For years, Bri has stolen from the Vaellan vampires. With a face nobody remembers—a shadow without a name—she’s become the finest thief among a coffle of slaves, with a master who cares for nothing but revenge. The success of every one of Bri’s heists is cruelly tied to her sister’s fate, so failure is not an option.
But there’s no escape the night "he" discovers her—a mysterious vampire who leaves her with more than physical proof of her failed heist. He offers her a glimpse into a life she can’t have—a life with hope.
Now with her enemy’s fang marks on her neck, his venom flowing through her veins, and her thoughts consumed with desire for him, Bri is thrust into the middle of an impending war. Torn between the forces of two formidable worlds, she must choose: save her sister and surrender to the perilous darkness, or fight for the golden rays of hope she only dares to touch in her vampire-cursed dreams.
Book One in The Black Iris Series - A fantasy romance.
Huge lover of fantasy, sci-fi and all things romance.
I’ve been writing novels since I was sixteen, however, it’s taken me a long time (25 years in fact) to find the courage to publish. But life is too short!
I began my author life writing historical romances, but over the years I’ve swayed towards sci-fi and fantasy, mixed with romance. I think you’ll find I’m a desperate romantic at heart. (Shhh, don’t tell my husband).
This was an emotionally intense journey, following Bri as she fights for her own survival and to protect her sister. Controlled by a dangerous man, Bri is forced to steal, lie and infiltrate in missions she has no choice but to obey, until a vampire stands in her way and changes their fate. Between her mysterious vampire saviour, and her cruel sadistic master, she is caught in a deadly game of survival and sorrow. It's a dark world of control, violence and secrets, and Bri is at the centre of a paranormal war she had no idea was coming. I loved seeing a new take on vampires and Fae, mixed with Nordic lore. It's an intriguing story filled with plenty of conflicts, hidden identities, and betrayals. Excited for the next book, and hoping they get the vengeance they deserve.
This book completely consumed me. I finished it with an immediate need for book two. The emotional weight of Bri’s journey is intense. Her resilience in the face of everything she endures is powerful and unforgettable. I could not put this book down and stayed up far too late convincing myself I would stop after just one more chapter.
The story centers on Bri, who is forced to survive through a series of increasingly dangerous jobs that push her far beyond simple survival. Her assignments place her in direct contact with the Vaes (Vampires), each encounter raises the stakes higher than the last. When she crosses paths with a particular Vae, the trajectory of her life begins to shift in ways she cannot control.
I am left with so many questions. I want to know more about Bri’s past and to explore the depth of the worlds introduced. This is absolutely a book worth rereading. The way the author carefully plants details throughout the story and brings everything together by the end is really rewarding! I absolutely loved this book!
I loved Alana's previous books, so even though this not my usual genre, I had to give it a go. It is written from the FMC perspective, Bri. A slave, and for her keep her owner, Wyatt, has turned her into a thief. She steals from the Vae (vampires), but she can't fail, as it would worsen her sisters fate. All was well until the night she meets Nate, a Vae, and as the tag line suggests, his bite changes everything.
This was such a good story, you think you know what will happen but then something happens and your drawn back into the story because you need to know what happens next. Bri and Nate are great characters, with Bri's years of being a slave to a cruel master, her trust doesn't come easy, so is constantly questioning Nates intensions, which hads to the tension and angst in this book.
As with Alana's other books, it's easy to read, the world building is perfect and the story moves quickly without feeling rushed. Yes fantasy is not my usual genre, but being an urban fantasy and set from a single POV kept it from being over complicated. Yes it does end on a cliffhanger, but nothing too dramatic, so and looking forward to the next installment.
This is the third book by the author which I've read and Alana does not disappoint. The story centers on Bri, a thief working for a Wyatt, but really, she's an indentured sl@ve doing everything in her power to keep herself and her sister safe. Along the way, she meets a vampire (of a sort), and Bri has to battle increasing danger and growing (unwelcome) feelings for this mystery vampire.
I enjoyed the worldbuilding, the blended magical and urban settings, and all sorts of supernatural creatures thrown into the mix. The book was set in England, while certain scenes were reminiscent of Velaris in the ACOTAR series. These aspects, along with the wonderful writing, made this book a fantastic read.
The story has violent scenes, and Bri does get into some sticky situations considering what she's forced to do and what's done to her. So check the author's trigger warnings before proceeding. Otherwise, prepare for an AMAZING urban fantasy tale.
