All The Rules I Break

Rate this book
Lena Solis has perfected the art of disappearing—changing her name and her story every few months to escape a past she doesn’t fully understand. Some people go to therapy. Lena just updates her aliases.

When the alluring Kian walks into her bar it sets off a chain of events that threatens to destroy her carefully constructed facade. He makes her an offer she literally can’t refuse—a place at the secretive Sidera Institutione Altiorem Magicae. Which is obviously Latin You pay tuition in trauma.

Tempted by the promise of unlocking family secrets, Lena enters a world ruled by legacy and dangerous magic. There she meets Teariki, a larger-than-life Wolf Shifter; Callum, a quiet and intense Fae; Boden, the golden boy Seraphim; and Nikolai, her stern professor with a lust for blood. Ya know, normal school stuff.

Each carries fragments of a truth Lena was never told, awakening something wild, hungry, and impossible to ignore. Which is totally how Lena feels while watching an episode of her favorite British baking reality TV show.

As she delves deeper into the Institute’s cutthroat world, Lena will have to break every rule she’s sworn to follow—and risk losing herself. Not to be dramatic, but she might also accidentally start a magical turf war. Allegedly.

In a realm where magic is seductive, and secrets are currency, Lena must will she return to the shadows she knows or rise into the power that could consume her. But if she's going down she expects reciprocation.
This is the first book in a queer (LGBTQ+) why-choose fantasy romance series. Expect a sharp-tongued, snarky protagonist, tangled politics, and a love story that refuses to fit into just one box. With a diverse cast of main and side characters, slow-burn tension, and a HEA that will take its time, this series is for fans of Zodiac Academy, A Discovery of Witches, When The Moon Hatched, Bonded by Thorns, and The Bonds That Tie.

Sable Hellebore lives in Wisconsin with her wife, two dogs, and three cats—proudly both a dog and cat person. She writes queer and polyamorous romances set in magical worlds, where the personal is political and every story is rooted in complex character dynamics, queer joy, neurodiversity, disability, and bodily diversity. A sociologist by training, she brings over a decade of experience in academic and non-fiction writing to her fiction. After a spinal injury in 2023 left her with chronic pain, POTs and limited mobility (including the inability to be upright for more than a few minutes), Sable shifted her passions from hiking, gardening, and cooking to creative pursuits she can do from bed: reading, writing, and drawing. She continues to write toward joy, resilience, and the reclamation of life after loss. She’s working toward a better quality of life, one story at a time.

‘𝑰’𝒎 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒇 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒖𝒑 𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒆.’

I haven’t been so pleasantly surprised with a story like this in a good minute. The cover seems cute, and a lil mysterious. The story?! Had my undivided attention with elements I adored!

Academy setting, LOVE
Gothic Romantic Fantasy, LOVE

I adore a gothic read which usually indicates there is a deep emotional element in the story. Yes. This delivered that beautifully. Paired with humorous quotes and lightness in the writing. I really loved it.
So much is happening and still YET to unravel, I love the why choose element, but not neither that has been quite confirmed. When I tell you I inhaled the last 10% of this book. 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Absolutely brilliant balance in writing, lightness to darkness and secrecy.

Thank you for the ebook Nerd Fam + Sable 🖤

I had so much fun reading this book! Yes, it delivers on dark fantasy and romance but it’s also hands down the funniest brooding, dangerous, suspenseful academia I have ever read! Sable Hellebore has created a magical (literally) diverse cast of characters and dynamic relationships that draws you right into the story. Somehow this book provides intense drama, thriller vibes, a great laugh, heat warming moments, and even some very spicy situations in a way that’s entirely fluid and feels as real as the chores I skipped while binging this book. If you enjoy dark academia, you have to read this!

Lena, the main character, has the best sarcastic wit, and dark humor laces her internal dialogue throughout the entire book. She has the most interesting back story that we learn in drips and drops as she navigates an unexpected and forced life change, landing her enrolled in a prestigious college for magical people of all types. From angels to werewolves, this book has all the non-humans you can think of!

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the really fun bartending undercurrent in this story. I’m guessing the author may have experience. There are plenty of drinks to go around and I actually learned of a few cocktails I’d never heard of. It was interesting how the drinks helped to set the character in mind, and to develop the scenes.

