A year after rushing into marriage with imposing, handsome federal judge Blaine Castellan, Tamara wants out. Struggling to connect with her surly teenage stepson and traumatized adopted daughter, she is completely overwhelmed. Even worse, Tamara soon realizes that Blaine still harbors a macabre fixation with his deceased first wife, Betty, a vivacious and beautiful socialite unparalleled in all she did.
In addition to her troubled stepchildren and critical husband, Tamara works to complete graduate school and worries her older brother, physician Michael Laurier, will succumb to an undiagnosed medical condition. Amid her crumbling marriage and mounting responsibilities, Tamara finds comfort in the gentle and understanding presence of her coworker and friend, therapist Gil Payne.
But as Tamara decides to escape the clutches of the picture-perfect federal judge, she uncovers just how frightening her husband can be and that a decision to leave will put her in grave danger. As she fights to reclaim her identity and confront her deepest fears, Tamara's life becomes a heart-pounding journey of betrayal, love, and survival.
Soul Tie is the story of wrong decisions. Tamara, a master's student and counselor intern, is married to an emotionally unavailable judge with two children, and she is understandably unhappy. In addition to her unhappy marriage, her beloved brother is dying of an unknown illness, her mother is a terrible person, and she spends the vast majority of the book pining after another emotionally unavailable man.
Tamara's husband is emotionally and verbally abusive. He seems to feel that life is meant to be a certain way, to the detriment of his family, including an adopted daughter, Kateryna, who needs help. Pushing back against her unreasonable husband, Tamara makes a series of mistakes that could not only impact her but also the friends trying to help her. Worse, to divorce her husband would mean abandoning Kateryna.
This book started so slowly that I almost just stopped reading it a few times, but I decided to push through. Despite understanding emotional and verbal abuse all too well, I had trouble connecting with this main character. I found it difficult to care about her and how her story might be resolved.
The book was otherwise well-written and easy to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Tamara, the main character, was born to an absent father (he left the family shortly after Tamara’s birth) and a mother who only doted upon her son and ignored her daughter. Tamara is married to a very influential and wealthy judge whose previous wife had died leaving behind a teenage son and an adopted seven-year old daughter. The judge is rarely at home because of civic responsibility, committee meetings, and work. He expected his wife to be an at home mother taking care of the children and house. On the other hand she was working on getting her Master’s Degree in psychiatry. Life isn’t easy since they both want different things. She doesn’t want to live a life of leisure; the children don’t want a stranger telling them what to do, and the judge wants a domestic servant along a baby sitter. It was very difficult to put the book down while following the various choices made in the book. I had to read it in one day. Read it, you will enjoy this tale.
A thought-provokingly engaging story of a courageous woman who overcomes unusual circumstances in her life with astuteness, independence, and willpower!
