Oh Heidi, must you always be the center of attention?

When Heidi's best friend gets glasses, of course Heidi wants them too, especially when she realizes how much attention Lucy is getting because of them. So she does what any witch would - she convinces people she needs glasses too. Now she's got headaches and can't see where she's going. Poor Heidi! Will you never learn?

Heidi lies to get glasses because she thinks they'll make her look cool but she learns an important lesson about telling the truth. There is still some caddiness and some things I don't love in this series, but overall this was cute.

Heidi decides she wants glasses because her friend Lucy got glasses and everyone wanted to be friends with her. Lucy got on the wall of fame in their classroom because she got glasses. Whenever something exciting happens to someone, they go on the wall of fame. Heidi's Aunt Trudy once made braces out of tinfoil to look like she had them. I did that while I was reading this book. Heidi pretends to fail her eye test to get glasses and then she can't see anything WITH them. She thought 3 was 8 and 8 was 3. I borrowed my mom's glasses and it was a little blurry but I could still read words perfectly. In the end, her aunt figures out that she doesn't need glasses and gets rid of them.

Heidi wants to be cool because Lucy gets all the attention when she gets her new glasses. Heidi comes home and asks her mom if she can have glasses. Her mom says no because she likes Heidi the way she is and Heidi doesn't need glasses. I think that Heidi learned a lesson because Heidi pretended she needed glasses so she could go to the eye doctor and get glasses. When she got glasses, they felt weird on her and it was even harder for her to see. She learns to be careful what she wishes for and she learns to be honest.

Heidi wants to be on the wall of fame in her classroom and decides to get glasses to earn a spot. She purposely fails the eye tests and when she receives the glasses she is in for a surprise. Things don't get better and we learn that Heidi and her aunt like to chant spells. Interesting since this is only the second book of the series I have read. Does prove not to want something that will make things worse for you.

I think that this book teaches you that you don't have to get what you want to look cool like glasses, braces, and other stuff.
I think that because when Heidi got glasses, it caused a lot of trouble with her eye sight.

Heidi saw four letters and a number but she didn't read them that way, Dr. Chen asked to Heidi to read two more lines. D, Chen shined a light in Heidi's eyes, he told her to look up and down and from side to side.

A good one to share the reading with your elementary-aged daughter.

My daughter always loves Heidi! Good lessons involved, but of course chaos on the way to learning the lesson.

Heidi H. reminds me of Fancy Nancy - but a couple of years older and instead of fanciness there is lite magic. Not as clever as Ivy and Bean but wishes she was.

I like this book because she acts really funny in it. There is one thing to know before reading this book- you never need to show off your new glasses. 👓

Opening: Have any of your friends ever worn something to school that you thought was really cool? Were any of those things so cool that you really wanted one, too? This is what happens to Heidi Heckelbeck when her friend Lucy arrives at school with a new pair of glasses. Heidi gets especially jealous when everybody at school, especially their teacher Mrs. Welli, notices Lucy’s glasses all day. Heidi gets SO jealous that she makes her parents AND the eye doctor think she needs glasses, even though she doesn’t. Can you guess what this causes? All kinds of problems! As we read, watch for all the problems Heidi’s unneeded glasses cause and how she finds out she can be cool WITHOUT having the same cool thing as her friend.

Identify Opening Moves: Invite personal connections, raise interest in a topic or theme. prompt listeners to notice details, raise questions in the reader’s minds.

Rationale: This is a great intermediate chapter book that would be a good independent read or read aloud book in a unit on Empathy and Acceptance. What I especially like about this book and what makes it different from the other three is that it shows what happens when someone tries to change themselves to be like someone else or because they don’t yet accept/understand their own differences—and the difficulties and problems this can cause. Again, it helps students understand that differences are good and cool and can even help friends become better friends.

Summary:
When Heidi Heckelbeck’s best friend Lucy Lancaster shows up to school wearing glasses, Heidi becomes very jealous of the attention Lucy receives. Heidi doesn’t need glasses, but she wants everyone to think that she is cool, too. So Heidi makes a plan- she will fail her eye test on purpose in order to get glasses. Heidi loves her new look, but she can’t see a thing with her glasses on! Will Heidi keep wearing them to be cool or will she realize that she is special without them?

Bloom's Taxonomy:
Analyzing: What is the relationship between Lucy and Heidi?
Analyzing: How would you compare Heidi getting glasses to Lucy getting glasses?
Evaluating: Why was it better when Heidi took off her glasses?
Evaluating: If you were in Heidi’s situation, would you have lied to get a new pair of glasses?
Evaluating: Do you agree with Heidi lying in order to get what she wanted? Why or why not?

I suppose on the surface this book is about kids wanting for feel special. And Heidi's got a point: she may be a witch, but as she can't exactly share that (no one mentions why this must be kept a secret), her picture will never get to be on Mrs. Welli's bulletin board. Speaking of that, I know Mrs. Welli wants to make the kids who have what the traditional adult world thinks are handicaps (glasses, missing teeth, broken legs, etc.) feel special. But that drive has turned those events into milestones and made the kids wish they could "achieve" those milestones. We had a great discussion on adaptive technologies and the notion of "specialness" when we read this book; it's too bad Mrs. Welli didn't grow from this experience as much as Heidi.

Heidi's friend, Lucy, gets glasses and all kinds of attention. Heidi feels left out and jealous and decides that she needs glasses as well. After faking her way through an eye doctor exam, Heidi gets her wish and gets glasses. The trouble is, now she cannot see anything!

This book is a great source for discussion about what makes people special. Back story on Heidi is she is a witch, and that is something she is not able to share with everyone, but it makes her special. She is envious of Lucy's attention and wants people to see her as special as well. There is also room for discussion on lying to your parents and what can happen when you do not tell the truth. I think this book will be perfect of one of younger book clubs.

This was pretty cute, if I were younger I could see being interested in reading the whole series. I was kind of lost near the end, with the aunt being a witch - that's what happens when you don't read any other books in the series, I suppose.

It's funny how getting glasses was a BIG THING in the early 90s. Like, there was an episode of Full House about Stephanie getting glasses, a Baby-sitters Little Sister book where Karen had to get two pairs... I just feel like glasses are so common nowadays, you don't need fictional characters to tell you it's cool anymore.

I didn't realize that Heidi was a witch and had magical powers until chapter 7, so that threw me off at first because up until that point it was reading like realistic fiction. Heidi is 8 years old and is jealous of all the attention her friend is getting when she gets new glasses. Heidi is spunky and very realistic. I liked her and thought some of my second grade readers would like her too. It's a longer chapter book with 10 chapters and some black and white illustrations. At first I considered giving the book a 3, but after finishing the book I decided on a 4.
