No one Well, I just got laid off. I better marry a demon lord.
Tia Oliver was right on track with life until she hit the final boss of all layoffs. Now she has to leave her high-paying job in Washington, DC, and move back to her hometown of Pretty, VA. This was not in the plans, and it’s putting stress on her long-term relationship with her man. Moving back home could have been a fresh start for her, but it would seem the universe wasn’t done with her yet. To make matters worse, a demon creature is after her and has threatened to destroy her hometown—wait back up? You heard that right, and demon daddy is asking for more than just her soul.
Evil Pumpkins, nasty demons, and a whole lot of time on job boards would be anybody's hell, but Tia is the only one who can make this right.
I loved this novella so much! The author is a mutual on TikTok and when she pitched the premise of it, I thought it would be a fun, quick read before Halloween. This was such a treat, and I was invested from the beginning. Tia is a young woman who gets laid off from her fresh-out-of college job. After months of looking in the DC area for a new one, Tia and her boyfriend Henry are forced to move to her small hometown of Pretty, Virginia, which is about an hour away from Richmond. Henry, a dental hygienist, commutes between Richmond and Pretty and there is some tension building in their relationship. Tia is really trying hard to find and keep a job, but then she starts getting weird dreams about a demon.
One day a little pumpkin creature, with the body the size of a small child, and a jack-o-lantern head, pops up in the house Tia is staying in in Pretty. I was kind of envisioning Over the Garden Wall creatures. Pumpkin reveals a generational curse, so Tia now has that going for her. This was quick, fun, and hilarious. I highly recommend it as a Halloween read. Romance is not usually my favorite genre, but this had just enough cozy horror elements to keep me entertained.
The main character, Tia, is very relatable. She's a woman who lost her job and finds herself relying on her live-in boyfriend. The fantasy and character development are great. I wanted Tia to succeed in life and dealing with the fantasy elements of the story. I read this in 2 days it was so enjoyable.
If you want a enjoyable, read you can finish over the weekend, this book is for you!
