Emmery’s life ended the night her sister died. Now, all she has left is a reckless plan and a condemning flame that shouldn’t exist. If the gods won’t return what was stolen, she’ll defy them herself—even if it damns her soul.
Then there’s Vesper. Sharp-edged, secretive, and dangerous, he’s the last man she should trust. Yet he’s the one who saves her when the shadows close in. The one who sees her broken pieces and doesn’t look away.
But Emmery’s dreams belong to someone else—a haunting green-eyed stranger who claims her heart under moonlight. And beyond him a slew of enemies watch … waiting for their chance to claim her fate.
Caught between betrayal and desire, vengeance and love, Emmery must decide who she truly the cursed girl the world fears, or the spark that ignites hope.
Perfect for fans of obsessive antiheroes, ruthless bonds, and heroines who claw their way out of despair, The Spark that Ignites will leave you breathless, broken, and begging for the next book.
ARC Review – The Spark That Ignites by J. E. Storm
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)
This was a beautifully written, immersive fantasy that pulled me in from the very first pages.
Storm’s descriptive writing is her strongest weapon — the way she builds the world, the magic, and the atmosphere makes every scene feel vivid and alive. The mystical elements, the gates, the training, the danger… you don’t just read them, you see them.
The story follows Emmery, a powerful FMC who has been suppressing her magic and carrying the weight of devastating loss — her mother, her sister, and memories she doesn’t fully understand. She’s been wandering alone, disconnected from her past, until she meets Vesper. He promises to help her unlock her magic and reclaim what she’s lost, but only if she helps him gather what he needs to bring his sister back from death.
Their partnership is built on mutual need, not instant trust, which I loved. Watching Emmery slowly learn to access her magic — with Vesper and his companions training alongside her — was incredibly satisfying. The found-family dynamics, the reluctant alliances, and the constant sense of danger kept the story moving at a strong pace.
This is fantasy-first: no spice, heavy world-building, prophecy, gods, fate, and magic that comes at a cost. It’s a slower emotional burn, but never boring — there’s action, fighting, and a steady unraveling of secrets without overwhelming the reader.
If you love: • rich, immersive fantasy worlds • powerful FMCs with suppressed magic • reluctant allies & found family • prophecy, gods, and fate-driven stories
this one is absolutely worth your time. I’m very excited to see where book two takes us.
ARC REVIEW: This autumn is bringing so many incredible books, and The Spark That Ignites is without doubt one of them. What a ride! I’ve been destroyed and remade, trusted and doubted, right alongside Emmery. I have so many questions, so many theories, and I can’t wait for book two to give me the answers. Emmery has a big gap in her memory, one that brings doubt and fear because she can't know what has happened and why, yet she is at the heart of a great prophecy that could change the fate of the world. Within these pages we find magical beings, dragons, talking creatures, a land stripped of its magic, gods trapped or dead, and children destined to be forgotten. This dark fantasy is packed with epic scenes. There’s no romance in sight, but there is a shadowy figure who appears only in Emmery’s dreams. She doesn’t know who he is, perhaps because of the memories she’s lost, and that mystery leaves us just as desperate to uncover the truth as she is. And then there’s the familiar, the sweetest winged fox I desperately wish I could cuddle! This book made me scream, laugh, and ache for Emmery to learn to trust herself, and maybe a few of those around her. But what do I know? There are so many mysteries I’ve lost count. What I do know is this: I am eagerly waiting for book two. And I feel truly honored to have been chosen as an ARC reader for this unforgettable story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am so grateful to have read it as an ARC!
With so many fantasy books out there it's always an exciting moment when the magic system feels truly unique. The descriptions of the use of the magic were also so beautifully presented, I felt like I was present in the moments.
Something else that I loved: the animal companions. I don't think I've read a book with companions and as an animal lover myself it was a nice touch. It felt like having my own little sassy pet along for the read.
The back half of the book had me gasping. I didn't know where to look, when to stop gasping...I mean come on the twists were unexpected! I'm so excited for the next book so I can see where it's headed, I can't wait.
I have not stopped thinking about this book since I finished it! This is such a beautiful and tragic story featuring gods/goddesses, prophecies, found family, forbidden magic and a mysterious romance. This book will make you laugh, make you cry and stay with you long after you’ve finished. I read this as an ARC and I am already begging for the second book! I honestly recommend reading this book as soon as it is released and joining the club desperately waiting for the next one, you will fall in love with it 🖤
Thank you to the author for allowing me to be an ARC reader of this book!
