The third installment of White’s Temptation Project trilogy is the most exciting. Also the smartest and the funniest. Purgatory Problems looks past the demon Tarantula’s efforts to deliver adolescent souls to Hell—routinely self-sabotaged by her annoying habit of empathizing with her victims—toward thorny questions about Purgatory and the souls relegated there. I’m insufficiently schooled in the finer points of eschatology to know whether White’s description comports with dogma, but who cares? Her notion of where Purgatory “is” and how its souls are housed is original and clever. This is compelling stuff but, ultimately, philosophy takes a back seat to drama—the arch-demon Lilith’s determination to rule Heaven and Hell herself and, nearly as important, to destroy Tarantula. White gives us a nail-biting series of close calls and misdirection driven by deft characterization of individual demons and angels, all sparked by arch humor. A great and fun read.

The best of The Temptation Project trilogy! Angels and demons negotiate about the fate of deceased souls who lived imperfect lives (who hasn’t?). The demon Tarantula has the unique ability to appreciate the nuances in these decisions and strives to create a fair way to determine the fate of the countless souls in purgatory. Will her nemesis use this against her and strive for an even more diabolical and cruel hell by overthrowing Lucifer himself? An exciting read!
