A debut high-stakes fantasy romance trilogy set against a once-in-a-generation duel to the death between rival witches and dragon riders as they battle to control the source of all magic in their kingdoms. Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, and Quicksilver.

You duel or you die.

Astrid has always known she is destined to die. She is the last Nachstern witch and heir to the Queendom of Arturea, cursed by a centuries-old covenant to duel the heir to the Kingdom of Vatra for the source of all magic: the Heart. And now Astrid’s time is up. She is heading into enemy territory to face Prince Zryan, the most powerful dragon rider in eons, with only her familiar, her potions, and her wits to aid her. She is going to die, and any chance her queendom has of curing the Blight that’s ravaging the lands and killing her people will die with her.

Meanwhile, deep in dragon country, Skylar and her travelling troupe arrive in Vatra’s capital, ready to profit off the legions of spectators swarming to the city ahead of the duel. She despises the royals and all they stand for, especially as the King’s guard murdered her mother. But when her best friend disappears, suspected to have been taken in the conscription, her search takes her closer to the royals than she ever could have imagined.

As the duel looms over the kingdom, Skylar and Astrid’s fates intertwine. They must battle a growing rebellion, their inner demons, and ultimately, those they love most, to determine if together they will save—or doom—their world.

Hugeee thanks to NetGalley & the publishers for a chance to review this ARC!!

3.25✨
Blood bound is a very ambitious debut. The plot is intriguing and the series has potential.

This book incorporates a lot of interesting & unique elements. There are some structural, pacing & writing flow issues that could be fixed in editing. There were lots of elements thrown into this story and they sometimes didn’t flow with one another.

The action scenes were underwhelming and I think it could’ve been edited down. I wish we would’ve gotten more interactions with Baxter, he was a very nice addition to the story.

The set of characters is intriguing but not quite fleshed out. It was interesting to find some mental health representation with Astrid. I do believe more focus could’ve been included. She also had an intriguing element for me ; potions. Though they were mentioned a few times, I wish more parts would’ve included the preparation and making of. Zryan was a fickle character, Skylar was interesting and Axel was underdeveloped. The best character ARC was Skylar. Astrid’s mom is one character I didn’t quite grasp. The secondary characters could’ve been more fleshed out. They were on page when they were convenient to the storyline, which is why I felt indifferent towards them.

It’s very insta-lust/love between Astrid & Zryan and all of their first conversations were extremely sexual. It didn’t fit right with the slightly juvenile writing. The fact that he was so beautiful is mentioned a lot and it was repetitive.

I will admit I was a little thrown off by the nicknames (Lar Lar, little dragon, little witch, dimples…). The ending was also semi-predictable and some structural issues remain. I’m left with a lot of unanswered questions.

I did like how the climate changes were woven into the story. I think this series has a lot of potential.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

Wow. What an amazing debut from this author duo! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It distills a lot of great fantasy elements into a well thought out story.

Our two main characters, Skylar and Astrid, I liked equally. There is a certain strength that both of them have that makes them so easy to root for. If I had to choose, I’d probably say I do think Astrid’s storyline was more compelling. Her worries and doubts and fears bleed through the pages and are well developed. I feel like Skylar is more one note in a way with her rage. I wish we had gotten flashbacks of her past, because really her whole story revolves around choices she makes for the benefit of her best friend Cam. Unfortunately we never see Cam, and the lack of connection to him makes it hard to really see why Skylar is doing these things beyond the basics.

Our side character cast could be a bit larger I think k for a world of this scope, but I enjoyed all the ones we got. Jessa and Gwen were the highlights for me!

Astrid and Zy’s relationship is cute. I think it may be a bit too fast of a burn for my own personal taste, but they’re really cute together!

The plot itself is well paced and very engaging. There are several plot twists thrown into various spots in the book, which makes it super fun to theorize. The worldbuilding could be fleshed out a tad more (I feel we don’t really understand Astrid’s home country as we never really see it) but I loved the attention to history of the duel. It’s fascinating and the emphasis put on history that may not be true is something I ALWAYS adore in novels. The search for the truth is engaging and leads the plot in a direction I did not fully anticipate but fully love.

I did struggle with the writing style at the beginning. Third person present is a finicky POV to nail. I got used to it quickly enough but a few lines just seemed odd to have an objective narrator have.