I absolutely loved this book. I found it hard to put down. The characters really spoke to me and I was left guessing what was going to happen next. I loved the twists and turns that the story took and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
I was so happy to find this ARC via another indie author I follow on Instagram, not only did the cover instantly pull me in (in all honestly), after I read the book overview I was instantly like YUP!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book is an incredible read by J.E, its a seriously gripping, heart pounding in your mouth start to an Unforgettable Series (sign me up for them ALL J.E.)
It is seriously, nothing short of an electrifying, emotionally charging adrenaline fueled beginning it had its hooks into me from the first page and even now refuses to let go (gonna be rent free in my brain. In all seriousness J.E. you seriously have a rare gift for crafting your characters every time it just made me feel like they were raw, real, and painfully human, it was done so brilliantly.
One of the standout strengths for me was the character development. Each character is layered with depth, trauma, secrets, and growth that unfolds naturally as the story progresses. You don’t just read about their struggles—you feel them, and oh lord did I feel them (i laughed, i cried) . Their internal battles are so vividly written that you can’t help but root for them with every new challenge that comes their way and every emotional hit. Even the supporting characters are fleshed out with striking personalities and purpose, just adding richness of the world you have brought us into.
Then BAMMM, Just when you think you’ve figured out where the story is heading, there is it is! miss J.E. unleashes an unexpected twist you never see coming (the kind of twist that makes you sit up, reread the page, be like HUH, WHO, WHAT, NOOO, YESS, MAYBE? WHAT? I NEED TO REREAD THIS) Mind blown, and got me fully re-immersed with renewed awe and WAY to much excitement. It was sharp, shocking, and perfectly timed, raising the stakes and cementing (to me) her skill at keeping us on edge. (so mean but awesome and epically done)
The pacing in the book to me was flawless and flowed with such intense action, emotional depth, and the quieter character-driven moments blend seamlessly throughout. J.E’s writing style is punchy yet poetic in a way by delivering some incredible impact without sacrificing beauty in the prose. The tension builds masterfully toward a finale that leaves you breathless.
And THE CLIFFHANGER! OMG. It's a good one. The kind that has your heart in your mouth, your mind racing with questions. Instead of feeling frustrated, you walk away exhilarated, eager to dive straight into the next book. It is still rent free in my head.
So as an overall if that review was to long for you lol. The Spark That Ignites is a phenomenal start to what promises (to me) to be a standout series (no pressure now J.E 🤣) . It’s gripping, emotional, full of surprises, and crafted with exceptional storytelling. If you love intense character plots, explosive twists, and stories that linger with you long after the final page, this book comes highly recommended.
J.E. Storm has lit the spark under my ass and got me out of a serious slump (like 15 "currently reading" kind of slump where nothing hit until this, so prepare to be consumed by the fire.
“Maybe the gods had finally decided she was out of time, and she’d meet her well-deserved end.”
✨ Damned one / forbidden magic ✨ Found family ✨ Touch her and die ✨ Dream-walker love interest ✨ Prophecy & twisted fate
Emmery is raw, angry, and running on grief and spite. She doesn’t believe in mercy, destiny, or gods who listen, and honestly? Fair. The magic inside her is dangerous, unwanted, and absolutely tied to the worst thing she’s ever lost.
“Chosen? Blessing? Gods, no, it was a life sentence. A curse.”
She’s spent her life surviving alone, treating connection like a liability instead of a comfort.
“For all these years she had only had herself and named everyone else an enemy.”
Vesper complicates everything. He saves her life, trains her, protects her, and slowly becomes the one person she doesn’t know how to let go of.
“He’d become her anchor, her lifeboat, her break in the clouds within the storm. But now she was sinking. Drowning all over again.”
And then there’s Shade, the presence in her dreams who feels too intimate to be imaginary. Every interaction with him is heavy with inevitability, like something old and broken trying to remember itself.
“I can feel how your heart answers to mine. How your body and soul whisper to me.”
I really enjoyed the emotional layering, the found family, the animal companion in Aera, and the reveal that this story isn’t about power, it’s about what Emmery was never allowed to remember.
“She couldn’t fight the feeling that they belonged together. But she didn’t deserve it. She’d never deserved love.”
This is a slow-burn romantasy, grief-soaked, fate-twisted, and emotionally sharp. I finished it already bracing myself for the sequel, because there’s no way this story lets anyone off easy.
Thank you to J.E Storm for having me on her review team 🫶🏻
Chaos, vibes, and opinions are all my own ✨ please give credit if you share.