The other characters are just as interesting! I don’t know what to say, without giving away spoilers but it’s all very complicated without being confusing and the relationships are constantly evolving. There are characters I loved and some I hated (with good reason), and Lena herself is a kindred spirit. There’s some pretty serious bullying, and Lena handles it masterfully. She has some friends, but struggles to let anyone in, so there’s a constant tension about who can be trusted.

There’s a ton of complex romantic entanglements throughout this story, and Lena has more than one supernatural being vying for her affections. There are strong vibes of “touch her and die,” as well as “what made you this way?” There are also LGB themes in this novel, including at least one “spicy” scene that was pretty high on the taboo scale. If spice isn’t your thing (it’s not mine usually) it was very easy to skip the open-door pages without losing track of the story.

The whole thing ends with a twist I didn’t see coming and I am now experiencing a book-hangover from all this fictional drinks and romantic entanglements. I can’t wait to see what Lena gets up to in the next book, now that she knows herself a little better.

Delicious descriptions fill every page. Each word is carefully chosen, painting the most beautiful and vivid pictures. Fantasy, spice, magic and dark gothic academia come together seamlessly to create a world I longed to dive into and be a part of.

This was my first ‘why choose’ novel, and I loved it. I’m officially a huge fan of this genre!

Lena, the protagonist, is someone I adore and would love to know in real life. Hellebore does an incredible job pulling readers into the narrative, guiding them through every emotion with skill and heart.

You’ll find yourself loving and hating Lena’s choices along the way but will have a fabulous experience getting to know all of the princes.

I’ll share two things about myself as a reader:
1. I read ‘for the vibes.’ If the atmosphere is right, I’m hooked.
2. If I cry at the end of a book because I’m sad it’s over, it’s an automatic 5 stars.

This book hit all the right vibes for me, and by the end, I was a mess on the couch, sobbing while my wife found me there. Hellebore won my heart and I can’t wait for the second book!

This book is so fun and relentlessly engaging. This hits all of my favorite hallmarks of a solid romantasy book, with tons of humor and addictive characters. I seriously still think about these characters on a daily basis, that’s how entertaining they were for me! And the laughs throughout were some of my favorite to date.

I devoured this book. I couldn’t put it down, couldn’t stop guessing the secrets, and absolutely could not stop screaming at my tab like a dramatic Victorian heroine every time a new twist hit me. 😭📱✨
“Who is it?? What is she?? WHAT IS HAPPENING??” became my entire personality for a few hours.

Lena Solis was the kind of heroine who crawled under my skin and refused to leave. 😭🔥 She’d spent her whole life disappearing—new names, new lies, new cities—just to outrun a past she didn’t understand. And honestly? I felt that loneliness in my bones. Then Kian walked into her bar like a walking red flag wrapped in irresistible charm, offering her a place at Sidera Institutione Altiorem Magicae (aka trauma-tuition university 😌📚✨). From that moment onward, I was gone.

The plot was fast-paced, dramatic, emotional, and absolutely addictive. Once Lena stepped into the Institute, the story exploded into a kaleidoscope of magic, legacy, dangerous truths, and a cast of supernatural men who each held a key to her past.
🐺 Teariki — the wolf shifter with larger-than-life energy
🍃 Callum — the sunshine fae golden boy
☀️ Boden — the quiet, brooding seraphim
🩸 Nikolai — the stern vampire professor (my oxygen left the chat)

Every one of them added tension, mystery, and delicious chaos to Lena’s journey. I was rooting for her at EVERY step, especially as she broke every rule she was raised with and stepped straight into her own power.

And the worldbuilding?? Stunning. ✨
Fae, vampires, shifters, sirens, angels—this book threw in everything I love, but somehow it still felt fresh, cleanly built, and deeply immersive. I could SEE the Institute. I could HEAR the lectures. I could FEEL the danger creeping up behind Lena. And honestly? I’d sign up for a course there (minus the murder risk) because the descriptions were that beautiful.

The romance??? 😭🔥
I’m officially obsessed. The tension was slow-burn, the dynamic was balanced, and the chemistry??? Chef’s kiss. I loved watching each character fall for Lena in their own way—and how Lena’s own heart slowly, carefully unfurled after years of hiding.

