Onyx grew up in the projects of Atlanta where bills were always due and ends were never met. Surrounded by poverty and violence, the streets became a way of life. Instead of running from it, he jumped headfirst into the game. What started as survival turned into a high for money, power, and respect. Every dollar came with danger, every move drew more attention, and his enemies would rather see him six feet under than on top. As the battle to reign king of Atlanta pushed him to prove he was more than a street legend, he learned that walking away was never really an option.
If you’ve already read Onyx by Sie Nicole, this prequel is the missing piece you didn’t even realize you needed. It’s short, yes—but it’s full of emotional weight and context that completely reshapes how you view Onyx as a character.
We get to see what he’s been through before Serai ever entered the picture—his grief, his losses, and how the streets shaped him into who he became. It explains his protectiveness, his silence, and even his softness in the main story. It honestly made me love him even more.
If you haven’t read either book yet, I highly recommend starting with this one and then diving straight into Onyx. Together, they make a full picture of a man who had every reason to give up—but chose to love anyway.
Read the triggers at the beginning of the book prior to starting it. Onyx has been solid since a teenager. Raised in a two parent household with his younger sister. Onyx experienced a lot of things at such a young age. You will be on a roller coaster ride throughout the book. I was misting while reading.
Sidenote: You mean to tell me Onyx been knew India was weird from the beginning? He should have been cut her off.
Onyx is the man!!!!!! I knew I love him from Serai’s story. He was all about his family and making sure they were taken care of. His sister was his everything and I love their relationship!
This was a quick fast paced and very entertaining read. It was emotional and I had to take a minute. You will feel the pain that Onyx was feeling. This prequel will show you more of Onyx life and what made him the amazing man he is.
To be able to see Onyx’s humbled beginnings. If only he had rid himself of India from the time she showed who she was. Unfortunately, we had to learn of her first In Onyx. Circumstances made them Bosses but the street events showed him it was time to exit. Sie, you didn’t have to take me through it and make a pimp cry. It hurt so bad to witness this when Onyx came to his parents for dinner and this played out. And then the funeral. That was tough but it also means great writing. Can’t wait for Teflon’s story. Drake been eating a long time…lol!
This prequel was so good! We take a deep dive into why Onyx is the way he is. You feel his pain, his losses, and the way he’s had to carry so much from a young age.
It gave real depth and context. It explains why Onyx shows up the way he does later on, and it made his softness and loyalty hit even harder.
Quick read, emotional, and definitely sticks with you.
