Just incase there is an error on the spoiler tag my spoiler free review is:
I like the first one better. This one has an issue with pacing and having certain characters feel like they could do so much more.

Do I regret buying this book: no, for a debut author without a professional editor this book is honestly a very fun story that does get you hooked. I just personally feel like there were certain scenes that dragged in book 1 and 2 and I didn’t care much for how long the end fight was.

I do think even if you don’t follow her youtube series you will find yourself enjoying the book its an easy read that isn’t too complicated and has a very straightforward story. but if you watched her youtube series before reading the book you will probably feel more connected to certain characters. One thing I really enjoy about this author is she really knows how to write sad death scenes and she really hits the mark with it.

I couldn’t find any info on whether this book had any editor. Im aware there was no professional editor and it’s a one person project but I’m not sure if there was anyone unprofessional looking over the book for spelling mistakes or anything.I feel like a professional editor could have messed around a bit with the pacing and helped tighten some of the high stakes moments so they could balance better with the rest of the book.

Slight spoilers

Having a battle scene for that long can be a lot for a reader to track at times and it makes it easy to skim over sections without missing much.

I I rated the book a 3/5 to support a debut author. I feel like there were some scenes that dragged and I think there is definite room for improvement

Im also reading this book as a person who only saw her content rather recently and stayed away from her content to try and be unbiased as possible for the second book review.

In the spoiler part of the review I will be going to be combining talking about the second book by itself but then I’ll be also referencing the first book. I will give my genuine opinion of each character at the end.

I don’t care about spelling mistakes or formatting errors personally and I had no issues with either.

Ok so this is going to be a long review just as a warning
Im no professional nor do i want to claim to be this is just what i enjoyed and didn’t of the book.

!!!!SPOILERS!!!!

Ok so first I want to commend the authors writing because I feel like the character descriptions are an overall improvement.

But there is a huge issue with both books where it drags. The scene with her mother is ok but it does drag. I like the fact that her mother seems to come to her in a dream but all the talking could have potentially been shortened a couple pages. Im confused by the little light. They say they followed her and the others but then why was she afraid of Vivalda when she approached. One thing I felt was a downgrade in the second book is it seemed like Vivalda had the solution to whatever problem they were facing. She seems to also know the right words to say a lot of the time and I wish she had external pushback like she had in the first. This kind of took me out of the book at times.

Then they head back to the kingdom after it was revealed that Cassius had been controlled but I wish we got a hint into anything that went on while they were gone. Riverlynn stayed back to help her father but it seemed it really didn’t do anything and I wish it was mentioned what she did when they were gone. Cassius seemed really easily freed and now Vivalda can take sylphenic magic which I felt could have been explained better on how she knows she can do that. I wish there was more of a struggle with this. I wish when the serafae were revealed there was any pushback. Like I know they’re all in desperate circumstances but it felt odd that everyone was so quick to accept the serafae. But I was able to look past it because of the fact that they were in desperate circumstances.

Also Calypso is back but I don’t feel like she added much to the second book.

Then they had the battle scene and it lasted forever and dragged. It was like half or more than half of the book and I felt like it could have been shortened. Vivalda’s powers also seem like they always had the answer they needed.

Phoenix came back and I found that it was cool and I had no problem with it. The reason they gave made sense.

When Aladora came back we were kind of given a “thats just how magic is” sort of thing and I wish we were given a better explanation. Like it makes no sense to me that she says at the beginning of the book that she could come back only for a certain amount of time but is now back fighting things and doesn’t seem to have a limited amount of time.

I feel like Aerowen was used in both books to show how powerful other people are like a worf effect. In the first book she is just kind of there and gets her butt kicked by Vivalda. In the second she is shown to be scared of the sylphenic magic when it takes over her ice crystals so she couldn’t use her powers. I feel like personality wise she is very close to Silva’s calm attitude and not much else. I again feel like besides the one scene she is in to create that one being mist she could have been utilized better and while others seemed to have specific arcs even when the arcs were similar I couldn’t get a good read on what her arc was supposed to be. Like maybe give her a situation that only she can solve or a plot point like for example Silva had where there was something hidden underneath her calm mask. Or where Phoenix protected Vivalda. Or the fact that Zyla was able to be powered up by Melantha’s magic. Where it felt like Aerowen never had those moments

The king’s death was heart breaking but there wasn’t much else to it. I wish we could have seen him as the demon form for longer. I feel like it could have been cool to see him and Melantha fight.

Im confused whether he knows he had his oldest daughter or not. Was his memory erased?

