Res

Lauressa Kleen’s greatest fear was being lured back into a cult. Then Jaxson Devine, heir to The Sovereignty, convinced her she belonged by his side—whether she wanted to or not. But Jaxson's father, the Sovereignty’s leader, disagrees.

Now, her greatest fear is that everything she's endured to be with Jaxson will mean nothing. Because in a cult, the number one rule is that the leader's word is law.

Good thing Lauressa’s never been good at following rules. If anyone can take down a cult leader, it's her.

She needs Jaxson's help, but that means he has to choose between the two things he wants most: her and The Sovereignty. It’s a dangerous gamble assuming that he’ll choose her. But now that the Oracle has her in his clutches, Jaxson is her only hope… if her faith in him isn’t misplaced.

Jaxson

Jaxson Devine doesn’t believe his father is the anointed messenger of The Supreme Force. He doesn’t even believe the Supreme Force is real. But just because he doesn’t believe it doesn’t mean he doesn't recognize that the quickest way to achieve power is to make the rest of the world think so.

He’s lied, cheated, stolen, and even murdered for the better part of twenty years to position himself as his father’s perfect heir. But before his father will officially name him, there’s one last test to pass: a test of sacrifice. That is, giving up the person he wants just as much as he wants to be Oracle—Lauressa.

His father is clear. He can’t have both. If he chooses Lauressa, he’ll be cast out of the Sovereignty. If he chooses the Sovereignty, he’ll lose Lauressa.

Three months ago, the answer would have been a no-brainer. Now, the answer isn’t so clear. Or so he thinks. Because the answer lies in the choice he’s wanted to make all along.

Favorite Quotes:

“You act like you’re so fucking above everyone else? Like you’re so much better because you don’t believe a goddamn word that comes out of your father’s mouth. Because you know he’s delusional. But you’re just like them. Just as scared as they are that if you step out of line, you’ll be smited, or damned to hell, or turned into a pillar of salt, or whatever the fuck. You just know there isn’t some mystical force that will punish you for offending its precious messenger. And that’s worse. Because your god is just a man, and because he has something you want, you won’t fight him.”

“The only one here who is a slave is you. My disciple. I am your God. Your supreme one. The only Supreme Force you’re ever allowed to believe in. And I’m a jealous God who will slay anyone who dares vie for your attention.”

“Because rebellion only means anything when there are meaningful consequences for doing it.”

I love her, and my love is obsessive. My love is torment. My love is torture—painful, possessive, jealous, and a myriad of other heinous emotions. Regardless, she’s mine, for now until beyond eternity. Our two souls intertwined as one.

Frankly, very long and pretty distributing. The plot was plotting but there were definitely plot holes. The romance died down into a low simmer of long distance angst and political intrigue. Overall mid.

This book and the first in the duet had me in a chokehold, I think I finished both in three days. I absolutely loved the story line in addition to the spicier scenes. I’m an absolute sucker for tormentors getting their karma and this book gave that and more. There was one specific scene towards the end, that only lasted a couple paragraphs where I had to put it down for a second and then come back to skim through it but that was just semi unexpected even with the warnings at the beginning. Overall, it was absolutely amazing and I was very upset that it ended! (Amazing place to leave off, I’m just a sucker for a good book and author!)

Umm

This series has shown me that I will apparently read just about anything, no matter how terrible it is. I was initially drawn to the relationship between Res and Jaxon, but as I continued reading, I became horrifyingly hooked. However, my honest opinion is to avoid this book unless it aligns with your own taste for circus.

I waited a while for this book to come out and when it did I devoured it. The ending was top tier and to find out the MMC had siblings that were also over his father and his bs was amazing.

This was both moreish when it came to the plot, but also left me wanting more when it came to the main characters of this sequel. Overall I enjoyed it and would happily read more if the author decided to extend this duet into a series.
