In the second decade of the 20th century, major world events resonate even on secluded Stone Mountain where Bessie Elliott lives with her husband Fletcher. There's a great war, one that takes away many young men, including Bessie's kin, some never to return. Bessie's role of healer intensifies as she treats those suffering from the Spanish flu and tries to keep it from spreading further on her mountain. She defends a young woman who's in the middle of a controversy that threatens to tear her community apart. And she finds herself involved in the suffragette movement as the women of North Carolina fight to gain their rights under the constitution.

Then when one of her family members makes an appalling decision, one that has the potential to damage a child, Bessie impulsively steps forward to right the wrong.

I feel honored to recommend this book

I have read so many books in my life time. This biographical journey, filled with history of one woman,s life, has filled me with inspiration, love, insight, and discovery. The series of 3 books I could not stop reading eager to follow Bessie,s journey, to savor and highlight her wisdom and to re-educate myself on the history of those times. .Me Bessie watched the world change around her; "the progressive era" the "roaring twenties" women's rights to vote and more. This book defines relationships, empathy, love they neighbor, teaching, caring for others in sickness and health. This woman was a blessing for others during her journey. She would be proud of the authors portrayal of her life. Those times were hard in today's face paced standards. They were true self sufficient, hard working people, Our times today make everything so convenient, so easy, we have become a spoiled selfish generation in our journey. There are people who don't know their neighbors much less offer helping free labor to build a home or a barn. It takes catastrophic events to bring us together to rebuild. If you want a down to earth, home feeling read; this book is a good read. It is filled with, love, insight, mystery, education, and more. You just have to read it! It is just one of those books! I'm looking for book 4 now it hasn't ended. I also plan to read some of the references suggested by the authors. Awesome book!

Beloved Woman (Appalacian Journey Book 3)

I love these books, they are easy to read and the kind of book you want to read again! After a while I feel my brain using the country slang with a natural easy, like learning a new language. Learning the healing arts of the Cherokee native American along the way is a bonus! As you get older you realise it's always the same problems just different people coping their own way with them. I would love to see these made into a series of movies, definitely take a woman to do the story justice. We need a female Peter Jackson to bring Bessie to life on the big screen, preferably HBO not lifetime!

This is book three in the series. I have read the first two and was not disappointed by this third one. Written by Aunt Bessie's descendants this along with the first two books are great story telling. It is a glimpse into Appalachian life shaped by the remoteness, prejudices and ignorance of her surroundings. As a Cherokee healer she brings her skill, compassion and love to this remote part of Appalachia often destroying or subverting the prejudices and ignorance she encounters. This is an easy read that will lighten your heart and make you feel that there were some real hero's, who are woman, and just quietly went about their remarkable lives.

Very interesting story! I love stories from this time period in history, especially when they are based on real people and places. The events and characters in this series are fascinating to me and really caught my imagination.

I suspect a lot of people would enjoy the Cherokee stories but personally (maybe just because I have different religious beliefs) they were probably my least favorite parts of the book.

Enjoyed reading it immensely. It was hard to put down and I always wanted to know what happened next.

This is the third book in this series, and I have read them in order. I liked the first one best and this one next to the best. The authors choose their words very well when describing beauty in the book, and they also do a very good job of helping the reader get to know the characters.
I noticed more mistakes in this book than I had found in the other two books. These mistakes should have been caught by a good editor. However, the excellent writing and the interesting story trump the mistakes I found so I am glad I read this book and plan to read the next book in the series.

Great story

Great story telling. I used only one Kleenex in the first two but this one was a whole box. I hope to learn about why Jack felt the way she did and Loney too.

Good story about early life living in the Appalachians.

I enjoyed learning about the herbs and plants that were used to treat illness and injuries. I was also glad to hear how the struggle to womens rights evolved. I was impressed how much people looked out for each other and willingly lent a hand during hard times,

Another great story!

Book 3 lived up to all my expectations. A continuation of Appalachia and the people living there. A great history lesson on WWI and the Women's move for the right to vote. This series reminds me of stories from my grandmothers! How fortunate I was to know my grandmothers and great grandmothers! Now onto book 4 in this series.

Okay

For the price it was okay and continued the story but way too much about the women's suffrage movement.. It was like CC Hillery needed to fill the book up with something.

Couldn't put this book down!

I loved all three of these books! It's wonderful how she tells the story of this remarkable woman. She's such a strong and compassionate women who loves her family. The times were so much harder than they are today but theses stories make me wish I lived in those times. Times might have been difficult but in other ways so much better. Family being so much more important and loving than today's times. I wish family values were a little more like that now! I can wait to read the next book! The first three were awesome!!

Very enjoyable....

This, for me, was one of those series of books I hated to finish because the characters became friends that I cared about. Had I read this one first I'd have given it only 4 stars because our Beloved Author got a little carried away in the details of women's suffrage for a few too many pages! It gets five, though to show I thoroughly enjoyed all three and would recommend them highly. I hope there will be a book 4.

I am obsessed with this family now and can't wait until the next book comes out. These books are hard to put down. I have laughed and sobbed. The history that is written about, I just think about my grandparents who were Bessie and Fletch's age and the changes they endured during this time, the tragedies they endured. I highly recommend these books to anyone that are interested in family history.

Wonderful!

I love, love, love this author! These books are delicious! I was so caught up in Bessie and Fletcher's new addition to their family that I didn't even know that the book was ending! (I usually scan to the back of the book to see how much is remaining). I didn't even suspect it was near! I'm so upset that the book is over. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!

Beloved Woman

I gave this rat because I like how Tillery brings the true culture and history of the mountains into the story without it being sappy or unbelievable. The hardships are relatable, the victories attainable. I love how she is able to meld Cherokee culture and Christian beliefs, that is how I grew up. Very real characters.

Love of Appalacia

This book, the third in a series, is just as rewarding to read as the first two books. It takes you back to a slower pace of life but also to many hardships of that time. You have to love Bessie and Fletcher for their commitment to each other and to their families and community. I can't wait for the fourth book, Wise Woman!

Another fine segment of Appalachian North Carolina

I'm a fast reader and these books are finishing much too soon. They are captivating and soothing at the same time, much like sitting by the creek on a cool summer's day and wishing it never had to end and ever so glad I got to know this family.