I have always loved stories about vampires, so was looking forward to this one. I have to say it didn't disappoint. Loved the vampire law, Alana put her own twist on it and left you wanting to know more. Also loved the law of other fae races and the connection to our folklore.
Bri was a fantastic character and so want to find out fully about her fae heritage. I was fully rooting for her with her protective nature for her sister but how much she was also torn with her connection to Nate.
As for Nate his character is scrumptious, a true handsome hero coming to Bri's rescue. So can't wait to find out more about him and the Vae.
Loved the little clues throughout the book, that all seemed to align at the end. Glad it wasn't a cliffhanger ending and loved how it was left with you wanting more.

Liked this story very much. If you like slow burn, a bit of fantasy, a dash of science fiction and a good old tale of love and torment. You will like this book. The female lead has a past she can't remember and a future that looks as bleak as it can be. She does her best to look after the ones she loves, but gets caught up in an interstellar war between several different races, one of which are akin to vampires. The story has a spin on the familiar beings that you think you know and it will draw you in, to a fantastic story about all types of relationships and forbidden love. This book is mainly about a woman trapped in a life she doesn't deserve and where she has to find a way to fight for her life and those she loves. Would highly recommend this book by an author who is going from strength to strength with every new novel she writes. I look forward to seeing where the story goes next.
* I received this as an ARC reader. My review is purely my own and not influenced by the author* When I say I ate ate this book up....I ATE IT UP! Alana has a way with her writing that just WORKS! The story started out simple enough, but by the end-the world had expanded and I was kept guessing what and who was friend, foe, or other. There is a depth to the main female character-we get to see her inner struggles and how she navigates life. I love this author. It could easily be a multi book series vs a duet. It could also be duets of the different characters involved(think Crowns of Nyaxia style). I cannot wait for the second book. And I hope I have the opportunity to be an arc reader for it also!
Vampires and Fae?! This world I was brought into was absolutely incredible and I can't believe this is the first time I've read something as creative as the Vae (vampire fae). Bri, the FMC, would do anything to keep her sister safe and at times it is just heartbreaking! Reading this was so much fun because it kept me on my toes. I could not figure out who I should truly trust, and had to pick my jaw up off the ground when the betrayal hit! I cannot wait for the next book!!!
It is a refreshing take on the magical world including Vampires, Fae and Werewolves. the writing style was very smooth and it was very easy to read far more than I intended. Just as you thought you knew what was going to happen, something else was revealed to keep me engaged in the book. I enjoyed the premise of the book and found the characters engaging, it ended on a cliff hanger so I need the next book now!
For me, this was a 3.5, but I'm giving it 4 stars bc Alana is a good writer and I think I have read so much Romantasy that this one didn't really do it as much for me. And I think this made me realize urban romantasy may not be my thing. I didn't want to pull down her rating due to my own bias!
I read the Eden series by her and was blown away. I also read her short story in the other worlds anthology. I just prefer her sci fi based stories better.
But if you like urban romantasy, magical beings, etc, this could be for you! Alana has a great writing style that makes it easy to settle into her stories and it's hard not to stop at the end of each chapter.
I love cliffhangers and this one was *chefs kiss* Urban settings with magic and supernatural creatures. Several scenes are...intense so be sure to check trigger warnings if you have any but I throughly enjoyed reading this book. Cannot wait for book 2 to come put and see what happens next!
I absolutely loved this book! As the first in the series, it pulls you straight into Bri’s world—a slave who’s mastered the art of thievery, driven by her desperate need to protect her sister. With no clear memories of her childhood beyond being taken away, Bri’s life takes a sharp turn the night she crosses paths with a vampire who not only saves her, but seems mysteriously connected to her past.
Raised to believe vampires are pure evil, she never questioned stealing from them… until everything she thought she knew begins to unravel. What follows is a fast‑paced, gripping story full of danger, secrets, and shifting loyalties.
The characters are layered and compelling—even the ones I didn’t like were written so vividly that I couldn’t help but feel something about them. Bri finds herself torn between worlds, her identity, and the people she loves.
The writing is beautifully simple and addictive—I devoured the whole book in one sitting. And that cliffhanger? I’m absolutely ready for book two!