The ending destroyed me in the most delicious way. 😭💔✨
I was on the edge of my seat, clutching my tab, whispering “no no no WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE BOOK IS OVER?” I cried when it ended—partly because of the cliffhanger, partly because I didn’t want to leave this world yet. That’s an automatic 5 stars from me. 🌙🖤

This book hit every single vibe I crave as a reader:
✨ dark academia magic
✨ queer slow-burn tension
✨ sharp-tongued snark
✨ secrets that unravel you
✨ addictive pacing
✨ humor tucked between heartbreak
✨ an atmosphere thick enough to drown in

It was everything I love about fantasy romance — wild, emotional, dangerous, seductive, funny, and magical in all the right ways.

Tropes & Vibes 🖤🔥✨
💫 Why Choose / Reverse Harem
🏫 Secret Magic Academy
🤪 Snarky, chaotic heroine
💕 Found Family
🕊️ Hidden identity / hidden past
🌶️ Slow-burn spice
👑 Supernatural politics
😈🧚‍♂️😇🩸 Monsters, fae, angels, vampires & more
😭✨“I shouldn’t want you but I absolutely do” tension
🌙📚 Dark academia atmospheres

A massive thank you to Sable Hellebore and The Nerd Fam for the ARC opportunity. ❤️
I’m already counting the days until book two — because Lena’s story? It’s nowhere near done, and neither is my obsession. 🖤✨

I just finished this and I devoured it. I got this as an e-ARC from NerdFam and I am so grateful for it. Sable Hellebore crafted an amazing new world with intrigue, comedy, and a bad*ss FMC. Lena has been thru some stuff. She has lived the life of a nomad and has suffered a lot of loss. She is been collected by a group of highly attractive men and given an ultimatum to enroll in a university. However Lena has lived a human life but is now being told she isn’t human at all. She now has to go to a Magicae university. It was so great learning this world right a long with Lena. She is very sassy and never gives up. I could not stop reading. The ending of this book definitely keeps you wanting more and I cannot wait for more. Highly recommend!

I love a good fantasy novel and this one checked all my must-have boxes! I'm always on the hunt for something spicy, fast-paced, and full of high-stakes drama that still manages to be cheeky and fun.

I absolutely loved the snarky, quick-witted, and resilient main character, Lena. We follow her as she breaks the strict rules she’s always lived by and gets thrown into a world of magic she never imagined existed. I rooted for her at every trial she faced and loved how she kept her head held high and powered through everything she had to endure.

The world-building here is a true standout because the author threw in EVERYTHING I love in fantasy—from Fae, werewolves, vampires, sirens, and angels and so many more. What's truly unique is how intricately the author lays out the details of this complex world and its variety of inhabitants in a way that's so fresh and fantastic - I'd sign up for a course on this realm any day with how beautiful descriptive the author made it.

And for the romance fans, the author incorporates multiple love interests who fall for Lena, and the "why choose" dynamic is handled perfectly. It adds a delicious, playful tension that sets this book apart from other academy romances.

That ending! It kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the final page. I’m already desperate to know what Lena does next. Highly recommend this fun, steamy, and addictive read!

Thank you to the Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC. I don’t even know where to start. I feel so lucky to have received an ARC for All The Rules I Break. If there was a six star option I would give it!

Sable Hellebore created such a breath taking story. This was a fast paced fantasy packed with drama, action, love, spice, betrayal, found family, magic, politics and so much more.

I absolutely devoured this book from page one. I loved the world and academy setting , the unique characteristics and banter of the characters. You can’t help but love Lena, and feel for her with every turn of the page. The multi person points of view help you really engage with each character. I laughed out loud, I held my breath, my heart raced and I shed tears. The plot twists and cliff hangers at the end have me on the edge of me seat for book 2! This was such a fantastic read!

If you’re looking for a book that’s like Zodiac academy but with only one FMC, and all the boys are drawn to her, including a professor, you need to check this book out!

You follow the FMC, who’s grown up running though she’s not sure why in the human world, entirely unaware that there’s a realm filled with magic and she’s not human at all. When she arrives at a school meant to train her on how to unlock her powers, everyone hates her and she has no idea why, but turns out her dad may have killed a lot of people and was just generally a bad dude, but she didn’t know him so why’s that her fault?

I loved watching her slowly learn to trust her new friends and found family after vowing to never make close connections her whole life. I also loved her perseverance and refusing to give up no matter how many people were trying to put her down! There was plenty of tension with multiple love interests and also lots of drama, training and magic that kept everything exciting! I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens in this series! Overall my rating 4.7/5!

Thanks to the author and the nerd fam for the gifted copy, all opinions given are my own!

