It’s Christmas in Sedona, Arizona, and Santa’s not the only one coming to town….

Twenty-five years ago, Grace Rinehart’s father — an alien-human hybrid — sacrificed his life to save Sedona from an invading army of reptilian aliens who called themselves “the masters.” Their base was destroyed, but something…someone…survived. Now Grace’s alien DNA has called her to the remains of the alien base, where she finds what was left behind, the prototype for version 2.0 of an alien/human hybrid super-soldier.

Grace doesn’t expect to lose her heart to the one man she knows she shouldn't love. And when the secrets he’s been hiding come to light, she has to face the truth of what the Reptilians have been planning all along…even if it means destroying the only true happiness she’s ever known.

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I do believe this is my next favorite after book 1, Bad Vibrations. While this one didn't have any sort of fighting or perilous situations, the reader could've guessed as much from the start (particularly if they've already read book 5, Falling Angels, like I have - I highly advise reading the series in order though). Despite the lack of life threatening situations, this book was far from boring in comparison to its predecessors. I found it incredibly engaging. The beginning of this book starts 25 years after Angel Fire with Grace as a grown woman. (The interesting thing about book 5 is that it picks up exactly where this book leaves off. While books 1-3 happened in quick succession, none picked up with the exact scene the prior had ended on.) Something I have thoroughly enjoyed about Christine Pope's Sedona Files series is that each book is incredibly different from any other in the series. Each romance is completely different from the others, even in what race both parties are of starting with psychic and human in Bad Vibrations to two humans in Desert Hearts to a Nord and a human/Nord mixture in Bad Vibrations to a human/hybrid mix and a hybrid in Star Crossed. I think the race of the two protagonists in and of itself was enough to create a completely different story line for each of the books, but there is a distinct passage of time and furthering of the overall plot of the series with each book. While the protagonists are never of the same race, the situations are never even remotely similar. I really enjoyed Grace and Logan's story. Having read Falling Angels prior to reading the first four books in the series, I had a lot of questions about Logan and exactly who he is. Having read this book gives me an even larger appreciation for Logan's role (and Grace's stubbornness) in book 5. While neither Logan nor Grace face a life-threatening situation in this book, they face the biggest impediment to their relationship than any of the couples have faced thus far: the nature of Logan's creation. The book absolutely concludes with a HEA ending for Logan and Grace. While there is no cliffhanger where their story is involved, I believe this book does still end in a cliffhanger (more than any of the others). Rest assured, however, that you will immediately find out the meaning behind the images the group saw on the TV as well as the ominous words from their visitor nearly right away in book 5. I'd say I can't wait to read book 5, but I already have. So now I suppose I just have to resign myself to waiting for book 6! (And I can't promise I'll be waiting at all patiently, haha.) This is through and through an excellent series that I would most definitely recommend.

It’s Christmas and Grace is on her way home to Sedona. It's been 25 years since THEY left and Grace is all grown up. She is the alien human hybrid child of Kara and Greyson. She now has siblings from Kara and Lance but she has never really been able to accept Lance as her dad and always feels disconnected from her family. She never really opens herself up in her relationships cause how would they react if they found out what she was?

Her father sacrificed himself to save her mother and her friends at the base near Sedona. So why does she now have an overwhelming urge to go to the base? She finds a pod with a male inside. She knows its madness but she opens the pod just before it fails and takes the male home with her. They figure out that he was a prototype for another version of a hybrid super-soldier, since her fathers version was deemed flawed. Now named Logan he and Grace slip into an easy relationship, there is such a strong attraction. They do not admit what he is to her family as she knows the reaction they would get.

But when the psychics in the family admit they know what Logan is they have to begin investigating what Logan is there for and if he poses a threat to them and Grace in particular. Will she lead herself to heartbreak or can Logan heal the rift between the group?

A fantastic addition to the series. I did feel a bit distant from Grace at the beginning as she just seemed such an ungrateful brat - Lance is the only father she has known and she admits that he hasn't shown favouritism towards his natural kids but she still feels distant from him. But as the book unfolded I got what she felt that way. I loved the book and I really hope that there will be more from this series!!!
