A brilliant architect from Dharavi envisions a radical new design for Mumbai. But when every architecture firm rejects this slum dog, he enters a virtual fantasy world to build out his dreams.
Even as his real-life money runs out, he must quickly learn the rules of this new world and battle powerful online rivals. Because at stake is a prize.
A prize that could catapult our hero and his family out of poverty. . . out of the slums. . . . And gift him the chance to transform the city he loves.
Imagine you're a corporate employee (you don't have to if you're one). When was the last time you noticed the cleaning crew? Said thanks to a janitor? But wait, what if that janitor is hiding under your table, listening to all the strategies and design details? Listening and Learning. And then using that knowledge to better the projects made by you? The modern day Eklavya.
Javed the janitor wants to be an architect. His father wants him to take a job of site supervisor that, apart from a regular salary of twenty five thousand rupees a month, will also get him a respectable and "nice yellow jacket and a helmet also”. Javed of course has other plans, correcting the pillars (Not Corinthian but Doric) in the models of lazy interns working in the architect firm where he mopes and reads books, using an excuse of 'dusting Then' thoroughly even if they are meant for just decorative purposes.
Amidst all this upheavals in his life, his constant anchor is Shefali, his childhood sweetheart. He wants to be together but first has to earn enough to convince her bitter father. Sukriti, like any author worth her salt, humanises this bitter man too. She writes: "Her father was not a happy man. He’d burned to be an actor, but instead been pushed into a mercantile life and marriage to a simple woman. His bitter conviction that he could’ve been a hero now leaked out of him in boasts and brags, in parading his best and biggest possessions. Shefali didn’t intend for her future husband to be like that too.'
Shefali introduces Javed to HomeGame. The engineers who coded HomeGame are the original Alpha Builders but a player can adapt their designs into something new, qualifying as a Beta Builder. This sends bella ringing in Javed's curious mind. So he can design Mumbai in an entirely new way? Why not.
But what really happens? Does Javed manage to impress his boss at the architect firm for designing something better than those who actually have studied in expensive schools? Or does he, forced to look after rumbling stomach, ends up in the 25k/month jobx as advised by his drunk of a father? And what this HomeGame is going to have a place in his life? Will it catapult him into a new glory? Or will he reduced to a goggled addict? Will he be able to capitalise on the prospect of a builders' competition, where the prize money stands at 25 lakh. Also look out for the crazy funny way of blocking a spam account inside the game. It will crack you up into giggles. Also, look out for what Javed does with Antila.
It's a delight to read and author's work who's at the top of her game. Sukriti's prose is sharp and smooth at the same time. Like a quill searing through butter. She drops many references and I was googling everything frantically, learning new things in every page: Sameep Padors's temple of steps, Mies van der Rohe, material used in construction of Delhi's Lotus Temple, Egypt's Karnak Temple, Mumbai's Asiatic Library, House of Infinie and so much more. I loved the numerous architectureal references strewn throughout the book. The author writes: “It’s believed that good architecture should be memorable enough to draw and recognise with just a few lines.”
The author adds a touch of social issues and political concerns, mixing her story with a strong socio-political commentary on poverty tourism (you can always identify the rich people visiting slums of Dharavi by their gaze always trained upon their expensive shoes lest they get dirty.) Also, look out for a paragraph on how different poverty is in developing and developed nations. She also talks about a facelift project for Dharavi slim in Mumbai.
The book is well equipped with an emotional heft and a game's addictive adventurous world. Javed is written neatly. His hand will definitely pull your heartstrings. There is a lot of wonder that Beta Builder offers. Let yourself dive in.
Sukriti YJ’s Beta Builder is a bold and imaginative novel that fuses social realism with virtual escapism, weaving a narrative that is as much about survival in Mumbai’s slums as it is about the liberating possibilities of digital worlds.
The protagonist, a gifted architect whose visionary designs for Mumbai are repeatedly dismissed by traditional firms. His journey into a virtual environment is not merely an escape, but a reassertion of agency—an attempt to craft, quite literally, the future he is denied in the real world.
This dual narrative—struggling against systemic poverty offline while battling rivals online—keeps the tension alive and adds layers of metaphor.
The “beta building” becomes more than a technical term; it signifies constructing hope out of incomplete systems, both social and digital.
The novel highlights pressing themes of class, urban inequality, and the democratizing potential of technology. Dharavi is not reduced to stereotype; instead, it is presented as a crucible of ingenuity, resilience, and latent talent.
The same time, the depiction of the virtual world critiques globalized techno-capitalism, where even digital utopias are governed by competition, gatekeeping, and high stakes.
Sukriti writes with cinematic flair—clearly aware of the visual richness of both slumscapes and virtual environments. The prose is accessible, often brisk, propelling the reader forward with the same urgency the hero feels as his money dwindles. However, in places the narrative does lean heavily on familiar tropes from gaming fiction, which may feel predictable to seasoned readers of speculative fiction. Yet, the cultural grounding in Mumbai gives it a fresh and distinctive identity, rescuing it from cliché.
In sum, Beta Builder succeeds as both an inspirational underdog story and a thoughtful exploration of how marginalized voices might claim space in both physical and digital architectures.
An energetic, socially conscious tale that blends the grit of reality with the thrill of virtual dreams. While it borrows familiar beats from popular narratives, it's Mumbai setting and focus on architecture give it originality and depth.