The ending I think could have used maybe 20 more pages to really breathe with ALL of the reveals we get, but as I said, I’m all for the direction we’re going in.

If you’re a fan of fantasy romance, you’ll surely enjoy this book and probably be refreshed by its twists on certain classic tropes of the genre. I for one am so excited to read book 2!

Pre read comments haha:

This sounds so cool but I need to know….is it sapphic?? 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Edit: book 3 will have sapphic content!! ☺️☺️

MARK MY WORDS, THIS WILL BE THE FANTASY BOOK OF THE YEAR AND IT'S GOING TO BE BIG.

You've got everything you could want in a perfect romance fantasy: dragons, fully fleshed out characters, a new hot book boyfriend with the best slowburn, destined enemies to friends, unique rich worldbuilding and the most adorable familiars. And did I already mention dragons??

If you liked Fourth Wing, read this because this is even better.

Blood Bound is an incredibly fresh debut within all the fantasy releases we've been getting. I know books can easily feel repetitive when they follow the same formula, but this one massively stands out.
The main reason being the friendship that forms between both main characters. Having a dual POV format only adds to it and you can't help but fall in love with Astrid and Skylar and root for them. Them and their familiars/dragons who have their own unique personalities and will quickly win you over.

The world building itself is rich and unique with a plot you can not look away from and a plot twist you won't see coming. And even though friendship is the core of the story, we've also got the best romance with fun banter and an insanely well written slowburn that will make you ache for more. (Zryan, the man you are...)

So yes, add this to your TBR, because this is going to be BIG. And I'm already in dire need of book 2.

Fantastic debut from this writing duo! I’m still thinking about the ending a few days later. I can see this being a hit for 2026 so add this to your TBRs!

Astrid, heir to the witch kingdom, has been prepared to die her entire life. As the heir, she must duel Prince Zryan, a dragon rider, for control of the Heart, which is the source of magic on their continent. She knows her chances are extremely slim with only potions at her disposal. Only she doesn’t anticipate a troupe performer, Skylar, to interrupt those plans. Skylar is on the hunt for her only friend when her fate becomes intertwined with Astrid’s. They must both work together to save those they love and somehow survive the dangers surrounding them.

There are so many interesting storylines in this! The growing rebellion, dragons, history of the realm, and mysterious characters kept me intrigued. The first fourth of the book is a little slow to get through but the second half really picks up. The bond between Astrid and Skylar is another strength of this book. I loved seeing how their friendship grew despite being on opposing sides.

The romance and spice is there but it’s not the sole focus. The other storylines are much stronger and held my interest more. I think the secondary characters could have used more development to help make some plot points hit harder.

I was genuinely surprised by the ending and am very excited to see where everything goes. Book 2 can’t come soon enough! Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Pat on the backs for Ellis Hunter.
A perfect example of a debut fantasy.
Witches, dragon riders, dragons and familiars. Some of my favourite parts of fantasy novels.
The plot was THICK, I was really kept on my toes with this one.
I was petrified of turning the page to see what was coming my way next.
I loved the world, the world building was the perfect amount for me, it wasn’t on an epic scale and I much prefer that when there’s so much more to digest in the form of the characters and their relationships.
You’ve got lies, betrayals, scheming, assassinations, grief, love, friendship and all of them were done well.
Chapter 37 broke my heart and had me in tears, Chapter 38 had me bouncing up and down with excitement.
All in all top marks for me, I am very eager to continue this story and I’m gutted that book 2 will be so far away 💔

5⭐️| OUT May 7th 2026

It took me nearly 3 weeks to gather my thoughts for this review because I still think about this MASTERPIECE of a book everyday!

This is high-stakes fantasy with a sprinkle of romance at its very best. The dual POVs written by two authors lends itself to the two FMCs having a really strong voice, Having two FMCs is uncommon but boy did I love this. Ellis Hunter nails it on the head with the alternate POV chapters and the pacing really does pack a strong punch with building up the tension. This is really one of the best paced books I have read in a long time. Eventhough I guessed some of the twists the plot of this book was incredibly satisfying. The world building was truly immaculate.

