Jennifer Hartmann resides in northern Illinois with her own personal romance hero and three children. When she is not writing angsty love stories, she is likely pondering all the ways she can break your heart and piece it back together again. She enjoys sunsets (because mornings are hard), bike riding, traveling, bingeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns, and that time of day when coffee gets replaced by wine. She loves tacos. She also really, really wants to pet your dog.
Title: Pieces of the Night Author: Jennifer Hartmann
What to expect: *Accidental kidnapping *Musician couple *Life changing disability
The second half of this book saved the story for me, I do not enjoy reading books where one of the main characters is in a relationship with another person.
This book begins with Annalise, 21 years old, in an abusive relationship and refuses to leave him because she caused him to have a car accident several years ago leaving him with a TBI.
Then she accidentally gets kidnapped by Chase, our MMC, who is down on his luck and gets caught up in a difficult situation.
The second half of the book was amazing, the lyrics that Jennifer Hartmann wrote for this book were magical! Loved how the band finally found their themselves and made a family together.
Safety: FMC is in a relationship with OM for majority of the book, does include closed door intimate scene with OM. On page drug overdose. Third act separation.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom Books for the ARC. The opinions are my own and do not reflect Indigo or their affiliates. Not sure where to start with this one. Jennifer Hartmann is a beautiful writer so this book about music and lyrics was safe in her hands. The hiakus throughout the book are so poignant. I also loved the found family in this one. Found family is one of my favourite tropes and the band is a great one for Chase. Unfortunately there are several things I just didn’t like that changed how the book hit for me. One of the big ones was the attitude towards gun violence. I think that’s something that is very American but all the justification for the gas station shooting just made me feel uncomfortable. Fear is the worst justification for shooting an innocent person accidentally. And the topic came up repeatedly throughout the book. I get what she was trying to do with the Singh family tie in but I just couldn’t swallow that part. The other big issue was that I just don’t enjoy the romances where one character is in a relationship with someone else for half the book. There was just too much of Alex for me. Again I understand why but it impacted my enjoyment of the book. Overall it’s a beautifully written and emotional love story. I’d recommend to anyone who loves music and angst. 3.5⭐️

Thank you NetGalley for the arc. I’m a huge Jennifer Hartmann fan and sing her praises often but this one just didn’t do it for me. I think maybe I’m just not into music romance.