Emmery have no choice but to strike a deal with Vesper,a plan to get back flame that shouldn’t exist. The trials are not easy, and more then once Vesper saves her life, and becoming fast her friend. Then there is Shade whom she only sees in her dreams,is he even real? Will they get task done and survive?
This was a fantasy with constant action,I liked world building and the magic feel unique.Emmery been trough a lot,Vesper also carry a lot of guilt,I liked their frienship and banter. The betrayal was not something that I expected and it was heatbreaking.I only wish there was more of the romance,I hope we get to know Shade better in the book two.
Full of betrayal, blood deals and short of selling your soul this book was a compelling read, can't wait for next book.
Thank you author for arc,my review is honest and my own.
This lovely book is something that once you pick it up, you cannot put it down. The world, the magic system, and the characters blew me away. With gods, prophecies and betrayals, this book will continually surprise and excite you as the story starts to unfold. It’s really bittersweet finishing such a delight of a book knowing there is a wait for the next book to be released, but I know I will be counting down the days.
Emmery is a badass FMC who is not afraid to follow her instincts. She is raw, broken, and her grief cuts through you like a winter’s breeze. Do not mistake her brokenness for weakness, her struggles have strengthened her heart and does not let that influence how she treats others. I loved seeing Emmery open up to others, and to embrace friendships. She is a true force to be reckoned with, and her sparks will catch, igniting the world with her power.
Emmery and Shades story warm my heart. Though they are separated from unknown forces, their love endures keeping it alive, even though Emmery’s dreams. This slow burn, pull to another waiting to finally hold each other is tugging at my chest. With Shade telling Emmery, “ To me, you are my air, and without you, my world will be ever so much smaller”, this alone won me over with their romance and I cannot wait for their love to emblaze.
Still reeling from Vesper, and not knowing what to think about Desmonne, there is one thing for sure: Emmery is finding her own inner strength and nothing will stop her from accomplishing her goals. There is one thing awaiting her, and he has green eyes.
Thank you J.E. Storm for this wonderful gift of an arc read, I am looking forward to book 2, and unfortunately I am fighting patience for it to come out.
The Spark That Ignites took me a little while to fully get into, but it later became incredibly captivating and I was soon fully invested.
I wasn't in love with the main character, Emmery, at first, but as the story progressed, she revealed herself to be a deeply complex FMC. Watching her navigate her trauma, rebuild trust in herself and others, and slowly reclaim herself was one of the strongest parts of the book.
The world building is easily 10/10. The author has a gift for creating an immersive setting that feels rich and alive, paired with a interesting and complex magic system.
Even though the book was overall fast-paced, a few sections did feel like they dragged slightly. That said, I stayed for the plot twists, betrayals, and emotional stakes!!
You’ll enjoy this book if you love: ✨Sloooooow burn ✨A powerful but broken FMC ✨Trauma bonding ✨Prophecies & chosen one tropes ✨Betrayals & plot twists ✨Soulmates ✨Reluctant allies
Overall, this was a great start to the series, and I’ll surely be picking up the sequel when it comes out.
When this author reached out to me and asked me to read her Debut. I said yes absolutely! This novel blew me away, it was so amazing. I'm struggling to find a way to explain this book to you in a few sentences because the world building was so perfectly in-depth and the characters grow so much. The story follows our FMC Emmery as she learns to control the magic that flows through her and Vesper as he deals with the grief and loss of his twin sister. Together they journey and go from strangers to friends. One of my favorite parts throughout the novel was Vespers positively versus Emmerys more depressed look at the world.
The world was beautifully written with lucious detail and emotions described so clearly I could see them on the characters faces. I ate this up in 3 days and absolutely loved it I would easily say that it was one of my favorite Fantasy reads of the year (and I've read 54 books this year 🤣). I absolutely cannot wait to hold the paperback in my hand when it debuts September 29th. Also I need to add that Aera was the best little pet fox who gets bitey as just the right times!
Do you like story's with Prophecies, Dark mysteries, a unique magic system, magical creatures, trauma, In-depth worldbuilding, amazing xharacters, and morally grey men? Then this book is for you! I recommend this novel 6/5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Go check out my insta @marymelodiesreads for my favorite qoutes ❤️
I honestly loved this book. Mostly because the FMC actually felt like an adult, not a 16-year-old falling in love with some ancient Fae that gives age-gap romance a whole new meaning.
She had such a beautiful, complex backstory, and the worldbuilding was so good. The magic system, the caste system, the whole “grass isn’t greener” vibe all really worked for me.