For starters the cover of this book is STUNNING!! I do in fact choose my books based on the cover 🙈

This book was a ride from the start a witty, sarcastic, badass FMC. Lena is used to a life on the run and has never put her roots down but why (she doesn't even truly know) but those are the rules she was taught growing up. But when Kian "gives her the option" to enroll in a Magical Academy and stop running her life changes in ways she could never imagine.

This story beautifully incorporates all types of fantasy elements that create an enticing and dangerous world. The banter and twists and turns will have you unable to put this book down.

If you love why choose, moody females, dark academia and a wild ride you won't regret picking this book up!

I have just this second, put this book down, and I NEED to share this with the world! I have no words, other than this is the absolute BEST book I've read this year! And what a cliffhanger! I am going to be waiting very impatiently for book number 2!

I don't want to go into too much detail about the book, because I honestly want you to experience it for the first time like I did. No previous context, no spoilers, little information. You will be chewed up, spat out and ripped into little pieces. Then left gasping for more in the last couple of sentences!

Keep an eye out for Sable Hellebore, because she is up there with Sarah J Maas and Rebecca Yarros. What an incredibly talented author! She pulls you right into the world from the get go. Be prepared to put your life on hold for the duration of this book! A million stars from me!

Ninth House meets Red, White, and Royal Blue

All the Rules I Break is the dark academia fantasy (with spice) that I didn’t know I needed. I was hooked by chapter two and had a hard time putting it down. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book trying to figure out a number of mysteries while navigating a ton of plot twists and surprises!

As a nerd for all things fantasy and spooky, I was sucked into the world building done by Hellebore. It was fresh, well-researched, and captivating.

After finishing the book and experiencing Lena withdrawals, I was able to check out Hellebore’s Spotify playlist for AtRIB. It transported me right back to playing chess with a very appealing opponent.

Looking forward to re-reading AtRIB while waiting for the sequel!

Thank you to the Nerd Fam for an ARC of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lena's journey into finding out who she is in a magical world she knows nothing about gave me all of the feels of watching Lost Girl again for the first time and I appreciate that. I will say this leans into bully romance a bit so if you're not into that it's something to be wary of, but it's not nearly as bad as some other bully romances I've read.

That being said, I do think the world building was a little info dump-y towards the beginning as we're learning about the details of how the magical aspects work along with the FMC, but by the end it has you wishing you were a part of it. I cannot wait for the second one.

I love a good fantasy novel, and this one checked all my boxes! It’s spicy, fast-paced, and packed with high-stakes drama while still being cheeky and fun. Lena, the snarky and resilient main character, completely won me over as she broke the rules and dove headfirst into a world of unexpected magic. The world-building is incredible! The multiple love interests and the perfectly balanced “why choose” dynamic add just the right amount of tension and fun. And that ending? Absolutely wild. I was on the edge of my seat and already can’t wait to see what Lena does next. A fun, steamy, and addictive fantasy read that I highly recommend!

This book isn’t one of my usual genres—not something I’d lazily pluck from my comfort zone—but over the past year, I’ve been trying to punch out of my weight class, break my static mold, explore new worlds, and boldly go, as they say.

Lena Solis doesn’t do therapy like the protagonists in most of my go-to reads—she does aliases. And in All the Rules I Break, that habit of disappearing gets tested hard when a striking stranger offers her a place where she might finally belong: a magical institution that’s equal parts trauma factory and legacy playground.

This book hooked me pretty much from the start. I cannot abide stories that don’t feel real—dialogue that’s forced, characters that move like puppets, worlds that don’t breathe. Thankfully, none of that is here. The magic systems are layered and intriguing, the characters are messy in the best way, and the slow-burn tension? Worth every page. Lena’s voice is sharp, funny, and painfully relatable—especially if you’ve ever tried to outrun your own story. And really, who hasn’t?

The romance style—“why-choose”—was new to me, and the spice level? Let’s just say it’s not shy. There’s heat, banter, and emotional depth that sneaks up on you. You’ll meet a cast of characters who each own their ownness, and a professor who not only has a thing for blood—he had me from the get-go.

What really stands out is the heart behind the story. Sable Hellebore writes with lived experience—and it shows. Lena’s journey feels personal, raw, and real. You can tell this book was written from a place of resilience and reclamation, as well as imagination.

I’m seriously counting down to book two.

