Hearts Burn Slow completely pulled me in with its blend of the human and fae worlds. The idea of Layni’s dreams being tied to her brain tumor, the thing doctors want to take away being the very thing that’s kept her sane, is such a haunting, original concept, and it makes every crossing between the two realms feel weighted with real stakes.
I got so emotionally attached to these characters and the ending had me on the edge of my seat. Cannot wait for the next one!

I really enjoyed how unique this book felt, especially with the different realms and the complexity of the story. The author didn’t shy away from heavier themes like trauma, illness, and manipulation, which added so much depth to the characters and their experiences. There were so many layers to unpack, and I really appreciated how thoughtfully everything was woven together.

Hearts Burn Slow hooked me from the start with its mix of modern life and high fantasy, and the way those two threads crash together is what made it unforgettable for me. Layni is such a layered main character—an author with a brain tumor, a strained relationship with her long-term boyfriend Greg, and these vivid, haunting dreams that are more real than her waking life.
And then there’s Calyx. From the moment he steps into Layni’s dreams—this magnetic, brooding fae prince searching for his “Fireheart”—the book takes on a whole new intensity. Their connection feels inevitable, but also dangerous. It’s not the kind of insta-love you roll your eyes at; it’s more like fate dragging two people together whether they’re ready or not. By the time Calyx calls Layni “Fireheart,” I was just as swept up as she was.
Greg, on the other hand, absolutely grated on me—and I think he’s meant to. He’s controlling, dismissive, and while he has these moments where you almost feel for him, it’s clear he doesn’t understand Layni’s world or her needs. The contrast between him and Calyx is stark, and it makes Layni’s choices all the more powerful.
The fantasy side of the book is equally rich. The gods of Fairy, the politics, the sacrifices—it’s all dripping with tension. It’s beautiful, but also cruel and unforgiving. Sienna and the other fae characters add depth to the sense that this isn’t just a love story; it’s also about survival, destiny, and resisting forces bigger than yourself.
By the time the book closed, I was left both satisfied and desperate for more. Layni’s journey is far from over, and I have a feeling the stakes—both in her world and in Fairy—are only going to get higher.

Hearts Burn Slow has such an original concept. A writer whose dreams connect her to the fae realm — and whose imagination may not be imagination at all — is such a fascinating idea. It’s creative, fresh, and full of potential.
Layni Blackthorn is an author facing brain surgery that could sever her link to Fairy, the world she dreams of and writes about. I found that setup really compelling — the emotional conflict of wanting to hold on to something magical, even when reality says you shouldn’t. Her toxic relationship with Greg is also written uncomfortably well; his controlling and belittling behavior felt painfully realistic and added a lot of depth to her character’s isolation.
Where the story lost me a bit was in the execution. The transitions between dreams, reality, and the fae world often felt disjointed, and it made it hard to follow what was happening or to connect emotionally. I also struggled to feel the chemistry between Layni and Calyx — the romance developed very suddenly, and I would have loved more buildup before such big decisions (like the marriage bond).
There are glimmers of brilliance here, scenes that shine with emotion and imagination, but the flow sometimes gets lost in the chaos. The magic system especially felt a little confusing, and some world details appeared abruptly (like the dragon introduction).
Still, S. Von’s creativity really stands out. The core idea of dreams as a bridge between worlds is something I haven’t seen done quite like this before. With a bit more structure and polish, I think this story could have been truly magical.

Wow okay so Hearts Burn Slow is such an interesting concept for a fantasy and I found myself bouncing back and forth between what is going on and flipping the pages because I need to know more! This read is a 3.75 ⭐️ rounded up to 4 for me.
I love so many aspects of this story, the dreams Layni experiences, bringing her to Fairy and living out this alternate life, the tumor invading her brain, creating this chaos of 'is it even real?', and the way her relationship with Greg so aptly shows how a toxic relationship can cause feelings of isolation and self doubt. I think for me personally I had a difficult time with Layni and Calyx's relationship. There felt like so much could have been explored with them, I was left feeling like I was on the outside looking in rather than a part of their growth. However, the chemistry is there, I think for me personally I just needed more time for them together to bloom.
Both these main characters are stubborn and set in their ways, yet it's clear they have this pull towards each other like no one else before. I enjoyed the first release of this book, but reading the rereleased I enjoyed the changes made.
The story is overall the same just with some changed or added details. Niko is a bigger part of the story and showed up in some of Layni’s dreams which I loved.
The addition of Layni not just deciding for herself to break the bargain, but seeming to be confused into believing she had decided made it more realistic on why she agreed so quickly.
If you have already read this I recommend re-reading it cause it does have a lot of good added details, if you haven't read it already I definitely recommend the read.

