About the author

Han Suyin (Pinyin: Hán Sùyīn) is the pen name of Elizabeth Comber, born Rosalie Elisabeth Kuanghu Chow (Pinyin: Zhōu Guānghú). She was a Chinese-born Eurasian author of several books on modern China, novels set in East Asia, and autobiographical works, as well as a physician. She wrote in English and French. She died in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2012.

picked this up at a second-hand bookstore for 50 forints (i.e. next to nothing) and have been pleasantly surprised by how much i'm enjoying han's autobiography as it winds its way through asia and its happenings in the mid-20th century. the prose is sometimes heavy-handed and pompous, but other times lyrical and succinct.

I picked up all my Han Suyin books from second hand bookstores and I have a good collection. She is a brilliant person and I love many of her books. This book is autobiographical and gave a good understanding of her life and her choices
