I swear this book pulled The Sun because it lit me up from start to finish. I am absolutely FERAL for how many tarot references there are.. I mean, I know that’s the whole point of the book, but it’s just so fun to read and try to guess who everyone is. Even if you don’t know your Fool from your Emperor, you’ll still have the best time.
The characters were truly the best part. Poe completely stole my chaotic little tarot heart (you have to read to find out why), and Peliah is the kind of heroine you root for instantly. She’s strong and proves that not all fantasy heroines are immature messes. The King and Emperor absolutely live up to the expectations (with the egos to match) and honestly a round of applause for how perfectly they represent men. The Major Arcana pop up all over the place, and I don’t want to spoil who’s who, but every reveal had me grinning like crazy.
And maybe it’s just me, but there’s something about this story that hits a little too close to home. The way it mirrors chaos, control, and finding meaning when everything’s on fire. But underneath all the smoke, there’s this steady thread of hope like a gentle reminder that maybe the cards aren’t stacked against us, they’re just waiting for us to reshuffle.
I genuinely believe books find you when they’re meant to, and I’m so grateful the author reached out to me with this one because it arrived at exactly the right time. If you’ve ever looked at a tarot deck and thought “I wish these cards would come to life,” this story is your sign from the universe.
This might be a top contender for one of my fave reads of the year. Trust your intuition and read this one ;)
Oh my GOD. I just finished and WOW! The plot twists, heart wrenching truths, and beautiful reclamation captivated me deeply. My heart is shattered and healed and hurt and open all at once. This felt so unique, and I haven't read anything like it before. Honestly, this book sits right up there with the Maasverse for me! This story, these characters... it will have such a lasting impression on me. Thank you for writing something that made me feel so alive. Book one isn't even out yet and I can't wait for book two!
This debut novel is absolutely mesmerizing. It draws you in from the very first page and refuses to let go. The symbolism is clever without ever feeling heavy, and every tarot card is brought to life in the most unexpected way. What impressed me most is how the author wove the tarot deck so seamlessly into the narrative- I don’t practice tarot so had no previous knowledge going in but by the end I had bought a deck and had a good understanding of a few of the cards. If you’re someone who loves fantasy or tarot this book is a must read.
This book took me for a ride! The whole time I thought I had it figured out and it truly threw me in the last 100 pages!! So so good, characters are heartfelt, action is actioning, and Peliah is the ultimate baddie! Plus the author's knowledge of the tarot and how she presented it in the form of characters and situations was so good, got that good brain tickle from it. I can't wait for the next one ahhhh!
An impressive debut that immediately pulls you into a vivid, well-built world. The characters are so yummy and interesting, each with their own mysterious motivations and growth that make them easy to care about. The story balances adventure and emotion in a way that keeps the pages turning, and the worldbuilding hints at something much bigger still to come. This first book feels like just the beginning of an exciting journey, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds!
I took me about 40% of the way through the book to become fully immersed. The world building in the beginning was too much. But maaaan this book was good. I loved the tarot inspired journey, I loved Peliah.
The world was fascinating, and I loved all the characters they truly were well rounded and well written. This was such a fun and engaging story.
A very creative, original book! Going into the book I didn’t know much about Tarot cards, but by chapter 8 I was hooked and invested in the story and characters! There were twists and turns all throughout. I loved the magic and witches. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