The potential is there in this book. I loved the premise and where it could go… it just fell a little flat for me. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either.
It felt like there was a lot of behind the scenes scheming that never made it to the light that would have cleared up a lot of confusion. Like Eviana… her villain arc made no sense to me. Where was her why?
Layni is such an interesting character. Writing novels in the human world that involved real people in the fae world all based on dreams?! I love that! And Calyx being a fae prince in her stories who is trying to save his world in real life?! Amazing!!! But the insta-love and acceptance of the bond with really no lead up lost me.
Overall, Serenity Von has a great writing style. The structure was good and the writing itself flowed naturally. I just needed more of, well, everything to make it really hit for me.

That said, the author’s willingness to take on such layered, complex subjects is admirable.

Hearts Burn Slow grabbed my attention with Layni’s struggle. She’s dealing with the reality of her diagnosis while also being drawn into Fairy through dreams that feel way too real. That tension between what she knows and what she feels made the story really interesting. Layni shows vulnerability, stubbornness, and strength, and I liked watching her try to balance both worlds.
Calyx definitely had the broody prince thing going on. I wished we got to see more of him beyond the surface, but his relationship with Layni was lovely. The moments where he let his guard slip made me want to know him better. I also really liked her best friend, who grounded Layni when things started to spiral.
The ending completely shocked me- I definitely wasn’t expecting it to stop the way it did! It left me wanting to pick up the next book right away. The setup of Fairy is interesting, and I hope the next story digs even deeper into that world. I’m curious to see where it all goes!

Ohhhh, I enjoyed this book!! The cover is what originally drew me in and then the blurb sold me on reading it! The mix of fae and human worlds? Yes, please. This is probably a weird thing that I liked, but I liked the unique spelling of the characters names, ha ha! Other than this, this book is packed full of some heavy themes and I actually appreciated that because so many of these things are relevant in the real world, every single day. That being said, I would check your trigger/content warnings before diving in because your mental health is important.
In my opinion, this book is a great read and I would definitely recommend it. You've got dreams, tension, mixing of realms, secrets, visions, etc. What more could you want? If you read an ebook, go ahead and find yourself a physical copy, because you're going to want a shelf trophy of this one! I would love to see this translated into an audio book, for sure!! Love it!

Layni is the FMC who is trying to come to terms knowing she needs a brain surgery, but having this surgery will stop her from having the dreams that helps her write her fantasy books. She doesn’t want to lose her access to the Fae world that she visits during her dreams. Then she meets Prince Calyx. He is the broody male that you just can’t help but be drawn to. Their connection is electric, they were meant to be, but it’s dangerous. He is from another world. I did not like her boyfriend Greg from the human world. There are so many layers to this story. The brain tumor, her journey as an author, the fae world, her dreams, and her struggles between reality and Fairy. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next. I was not ready for it to be over, I needed more. You will be hooked from the beginning!

What did i just read? I'm still confuso.
Layni is living the dream of many, yet sue manages to be unbearable, especially because of her inability to comminicate with anyone in the book.
The chemistry between her and Calyx, the Fae prince, was non existend and forcedb born out of nowere.
The villain is also unimpressive. Her plan is confusing and i didn't really understand what she wanted to do to destroy Fairy, or her motivations. Too unclear.
The structure of the book is unusual, and i don't Know if it's intentional but i found a bit cut off with a confusing and overly rushed ending.
In addition, a lot of info has been left unexplained, ad well ad characters who have been thrown into the mix whitout any real use or motivation.
The plot is good, enjoyable, but i didn't find the execution exceptional

This is a new author to me and she did not disappoint! I didn’t know exactly what to expect with this fantasy story but I rather enjoyed this journey.
It started out a little confusing for me, but that could have just been my ADD coming out, lol. This story goes from her real life human world to her fairy world that she writes about. But you will soon be wrapped up in both worlds and will have to decide is it a story or is it real? This was a cool read. An author writes fantasy novels based off her dreams. However, this comes at a cost due to a mass that her doctor believes she needs to have removed. She doesn't want to do this because it's led to her best writing yet, but it's negatively affecting her personal life.
It also showcases a one-sided relationship with her boyfriend but also the bond between her best friend. Interviews begin to stack on top of each other with the same question circling, "Do you believe?".
When Prince Calyx appears in person from her dreams and asks her the same question, everything begins to shift. Is Fairy real? Can she see it for herself? Why does he call her Flameheart?
There's definitely so much more to be explored with this story, and I can't wait to see where it goes!

