"I'm a non-fiction author and project editor (plus I do a bit of journalism). I'm available for project development, writing, project management and I also work as a packager. Click on the links above to see examples of my work.
But first some background: Over the last 20 years, I've written books, magazine and newspaper articles, for online and for television. I get to write about a wide range of subjects, everything from axolotls to zoroastrianism. However, my specialties are natural history, technology and all things scientific. I've worked on projects with Brian May, Patrick Moore, Marcus de Sautoy and Carol Vorderman and for major international publishers, such as Dorling Kindersley, National Geographic, Scholastic, Hachette, Facts on File and BBC Magazines.
I spend my days finding fun ways of communicating all kinds of facts, new and old, to every age group and reading ability. I live in Bristol, England, with my wife and three children. I studied zoology at Bristol University and have had spells working at the zoos in Jersey and Surrey. I used to be something of a conservationist, which included planting trees in Somerset, surveying Vietnamese jungle and rescuing buffaloes from drought-ridden Zimbabwe. Writing jobs have also taken me to the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, the coral reefs of Indonesia and the Sahara Desert. Nowadays, I can be found mainly in the attic." ~http://tomjackson.weebly.com/
The Magic school bus book about volcanoes and earthquakes was very informational. Of all the information books about volcanoes this had the most facts and was easiest and most fun to read. It had facts about the different types of volcanoes, other types of phenomena that happen in areas where there are volcanoes, and even extra information about the experts who study volcanoes, the rocks, and what kinds of things happen under our feet. I really enjoyed reading this book, and it was fun to read. I really liked how just about every page had the same format. There was the quick read information that had the largest text size to grab the readers attention, then there was framed text with comments from Ms. Frizzle, and her students with more facts. One thing I really liked was the small paper that was meant to represent a report written by one of Ms. Frizzle’s students. There were also captions that were accompanied by good pictures, and the whole cartoon aspect brings the book to life, so it is almost like you are watching an episode of The Magic School Bus.
Originally posted on Creative Madness Mama. Now from my youth, there was no science if it wasn't enriched by the Magic School Bus! Now, there are non-fiction readers to go along!! I've bought every one I've found as they've been published. In the same fun format, but with much much more scientific reference details for your little learners.
Fits very nicely into our sixth grade unit on volcanoes. It's a nice book for struggling students or ELA students. Fantastic pictures, manageable text and attractive design.
This book was able to touch briefly on many topics related to volcanoes and earthquakes, such as types of volcanoes, geysers, tsunamis, extinct and dormant volcanoes, and even volcanoes on Mars and the Moon! It is a very quick read but will introduce the child to the topics that interest them so that they may explore further.
