‘Back then, no one at the BBC wanted much to do with Doctor Who. So, there was no one looking over my shoulder. No one sticking their oar in, saying ‘You can’t do that…!’

Such freedom! All taken for granted at the time, of course. I asked authors what they wanted to do, and they told me and from that first chat we had a giddy time working it out and bringing it all into being.’
(from Steve Cole’s Introduction)’

Samantha Jones…Faction Paradox…the Amnesiac Doctor…Sabbath…Iris Wildthyme…Compassion…President Romana…

Really fun, nostalgic read! On their own, the stories probably collectively rate a 4.0, but they get an extra point from me for the very fact that this collection even exists — published 20 to 27 years after the source material!

The stories span a wide emotional range, from genuinely moving to frankly a tad corny. Still, every entry was enjoyable, and I found the quality steadily improved as I progressed through the collection.

It was a joy to revisit the novel incarnation of the Eighth Doctor alongside Sam Jones, Fitz Kreiner, Compassion, Anji Kapoor, and other beloved companions. Even more thrilling was reading new stories from classic EDA authors like Steve Cole, Paul Magrs, Jonathan Blum, Steve Lyons, John Peel, Gary Russell, Johnny Morris, and many more.

I was deeply invested in the EDA books during their original run, and diving back into that universe brought me immense joy. Highly recommended for longtime fans of the EDAs!

One of the best short story collections.
Only a couple of weaker entries, most of them are either clever, joyful or both, and most importantly tend to be good short stories rather than just attempts at novels with a very low word count - yes, imho the two forms are very different, and the worst short stories I ever read all forget this

Paul Magrs (whose novels I didn’t enjoy at the time) provides a marvelous finish to round off the collection. Highly recommended.
