Prescription for Love

Rate this book
A dedicated nurse and a determined doctor—bound by past heartbreak, united by crisis, and given a second chance at love.

Dr. Phineas Mackenzie has a bold vision for bringing medical care to New Orleans’s immigrant neighborhoods. But the 1905 Yellow Fever crisis threatens everything—and everyone—he holds dear. The last thing he expects is to find himself working alongside the woman who broke his heart five years ago.

Nurse Natalie Morrison returned from the Panama mission field with a plan to stay just long enough to recover her health. But as she assists with the mounting fever cases, she finds herself questioning everything she thought she knew about her calling. Working beside Phin awakens feelings she thought she'd buried, yet pursuing them would mean abandoning her missionary vows and her father's dying wish.

As they fight to save lives in a city gripped by an epidemic, Phin and Natalie discover that sometimes love requires choosing between two kinds of duty—and that God's call may lead in unexpected directions.

I was very much looking forward to Phin's story after reading the connected stories previously where he was a rambunctious orphan and finally adopted and changed his ways. To think that he grew up to be a doctor and wanted to help others that were less fortunate speaks of his true character, along with his upbringing after being adopted, knowing who his parents were. The previous stories were set in Colorado, but this one is set in New Orleans where Phin is now a doctor in the early 1900's. The author did a great job of researching the medical practices of that time period, especially regarding the Yellow Fever outbreak of 1905. It was fascinating to me to read about that.
Natalie Morrison is a nurse, and she's been assigned to work with Phin. Too bad she turned down his proposal 5 years ago! She'll just have to make it work until she can get back to Panama and the mission field which is her true calling. I really liked how she and Phin worked together to try to solve the outbreak crisis. They were able to put aside their previous romantic feelings and do everything for their patients. However, that can only last for so long! I loved the other nurse that helped too!
A great novella but it would have been fun to be a full story too!

It was good to meet Phin again all grown up as a dedicated doctor. His heart has been broken and abandoned again and he only focuses on work, especially his new passion of helping the immigrants of the city that have been forgotten.

Natalie is a missionary nurse dedicated to the foreign mission field at the request of her dying father; she broke Phin’s heart to fulfill her father’s desire. Because of illness, she is back in New Orleans and gets assigned to help Phin with his mobile doctor’s office.

As they battle the Yellow fever raging in the city to save lives, they are drawn closer. Phin must choose to open his heart again, and Natalie must decide what God’s will is for her.

I enjoyed their story. There was lots of historical information about the infectious diseases and fevers which I found interesting. Devotion to family was a priority in their lives and well as God’s will. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.

Prescription for Love (Brides of the West Book 10) by Erica Vetsch is based on an outbreak that little is known about today. The Yellow Fever epidemic of the early 1900’s is the backdrop for this story of Dr. Phineas Mackenzie and Nurse Natalie Morrison. Difficult times produces strong faith which both of these characters need. They have a past relationship that is worked through as they stand side by side helping the ones who have fallen sick.

A novella that give us characters with servant hearts during a time of developing medical practices but also a great need for it. The characters work together for the cause and mission before the romantic side of the story becomes prominence emphasis. I like that about the novella.

This is a short novella that is part of Wild Heart Books’ series Brides of the West as book 10.

It is the fourth of a series of 4 books set mostly in Colorado with connected characters, but this one takes place in New Orleans in 1905. One of the orphans features in Light to My Path, Phin, is now grown up and a doctor just put in charge of a mobile clinic to the immigrant neighborhoods of New Orleans. Yellow fever arrives on a boat that evades the quarantine check. It is very fast paced, with great characters, and left me wanting more!

"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."

Natalie Morrison finds herself in an untenable position. Her dying father, who was unable to be a missionary in Panama left her with the request that she must take his place. Yellow fever, however, does not listen, removing her from the ability to take on the mission of another.

Dr. Phineas Mackensie (Phin), who we met in an earlier book, is in New Orleans to start a mobile hospital, until Yellow fever takes that away. Will he and Natalie find their lost love or has the fever stolen that as well?

Brides of the West Book Ten was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

With this book we have the McKenzie children grown up and living their lives. This is Phin’s story but Tick is also there.

Phin is now a doctor and he will need all his skills to survive the Yellow Fever outbreak in New Orleans.

Natalie is a missionary in Panama but when she gets sick she is forced to stay stateside for months to recover.

Phin and Natalie have a history and working together brings all those feelings back. Together they will help save patients in a very difficult situation.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Brides of the West Book 7

I was so thrilled to have found this book that continues with the MacKenzie Family, and especially Phin, i fell for him a long time ago. Then Micheal, (Tick) comes to New Orleans. Phin a Doctor and Micheal a Preacher. This story continues to bring enjoyment. The icing on the cake was Phin finding true Love.

Phin

This is the 10th book in the series. Phin and Tick from previous books are in this series and references to their parents. It is a short book about an hour. The focus is on the yellow fever epidemic. Due to it being short, there is not much character development or depth of story.

Love the historical fiction with a Christian faith emphasis. Relatable characters working out their faith through challenging life circumstances. Book 4 of 4 about the McKenzie family. Loved seeing Phin all grown up! Always enjoy Erica's stories, both American West and Regency settings.