Just wow
I'm so confused! But in a very satisfying way.
It's a very pleasant teasing but I cannot wait for the next book!
Lena is an orphan and recently her brother died, so she's all alone, tending bar in Portland. She's actually ready to take off again- one of her brother's rules is to not stay in one place too long- when some intense, intelligent and intensely attractive men show up to first save her life and then offer her a new one.
Before Lena realizes what's happening, she's whisked across country to New Hampshire and to a very posh graduate school for the magically gifted.
She meets vampires and shifters and fallen angels, but most seem to DESPISE her- for reasons she both had no control over and cannot run from.
This book grabbed me by the throat and soon I was neglecting my laundry and meals to finish it!
If you like Zodiac Academy but also When the Moon Hatched, somehow, this is right up your alley!
Spicy with a pretty detailed trigger warning section, it'll keep your attention! I'm so grateful to have been gifted the arc from nerd family because this book is one I would not have wanted to miss!

All the Rules I Break was one of my favorite reads this year. Lena is so sassy and self assured on the outside, but her internal insecurities make her a well rounded character. The Princes are all intriguing and leave you wanting more of their POV.

Lena is a normal woman…for the most part. She has been following a set of rules her brother taught her to stay one step ahead of the people who are hunting her family. New names and new cities every six months had been her life for years. Her brother’s death has left a whole in her life and she finds it harder to leave this time.

A handsome stranger walks into the bar she is working and changes her life forever. She is not human, but Magicae and she has been accepted into the most elite school in the realm.

Lena doesn’t know anything about her past. Once she arrives at school she realizes that not everyone is pleased to see another Solis enrolled.

I loved the magic system and world building . The multiple POVs help keep the story moving and kept my attention throughout. If you like Dark Academia and a bit of a mustery, this book is for you!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.25 stars)

All the Rules I Break by Sable Hellebore

This book was such a wild, magical ride — a perfect blend of mystery, found family, and chaotic supernatural energy. The story weaves together fae, shifters, seraphim, and even a bloodthirsty professor (yep 👀) in a world that’s equal parts dangerous and alluring.

Lena Solis is a master at disappearing, changing names and stories to escape a past she can’t quite remember. But when Kian offers her a spot at a secret magical academy, she’s thrown into a deadly game of power, legacy, and secrets that could unravel everything she’s built.

This one is full of twists, sharp banter, and a heroine who’s equal parts broken and bold. And let’s be real — the “trauma as tuition” tagline? Perfection.

If you love magical academies, morally gray characters, and stories where nothing is as it seems, this is one to add to your list.

I had a hard time rating this book, because yes I enjoyed it, and it kept me engaged and interested. At what point though is it taking it a little too far drawing inspiration from another book/series. The parallels to ZA, were almost a bit too much. Before I get into that though, I will say the characters were much more likable, especially the MMCs, this book does have bullying, especially by one of MMCs, but nowhere near what ZA had. The plot twist at the end was also fantastic, and definitely made me excited for book 2.

However, the amount of ZA parallels this book contains almost makes it feel like a fanfic, making it a why choose, with the authors own twists thrown in. Just as a few examples in a long list..

•FMC doesn’t know who her parents are
•MMCs show up telling her she has magic, and take her to a magical academy
•A vampire professor that’s definitely giving Orion, book and bourbon obsession to boot
•A quirky shifter that gives all the Seth vibes, who also happens to be in a forbidden relationship with CAL (another heir)
FMC who can burn through compulsion w/o even realizing it
•Heirs that have regents while they finish school, who think she’s out to take one of their thrones
•bullying that results in her winding up nude in public
•FMC get shoved into a body of water
•Kitra = Kylie Majors

That is just to name a few, while like I said I enjoyed this book, the similarities literally smacked me in the face. I will say I think this book will resonate well with the readers that want to experience a book like ZA without the excessive bullying, and much more like-able MMCs, and those that wish ZA was a why choose.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

"Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted eARC. This was a fast paced, spicy fantasy read. The FMC has a rule that she doesn't stay in any place longer than a set time frame. What happens when she breaks the rule? Mayhem, true identity and love interests make this a great start to this fantasy series.

This was one of those books that kept me up reading way too late because I didn’t want to put it down! The flow and pacing of the book is excellent, and I immediately felt drawn into the story. This is a fantasy story set in the modern world which I enjoyed. Most of the story takes place at an institute for students with magical abilities. I love a good academia setting!

