1193 is a dangerous and confusing place--especially if you're from 2009.
Life has not been going as planned for 25-year-old twins Jill and Joanna Mason. Jill, an engineer and secret thrill-seeker, longs for adventure. Joanna, a wedding planner and aspiring writer, is recovering from a bad breakup. A vacation is just what they need to lighten their spirits. But neither one expects what happens next.
While horseback riding through Sherwood Forest, the sisters are mysteriously transported to the 12th century where they're caught in the middle of a deadly feud. Joanna is taken captive by Guy of Gisbourne. Young women in his castle are dying, and she must identify the killer before she becomes his next victim. Meanwhile, Jill enlists Robin Hood's aid in saving Joanna. But his incompetency may cost Joanna her life. As the sisters discover hidden talents and romantic entanglements, they must decide if their destiny actually lies in the past.

Is it okay to blame Outlander for the "time travel romance" genre, or at least for making said genre popular? I don't generally read a lot of romance, but the fact that this one involved both time travel and the legend of Robin Hood intrigued me. And honestly, while it was too full of contrived coincidences for my taste and the romantic angle had me rolling my eyes a bit, it was a cute and fun book, good for an entertaining read provided you didn't think too hard about it.
Jill and Joanna Mason are twin sisters who nonetheless have their differences -- Jill is an engineer who believes in logic, while Joanna is a wedding planner with a romantic streak who aspires to be a writer. So when a vacation to London results in them being catapulted back in time to 12th-century Sherwood Forest, they have VERY different responses to their predicament. Jill ends up among Robin Hood's merry men... and discovers the noble outlaw of the stories is not nearly as selfless and intelligent as the legends make him out to be, and sets out to remake his image. Joanna, meanwhile, ends up in Locksley castle with Guy of Gisborne, and finds herself playing matchmaker and solving a murder. Will both sisters succeed in their goals and find their way back to the 21st century... or will they lose their hearts -- or their lives -- first?
My main beef with this book is the writing. It's workmanlike but serviceable, and relies a bit TOO much on contrived coincidences to sit well with me. (The girls just happen to be watching a time-travel movie and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves not long before their trip back in time? That's only the first example...) The book also needed to see an editor, as I spotted several typos -- most notably using the word "peak" instead of "peek." And the speed at which both girls fell for their respective love interests felt incredibly unrealistic... though given that this is a romantic fantasy, I suppose that's to be expected.
All griping aside, however, the book was entertaining. Both sisters are well-done and kick-butt characters who see actual development over the course of the book, and while they do need rescuing from time to time they're also capable of saving themselves/each other when needed. Some of the liberties taken with the Robin Hood story might infuriate purists, but I did like this interpretation of the character -- a pleasant but somewhat dim and self-centered man who needed some coaching to become the legendary outlaw we all know. And let's face it, fish-out-of-water stories are always entertaining.
While I'm not sure I'll continue with this series and found the writing lackluster, I can't deny that it was entertaining. And honestly, that's all I expected out of this book, which is just fine. It may not be the masterpiece that Outlander is, but it's still a fun time-travel read with a streak of romance thrown in.
Fun romantic adventure featuring twin women mysteriously sent back in time to medieval England and their adventures with Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne. Excellently crafted story. The mystery, modern and past threads weave together well. I might have enjoyed a more spicy romance in the mix, but the characters and their journeys were engrossing. The start of a series I will enjoy continuing.
I might partly be the wrong reader for this book. The setup on the time travel for both of them felt too contrived to me and nothing later in the book resolved that (like a reason for the contrivance to have happened). So while I'm sure it works well for others and the characters did end up with nice arcs, it just didn't really come together for me.
While at times it felt like I was reading Prince of Thieves with a few changes. I enjoyed the story. Some funny parts, suspense and romance keep you turning pages.
I absolutely loved this book!! Wouldn't it be great to be able to time travel and meet famous people in history? Joanna & Jill meet the illustrious Robin Hood (whom historians around the world still haven't proven if he really existed or was just a made up ballad) and become part of the legend itself. Joanna solves the mystery of 2 murders while Jill teaches Robin what he can do to really make a difference in the world (and become the legend he was meant to be). Neither of the twins come back the same as they were when they went back in time.
I loved how they met the future versions (21st century) of the men they cared about from the 12th century after arriving back home. I am definitely putting the rest of this series on my TBR list.