ARC Review- I could not put this book down!! I came from reading Alana's sci-fi duology I discovered late last year and immediately signed up for this ARC despite it being quite different from that series. Alana's way of writing has quickly become one of my favorites, easily tugging at my emotions when it comes to romance, and painting vivid pictures in my mind with her descriptive settings. This is highlighted again in this book with the fantasy setting showcasing vampires, faes, among other creatures, and even new worlds. I also want to note, the history of these worlds and their beings are easy to follow which made the reading enjoyable down the line when things were being explained.
The FMC, Bri, is immediately shown as strong and good at what she does (albeit being forced to as a slave, for her sister's safety) and I always find a strong FMC refreshing! Her strength and perseverance only gets highlighted further down the line as her past is exposed along with experiencing betrayal, mental and physical abuse, and so much more to come based on this cliffhanger.
From the get go, this story starts off quick with Nate, the MMC, being introduced early. The way he interacts with Bri had me trying to guess what exactly was going on and how everything was going to connect. In Bri's world of secrecy and distrust, I really was second guessing everything I thought was going to happen, which I loved. Despite the guessing along the way, I found myself automatically rooting for Nate and Bri getting a happy ending after all she's been through. Their romance tugged at my heart strings, with him wanting to protect her and Bri's reluctance to trust anyone wholeheartedly.
The antagonists in this story were so well written. With mind games being played all the way to the end and the vile things they would say and do, it was easy to get sucked into. I needed to keep reading to see what their outcome would be. Along with them, the more minor characters had spotlight that got me attached to them rather quickly which was a pleasant surprise.
I don't want to spoil anything as this book has amazing twists and turns, but the pacing of the story, the characters and their personalities shining through, even through short moments given, and the setting made this book worth a read. I will absolutely be waiting on book 2! The cliffhanger is just too good leaving me with even more questions and I need to see how everything will be solved.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ARC Review – Thief of Darkness by Alana Faye Wilson Urban Romance / Vampire Romance
Thief of Darkness is an urban romance that blends danger, desire, and emotional depth in a way that feels both intense and deeply human. From a psychological perspective, what stands out immediately is how grounded Bri’s emotional world feels—even in the midst of vampires, slavery, and looming war.
Bri’s motivations are painfully clear. Her love for her sister, her fear of failure, and her conditioned survival instincts shape every decision she makes. Nothing about her reactions feels exaggerated or convenient; her trauma, loyalty, and guarded hope are portrayed with care and realism. You understand why she does what she does—even when the stakes are brutal.
The romance is where this story truly shines. The connection that forms after that pivotal bite is layered with longing, internal conflict, and reluctant vulnerability. Desire isn’t just physical—it’s psychological, emotional, and deeply unsettling in the best way. The pull between Bri and the vampire who marks her feels dangerous, tender, and achingly real, especially as hope becomes something she wants but barely believes she deserves.
What makes this book unforgettable is how it balances darkness with heart. Even as war looms and choices become impossible, there’s a quiet thread of warmth and possibility woven throughout. The story delivers tension, chemistry, and emotional payoff while never losing sight of the humanity at its core.
If Thief of Darkness is your first Alana Faye Wilson book, it won’t be your last. Her ability to write emotionally intelligent, immersive urban romance makes her entire catalog worth exploring. This is a five-star read that leaves you wanting more—not just of the story, but of everything she’s written.
Thief of Darkness is a dark urban‑fantasy tale, which includes romance (but isn't the forefront of the first book)and it is following Brianna, a young woman trapped under the control of her boss, Wyatt. Forced into dangerous assignments in order to protect her sister, Brianna’s journey is tense, emotional, and often heartbreaking. The opening chapter hooked me instantly — it’s gripping from the very first page.
This story definitely leans into darker themes, so readers should be mindful of potential triggers. Brianna’s suffering and abuse is portrayed in a way that stirs real emotion — anger, sadness, frustration — and it’s impossible not to feel for her as she fights to survive.
The pacing is fast and action‑driven throughout. At first, I assumed this would be a standalone (I prefer going in blind so I can let the story guide me), but by the final section it became clear there’s no way everything can wrap up in one book. There are too many unanswered questions, so a duology seems inevitable.
I did find the first half somewhat predictable, but the second half absolutely makes up for it with twists I didn’t see coming. The worldbuilding is a standout — a modern mortal world layered with other realms filled with vampires, wolves, werewolves, witches, and more. It’s immersive without being overwhelming.
