A decade ago, I came up with the idea of a writing exercise to enhance my descriptive writing skills. I’d write about a single place, item, or activity that occurred in a very short period of time. I thought of the Latin term, “Centum Verba,” one hundred words.
I studied Latin in high school and college, so the choice was a no-brainer.
With few exceptions, I wrote or developed the ideas for each of the following Centum Verba pieces, mostly in coffee shops. People going about their everyday business are excellent thought starters. My subjects a falling snowflake, a traffic light, a sip of coffee, running shoes, strands of hair, a bar of soap, a coed, a raindrop, a barista, a young mind, time, and many more.
Each story, poem, or stream of consciousness is exactly one hundred words long, not one more or one less.
