Nightflower is the 1st book in The Coven of the Bond Series by Ethan Lee. This is Ethan Lee's debut novel and I have to say that this book blew me out of the water and I will be adding this book to my trophy shelf and I can't wait to get my hands on the next instalment.
From the first moment you start reading Nightflower Ethan pulls you into this world that you can fell shivers with all the tension, magic, and danger you would expect. While Nightflower isn't quite a fantasy, it does border on fantasy and still beats with all the raw power, the sting of betrayal, and leaves you with a burning need for vengeance. This is a story told in 575 pages of non-stop pacing, ancient pacts, characters who aren't just struggling to survive, they are clawing their way out of the darkness and into the light.
Caya's journey is absolutely visceral. She starts off in this cell, surrounded by dark walls keeping her in this oppressive darkness – the air is stale and hard to breath, feel the chains the wrap around her, taste the rot of the cells, but beneath it all you can feel Caya's defiance and refusal to give up, you can feel that even in the midst of all this darkness where there should be no hope, Caya's hope is still flickering like a candle in the darkest night.
The opening prologue, that prologue alone sets up the story, sets up all the stakes, showing us just how high the stakes really are and the prologue also sets the momentum of the entire story and from here the prologue never once lets up.
The magic the Ethan creates for Nightflower is so unique and yet dangerous and I just loved it. The magic is unpredictable, it has a cost to cast, and it is woven into the very character who is casting it, and it's woven into the characters flaws, desires and very passions.
Lets talk about our villains for a minute. Enemies are never just simply our villains. Some of our villains are actually allies who are spies in disguise, others are going to betray you when you have your back turned and your not expecting it. You never know who you can truly trust and who is truly a villain.
I loved the world-building that Ethan took the time to build for Nightflower. It's rich and gothic: we have pacts that have been made, curses that have been cast, there are supernatural bonds, the very architecture of this world is made up of the betrayal's that have already happened and that are going to happen. With all the layers of power that have been included make you feel that the consequences of every choice is heavier then first realized.
Ethan did a masterful job maintaining the pacing of this story layering in suspense, betrayal, and heartbreak. And just when we think things can't get in any worse, he adds in more betrayal, an arc break, another alliance shift – and then to just amp up the tension he'll add in a twists or a moment of emotional clarity that can both cut and uplift. Nightflower is going to see friendships be tested, vengeance come at a great cost that you may not want to pay, and trust will become the most dangerous gable you could ever take. And yet, you see among the darkest shadows, there are these moments of kindness, loyalty, and there are sacrifices that glow brighter in those moments for what they represent.
You can't deny that there are layer on top of layers in this book and that there are more villains, secrets, and secret pacts that there are moments that it can all feel like it's too much. And I am sure there are going to be times and even moments that you'll wish there were more times where you could just stop and breath before you were caught in the next storm. But, that's part of what makes Nightflower so powerful, its pacing and the speed at which it moves.
Nightflower was masterfully written and is this dark gothic fantasy that's thrilling, dangerous, and will keep your pulse pounding till the very end and I found this book to be so very satisfying.
I have to say that if you enjoy stories where the magic you cast comes with a cost, alliances are sitting on a knifes edge, your protagonists are facing external and internal shadows then this is the book for you.
Ethan Lee has given us a masterclass in creating a world that will haunt you and live rent free in your head and for me, I can't wait to read the next book in the Coven of the Bond Series.
