In a city on the brink of a civil war, the shapeshifter waits for promised help that never comes…

Shapeshifter Xyla Mobiele clings to her hard-won council seat as she fights, fang and claw, for her city to recognize rights for her fellow shifters. But no amount of rhetoric can change minds when the Gray Death arrives on her kingdom’s doorstep, and Xyla’s penniless shapeshifters will undoubtedly be the first to die. Xyla must flee her home and the political marriage her parents forced her into to seek the aid promised by an old friend – from the vampire king who is supposedly her soul mate.

In the viper’s nest, the vampire king perches on his precarious throne…

Cathalan has only been king for a matter of weeks, and already his rulership has already been marred by failure. Now he must save face while his kingdom rumbles with unrest and his remaining power-hungry siblings sharpen their daggers. His fragile grip on his title grows only all the more precarious when the woman who (impossibly!) rejected him and has haunted his broken-hearted dreams ever since, appears on his doorstep, demanding answers.

Cathalan and Xyla dodge assassination attempts and political threats as they both fight for their people – and against the undeniable attraction that draws them to each other. Cathalan cannot get the taste of Xyla’s sweet blood out of his thoughts, and Xyla cannot stop imagining his hands on her – or the terrible truth that Cathalan is the one who calls to her heart… and he can never know.

But love means sacrifice. Be that sacrifice their people, their titles… or each other.

K.D. Tabith writes books about angry men who turn into wolves who sort their feelings out by grunting, growling, and maybe a bit of groveling because they don’t know how to communicate.

When they're not writing (a rare sight), they're entertaining their fur babies or listening to audiobooks at two times speed (highly recommend to meet your Goodreads goal).

I read this book in one sitting. Wednesday afternoon, back to front, 262 pages in one go. I was shocked when I got to the end. This is all a caveat, as I didn't dislike it. I just don't think I liked it and I just found it wanting in too many aspects leading to my 2 star rating. I was considering DNF'ing it, but there were questions I wanted answered, a relationship I wanted to happen.

Firstly, this is a sequel companion book. Meaning the world building, and many big plot points happened previous books and this is a continuation of that series but its own series(?). That all means that I was confused for a big chunk of the beginning. I was thrust into a world already with key relationships established, a rebellion fought and won, and big political consequences from the actions in the previous books.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the book for me.
The romance was interesting but a big chunk of their relationship was established in previous books. And when they are in the same vicinity, the plot takes over, with the multiple assassination attempts. The politics were not clear, the was no map to help, and the King was barely a King, essentially a figurehead playing King, as all his councillors seemed to rule and make decisions. There is a threat of a plague, but we barely see it. We don't see it affect the people or how it is being used to oppress or ostracise and blame the underclass.
Perhaps I am asking for too much. I wager if you bring it up in the book then you cannot blame me for expecting it later on.

I really wanted to like it. I enjoyed exploring the prejudices of people, I love politics in a book and I loved the assassination attempts. I just needed more.

This is a sequel series to one the author has previously written, which would have been good to know prior to starting this book. Because of this, the first 25% was spent in a state of vague confusion as the majority of the heavy lifting needed by a fantasy story (world building, character interactions etc) had all happened in the previous series.

As a stand-alone or an introduction to the world, it doesn’t function well as the prior knowledge is needed not just to understand the world but also the consequences the characters are dealing with. Once the story progresses enough away from that, it improves, dipping into a new set of politics and other characters.

The romance stands mostly from the previous book and is helped along by the concept of mates in this one. The political struggles that Calathan (fantasy vampire?) faces are far more interesting to me but they are sidelined for the romance to hold more screen time. My main focus was on Darri, bastard half-brother who faces some extreme consequences as a result of his loyalty to Calathan. I hope more is written about him in the future.

Thank you to the author and to BookSirens for the ARC!

A Passionate Fight for Love and Justice

Sing for Me by K.D. Tabith sweeps you into a richly imagined world where shapeshifters clash with prejudice, powerful love is born in turmoil, and political intrigue threatens everything. The story centers on Xyla Mobiele, a shapeshifter who has fought tooth and nail to maintain her seat on the council—and to secure rights for her people. Her life is already an uphill battle when civil unrest and a creeping menace known as the Gray Death force her into impossible decisions.

What drew me in most was the passionate, steamy spark between Xyla and Cathalan, the vampire king who is supposedly her soul mate. Their relationship begins under duress—forced promises, political marriage, betrayals—and yet the chemistry crackles. The danger they face together, the moral compromises, the ferocious desire—it all blends into a romantic tension that’s both heart‑racing and emotionally grounded. Xyla resisting, Cathalan commanding, both of them gradually letting down walls: those moments felt earned and intense.

Another strength of Tabith’s novel is the worldbuilding and the stakes. We don’t just get romance; there’s a real sense of what’s at risk—everything from Xyla’s people’s survival to the political balance of power. The shapeshifter community, the vampire royalty, the looming threat of disease or invasion (Gray Death)—they all add urgency and weight. And even as the romance turns heated, those larger conflicts never feel secondary; they raise the tension and make the characters’ choices more compelling.