Also with magic. It feels like Vivalda got magic because it calls to those who need it. I think? Why didn’t any of the citizens ever get magic? Why does it seem like the only people we see with magic are royalty?

Also why didn’t Melantha infect the citizens how she did Cassius? It feels like her plan would have been more effective if she infected the citizens.

Again the father’s death broke my darn heart. But there was a scene that confused me where Vivalda said Cassius went into the forest and must have ran into Melantha before he got to Aladora and that scene confuses me because how did Vivalda figure it out? It seems like there were soldiers with him why weren’t they infected?

The creation of mist was odd to me. Aerowen says that she knows that Phoenix probably doesn’t want to see her but they had been working together the entire first book so it seemed odd to me. It felt like she was in the book for this scene and didn’t do much else. It was revealed she was related to Phoenix and a species like her. I feel like phoenix coming back and the entire reveal could have happened earlier. There was a couple moments where the lore was explained through a very direct description of the characters. The thing is I felt that the lore was so interesting I would have preferred it being written through dialogue or action rather then direct description. If it was done earlier we could have seen the difference instead of it being explained exactly what it is. I wish that we had more time with mist because she was an interesting character.

With such a big cast in a long battle scene a lot of characters vanished. Like Aerowen was a huge proponent of it and at times Aladora. Zyla had to leave at one point and I want to know what happened in the forest. I think the soul she released may have been her daughter but I’m unsure because afterwards she asks the citizens if they want to meet her daughter but that could genuinely just be me missing a scene or reading something wrong.

The scene freeing Kalvara was neat and I enjoyed that part. It was sad seeing her and technically Aladora sacrifice themselves. Vivalda’s death was also sad and it pulled at my heart strings

POOR RIVERLYNN SHE LITERALLY LOST EVERYTHING!

Ok to characterizations:

Vivalda:
I genuinely liked her character a lot in the first book and I felt for her. I think she definitely handled everything too easily though and I felt like a lot of what she gained wasn’t really earned through any struggle in the first book. In the second I found this problem more apparent. It seems like her magic was the exact tool for everything they needed and I wish she had some scenes learning with her purple form. Also it feels like her flaws in the second book were diminished and things like her recklessness were rewarded instead of negatively impacting her. How did she figure everything out so quickly? It feels like the character may be a self insert and at times it can make it hard to see her as her own character. I wish she faced more outside consequences in the second book when she runs into danger. I feel like Vivalda’s magic wasn’t clear like. Silva has plant based magic, Phoenix has fire magic, zyla works with dark magic, Aerowen has ice magic (later on ice/fire magic) and then Vivalda’s magic seems that it’s whatever they need at the moment. Like Vivalda’s magic is powerful and versatile but at times felt like it lacked limits. I would have loved for her to struggle more in the battle so when she passes her limits it feels more earned

Silva:
She has a character transformation in the second book and it was neat. There isn’t much more to say I liked her characterization. She is a character I looked forward to seeing because of her consistency and she even struggled with her own self doubt despite being a god. Peak characterization for me

Aladora:
I like her characterization I am just not a fan of her coming back because of the explanation we got. just because magic does it and no other explanation. I don’t get why she wants to hide her identity at this point as the crimson warrior from everyone though. Like i get she may have had her reasons to hide it before but why now? Why doesn’t Cassius know she is the crimson warrior?

Phoenix:
I felt she could have had more push back into trusting Vivalda. It felt like most peoples personalities took a back seat in this book for the battle scenes. Why is she mad at her sister? It isn’t really hinted as to why at all to me at least. Why is it that them combining their magic to create a creature suddenly makes them forgive each other?

