Masters & Makers #6

As Makers Dreamt

Rate this book
The conspirators return home…

Following another humiliating defeat by Masters and Makers, Prince Valentino leads the vanquished Sanctians back to Portonuncia. Knowing what the price of failure will be, Valentino plots with Sebastian and Hydar against Emperor Antonio, who plans to punish them for the loss of Geathan. The conspiracy will divide the imperial family further, between those who remain loyal to Antonio, and those who would support a usurper.

Walking a thin line between the two sides, Princess Saffie knows that one wrong decision could see her life destroyed. She has her new marriage to the irresponsible and reckless Francesco to negotiate; and when a tenacious young lawyer by the name of Amery starts to investigate the unsolved death of Prince Stephano, Saffie can feel the noose tighten around her.

About Me

I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

This is a great next book in the series, but this time more focused on the Emperor and Saffie and the uncles and extended family. The book is a little slow burn whilst we get reintroduced to everyone following their poor showing in the previous book. Some of the Royal Family are scared for their lives and essentially want to overthrow the Emperor in order to protect themselves and then on the other hand you have those in the palace who are looking out for themselves and coming to terms with the events of a couple of books back. Essentially everyone is looking out for themselves and you have the anti masters and makers department searching for everyone.

The emperor's behavior when his brother returns from losing Geathan is very predictable and extremely sad! We pick up as Valentino and family are approaching Sanctos and deciding what to do about their fate. The machinations are aplenty, the emperor and his family are quite divided, and we get to spend some time with Saffie's brothers and father. Everyone fears arriving at the same fate as the inhabitants of the White Tower and there is a maker who is so powerful they can manifest live animals. The twists and turns will keep you on your toes and the world and character building do not disappoint! Another great book by this author and I highly recommend it!

This, the 6th book in the series, is set completely in the capital of Sanctos. It follows the royal family and the rival factions who support Emperor Antonio or the contender to take his place. I loved the way that the plot develops in this book. It is fast paced and nail-bitingly suspenseful at times. The plot twists and turns and you are constantly wondering who is going to come out on top. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it along with any other of Christopher Mitchell's excellent fantasy works. I eagerly await the next installment.

ARC Review: One never knows what twists and turns will take place from book to book. Heck, from chapter to chapter. This installment is full of action and advances the overall story nicely. Characters that grew on me in previous books are now starting to worry me. New characters are becoming my favorites. The one constant is that the story is intriguing and leaves the reader - me - wanting more. Well done, indeed!

I so love this series.
Christopher's books just get better and better.
This book was an nice easy read, with enough battle and blood to suit those who like that and yet with the harmony of character's lives and interactions. A bit of romance, a bit of deceit, a lot of intrigue. Where will this go as nothing ever is predictable in these books. Keeps you on your toes!

This series just keeps getting better! The royal family you will love and hate! Romance, war, spiders, edge of your seat action…it’s all there. I found it hard to put down and now I’m impatiently waiting for the next book in the series.

It only gets more interesting. Though I do not understand Safina's reason for not working with Valens. Also I am kind of confused as to why she suddenly wants to be the empress.