I instantly knew I was going to love the FMC, Lena. She has a sharp whit and is sarcastic is a fun and charming way. Her inner dialogue was the best. Because she was unaware of the magical world, she is learning about the history and various houses of Sidera right along with the reader which was helpful to understanding the different characters and their abilities. She does endure a bunch of bullying due to her family name which only made me want to root for her that much more.

There are a whole bunch of MMCs in this story. Whether you like a golden retriever wolf shifter or a broody vampire professor, there is an MMC for you! I personally will take them all (except maybe Boden). Lots is delicious flirting and tension throughout.

There are so many mysteries and secrets that slowly unravel in this book. The ending has me desperately wanting book two asap! Thank you to the NerdFam for providing me a copy of this book!

I loved this book! Once I started reading I just couldn’t put it down, I stayed up til 2am reading it. The world building and magic system is so interesting and I love all the bits and pieces. Our FMC is both a mystery to the reader and herself as you both learn more along the way. There’s an enemies to lovers vibe with a slow burn. The burn doesn’t get going til the end but I was hooked when it did. This is a book that has lgbtq+ themes and the men are scorching! It ends on a cliff hanger that just leaves you begging for more! I can’t wait to read book 2! Defintely a new favorite author of mine

I had a really hard time picking a rating for this book.
I was super invested and was able to just sit down and DEVOUR this book. The writing was so well done; however I am settling on a 3.75.
My reasons were mentioned in another review as well, that I felt like this could have been a Zodiac Academy fanfiction.
This was like a mashup of ZA and Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac.
For example, I had an entire page of parallels listed.

-FMC not knowing her parents. (ZA)
-MMC’s retrieve her and explain that she has magic and take her to an academy. (ZA)
-FMC has a “deceased” brother she is mourning and looking for answers to. (RB)
-A lion shifter who plays a star role on the school sports team. (RB)
-Grumpy vampire professor with a love for bourbon and books. (ZA)
-Said grumpy vampire professor begins to do one on one liaison lessons to help her discover her origins. (ZA)
-A board that ranks your order based on combat & power. (RB)
-FMC thrown into a body of water. (ZA)
-FMC has a bully event leaving her nude in Public. (ZA & RB)
-Wolf shifter who is the comedic relief is in love with Cal….. (self explanatory).
-Kitra = Kiley Majors. (ZA)
-FMC powers can burn through compulsion. (ZA)
-MMCs have a plan at the beginning to run her off to prevent her from challenging their power to rule…. (Self explanatory).
& This is not even my complete list… There were more (FMC goes on a date to a party that ends in humiliation).

I will say this FMC gets her ass handed to her A LOT more than the Twisted Sisters FMCs. Almost painful to read.

Now, this book was really good and really enjoyable. I just struggle with the idea of at what point is taking ideas from a book too far? The last 20% was where the plot line got original. And I DO want to know what happens in the second book. However, I felt this could have been a fanfic novel and I would have enjoyed it just the same.

First off, I chose to read this book instead of napping, and that’s a huge compliment.

I honestly thought this was going to be just another overdone “magic school” story. Man, was I wrong.

The world-building takes a bit of time to set up, but it’s done in a way that keeps you fully entertained. The hidden world feels familiar yet refreshingly different, and the author even includes a glossary. It’s a small but brilliant touch that makes a significant difference—especially for readers experiencing brain fog or memory challenges. * raises hand*

Each character brings something unique to the table, making it easy to form emotional connections. I could see bits of myself in almost all of them (except for… well, let’s just say one particular character).

Lena’s bratty humor and pop-culture references are everything I wish I could pull off in social situations. She’s definitely swimming upstream, but at least she gets to have some fun along the way. Heck, she could even make neon look great.

The romance? Slow burn perfection. The spice level? Absolutely on point. The writing and creativity during those moments were a chef’s kiss. I also loved how the queer relationships were handled. They felt natural, fun, and authentic without ever falling into clichés.

I devoured this book in just over a day. Now I’m just sad it’s over, especially since it just came out and I already need book two. Sable established the first book, so the rest of the series has a solid foundation to fly. Just picture a book with wings that's spitting out rainbows and glitter with no regrets.

For the record, I’m not an ARC reader. I’ve been eagerly waiting for release day ever since I stumbled upon All the Rules I Break on BlueSky and TikTok.

This is Sable Hellebore’s debut novel, but you’d never guess it. The writing is smooth, polished, and free of the rough edges typically found in first releases. I’ve read some truly painful debut edits before, and this isn’t one of them. The pacing, tone, and polish all suggest someone who’s been writing for years. I look forward to seeing what they do next.