The writing style is clean, accessible, and easy to fly through. I finished the entire book in a single day because I genuinely couldn’t put it down. My only real wish is that the MMC had a bit more depth to make him feel more swoon‑worthy and relatable. Still, the blend of danger, desire, and rising conflict creates a compelling arc for Brianna as she grows into the woman she’s meant to become — with plenty of secrets still waiting to be uncovered.
4.5 star
I received an Arc copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thief of Darkness was a high-energy, urban romantasy that honestly surprised me in a good way. Contemporary/urban fantasy usually isn’t my go-to (I’m either fully modern or so deep in fantasy I’m shocked women can wear pants), but this one really worked for me.
The world is built around Vae (vampires) with hints of a larger magic system, and while the story is super interesting, the lore drops can be… a lot. This is the main reason it didn’t quite hit 5 stars for me. The info-dumping gets intense at times, and I found myself wishing for either a reference guide or just a slightly lighter touch with the worldbuilding.
The romance between Bri and Nate is very much a slow burn…like, VERY slow burn. The tension is good (I’d say around a 3/5 on intensity), but despite a major plot twist and a big reveal about what “Black Iris” actually means, we barely get more than a kiss. If you’re here primarily for romance, just know that the lore and political plotlines definitely take center stage in this book.
Speaking of politics: there’s more of it than I personally prefer. It’s not bad - actually, it’s well done and clearly important to the story - but I’m a “let the romance drive the plot” kind of reader, and here the romance is more in the passenger seat.
That said, the setting and vibes really worked for me. I couldn’t help but feel some Mortal Instruments influence, especially with the compound they live in and the use of portals/gates—but it felt like a fresh take rather than a copy.
Overall, a 4/5, fast-paced and engaging read. I wanted more romance, slightly less lore all at once, but I’m absolutely invested now. I will be reading the next installment, and I genuinely can’t wait to see where this series goes!
This is the first vampire book I've read, and it happily reminds me of Crescent City, with multiple magical species including shifters and serpents. The urban fantasy setting was also new to me, as the events of the story largely take place in Cambridge, despite the otherworldly fantasy realm waiting beyond.
Bri is a human enslaved as a thief for Wyatt, who (along with his goons) is basically the worst. Her only goal is protecting her baby sister, Auriele, by submitting to whatever Wyatt demands. A routine theft goes south when she’s caught on an op by Nate, a Vae (a vampire, but very Fae-like) who lets her escape. But their growing bond jeopardizes her safety under Wyatt’s suspicious thumb…
Bri’s love for her sister is sweet and powerful; it makes her a compelling protagonist. Auriele annoyed me at times, but I suspect there’s more to her than meets the eye, and I’ll be excited for that story to unravel in Book 2. (I have my suspicions…) Nate’s a sweet green-flag MMC—Bri thinks of him as her dark knight, but I’d say he’s rather more of a knight in shining armor—and there are some sweet hurt/comfort scenes between them. I loved Fran’s devotion to Nate, it reminded me a lot of Rhys and Cassian!
For readers looking for true romantasy, with a center-stage romance and high stakes, this book is for you!
This story follows Bri, a slave forced to work for her owner in exchange for her sister's safe keeping. While working a job, she runs into a vampire who shows her the type of world she could truly live in. Bri, having been through so much already in her life, doesn't want to believe there is hope out there. While trying to sort out her own thoughts and desires, she finds herself within a war that has long since been raging.
This book features fae, vampires, werewolves, betrayal, turmoil, and a cliff you will be very upset to be hanging from.
While I really enjoyed this book, I found some pieces of Bri to be repetitive. For me, I wanted her to grow so much more than I feel like she did. While this and a few other details are why I gave it a 4 and not a 5, I will ABSOLUTELY be reading for the next book. I have some theories I NEED answers for! 😁
For those getting ready to read it, please read all trigger warnings before jumping in.
Bri and her sister, Aurelie, were sold to Wyatt when they were young and since then Bri has been working as a thief, doing anything she can to save her sister. On what should have been a routine theft, Bri comes across a Vae, basically a vampire who stops the theft and bites her as well. This surprisingly leads to a bond between them. Because of that failure as well as one that follows, Bri is tortured and given another choice. She must steal a Vae artifact. The person she is supposed to steal from is Nate, the one who bit her. This book has a lot of action, violence, some interesting powers. Interesting characters, suspense and quite a few surprises. It is very dark in some areas and is not a quick, easy read. What I found was that it was one of those books you just can’t put down. Unfortunately, the next book doesn’t come out for a while but I enjoyed this one enough that when the next installment comes out, I will gladly reread this. Definitely worth reading.