Received this as an ARC from the author. It was a really interesting book. I liked how the author did visions of fairy with the whole brain tumor symptom. As a nurse it was quite an interesting take. I’m very curious as to what is going on in Fairy between the Gods and the Fae and the author does great to draw you in. I do wish there was a bit more detail about what exactly is going on though. I get that this is book 1 in a series but I was left feeling a bit confused on what is going on with the gods and how the protagonist is going to carry out their plan and why. I’m not sure if it was intentional because of the abuse she goes through with her boyfriend (Greg sucks) but the way Layni just goes along with everything & is wishy washy is also kind of annoying. Like making a bond with Calyx the MMC and then breaking it because someone told her too, & she didn’t get more information, then to just make another bond with him. There are times in the plot it is attempted to get more information but then it just kind of stops. Again this might be intentional since book 1 in series and it will develop. I’ll be reading the next book so I can see how this develops.

4 stars I was selected as an arc reader for this book and i really enjoyed this book it wasn’t very spicy or very romantic since this is the first book in the series but i think it was a good start to the world building and introductions to the main characters who are layni and calyx.Layni is a author and she was having trouble finding finishing her book to meet her deadline and she keeps having these dreams about a land ran by fae and that’s where calyx comes in he’s a prince of said land and asks layni for help and so they help each other out. The ending kind of leaves off on a happy for now but i need the second book already.

I have found yet another series that has been invested and biting my nails in anticipation of the next book! This was a very interesting story including fae, humans, bonds, deceit and secrets. There is so much more that we need to know! I had a feeling the ending was going in the direction it did. But there is more... and I look forward to how this continues! The worldbuilding is interesting and I can't wait to see what other magic we see from our characters. Especially since we get glimpses but not a whole lot since it's taboo to ask about another's powers.

Took a bit to lure me in, but the story was absolutely amazing - loved the plot, the characters, DEFINITELY eager to see more of Layni and Calyx and some of the others, glad she finally started standing up for herself as a result of her growth in the story and all - can’t wait to see how their bond and magic and time will intersect with all, how she’s going to balance her normal human life with her new life in Fairy, but can’t wait for the rest of the series - could not put it down - read the entire book in one day. Cannot recommend enough - can’t wait to see what kinds of special Ed just ions will hopefully come out because I imagine a cover with her new mark/tattoo would be GORGEOUS.

this was actually such a unique read! a mix between fantasy and a touch of medical/science combination.
i really loved how the real world and fantasy world were fused and connected, and how with just a portal, a fae could go in and out of different worlds just like that.
this was a different take on the fantasy genre that i'm used to reading but it was a very welcome one! i love the concept of Layni's dreams being an actual reality, just in a different world. Calyx is just this perfectly mysterious, brooding fae prince that is just the epitome of what a strong and powerful MMC is.
i really loved reading this, and i'm looking forward to the next book!!!

This is the first book of The Broken States on Chaos series. We have Fae’s and humans trying save Fairy. Latin is a written things a tumor and her dreams are what her stories are made of. When The Fae Prince Calayx comes into the human world to ask Layni to help him save his fae world. Her relationship with Greg was so toxic and I was yelling at her to leave . We also have Nikos and I am curious to know more about this character. I was provided this arc by the author Serenity Von for my honest review. This is a fantasy romance with magic and Serenity really made me enjoy reading this story.

I found this concept fascinating as well as creative. Although I enjoyed this story the toxic relationship that Layni had with her boyfriend was exhausting to read and made me lose a little interest but pushed ahead to enjoy the world building of the fae realm and Layni’s journey into a new world.

This romantic fantasy has a unique story I have never came across in all the books I've read, which was refreshing. The writing style is beautifully written and very descriptive to help you paint a vivid picture of the face realm this book lives in. And without giving any spoilers, this book will have you guessing and gasping at the plot twist in the story at every turn. I LOVED IT! I look forward to reading book 2, to see what happens in this world next. Thank you S.Von for creating this masterpiece!

I gave this book a solid 4 stars. I had some issues getting into it at first that were completely ME! Not the writing itself! I had a really hard time disassociating with the nickname used for FMC because it is the nickname of a very popular FMC in a very large series. That's all I'll say about that because it was a ME issue I believe. Other than that...the story was great. I was about to be really mad at the ending though! I mean it was redeemed but I was mad for about 3 chapters! Haha IYKYK I definitely think I would visit this world again. Good read!

Hearts Burn Slow is book one of The Broken States of Chaos Series.
There are some moments where I wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't. Is it all because of tumor or is it real? This really keeps you guessing until the last moment.
I enjoyed the intense fantasy moments. Having the story flip between reality and fantasy was quite interesting and it kept you on your toes with wondering what was going on. Very enjoyable read.

The beginning of this book was a little hard to follow as we were pretty much thrown in & out of Layni's dreams & thats pretty much where we start. My heart felt really heavy for Layni with her struggles with her diagnosis & the reality of it all really hits her🥺
She shows a lot of vulnerability & how stubborn she can be throughout this book.
Id have liked to have learnt some more about Calyx, he definitely gave me the broody prince vibes😏
I cant wait for the next book🖤
