Target Acquired

Rate this book
FBI Special Agent Erin Drake chases killers, but never one like Wraith.

Wraith is something else—an executioner who turns victims’ daily routines into perfectly timed death traps.

No bullets.

No blood.

No Trace.

Just sudden, inexplicable “natural” deaths—without a shred of evidence they were murders.

When Drake intercepts part of Wraith’s next kill order, she joins forces with rogue cyber analyst Ethan Reid to stop Wraith.

Their prove Wraith is real before they vanish again.

But the closer they get, the deeper they sink into a world where predators live in digital shadows, fortunes move through the dark web, and nothing—online or off—is what it seems.

Meanwhile Wraith studies them, mirroring their moves, predicting their choices, folding them into their deadly timetable.

In a game where the next target could be anyone, the only way to catch Wraith…

Is to become unpredictable.

Elias Ashcroft has become one of my new favorite authors. His books are all stand alone thrillers that show how heavily relying on technology for everything can be used against society.

FBI agent tries to capture digital actor who tracks and kills her victims - 4 stars

FBI agent Erin Drake and FBI cyber security expert Ethan Reid form a team to investigate what appears to be a number of healthy people dying unexpectedly. Foul play is determined to be likely using sophisticated electronic tracking and a classified poison delivery methodology. Electronic trails have been completely erased or concealed by splicing/removing surveillance videos a few seconds before each victim died. In many instances, there have been active electronic activities after death with the same electronic identity of the decedent.

The killer calls herself Wraith. She manages to elude detection. As different tracking techniques are used, Wraith seems to be far faster and more skilled than the FBI experts. Rather than make their suspicions known, FBI leadership wants to keep the kill capability quiet until the FBI can prosecute an ironclad case.

Stay with the investigators, victims, and occasionally even Wraith as the cat and mouse game picks up. It takes a lot of time and effort to build a trap and lure Wraith. The FBI had to change its approach in trying to get Wraith to slip up.

Readers with a technical background might find some of the technology a bit repetitive. Nontechnical people may find references to smells, sound and differentiation between connected vs isolated networks. Clearly, Wraith is a sophisticated killer for hire. She has mastered several technologies and has excelled in staying one step or more ahead of the authorities.

The game won't be over until Wraith leaves incriminating evidence with which she can be prosecuted. Can she keep it up -- she has been doing it all her life!

This is an edge of your seat, cat and mouse thriller that grabs you and holds you until the end. Although there is a lot of technical jargon, the thrilling nature of the hunt keeps you engaged. FBI agent, Erin Drake with the help of Ethan, an IT specialist is in a hunt for the elusive Wraith who uses technology to make his kills look like natural deaths. Dealing with skepticism about the existence of the Wraith, Erin with Ethan's help has to find the Wraith before he strikes again. Or does the Wraith have them in his sites next? This is a page turning book that keeps you so engaged until the very end. I highly recommend this book if you like page turning thriller dealing with the tech world. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

This is a hard but very interesting read. There are a lot of technical terms which non-IT readers will find difficult but if you focus on the storyline and don't let the terms distract you, it is an excellent book. It also makes you think about your own habits and how predictable you are. The trail has many twists and turns and the end has a very unexpected twist. I recommend this book to anyone who want to read a very good IT-based hunt for an invisible assassin. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This book started with the unexpected death of FBI agent Langford. His death was ruled a heart attack, but his medical history lacked any signs of symptoms leading to a heart attack, yet no trace of anything else. This man was targeted by man on the dark web paid to execute him. Now, it’s up to two agents to use the dark web to solve the case. The book is fast paced, and the perfect book to get cozy with a cup of tea. 4 stars for me only because I would’ve liked the story to be longer with more details. Other than that, I enjoyed this short read!

This is a gripping and unique tech-thriller. FBI Agent Erin Drake is on the hunt for a killer known as "Wraith," who uses technology to orchestrate untraceable deaths. The genius of the book lies in its ability to make you think about your own daily habits and how predictable you are. It's a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game with a completely unexpected twist at the end. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a smart, suspenseful hunt. I received an advance copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Whilst it is a unique tech thriller I felt it needed something more. For me there wasn’t quiet enough detail for the characters. It was interesting though how the assassin used tech in this thriller to predict the movements of the marks it really does bring into question your own habits and how predictable we all are.

I received this as an e-arc and this is my honest opinion.

An intriguing and unique tech thriller. Murders are happen but they appear to die of natural causes without any clues left behind. However, an FBI agent is after a killer known as the Wraith. No one believes he exists. She finds help in the form of a rouge analyst to prove that the Wraith exists and stop the murders. Now they are on his radar. Will they get him before he murders them? I couldn’t put this book down. It is fast paced and action packed. The concept of the book is fresh. I’m sure we will see more technology type books coming out in the near future.

I could not finish this book, not because it wasn’t great though! I made it about halfway and it was truly amazing. The detail, the writing, loved it. My problem was that it was about the dark web and navigating through it. There were a lot of terms related to this that I just did not follow, leaving me confused too much about what the characters were doing. This is knowledge way above my comprehension

Too many technicalities make the book difficult to read for those of us who are not at the cutting edge of computer science. In addition, the book has a ChatGPT feel to it, which makes it even harder to get into. The premise of the plot is great, though.

This is an interesting suspenseful tech-thriller. There are a lot of technical terms with the navigation of the dark web. There’s twists and turns in the IT-based hunt for an invisible assassin Wraith. FBI Agent Erin Drake uses technology with the help of Ethan. There’s surprises too.

A number of murders made to look like natural deaths without leaving any clues. FBI agent Erin Drake teams up with an IT specialist to try to find out who is responsible. She is looking for someone called Wraith. Always one step ahead.

I liked how this felt like modern day bureaucratic bs. The big guys acting like they know more than the ones with the intelligence “the little” people.

Ethan and Erin make a great team. I hope to read more about those two and what they accomplish in the future together.
