Stale, flat and surface level everything

When I first started reading ‘Blackthorn Academy’ I wasn’t sure how much I’d really like it, but turns out, I absolutely loved this. I was a bit on the fence initially because I felt the characters were almost uncomfortable in their rolls. I quickly realized it behaved as a lot of new television/cable series do—it was finding its legs. Deadwood and Trueblood are two series that immediately come to mind that felt the same.
After those first few chapters, this book took off. There are moments of laugh out loud banter, toe tingling spice, heart warming declarations, heart pounding action, and head scratching confusion. Book 1 did not disappoint. Ready for book 2.

After those first few chapters, this book took off. There are moments of laugh out loud banter, toe tingling spice, heart warming declarations, heart pounding action, and head scratching confusion. Book 1 did not disappoint. Ready for book 2.

Dnf for now 20%
I've got to take a breather on this one. I am so sick of the "we need to make her hate us to keep her safe" trope. Like seriously! And then it's supposed to be A OK when she understands this. ... Maybe this author will somehow have the men not be totally cruel to the MFC, but I doubt it and I just won't continue to find out.
*There have to be better ways to add tension to a book.
I was already annoyed that she didn't put up any type of fight when they took her to the academy. Also, every single one of her supposed mates have basically been annoyed at being mated with her even though it's supposed to be this rare and special thing (minus the vampire).
Hmmm. I'm moving on for now. If I come back and end up liking this (cannot imagine) I'll update my rating.

I don’t know what took me so long to read this, but I actually enjoyed it….a lot. I’ve been looking for an Academy read that actually incorporates the university and learning into the story, and this definitely does that. It’s a partial slow burn, with it getting a lil spicy towards the end.
The FMC, Bechora, is strong willed, 20+, and fierce. A little oblivious at times, but it makes sense since she’s new to this world. We follow her as she progress through the university and learns more about herself and her powers.
The MMCs - there are 5 but we get the most insight into Gabriel (tormented vampire) and Zypher (cinnamon roll 😍) and start to learn more about Dante, Caulder, and Vallyn. Other than Zypher, they all fight against what they want, or rather who.
Despite how much is introduced in this story, I still wanted more info and background information on the guys. I feel like we know them at a very surface level - despite having their POVs as well.

I absolutely devoured *Blackthorne Academy: Year One*! Zoe Dunn has crafted a world that immediately pulls you in, mixing the fish-out-of-water trope with high-stakes supernatural politics.
The protagonist, Bechora (B), is a fantastic lead: she’s gritty, resilient, and realistic about her background, which makes her journey from a struggling human realm stripper to a powerful supernatural student so satisfying to watch. I loved that she didn't just magically know everything; her struggle to understand this new world felt genuine.
The guys in her orbit are distinct and intriguing. You have the golden-retriever energy of Zypher (the demon prince who is surprisingly sweet), the brooding and initial antagonist Gabriel, the stoic gargoyle Dante, the haughty fae prince Vallynn, and the grumpy-but-protective Professor Thrackborne. The "why choose" dynamic is building up perfectly, with each guy bringing a different energy to the group.
The magic system is interesting, particularly the concept of the Starcaller and how B’s powers manifest differently depending on who she is around. The trials at the end were intense and kept me on the edge of my seat especially the Labyrinth of Shadows.
If you love academy settings, fated mates, and a heroine who refuses to be a damsel in distress, this is a must-read. I am desperate to see what happens in Year Two now that the threats outside the academy are closing in!