The characters had so much depth, and then the second half just went completely off the rails in the best way.
If you want a fantasy that feels a bit more mature and properly immersive, I really recommend this one.
I had the wonderful opportunity to read this book as an eARC (thank you💕)
I want to start by saying: This is 100% a fantasy book with world building. There's a little bit of romance, but the story is not driven by romance. You will find this a tedious read if you're expecting this book to be a romantasy (heavy on the romance).
The story follows Emmery, who has been living to simply survive in a society that hunts people like her. For far too long, she's been by herself without any kind of companion, and as a result of several years of living through terrible experiences, she has become distrustful and quiet. What she longs for the most is to be with her sister.
Vesper comes into Emmery's life out of nowhere with a promise and a bargain that he will help her get to the other realm in exchange for her help to bring back his twin sister. Along the way, we discover that Vesper and Emmery share a lot of things in common and seem to share some kind of connection.
The story is interesting with a unique magic system, prophecies, and world building and morally grey men. There is character development, and as someone who needs romance in the story, my favorite chapters were those where Emmery dreams of man she calls Shade🩷🫠
I enjoyed and genuinely liked the story. Even though I kept waiting for the romance, there's a good amount of playful banter going on. I'll mention I was not in the right headspace for a fantasy read at the time, so it did take me like 2 weeks to read it, but that ending was very good. It left us with a promise of a very good book to follow.
Favorite quotes:
✨️Sauntering to the chair, he plucked the book from her hand, bent the cover, and eyed it curiously. Emmery winced and snatched it back. “Don’t do that. The books don’t like it.” Vesper’s lips twitched. “The books don’t like it?” “Yes, they ... get rather upset.” Emmery smoothed the creased cover and set it on the side table.
✨️“I can feel how your heart answers mine. How your body and soul whisper to me. I want you to moan from my touch, my tongue on your skin. How you feel beneath me. You can’t possibly know how badly I crave you. There’s something ... undeniable between us.”
✨️ He cupped her face in both hands, his thumb sweeping her birthmark, his green eyes blazing. “I love you. Endlessly. In this life, in all my dreams, and every eternity.”
✨️Shade pulled back, his laboured breath stoking the fire in her blood. He whispered against her lips, “I would save you from a million nightmares, chase all your terrors away, and never wake again, if it meant I could dream just one more dream with you, Emmery.”
✨️“Right, my apologies.” The King drew his bottom lip between his teeth. “It’s only polite to let a lady finish first.”
The Spark that Ignites by J.E. Storm is an exceptionally well-written fantasy that scratched every single itch I have as a fan of the genre. It is a story of raw emotion, beautifully crafted lore, and a magic system that feels completely fresh. From the very first page, I was pulled into a world that manages to be both "sparkly" with wonder and heavy with the weight of loss.
The story centers on Emmery, a protagonist who is deeply broken by the death of her sister. Her grief is such a tangible force, it really drives all of her decision making and is completely understandable from a readers point of view. As she struggles to make it in a world that seems to want her dead, she crosses paths with Vesper, a secretive and dangerous man who becomes an unlikely friend. Their dynamic is one of my favorite parts of the book; the contrast between his outlook and her more somber perspective creates a compelling tension, but as you learn more you feel like they are just two sides of the same coin.
What truly stands out here is the depth of the world-building. J.E. Storm has clearly put a massive amount of thought into the history and the rules of this world, avoiding easy tropes in favor of something more complex. The character motivations are tight and believable, making every betrayal and alliance hit that much harder.
I finished this book with so many burning questions: I'll spare the spoilers, but I need to know what happens with lost memories and a certain persons past and the choices they made (and why the heck they made them). It ends on the best kind of cliffhanger... one that makes you want to immediately restart the book to look for clues you might have missed.
If you love stories with unique magic, deep world-building, and characters who are as fierce as they are flawed, look no further than The Spark that Ignites. I am officially counting down the days until the next installment!
The Spark That Ignites is a beautifully written fantasy romance that blends grief, identity, and fate into a story that feels both intimate and epic. Emmery is a protagonist you feel; her loneliness, her strength, her quiet defiance. Every page carries the weight of her loss while slowly building something powerful and dangerous beneath the surface.
The worldbuilding is immersive without being overwhelming, and the magic unfolds naturally, like it’s always been there waiting to be claimed. And then there’s Vesper; mysterious, brooding, and impossible to ignore. The slow-burn tension between them simmers steadily, making every interaction charged and meaningful rather than rushed.