Aerowen:
I see so much untapped potential with this character I wish could have been explored. It feels like she at most times stepped back into a supporting role and I would have loved to see her have a more active role in the plot. To me it reads like she was written for that one scene with her and phoenix and to show how powerful certain characters are. I can’t find any scene to me that shows her personality and it feels like you could cut her out of the first book and it wouldn’t have changed much. Also she only had two pov’s in the second book and it feels like it didn’t add much. Her transforming into that creature was ok. I feel like when Vivalda says she looks cooler in the book as that form we are being told that she looks cooler but to me it never really changed my perception of the character. Her being connected to Phoenix was something but I didn’t have a big opinion on it. Even when it comes to friendship she kind of feels like an odd man out sort of deal. Phoenix and Silva are friends, Zyla and Aladora are friends or by the line “just like old times” seemed to fight together a lot. Vivalda and Phoenix are friends and Aerowen is just kind of there. She isn’t talked about much in the book and the only noteworthy things i personally saw was her transforming into that creature and helping to create mist. I dont know if she is playful or calm, stern or kind. There wasn’t much of anything that I could see to set her apart from the others. Silva is the calm one with perhaps a harsher attitude hidden beneath. Zyla is the untrusting dark mage who has to learn to open up. Phoenix is the hotheaded protector who cares deeply for others and Aerowen kind of feels just… there. She is seemed competitive in the first book but then in this book I can’t tell anything about her. Also the reveal that her and Phoenix are related didn’t seem to have been hinted at previously. They bicker but so do some other cast members. With her character specifically I just wish she had something to set her apart and that the reveals with her character were built up. Or atleast give her a character arc. She seems to be the most ok with humans next to Silva but i dont get why. Silva has a reason to be ok with humans but it feels like Aerowen doesnt. Also a daragon is a dragon that cant transform into a full dragon. Is there anything a daragon can do that a dragon can’t? I can’t see anything that would make her being a daragon stand out. It sounds like a cool concept but currently it feels like a lesser version of a dragon. By introducing a daragon by what it can’t do im only left curious what it can do.

Zyla:
Her character was fine. To me she was too trusting of Vivalda and I wish her trusting Vivalda could have started in the second book instead of the first. She seems inherently less trusting in the first book but trust Vivalda really quickly. In the second book she fights against Melantha and she gets hurt and it seems like Melantha’s magic in her was going to be a problem because it said she could only fight for so long but i felt like it never built up to anything to me.

Mist:
There isn’t much to say she was only shown for a couple minutes. I couldn’t find any specific personality traits which makes sense since she was added so late in the book. I wish she was added earlier so we could have seen her personality and so we would get less of a description about what she is and instead been shown. I feel like this could have also been done by someone mentioning her species previously. Like have Aerowen or Phoenix mention a rumour of this creature.

Riverlynn:
i honestly wish she did more in the second book. She stayed back to try and help her father but it didn’t seem to do anything. I wish it would have done something. Maybe have her take on some of the dark magic wether intentionally or not? It left me questioning if Melantha’s powers can move around to others or if maybe Riverlynn is immune? Like if she is around someone possessed it feels like Melantha could have had the power to possess others around them. I don’t get why it seems like Melantha never even attempted to do anything to the sister in any way. She sent one of her beasts after her but other then that I felt that she never really did anything and reading book one I was expecting either for her plan of staying behind to help in book one or make it worse or something but it felt very stagnant.

Cassius:
His death was the most impactful to me. I wish there were more scenes with him in the first book to give him a clearer personality. That one death scene was rough. IT BROKE MY HEART. I wish he stuck in the demon form or did something to impact the story in the second book but he didn’t really. I just wish for more with this character. I also wish it was made clearer why he doesn’t know his wife is the crimson warrior? Does he know he has an oldest daughter?

As for the others in the story like the love interests I feel like there just wasn’t much to write about them.

I went to her youtube to see which book is releasing next since one book has the number 5 and the other has the number 6 so i wasn’t sure if the other books were going back or forward in time and it seems like the next book is going to be book 7.

If you like her content and are attached to the characters in her content it would be worth the read and even if you haven’t watched her content I don’t find it particularly hard to get attached to most of the characters but it feels like for some characters if you watched her content before it would be easier to get attached to certain characters so the next book may be worth it if you enjoyed this one.

I think the author has the chance to be an amazing author I just hope she hires an editor because there are certain scenes that drag and I feel like both parts could have been one book if the slow scenes were taken out. There is so much potential.

Personally I enjoyed the first book far more than the second. The first I would give a confident 3.5 or maybe even a 4 given her age when she wrote the book while this one I would rate a 3. I landed on a 3 because this isn’t bad for a debut author and I see a lot of potential for her writing to grow. There were some pacing and telling not showing issues but you can tell the authors love for the book. I feel like if you watched her content it would be easier to connect with the fast paced cast but as somewhat of an outsider perspective of the book I don’t feel that same connection.

Also the character’s playlists haven’t changed much besides adding canon content. I feel like mist looks far different in videos than how she appears in the books. I could just be misreading it but to me she seems to be written far different. My thing is Aerowen’s playlist highlights an issue with the books i have. She has a couple new videos that explain her lore and being related to Phoenix. I understand the want for lore but that doesn’t tell me much on her personality. It ties her to Phoenix but it doesn’t help highlight who Aerowen is separate from every other character. What makes her different than the others?

So good. The mister aspect of it was amazing, even when you thought you knew what was going on it would change in a matter of minutes.