What a great PNR, with shifters and an academy setting where they (supposedly) learn how to use their powers.
This is the first book in the series and a slow burn, mostly because the characters are still getting to know each other and there are so many secrets and unknowns.
I was captivated from the very beginning, whether through its constant twists and surprises or the emotions it triggered.
Our FMC finds herself in an unexpected and unusual situation and struggles to understand what is happening to her.
One day she’s living in the human world, the next she’s taken to an academy to learn how to control her powers. Anyone would question, “Powers? What powers? This is a joke, right?” She was no exception.
I loved her personality, but what she goes through is heartbreaking. She has good moments, but since this is only the beginning of the story, there’s a lot she doesn’t know.
She’s a true survivor. She faces situations with calmness and inner strength, like a warrior.
Many believe she doesn’t belong, even though she never asked for any of this. A very human trait is that when people are confronted with the unknown or something different, fear can make them cruel.
Anyone who takes the time to truly know her can see how deserving she is. She’s loyal and kind, even to those who don’t deserve it. Unfortunately for her, this trait puts her in difficult situations.
Still, she makes good friends and is not truly alone, even when circumstances make her feel that way—moments that had me screaming, “Where are they?”. Honestly, she should listen to her friends advice more.
I agreed with them, some people simply don’t deserve second chances or forgiveness.
Now, let’s talk about the MMCs. This is a reverse harem, so there are several of them, and they’re all very different.
That said, I need to warn you that most of them currently deserve to be hit with a few hardcover books and shaken—at the very least.
Their fear and secrets drove me crazy. Boys! If you were more honest with her, she might understand what’s happening and maybe stop seeing you as complete idiots.
The book ends with a cliffhanger that made me say, “Wait, what?” and “Oh!” I desperately need the next book.

I actually went into this one fairly blind since a friend of mine said hey sign up for this! We happen to have pretty similar taste so of course I did. I didn't regret it. The story starts with finding our FMC Bechora as a stripper in the human world, well to her the only world. Not to long later a dragon shifter finds her and brings her to the academy..... of course she expected that it was all a joke. Yeah, it's not. Her entire world is flipped upside and into chaos realizing she isn't just human she has magic.
The FMC definitely has some bite to her and I can appreciate that. I like the way she takes things in stride but also even in a new world isn't willing to just back down. Although at times that could also be a downside for her since well she knows nothing of this world. But I like her.
The MMC....... Zypher is great. Demon Prince. Between him and B I got plenty of laughs and some awwww moments because they are adorable. I like the match between them. Gabriel... Ugh okay I didn't like him because he was a total jerk but at the same time I can understand why once learning but also just still a jerk. But hey I grew to like him. The Fae Prince Vallyn (oh boy the spellings I might get wrong here) he's still questionable to me. His actions and thoughts need to catch up to each other. Caulder I like the professor. I'm definitely intrigued to see where everything is going to go between him and the FMC. Dante the Gargoyle. I gotta say that I was pretty stoked when a Gargoyle was in the story as I just feel they don't get enough attention.
Now the friends. I love her friends! Her new friends she makes Shadrie and Miles are fantastic and the best of friends she could ever need. I love a girl who's willing to stand up and fight for things that are right especially when it comes to her friends and that is Shadrie. Miles is the adorable and loving little book worm of a friend and he'd totally be my best friend too. I definitely loved a little bit of info at the end we get for Miles and I'm looking forward to the next book which I am hoping comes soon cause I want more from the world.

I always get a little nervous going into a fantasy book, worried there will be too much world-building to absorb before I can truly enjoy the story. That wasn’t the case here at all. The characters and backstory were easy to grasp, which made it so much easier to get swept up in everything happening.
Bechora is strong, sassy, and full of spunk, and I loved her immediately. Having grown up in the human realm, she’s suddenly thrust into the magic realm with the help of Professor Thrackborne, and watching her adjust was fascinating. At its core, this story is about Bechora discovering who she truly is and what she’s capable of, and it’s such a fantastic journey to be part of.
Her friendships with Shadrie and Miles were another highlight for me. They’re endlessly supportive, patient, and always there to help her learn everything she needs to survive in this new world. Even as chaos unfolds around them, they never waver, and that kind of loyalty was really comforting to read.
And then there are the boys... Caulder clearly wants Bechora badly, but his instinct is always to protect her as best he can. It feels like there’s a deeper connection there, but we’ll have to wait and see how it develops. Dante and Vallynn really intrigued me — the way they feel and act is strange, almost contradictory. I understand it, but it seems to go against the bonds they’re meant to uphold.
Zypher, though? Absolute angel. The way Bechora becomes his entire world completely melted me. I also appreciated that he didn’t insert himself into every situation; he allows her to fight her own battles so she can grow stronger. Gabriel, on the other hand, gave me total lovesick puppy vibes. I wanted him to win so badly, because his innocence and ignorance felt especially heartbreaking.
The trials were such an incredible part of the story, and I loved everything that came from them. This book left me desperate for the next installment - I need to know what happens next. I received this book as an ARC, and all thoughts shared are my honest opinion.