What you can expect:
♥️ female friendships
💙 smart-arse cat, dragons and other familiars (who also talk!)
♥️ trauma
💙 twisty plot
♥️ big simp Zryan
💙 mental health representation

I highly recommend this book to anyone who can read, honestly you don't want to miss out on the biggest romantasy of 2026. I am truly lucky to have read this early!

The story follows two women on opposite sides of a magical war who end up sharing a connection that’s way deeper than either of them expected. The emotional depth between Astrid and Skylar absolutely carried the book for me. I was not expecting to be as invested in their bond as I was. I instantly liked Zryan, and I'm glad that my gut feeling was correct about him. He was a surprise, and even though the romance is not the main focus point of this story it was a great addition to the overall plot.

With that being said, the first 30% is ROUGH. There’s a lot of world building right off the bat, and it can feel like an information dump before things get moving. But once you get over the world building, it gets better.

Also, there are dragons !!! Along with other magical familiars with standout personalities, and some really cool twists on the “fated mates” trope that make this stand out from other fantasy romances.

This book brings something new to the table, and I can see a lot of dragon loving readers enjoying this one. However, the cliffhanger is brutal, so prepare yourself.

Wow…wow…wow! I received an ARC from the publisher Atria Books through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. ❤️

Initially, I wanted to take a few days before writing my review, but who am I kidding…I know what I am going to say!

THIS BOOK WAS SOOOO GOOD!

Witches, familiars, dragon riders, fated mates, a duel to the death!

The story successfully included so many of my favorite fantasy elements while making it fresh and unique. Not an easy thing to do…and this is a debut novel!

The writing style was easy to read with dual POVs of our two FMCs. There was just enough world building to fully immerse you without being too heavy. The pacing was steady throughout without any lulls and I found myself looking forward to each new chapter.

The characters were likable and relatable Smartly written with good dialog. The romance was a super slow burn and didn’t have a lick of cheesiness. NOT A SINGLE EYE ROLL! The dragons and familiars were awesome and I couldn’t get enough of them.

The plot was nicely laid out with surprises along the way. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was proven wrong in the best way!

The only complaint I have for being one of the first ARC readers, is just how long I will now have to wait for book two.

I highly recommend this book to all readers, not just fantasy enthusiasts. And if this doesn’t become a BookTok sensation, then BookTok is broken. 🤣😂

Wow?! What a book to start 2025 with. This book was full of tension and the writing was so addictive. The twists had me gripped and the plot was both fun and unique.

We have witches and their familiars and dragon riders and their dragons, and I have to say I bloody love magical animal companions. Bastet has my heart and I'll always have a spot for Quincy too. 💙

I loved the characters and really felt both their love and joy as well as their pain and fear. I'm not sure a book has ever made me giggle and kick my feet so much only to then to make me sob a few pages down the line. And I really think that is a testament to just how well connected to the characters I felt when reading this.

Reading a book with powerful female characters is always something I enjoy but the way the authors allowed so much of the focus of the book to be on platonic love, friendship and girlhood, not just intimate love, was clever and powerful and honestly, heart-warming in the best way.

I cannot wait to see this book get all of the lovd it deserves upon release, it was formidable and I'm ready to re-read already!

Thank you so so much to the incredible authors for sending me a proof copy of this book early.

Blood Bound is a solid debut fantasy novel by Ellis Hunter. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t become one of the most popular fantasies of 2026. This book has everything that a fantasy lover enjoys. Enemies to lovers, witches, dragon riders, familiars (ily Bastet🖤), betrayal, fated mates, heartbreak, found family.

This book is dual POV following Astrid the last witch of her queendom and Skylar a dagger juggler in a traveling troupe. Astrid (the witch princess of Arturea) and Zryan (the crown prince of Vatra) have to battle it out in a once in a generation duel to see who’s family will control the Heart, which is the source of all magic for both kingdoms. In the midst of battle preparation, Astrid and Zryan meet Skylar and their lives all intertwine into something much bigger than anyone expected.

I will say the first 10-15% of this book was very clunky with world building. It was a bit hard to trudge through but then we’re hit with a big plot twist and the story speeds up from there.

There’s a lot of plot lines going on in this book but it’s easy to follow. I will say my only complaint is I wish some of these plot lines had a little more depth to them. Because there was so much going on I didn’t feel like we were able to go deeper than scratching the surface of a few major plot points and characters.

