Clan A Clan History – From the Highlands to the New World
From the windswept glens of Strathnaver to the battlefields of Crimea and the emigrant ships bound for Nova Scotia, the story of Clan Sutherland is one of courage, endurance, and survival.
This sweeping history traces the clan’s journey across seven - Origins and Chiefs – from Norse-Gaelic roots to the great earls of Dunrobin Castle. - Feuds and Warfare – battles with the Mackays, service at Bannockburn, and loyalty in the Jacobite risings. - The Clearances – evictions, hardship, and exile during one of the darkest chapters in Highland history. - The Diaspora – the journeys of Sutherland families to Canada, America, Australia, and beyond. - Faith, Culture, and Memory – the Gaelic songs, traditions, and heritage that endured across generations. - The Military Legacy – the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders), the “Thin Red Line” at Balaklava, and the proud service of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in two world wars.
For descendants of the clan, this book offers more than it is a record of identity, pride, and belonging. For readers of Scottish history, it provides a vivid portrait of how one Highland family shaped – and was shaped by – the great tides of war, politics, and migration.
Richly detailed yet accessible, Clan A Clan History – From the Highlands to the New World is the definitive modern account of a name that has travelled the world while never losing its roots in the far north of Scotland.