I loved this book from beginning to end! I love Bechora's attitude and how she gets thrown into the supernatural world. So many twists and turns on every page.
Bechora is a strong willed FMC that has obstacles she has to overcome while being forced to attend Blackthorne Academy. She has lived in the human realm her entire life and doesn't realize that she is actually a mage..or so we think. She makes a couple friends easily and they fill her in on the supernaturals of the Academy. Not only are there mean girls that make her life a living hell, but there are also her mates. Something she didn't know existed. One by one, they each find out who she is to them but only one decides to make it known to her and does his best to show he is worthy of their mating. He tells her of his world and his family and how their mating rituals work. He is the kindest demon and treasures her immensely.
Her other mates treat her like she is nothing to them but in reality she means a lot. Three of them are plotting to take down the Fae King and the other doesn't want anything to do with the mate bond for fear his father could use her against him. Slowly she shows how strong she is and how she stands up to each of them when all they do is look down on her. However, they are doing it to keep her safe.
Her two friends, Shadrie and Miles, are the first ones she meets at orientation at Blackthorne Academy. They quickly become best friends and they help Bechora understand the Academy and the supernaturals. Shadrie is protective of Bechora and will ice anyone that bullies her. Miles is a gentle soul and uses his knowledge to help find out what Bechora is. Together, they are friends that are inseparable.
Friends, mates, mean girls, classes, and combat training make Bechora overwhelmed but, in the end, she can rely on her friend and her demon mate. But a war is brewing and they are about to find out sooner rather than later that they will need to fight.

Holy
So I thought the book was pretty good. It had elements that made it an easy read. The world isnt overly described. The characters are easy to remember who is what (shifter, mage, vampire, elemental, etc). I loved the found family vibe. What I didn’t like was how niave she acted a lot of the time even though she’s been through some heavy stuff. She was a stripper for gods sake. She only stuck up for herself once and it was glorious.
Zoe Dunn wrote some really horrific potential mate bonds. They are absolutely horrendous to her. Even encouraging the type of hazing she experienced during her attack. Daena and her mean girl crew, secluded her, attacked her, restrained her, and used magic to mute her mate bond so he couldn’t feel her pain. At the time she thought they broke her bond. It was awful to read, and Daenas betrothed when confronted (because Aparently deep down he’s a good guy) he scoffed and encouraged it to the public. That’s like a free for all hazing. Interfering in a mate bond is a serious offense. She’s owed Daenas life. And her basturd betrothed is also Bechoras fated mate. Vallyin. I don’t know if Zoe will let it go as far as the whole school attempting to put her down and break her bond but I wouldn’t be surprised. Usually when a potential mate is in the book and they are absolutely dreadful to their mate, when they realize their error, there’s usually not enough grovelling. But this guy needs a whole book to recover from this. Dante too. And Caulder, but Vallyin is the worst of them all. I mean look at how Gabriel acted, he beat the rooten toots right out of her. And she forgave him after one vulnerable discussion. I did enjoy reading about the magical world she was now experiencing. Each chapter half way in seemed to trickle or maybe a sprinkle, tiny bits of information about who she is, and what she is. Her history comes to light in the trials. Instead of exams at the end of the year, they have magical trials. They survived thankfully. Can’t wait to read the next one.

Each chapter half way in seemed to trickle or maybe a sprinkle, tiny bits of information about who she is, and what she is. Her history comes to light in the trials. Instead of exams at the end of the year, they have magical trials. They survived thankfully. Can’t wait to read the next one.