All in all, Sing for Me delivers a potent mix of romance, danger, and moral struggle. It’s a book that will pull you in with its political intrigue and heart‑in‑your‑throat romance, especially if you favor paranormal dynamics with stakes high and love even higher. Definitely a four‑star read from me—exciting, steamy, and heartfelt.

Thank you to the author for the free e-ARC! This is my honest review!

Sing for Me is the beginning of a new series that timeline picks up after the Checkmate series. I do recommend reading the Checkmate series first but this book could still be a starting point to K.D. Tabith's world.

Stepping back into the Kingdom of Siacchi, we now follow shapeshifter Xyla trying to fight for shifter rights. This battle seems lost so she flees straight to the king who previously promised her aid. Cathalan though is fighting for his throne and trying to keep his mind off the woman who he feels too much for.

I loved the sharp wit of Xyla that was shown in the Checkmate series and found Cathalan to be so smug and funny. When I saw they were receiving their own series I was ecstatic to see more character growth from these two! Xyla is an absolute badass who paves her own path! I love seeing her bicker with Cathalan who is so smitten with her but overly cautious as he doesn't want his brothers to find out their relationship.

Just like in her prior books, the worldbuilding is beautiful and paints the most vivid picture of the world around you. I love the blend of the shapeshifting and vampric characters with the fantasy royal ties. I cannot wait to see the continuation of these characters!

This is the perfect blend of enemies-to-lovers tension, political intrigue, and swoony romance. From the very first chapter, I was pulled in by how alive and emotionally charged the world felt.
Xyla and Cathalan are genuinely fascinating characters, each carrying so much weight, responsibility, and unresolved history. Their interactions crackle with intensity, and the author does an incredible job describing every moment in a way that makes you feel their emotions right alongside them. The worldbuilding is rich, the pacing tight, and the chemistry? Absolutely electric.
What stood out most was how immersive the writing style is — lush descriptions, vivid emotions, and a story that pulls you in deeper with each chapter. This book feels both unique and refreshing within the romantasy/paranormal genre, and by the end I was desperate for the next installment.
Highly recommend for fans beautifully written character dynamics. I cannot wait for Book 2.

This was an ARC read.

This book takes your imagination to a whole other world. If you like vampires, werewolves, mystery and fated mates then you will adore this book!
Diving in and enjoying the world built by K.D. Tabith is a fantastic journey. Follow along as Cathalan and Xyla traverse the dark times.
Xyla is a strong-minded woman who knows what’s best and follows her own path. She’s head-strong, valiant, caring and brave.
Cathalan is a new king and finding his way through managing a kingdom, betrayal, attempted assassination and following traditions all while fighting to keep his mind (and heart) from reaching out to the woman who has captured his entire being.
You’ll love diving into this book and getting lost in their world. K.D. Tabith brings it to life!

Although this book wasn’t my usual genre, I still enjoyed the story. I wanted more details in a few scenes, but it’s still a really good read.

The depth and detail of Tabith’s worldbuilding continues to amaze me. The lands in their books don’t feel like something made up for a story, but something far, far older and lived in.

I love the political and social machinations, the drawbacks that both Cathalan and Xyla face simply due to their bloodlines.

Beyond that, I’m so happy these two are getting a fully fleshed out story. I adored their banter and tension in the Checkmate series and was very happy to see it carried over into this one.

I love that Xyla is allowed to be such an unmitigated badass too.

Everything about this book gives me complete faith that I will love the rest of the series just as much, if not more, than Checkmate and I am SO looking forward to it!

I really enjoyed getting to know Xyla and Cathalan in this novel and how they were used in this world. I thought it uses the shapeshifter and vampire elements in a engaging way and enjoyed how it was used. I enjoyed getting to read this opening chapter in the Cathalan and Xyla series and had left me wanting to read more in this series. K. D. Tabith was able to create a world that was unique and worked with what I was wanting in this.

Sing For Me, by K.D. Tabith is book one of the Cathalan & Xyla series and it lays the groundwork for the following a books. Cathalan and Xyla met while in prison, and were instantly attracted to each. Both have complicated relationships with their dysfunctional families and hold important positions in their countries. If you are looking for a book with intrigue, family and political drama, meham, murderous plots, and plenty of heat, this book is the one for you.

A little different for me but did enjoy. These two are from different kingdoms, she is a shifter, he a vampire king. They have past issues to resolve as well as fight for their kingdoms and each other. They also have to navigate around those who would see them fail and work at keeping a peace as they fight the threats.

Xyla is on a journey to save her people and will do whatever it takes to do so. Cathalan, the king, is doing his best to save his kingdom at any cost, except for Xyla.

The characters are done very well and the world building is wonderful. This story takes you on a journey of love and betrayal.
