When popular author John Ryland was invited to discuss the profession of writing with an Alabama high school class, a group of students expressed eagerness to put their own creativity into print. Out of this was born The Ballad of Saints and Sinners written by six youth authors, Kayla McKenzie, Alexx Phoenixx, Derek Pierce, Xander Scott, Free Spirit, Gabriel Williamson and their teacher, Ms. Lisa Ann Posey. Poems, raw with adolescent emotions and searching questions abound. Relationship joy and loss, difficult past life experiences, self esteem struggles and the quest for identity exude the courage of these teenagers allowing themselves to become vulnerable in print. There are also three short stories which echo themes of loss, hard times, good and bad choices and the importance of love and family. Illustrations by Kayla McKenzie (including the book cover) are also included in this anthology. This book offers a window into the minds and hearts of adolescents, a reminder for some of us and a validation for youthful readers.