This was kind of the perfect book to end and start the year. I’m still very new to this paranormal world, so a lot of things felt weird to me, but overall, I really enjoyed it.
The writing is easy to follow, which helped a lot. Since our main character knows nothing about the supernatural world, we learn everything alongside her, and I liked that approach. It made the story more accessible and less overwhelming.
One of my favorite parts was her relationship with her new group of friends. I genuinely liked their dynamic, and I was fully on edge thinking one of them was about to die. That’s always a good sign!
What I didn’t enjoy was the ending. Suddenly, we’re thrown into trials that are over in about 30 pages and meant absolutely nothing to me. I really wish that whole part hadn’t been included in this book, because it felt rushed and unnecessary.
Now, let’s talk about the romance, because there’s a lot going on here:
1. Gabriel (the vampire) was by far my favorite. I loved that he wasn’t immediately obsessed with her like everyone else. Learning more about his story was genuinely interesting.
2. Dante (the gargoyle and the prince’s guard) didn’t get much page time, but I have high expectations for him in future books.
3. Valynn (the prince) had understandable motivations, but he was honestly kind of boring. Still, I can see him becoming more interesting later on.
4. Zypher (the demon) was fine, but he was all over her from the start, and despite how much time we spent with him, we learned almost nothing about him.
5. Thrackborne (the dragon shifter) was a no for me. No vibe, barely present, nothing to grab onto.
Overall, this felt like a solid setup book. It wasn’t amazing, but it did its job, and I’m definitely curious to see where the next one goes.

It took me a few chapters to get into this one but once I had, I got really engrossed in the storyline and these characters.
Bechora is a compelling FMC; she's strong and feisty and not afraid to make her thoughts known, but we also see her uncertainties about her place in the magical world, which made me like her even more. I really liked that she doesn’t want everyone else to fight her battles for her, despite the fact that she’s got a lot to learn about her new reality. I can’t wait to see her growth in the next book.
I was immediately smitten with Zypher; he's a golden retriever with hints that he could be a rottweiler if needed. I so appreciated his positive, easy going and doting personality, perhaps not something you’d expect from the son of Lucifer. I loved that he was so eager to learn the human dating cultures to spoil Bechora. He’s a definite ten as a mate if you ask me.
The rest of her fated mates have some work to do to win me and Bechora over, but I’m confident they’ll be able to worm their way into our affections. Although some of them are reluctant at the moment, for reasons of their own, it’s clear that this group are going to be a force of nature once they’ve sorted things out.
I also adored Bechora's friends: Shadrie, who is loyal and protective; Miles, the quiet studious mage who's so endearing; and Geordie, the housemate who is B's adopted family, and who turns out to have his own secrets.
I'm totally invested in what happens next, especially after that ending. I feel like there’s going to be even more growly possessiveness to come in the future books and I am looking forward to it very much!

I'm a mood reader, and lately i'm in for paranormal why choose academy romance and this book was just what I needed.
Bechora is a human young woman from foster care that shares a flat with his best friend and foster brother. One day when she arrives home form work she gets an acceptance letter to an academy she didn't apply so she thinks that's a prank. And the next day when she exits from the strip club she works, there's a hunk of a man waiting for her next to her car. An that's when her life changes.
Blackthorne Academy is like a paranormal boarding school where she will meet her roommate and new best friend, a girl who will be helping her navigate the school dynamics and be one of her main cheerleaders.
This is a why choose so there are some love interests and as it will be going at a normal pace she won't be together with all of them at the end of the book even when there are some "moments" with each one.
I must say that I loved Zypher, the golden retriever demon prince because he is the only one who doesn't have problems to show everyone that she is his fated mate and try to woo her.
The other MMCs are Gabriel, a brooding vampire who initially hates her; Vallyn, the fae prince; Dante, Vallyn's best friend and a gargoyle; and porfessor Thrackborne, a grumpy dragon.
I really enjoyed how Bechora and her friends find out who she is, and how they survive the final tests at the academy. Because at Blackthorne academy there aren't normal exams, there are three tests and in each one there are students that doesn't return, and that's because they are dead.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Another new author for me. I picked this book via an ARC as the BLURB looked good, and it didn't disappoint.
Bechora, 'B' for short, was found wandering the streets as a child. Brought into the system, she didn't have friends until she met Geordie, when he was being bullied by bigger kids. From that day, they were best friends. As they got older, they shared an apartment, but they could be like ships that past in the night, because of different work commitments.
Suddenly, B is pulled into a life, a magical realm, that she never knew existed. From that day onwards, her life was taken on a different trajectory. As with any Academy, school, or college, there are cliques, and the main one you want to avoid is the mean girls one, especially the ones who think they are above everyone else. They will try and make your life a living hell. But B grew up on the streets, and she knows not to show fear. Will this be enough to keep them at bay? She is also trying to learn about magic, and what her specialist area is, and to top it all off, she then finds out about the 'mate' bond and what that entails. This pushes her even more into the crosshairs of the mean girls, especially when she snags one of the most eligible ones in the Academy. Plus, she is trying to find out more about who she is and what her magic means for her and her future.
The book leaves us on an end-of-year cliffhanger. How will she fare when she goes back for Year 2? I can't wait to find out.

