Izzy's Story: Bermuda (

Rate this book
My sister promised to take me on an unforgettable summer vacation.
I didn’t realize she meant a trip to the seventeenth century.

Izzy St. Germaine is an overachiever with a charmed life – privileged, polished, and perfectly on track. When her adoptive sister, Anne, invites her along for a Sisterly Summer at Sea, it feels like the break she’s long overdue for.

There’s just one little thing. Anne, who has been living a double life as a time traveler, doesn’t mention that their true destination is Somers Isles, 1649.

Thrust into a world straight from her beloved historical romance novels, Izzy takes on the alias and persona of the silken-clad Lady Isabelle, her only protection in a world of slavers and brigands.

Join Izzy on a (mostly) light hearted romp through the Renaissance as she uses her modern knowledge to navigate a world of corsets, seventeenth century table manners, and flirting – all while unearthing Anne’s secrets and connections to the past.

Izzy’s Bermuda follows Izzy’s side of this epic tale.

This is Izzy's Story: Bermuda by V. Yospe! There are spoilers about the love interest from what I've read so far, so please be aware of that while reading this post.

Izzy is funny and relatable and it is fun to see the world through her eyes. She is curious and her inner voice is SO REAL! A quote I like: "Excuse the fuck out of me for not wanting you to fall down the steps and fucking die." (Chapter 4) YESSS

I enjoyed Izzy seeing the conditions of the men and how the environment didn't match up to the sanitary conditions of the present twenty-first century. That beginning was realistic and delightful.

The love interest is a lieutenant commander and he's a white man. Here's what Izzy thinks of him around the beginning: "He was the lieutenant commander. I didn't know shit about how the military worked, but I did know that they were usually responsible for maintaining order and stuff." After a few more chapters, I decided to pause my reading of this novel. Izzy does not know much about the military and that's okay, because at that point in the story, I assume she will learn more about the function of military organizations, and white military forces, who have committed imperial and colonial violence, as that violence is deeply tied to the concept of the military. I assume that commentary and/or criticism of military organizations might come up in the story, not as a large plot thread, but just a mention. However, I do not know if she learns more about the military or if there's criticism about the military because I am pausing my reading. It's hard for me to read a book where the love interest is a military man and he's white. This story is set in 1649. Throughout history, white imperial and colonial and military forces have brutalized people of color and other marginalized people. I am doing a project on military troops who have committed war crimes, and right now it's hard to separate my perception of military organizations, especially military organizations which uphold white supremacy, from my perception of the love interest who is a lieutenant commander.

To other readers, please don't take my review the wrong way. I am expressing my opinion about a love interest who is a military man and who is white, and the fact that white men who were/are soldiers have, throughout history, brutalized entire peoples and cultures and communities, and are as we speak. I am expressing that it is difficult for me to separate that from the love interest. He is also British and the British have indeed committed imperial and colonial violence against people of color, so to reiterate, it is tough for me to continue this story. My ebook copy says I am at 22% and perhaps I will return to it one day, and find out that there is criticism or commentary about this British lieutenant commander, or that Izzy learns more about the violence so often embedded in military forces. I hope others understand where I'm coming from

I will check out future works V. Yospe writes!

Thank you to V. Yospe and J. Flynn for this ARC!

I’d definitely call this book breezy, especially because there are ships involved. While there is some conflict, it generally gets solved quickly and it’s back to your regularly scheduled program of a peek inside life in 1649. Izzy was a fun character for this story - she constantly breaks the fourth wall, which is funny because the author anticipates our reaction and lets us know Izzy is reacting as well. Her reactions were a little puzzling at times (because I thought she should have taken way more issue with a few things, especially in the realm of slavery), but overall she meant well and following her journey was enjoyable. I wish there had been a bit more explanation about time travel and how it worked, but it didn’t impact the story in a major way as almost all of it takes place in 1649. I’m used to reading much darker books so I kept waiting for someone to get betrayed or something majorly awful to happen, but we’re mostly safe in this one! Major nods to the references on Black haircare, especially when it goes from curly to straight and back again.

An Enchanting Read

This book made my heart so happy! The cultural depth was done with such care and respect. The slow burn is slow and tantalizing. Just when you're absolutely done with waiting you get just enough to tide you over! And the payoff? Oh I'm halt to report that it is worth the wait while still being classy and endearing. I had decided at some point but to read Anbe's story because I relate so well to Izzy. However, I think the obviously open ended mysteries will kill me if I don't satisfy the itch. I desperately need a book 2!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Izzy is just such a fun character whose fish-out-of-water quirks as a modern woman in a 17th century world are just delightful. I was chuckling to myself throughout as I read this. If you like unique/fun MCs, time travel, and romance, this one's a great book to pick up.

This was such an easy breezy feel good story with lots of witty banter and a sweet MMC. It’s not necessarily historically accurate but gosh the way it’s written keeps y out engaged.

Perfect Companion to Anne’s Story!

The events marry up well to support what goes on in Anne’s story, leaving no room for discrepancies. The action is fast paced (despite its lengthier page length in contrast to Anne’s story), and has just as much emotional impact as its counterpart.

A reader discretion notice would have been advisable, as the spice is turned up significantly from Anne’s story. This doesn’t happen towards the very end of the story, and while those scenes are indeed a necessary component of the plot, readers who were expecting an equally tame reading as Anne’s story might find it confronting (hence the 4 star instead of 5 star rating).

Despite that, it was a highly enjoyable read, with plenty more laughs and plenty more emotional/sad moments. Overall, looking forward to the next instalment!