What I loved most about this book was the found family and the theme of friendship. Strong bonds were created in this book that gave me all the warm and fuzzies (looking at you Kaida and Bastet) And let’s not forget the banter! Skylar was my absolute favorite character. Nearly everything that came out of her mouth had me chuckling.

Blood Bound had a lot of nods to books that I love; Throne of Glass, Fourth Wing, Game of Thrones. I’m excited to continue on with this series…. Especially after that GINORMOUS cliffhanger.

This was one of my favorite fantasy/romantasy books I’ve read in a bit. It’s dual POV, but not between the love interests. The two main characters are female. There are two kingdoms on the verge of war and the heirs will fight to the death for control of the magic that will sustain their kingdoms. Magic, dragons, court intrigue, unexpected alliances ensue. Can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out. 4.5 stars. Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC.

No you don’t understand I’m OBSESSED. What a way to end the year with a book so full of heart, pain, hope, devastation, and so much more. I loved actually every single minute of this book and never wanted to put it down. Definitely never wanted it to end and I need book two NOW!!!!

If you love romantasy, you will LOVE this I promise. It has everything from enemies to 🫢, to found family, to mystery and secrets, to dragons and familiars, while also being so unique and different from other romantasy books. I truly did not know where this story would take me and was truly stressing in the last 20%. I cannot wait to continue this trilogy and will be thrilled when everyone picks this up next year!!!

This is gonna be THE romantasy book of 2026.

I received an advance copy of Blood Bound by Ellis Hunter through NetGalley, and overall, this was an engaging and enjoyable read. The story drew me in quickly. I completely fell in love with Skyler and Astrid: their dynamic, emotional depth, and growth carried the heart of the book and kept me invested from beginning to end. Strong job building tension and momentum while leaving enough unanswered questions to make the broader story feel expansive. This is a solid beginning into what promises to be a compelling series, and I’ll absolutely be picking up the next book! I’m eagerly awaiting what comes next for these characters.

Um how am I supposed to ever recover from this?!

This book is a powerhouse. We follow Skylar and Astrid on a journey of self-discovery, adventure, loss, acceptance and friendship through the span of 496 pages. I quite literally could not put the book down for the last 40%.

These characters are so lovable and well-rounded that it made for the best reading experience. Reading this book felt like coming home, sending me waves of nostalgia to all the fantasy books that got me into reading. I became fully emerged into a the world, it feeling refreshing and unique.

The themes of sisterhood and loss are woven so intricately throughout this book. I feel as though this made the characters feel even more real and impactful to me and I really do applaud Ellis Hunter for the way they handled this. Skylar's journey in particular meant a lot to me and I feel very connected to her character. The book really does highlight that you are never as alone as you think you are, and there will always be someone in your corner, even if that someone is who you least expect.

Get ready to meet your new book boyfriend because you are not ready for Zyran.

apologies to the authors for the insane number of DMs I sent them whilst reading this but I'm going to need book 2 immediately....

The amount of times I said “wtf!!!!” in this book!!! I am a theorizer, and the amount of times I didn’t see something coming or was shocked was a lot 🤪 I think Astrid’s storyline pulled to me more, I connected with multiple aspects about her. But also loved what Skylar brought to the table as well. The familiars 😩 also love love love. I want to put all of them in my pocket even Bjorn lmao. I’m over here with my head on the table crashing out trying to get my thoughts together over this book and that ending 😩 this book destroyed me multiple times and I was up until 2 am reading last night ( it has been SO LONG since I have done that lol ) I also shed a few tears iykyk. It’s been 30 books since my last 5 star rating. I need to process before I can accurately portray my love for this one.

Updated:

Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. What an amazing adventure this book was. It had all of my favorite things: action from the beginning, twists and turns, an underdog story, a rebellion, dragons and other animal familiars! I am going to be raving about this book to everyone I know.

Astrid is the last heir of the Nachstern Witches. She’s been preparing all her life for the once-in-generation duel to the death with the neighboring kingdom’s dragon rider heir over who gets to control the magic of the land. Zryan is the epitome of what any perfect warrior would be. So Astrid is essentially preparing to die. As Astrid prepares for the duel, she meets several new people, including Skylar, with whom she has two goals in common: to save their people and to stay alive.

I’d like to thank Atria Books via NetGalley for providing an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Blood Bound has changed me forever.