Bechora starts this book with nothing going for her except survival instincts and a sharp tongue, so dropping her into a supernatural academy full of ancient power plays immediately works. She does not glide into this new world gracefully. She stumbles, pushes back, and questions everything.
What really pulled me in was the balance between mystery and the character development. The academy itself is dangerous (the students speculate it's sentient), which leads to some good intrigue, but the found family elements are really where this book shined for me. Bechora’s friendships feel genuine, and I loved that her friends often figure things out alongside her instead of being left in the dark.
The why choose dynamic is still very much in progress. Zypher was an easy favorite with his open affection and humor, while the rest of the group clearly has work to do. The slow burn feels good without feeling frustrating, and the chemistry builds more through tension and banter than constant spice. The darker academy vibe keeps everything grounded even when the romance starts heating up.
I closed the book wanting answers and the next installation in the series immediately. It sets up the larger story well without feeling incomplete, and I am absolutely looking forward to continuing the series.

In the beginning I got Harry Potter vibes. There were things like sorting into houses and a few other nuances that were reminiscent of Harry Potter.
However, as far as RH paranormal novels go - the author checked off every box: unsuspecting powerful supernatural - check, multiple male partners; not all who were eager to be in a relationship - check, mean girls with a powerful support system -check, Hot professor who is also included in the harem -check, action- check, evil villain- check, romance with steamy scenes -check, surviving the odds and rising above adversity (the end of year trials)- check.
I’m a huge fan of Authors like Jaymin Eve, KF Breene, Katie May, Eva Chase, Meg Xuemi X and Dannika Dark. I love reverse harem, paranormal romances. I placed Zoe Dunn up there with the greats.
I couldn’t put the novel down. I see that book 2 will be coming out later on in the year and I cannot wait.

As I was reading this book, my attention was really drawn to our FMC, Bechora. I felt like Zoe Dunn made Bechora feel so relatable which is something I really love experiencing in a book. Bechora knew how to roll with the punches and wasn’t afraid to explore the new world that she found herself in. She had a lot of learning to do and she took each day step by step to learn to navigate this new world that she was thrown into. Seeing how she was willing to make the best of her new world, I was especially intrigued when we started to meet the men that were going to be surrounding her during her time at the academy.
There were 5 other MMCs were such a treat getting to know! Considering how each of them were completely different in terms of what they are and their personalities, it was so fun seeing how they all interacted around one another. Everything about these MMC’s and Bechora blended so well together and made for an amazing start to this why choose trope which happens to be a guilty pleasure of mine. Not only did all of our main characters catch my attention, but the academy setting and the magic system all wrapped this story up into a beautiful little package that made for a great start to the series!

This one started really good. Towards the middle though it just got repetitive. Go to school go to the library go home. Found myself skimming a bunch that didn’t add at all to the storyline. A good 50 pages could have been removed and you wouldn’t have even noticed a difference.
The plot of the prince and dragon going to rescue people was pretty much forgotten except for a few moments. They built the king up to being horrible but you never saw any action or anything besides words saying that. A lot of talk but no actual action.
I’m my opinion, the main character Bechora was spineless and a negative Nelly. Constantly saying the negative What Ifs with her friends having to chastise her into apologizing for being so negative.
She never stood up for herself ever. When she was attached, you’d think there would be some grand moment where she finally stopped letting everyone walk all over her but nothing happened. Nothing!
Also, it was talked about working on her powers but never on the page. It just seemed to be a background talk to keep us informed.