As if that weren’t enough, Emmery is also haunted by vivid dreams of a lover who feels far too real; blurring the line between fantasy and reality and adding an intoxicating layer of longing, confusion, and desire.
What truly sets this book apart is the emotion. It’s raw, aching, and hopeful all at once. J.E. Storm doesn’t just tell a story; she pulls you into it and refuses to let go. By the end, I was left stunned, emotionally WRECKED, and desperately needing the next book.
The Spark That Ignites follows FMC Emmery, a broken heroine wielding a dangerous flame and a vengeance-driven plan to bring her sister back. Caught between desire, betrayal, and love with dangerous allies and enemies alike, she must choose whether to embrace the cursed girl the world fears or become the spark of hope that can save it.
This is one of those romances that starts with a tiny spark and somehow ends with you fully invested, emotionally attached, and side-eyeing the characters for making such questionable life choices.
The chemistry? Slow-burn perfection. The kind where you’re yelling “JUST KISS ALREADY” but also low-key grateful they’re taking their time. The characters feel real, messy, and emotionally guarded in a way that makes you root for them hard. Storm’s writing is smooth, immersive, and knows exactly when to twist the knife (in a fun way). She had me rooting for a character that wasn't really there... 🤔 (iykyk - read the book to find out!).
Is the middle a little draggy? Maybe. Did I still keep reading because I needed to know how it all came together? Absolutely!
If you love angsty romance, emotional tension, and a payoff that feels worth the wait, this is a solid four-star read that’ll spark your interest and keep you smiling. 🔥📖
I received an e-ARC for this book for my honest review.
4.5
The adventure begins quickly with Emmery trying desperately to find safety and being swept into other’s adventures. There is such a fun balance between the bonds she is building, which feels necessary especially since we get all of her heartbreaking backstory and trauma. Her loneliness, desperation, and grief are palpable, you immediately feel for her and understand her motivations, and slowly feel for Vesper as he sprinkles his more complicated motivations throughout.
What is fun, is because Emmery has limited understanding, Vesper acts as her and our guides for the greater world building.
It jumps from adventure to adventure with trial, prophecy, and hidden agendas - so it is definitely a faster paced story.
The last few chapters had me gutted and re-gutted with ALL the twists and turns. I could only see some of them coming, and I was definitely shook by some of them. It left it with a good setup into the next book and I am going to be very impatient to learn more about Shade.
I couldn't put this book down. If you love fantasy the SPARK THAT IGNITES is a must read. This book has everything forbidden magic, love, hearbreak, betrayal, and many magical creatures. I could never imagine the work that goes into writing such an imaginative book like this one. J. E. STORM has a story to tell and her words seem to flow effortlessly, building the magical realm of Karynthia and breathing life into the personalities of the characters. I laughed at Vespers witty sarcasm and felt Emmery's pain and lack of trust in humanity with the past that she had been dealt. The adorable magical fox Aera will steel your heart. And finally the ending with a major twist that will leave you second guessing everything. Lost memories, betrayal, and very Mysterious dreams. I cannot wait for THE EMBER THAT TETHERS the second book in the SHATTERED SOUL SERIES.
I enjoyed this so much ! Being taken on an emotional journey with Emmy you can't help but to feel her as she struggles with everything being put in front of her and trying to make the right decisions and trusting her self. She dreams of her soulmate and only knows him by Shade. She becomes friends with a prince whom she trusts. This has God's and Goddesses a Prophcey that must be seen through. Trying to figure out who you can trust all while her memories stolen and she isn't sure what she needs to do. There is Magic There are animal companions. I enjoyed world building and the story is absolutely wonderful! I honestly had so many big feels with this book. The next book please !!
**TROPES** - Reluctant allies - Unreliable memories - Prophecy - Found family - Chosen one - Magic has a cost - Animal companions - Soulmates
**THOUGHTS** High stakes, fast paced fantasy that keeps you hooked through regular twists in the plot. The last 15% of the book is a wild ride of WTF moments that left me questioning so much about the story I had read.
**RECOMMENDATION** Looking for a fast paced fantasy that ends with more questions than answers and keeps you guessing. One where the FMC comes into her power and finds out more about herself and her strengths.
**QUOTES** - “Even now, after all this time, my worthless emaciated heart still calls her name. My living flame, my eternal fire—I would bleed my veins dry to be her tinder.” - “I’d rather fuck a cactus.” - “Everybody wants something. It all comes down to how much you’re willing to do to get it. How much of yourself you’ll sacrifice. Some will kill for it, others won’t.”