And one final note: If anything bad ever happens to Callum, I will be extremely upset. This beautiful creature must be protected at all costs. If not… IMA BE BIG MAD.

Review: All the Rules I Break by Sable Hellebore
⭐️ 4.25/5 stars

When I requested All the Rules I Break, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting what I got. The cover completely fooled me (in the best way). I went in thinking I was getting something cozy and light, because yes, I’m absolutely a sucker for a gorgeous cover. Instead, I got a fast-paced, witty, emotionally charged story that hooked me from page one. I devoured it in less than a day and enjoyed every single minute.

Lena is such a standout FMC. She strikes the perfect balance between tough-as-nails and deeply vulnerable, with just the right amount of snark to make her feel real. Best of all, she’s not one of those “too stupid to live” heroines, thank you, Sable Hellebore, for that gift! I rooted for her the whole way through.

Now, let’s talk about the guys. They’re an interesting mix, and while they didn’t all win me over immediately, they’re definitely growing on me. Cal stole my heart right away (no surprise there), and I have a feeling he and Ariki are going to be my top favorites as the series continues. Kian and Nik? I can tolerate them for now we will see how they step up for our girl. And Boden… well, he has some serious character growth ahead of him, and I can’t wait to see how that unfolds.

Here’s the twist, I’m not usually a fan of “why choose” stories, and I had no idea this book leaned that way. Once again, my cover-based decision-making led me into the grey. But honestly? I’m so glad it did. This story is so engaging, and Lena is such a compelling main character, that I’d happily tolerate tropes I don’t normally go for just to keep following her journey.

And that last chapter? Sable, what are you doing to me? That ending left me completely addicted and desperate for the next installment.

Thank you so much to The Nerd Fam for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this world.

Thank you to NerdFam for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I went into this one really excited - the cover is absolutely gorgeous, and I could tell the author poured a lot of passion into creating this world. Unfortunately, it just didn't click for me.

The premise sounded promising: Lena Solis has spent her life disappearing, changing identities to escape a past she doesn't understand. When she's offered a spot at a secret magical academy, she's thrown into a world of shifters, fae, vampires, and dangerous secrets. It should have been right up my alley, but I struggled to stay engaged.

The characters didn't grab me. Lena's sarcastic voice worked for some readers, but I had trouble connecting with her. The love interests - Teariki the wolf shifter, Callum the fae, Boden the seraphim, Nikolai the vampire professor - all felt like archetypes I've seen before. I wanted to care about them, but I just couldn't get invested.

The story itself felt familiar in ways that made it hard to stay interested. The magical academy setting, the bullying, the "girl discovers she has secret powers" plot - it's all been done many times, and this didn't offer enough that felt fresh or unique to pull me through. The pacing dragged for me, and I found myself losing interest rather than being pulled forward by the story.

I do want to emphasize that I appreciate the work that went into this. The cover art is stunning, and I can tell the author put real passion into building this world and these characters. This clearly resonates with a lot of readers based on other reviews, so it might just be a case of wrong book, wrong time for me.

All The Rules I Break

This book—wow! I could gush for days, but I’ll spare you the novel-length ramble. The female lead? Utterly relatable—I slipped into her shoes like they were custom-made. She’s feisty, funny, and full of heart, with a curiosity that’s practically contagious. You just feel her hunger to understand the worlds and people around her… even when she’s left in the dark.

And Sable? Oh, she’s sneaky—in the best way. She drops juicy story bits through other characters’ eyes, so you’re constantly piecing things together like a delicious puzzle. The result? You’ll be flipping pages like your life depends on it. I tore through book one in record time… and I wouldn’t be surprised if you beat me to the finish line.

Spice? Let's not forget about that in this book. Oh honey, this book is practically a five-alarm fire 🔥. I’m talking 5 out of 5 chili peppers—no hesitation. Sable doesn’t just write chemistry; she engineers it. The characters are magnetic, their backstories are deliciously tangled, and the banter? Whew. It’s the kind that makes you smirk, blush, and maybe fan yourself a little.
Every scene crackles with tension and heat, and when things finally ignite… let’s just say I was clutching my metaphorical pearls and loving every second. All the Rules I Break doesn’t just bring the spice—it brings the whole damn spice rack, and I am absolutely here for it.
