing, what he believes relationships always become and his focus on only the game
Their banter is great, their growth feels real and the chemistry is strong enough to carry the book. Add in football energy, forced proximity moments and a balance of angst and heat, this becomes a standout addition to the Shafer U series.
Hate To Be The One is the third story from the Shafer U series. It is an amazing enemies to lovers romance. I enjoyed it so much. The characters were amazing.
Reeve is a quarterback on his college team and is a senior. His dream is to make it to the pros. Jade is majoring in psychology and wants to spend time in Spain. She has always hated Reeve and thinks he is a cocky person.
Jade works at a restaurant and then Reeve needs extra money so he gets a job there also. She has to train him in order to get her promotion. She has no interest in him but as they get closer she gets to know him. They can't deny the chemistry between them. They both have their own traumas to deal with.
I love how Jade and Reeve came together after they got to know each other. They are both very strong and driven people. Highly recommended. I look forward to the next story.