This book had me questioning everything. It is not your average fantasy by any means. Emmery and Vesper absolutely light up the pages—literally (you’ll understand once you read it).
I was completely captivated and constantly trying to puzzle everything out… spoiler alert: I couldn’t, and that made the experience even better. The side characters brought so much sass and heart, the relationship between Vesper and Emmery was unforgettable, and the side stories sprinkled throughout added depth that made this world feel alive.
It’s been weeks since I finished, and I’m still thinking about it. The Spark That Ignites is an unforgettable fantasy read that will leave you reeling in the best way possible.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — This one comes out Monday (9/29). READ IT. I promise you won’t regret it.
I was so excited when I got this to read as a review copy! And when I tell you I loved it!
I always struggle with anything other then 1st person POVS but this I devoured! I loved the world building, the magic system and the story!! Eurgh emotional rollercoaster! I felt everything that was being written!!
I was hooked! And now I’ve read it there is still so many unanswered questions and I want NEED more 🫣
I loved all the banter in this and love how it touches on the emotional side to! Was such a good balance and you could really relate to the characters and the character development was amazing!
If you want - ✨Slow burn ✨Forgotten memories ✨Animal companions ✨Prophecies ✨Intense emotions ✨Amazing world building ✨Unique magic system ✨plot twist
And a book that leaves you wanting more! As always add this to your TBR right now!!
This book left me spiraling at the end… like EXCUSE ME?!?! What do you mean there are more secrets and now you can’t trust ANYONE???? 👀 This book was so good from the first page until the very end and I’m super excited for when book 2 comes out. The pacing of the book was good within the timelines and all, but there were a couple spots where it seemed to not flow as well, but not enough to take you out of the story. It just seemed odd more than anything. If you like magic, gods trying to destroy you 🫠, and untrustworthy men 😏, then this book is definitely for you. Are you willing to trust someone to help better yourself? 🤭
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book and my was this book spectacular🫢💖
The world building for this book is insane, so much that I never wanted to put it down. ESPECIALLY the characters which I instantly fell in love with the second they were introduced. The spark that ignites ❤️🔥🧨 is full of twists and turns, leaving you in amazement up until the very end.
If you’re a fan of slow burn, soulmates, animal companions and so much more I highly recommend you give this book a read.
J.E storm debut novel is genuinely was of the best I’ve ever read and I’m forever grateful I got to read it.
I absolutely loved it — I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this story since I finished it! It’s a heartbreaking yet beautiful tale that weaves together gods and goddesses, prophecies, a found family, forbidden magic, and a mysterious romance. This novel will make you both laugh and cry, and its impact lingers long after you turn the final page.
I got to read it as an ARC, and now I can’t wait for the sequel! I wholeheartedly encourage you to read this book as soon as it’s released. Join the group of readers eagerly awaiting the next installment — you’ll fall head over heels.
This book was well worth the read! I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.
Basically the FMC, Emmery (LOVE) has to make a bargain to get to where she needs to go. Everything has a price and her end of the bargain is beyond difficult to hold up. Emmery is such a complex character and the trauma subtle drives the narrative. The found family, animal sidekick, and beautifully crafted world that J.E. Storm created is immaculate. Devoured this book in a weekend, there are ~51 chapters. SO GOOD!
This book had me hooked from the first chapter and refusing to put it down, even at 4 a.m. before a work shift!
The banter is sharp, the nickname is perfect, and the character connections rival my favorite fantasy authors.
I laughed out loud, swooned over the charm (yes, even Vesper), and cried more than once. The action scenes were cinematic, the twists delicious, and the end? Absolutely chef’s kiss. (no spoilers! I promise!)
I devoured this story way too fast and now desperately need the sequel. HBO, if you’re listening—adapt this immediately.
INCREDIBLE! From the very beginning I was captivated. Unlike a lot of fantasy books, I was able to pick it up and immediately understand the world. The world building was done perfectly. We learned as the FMC did. The magic is unique, complex and very intriguing. MMC’s witty attitude made it feel like I’ve know him for years.
Do you enjoy books that live rent free inside your head? The ones you think about laying in bed? Well this one is it.
It is beautiful, tragic, gods/goddess features, found family, forbidden magic and mysterious romance. I truly believe this book will make you laugh, kick your feet with a side of crying.
Oh my days - this book had me gripped from the very beginning. With more twists than I can count and none of which I expected. This book will make you laugh and cry and have all the feels. I’m joining the group of people desperately waiting for the next book.