This debut novel from Ellis Hunter had me hooked from the first chapter. I love how detailed the world building was throughout the whole book, and the character development was phenomenal. I truly felt every emotion the characters experienced and the stakes always felt high.

I especially loved the non binary representation from Fionn and I wish we got to interact with their character more. The subject of grief was handled beautifully, it was extremely raw and real.

The pacing felt consistent while also having lulls that felt natural and needed, allowing emotional scenes to land. Some plot twists were more predictable than I hoped but I don’t think it took away from the overall story being told.

My only complaint? I wish it was longer, because I didn’t want to leave this world so soon!

I’ll be waiting (impatiently) for book two, because that ending had me on the edge of my seat and I need more asap. Please please please read Blood Bound when it releases. You won’t be disappointed.

I was honestly very impressed with this book. I think the authors did an amazing job. The bond that Astrid and Skylar have is so heartwarming. This book contains familiars, dragons, and a magic system that is new to me with how it all went together cohesively. My favorite thing is what they did with mates and the twist that they applied there. This book has a little bit of everything but amazingly gives everything the attention it deserves. I will be picking up book two when it is released and am excited to see what comes next. *I was provided an ARC by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Blood Bound has several things going for it - dragons, familiars, enemies-to-lovers, witches, and an intriguing hook. It's executed similarly to Fourth Wing, with accessible language and straightforward worldbuilding. While admittedly not the most fleshed-out fantasy story I've read, I was initially extremely hooked. For the first 85% of this book, I could not put it down - and I'm a new mom! Finding free time to read is rare, but I devoured this in just a few days. I blasted through chapters and ignored some of the more blatantly ripped scenes (there are Game of Thrones and Fourth Wing moments here that feel way too similar) because I was having so much fun reading it. Unfortunately, the last 15% of the book threw me completely off course. I was very much not a fan of the ending AT ALL, and I don't even know if I'll want to read the future books in this series. I was very much anticipating this to be one of my favorite books of the year, but I am so disappointed.

The spoilers below are all of the strange things that really threw me because I need to get them off my chest.

Blood Bound had some of my favorite fantasy being such as witches , dragons and familiars and I think the way Ellis Hunter made a world where they all co-exist was cohesive. This book is centered around two heirs, one of the dragon riders and the witches. They both have to fight to death, the book was built around that but came into so much more about a kingdom wavering and a rebel movement. The two FMC both have a POV and I was locked into each of their stories and how they are interconnected. Although romance is in here and I love the couple it’s not the center which I enjoyed to. The plot was so good and the ending left my jaw drop, the last 25% will do you in. Cannot wait to continue. Thank you got an e-arc

I am absolutely devastated to be writing this review. I did not love this book and it’s breaking my heart. I wanted to love it so bad. It was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and I literally jumped for joy when I got a digital arc. Then, when I got a physical arc, I let out the most horrific shrieking sound and genuinely forgot how to breathe for a few seconds. I was beyond excited. I cleared my reading schedule for a bit to simply focus on this book and dive into its world and characters. I saved character art posted on the instagram of the authors so I could look at it while reading. And then, I finally sat down to read.

And my heart broke. The writing style made this a struggle to get through. It’s third person, and some of my all time favorite books are written in third person, but it needs to be done in a certain way to really hook me. And in the case of Blood Bound, the third person felt weirdly robotic for me. I can’t tell if it got better as the book went on or if I just got used to it, but the beginning is especially difficult to get into.

We also have two main female characters, and with them, we have to separate plots that converge into one. I liked Skylar’s plot a lot more than Astrid’s, which I feel like is very out of character for me because Astrid is the one we know from the start is going to be in the duel. But I found the mystery and rage in Skylar’s plot to be much more engaging for me personally. Skylar did also feel a bit like an afterthought though because her chapters aren’t as flushed out as Astrid’s.

This is absolutely a story of feminine rage and the different ways it can shape us. The role the world plays to shape us is at the forefront of the book.

Also just a heads up, this is very much a fantasy book, but there’s modern stuff in it. I don’t think I’d call it urban fantasy, but it’s definitely not a high fantasy.

I think I’m team dragon. Ask me again in 20 minutes, and I might not be any more.

Thank you very much to Atria Books for a physical and digital arc, and NetGalley for supplying the digital arc.