THIS WAS A ARC READ GIVEN TO ME BY THE AUTHOR BUT THIS IS MY HONEST REVIEW. THIS IS MY FIST URBAN FANTASY BOOK AND IT WAS MORE THAN EXPECTED. THE STORY HAS GREAT MAIN CHARACTERS WITH GREAT PLOT. BRI IS A SLAVE THAT IS FORCED TO STEAL FOR HER OWNER BUT AT HER TASK STARTS TO GET VERY COMPLICATED. SHE IS TRYING TO PROTECT HERSELF, HER SISTER AND THOSE SHE CARES ABOUT BUT SHE IS IN THE MIDDLE OF TWO PATHS THAT SHE WILL END UP HAVING TO CHOOSE. HER PATHS COME ACROSS WITH A VAMPIRE THAT END UP SAVING HER LIFE EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS RAISED TO HATE THEM BECAUSE TO HER THEY WERE PURE EVIL. ENEMIES TO NEMESIS TO LOVERS THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO SAY!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED, THIS WAS MY FIRST BOOK FROM ALANA AND I CANT WAIT FOR MORE.
This was a pretty quick ready, this book started off a little slow, but still enticing enough to keep reading. The FMC was interesting, I wanted to see what she would do next, how she would get out of these situations, and what would her end become. The MMC was mysterious, charming, and nice. So nice that I didn’t want to trust him but I couldn’t help it! Towards the middle of the book things really start to pick up, there’s questions I’m asking myself and twists that I don’t see coming. Trying to figure it out is so much fun! By the end I’m ready for the next book and can’t wait to see what happens to our beloved characters. There’s betrayal, love, loss, and mystery with every page of this book. Would def recommend to anyone who needs a little reassurance.
I received an early copy of this book and want to thank the author for the opportunity to read it because it turned out to be a really exciting surprise. I went in completely blind and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up pleasantly surprised. The story was engaging and kept me on my toes with all the twists and turns.
I really liked the FMC, Bri. She’s a fighter who constantly puts her own safety aside to protect her family, even when it means sacrificing her own well-being. The author also did a great job exploring the history of the Fae and how each of them fits into the world they live in. The groundwork is clearly laid to expand on this even more in the next book. Overall, this was a great read, and I can’t wait to continue Bri’s story in book two.
Bri has done everything in her power to protect her sister from the powers that control her. Things she is not proud of and things that have left scars.
She is never one to back down (even if it is for her) and longs for connection that is truly hers.
Nat is trying to find the truth under all Bri's masks. He wants to live up to his responsibility and protect Bri.
The twists and surprising connection and secrets kept me turning page after page. I had to what was going to happen!!
I have questions that must wait for book 2, so I will try to be patient!🤞
The emotional roller coaster that is this book. Honestly I was honoured enough to be able to be an ARC reader. This book is 100000% worth a read and a re read, there are more twist and turns than country lanes and MOST you don't see till they slap you in the face. Honestly book perfection right here.

This book. Oof. Absolutely loved it. Had a good mix of emotional intelligence, murder, betrayal, spice, and action. I found each character, even the “worst ones” relatable and enjoyable. The author did a great job at building the world in which the plot takes place. Genuinely disappointed that I finished it so fast!
Bri is a slave on an alternate reality Earth, forced to steal for her owner. However, after being the best thief, her jobs start to go wrong. The jobs she is given seem impossible, and she has too many close calls. Soon, a mysterious Vae (vampire) is following her around and interfering with her jobs, and Bri learns how much she has forgotten, and there is more to this world than she could have imagined.
Thief of Darkness is a tense enemies-to-lovers urban romance. Bri walks a dangerous tightrope, trying to protect herself, her sister, and her friends. She and those around her must make some tough choices. The book is full of magical creatures, which you learn more about as the story goes on. In the beginning, the details about Bri's world are vague. Bri doesn't really understand the world she lives in, and that POV is passed onto the reader. I still have many questions, and I hope more world-building is revealed in book 2. Bri's life is rough, and some parts of the book are complex, so check the trigger warnings. 5 stars for this entertaining romantasy!