Blackthorne Academy was such an AMAZING read! Going into this advanced copy, I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but wow, I was completely hooked from start to finish. This is one of those books you can’t put down because every chapter pulls you in deeper.
The plot twists kept me fully engaged, and I genuinely loved all of the characters. This is one academy I would happily attend and repeat a year at. I could not put this book down. I was completely enthralled. There were so many twists and turns, surprises and secrets. I just had to keep reading. The FMC is such a badass. She’s confronted with a whole new world and goes through some truly gut wrenching things, but comes out the other side stronger and more herself. Despite being faced with cruelty and betrayal she is loyal and kind. The MMCs can be so infuriating but we love to hate them, or hate to love them - I’m not sure which. They are all so different but similar at the same time. And while their secrecy and fear might be understandable I just want to grab them by the shoulders and shake them until they come to their senses. Except for Zypher - he’s my favorite and I love how open he is with his affection for Bechora. The world building and character development is absolutely phenomenal. It really pulls the story along and leaves you craving more. I must know what happens next and can’t wait for the next book to come out.

Bechora begins the story surviving day to day with a traumatic past and no memory of where she came from—only to have her entire world flipped upside down when she’s taken to a supernatural academy. Dragons, vampires, fae, demons, gargoyles… this book truly has it all. Watching Bechora discover that she isn’t just magical—but something rare and powerful—was so compelling. She’s fierce, stubborn, and doesn’t back down from bullies or deadly trials, even when she’s thrown into a world she doesn’t understand.
The side characters add so much depth, from loyal new friends who become her found family to complicated love interests who are equal parts frustrating and intriguing. The slow-burn tension, layered secrets, and constant twists kept me turning the pages, and that cliffhanger ending left me needing book two immediately (already preordered!). If you love academy settings, supernatural politics, strong heroines with bite, and a touch of reverse harem tension, this is a fantastic start to a series.

I read this as an ARC, and now I am so disappointed that I have to wait for the next book to be written. Bechora's life isn't easy, she is an exotic dancer with no education and no prospects. Then she is taken to a different realm, where she is told supernatural beings exist and she is one of them. This sounds pretty similar to many other books, but it does have it's own story to tell. Bechora is a smart mouthed FMC who doesn't back down when bullies try to intimidate her. She makes two awesome friends, especially Shadrie, who is very protective of her. Fated mates, Reverse Harem, reluctant mates, a golden retriever mate, deadly trials, and a mysterious Fate, this book has them all. Zephyr is my newest book boyfriend, and I can't wait to see more of him in the next book. I had a hard time putting this book down, and did so only so I could keep my job. I can't wait until the next book.

Holy hell, hold on to your hats ladies & gents cause this wild ride almost makes Hogwarts look tame! I couldn't put this down, I read it all in a day! First off, these names are all so damn cool! I'm almost certain I'm pronouncing them all wrong except for Dante 😅. Bechora is a badass and I can't wait for her to bring the chaos and save the realm! Shadrie & Miles are literally the bestest besties ever! And out of Bechora's 3 claimed mates, Zypher is my absolute favorite! This book has it all folks; magic, angst, betrayal, love, yearning, friendship, and chaos all in one. It does end on a cliffy, right at the good part! Danea and her band of harpies will get whats coming to them, and I can't wait to see it. I'm chomping at the bit to know what comes next for our beloved crew!

This book is a slow burn, enemies to lovers, why choose, and fated mates happening in an academy setting. Bechora was found in the human realm as a toddler all on her own and learned to take care of herself. At twenty three she was working at a strip club and was leaving work when a man was waiting by her car. He opened a portal and dropped her at Blackthorn Academy which is a school for supernatural students. She soon learns that her magic is different than anyone else’s and must enlist her friends to help her discover the truth.
I enjoyed the story and characters in this book and am looking forward to book two. The FMC is a bit of a bad ass who tries her best to not let others tear her down or stoop to their level. The MMCs are great as well and I can’t wait to see where the relationships are going.

First word that comes to mind is WOW. I’m always a sucker for a good paranormal academy why choose. So when I read the description for this one I HAD to read it. Very much exceeded my expectations. Phenomenal read! Absolutely obsessed with most of the MMCS. Really strong FMC and I enjoy how she doesn’t follow the typical fated mates time line. That was refreshing to read. The side characters are elite tbh. The banter and little commentary mixed within the twists and turns and the suspense in this book was so incredibly well written. The slow burn leading to hot HOT spice was everything!! Will be recommending this book to EVERYONE once out, and definitely buying a physical copy for the shelf. Great great book and I’m SOOOOO ready for book TWO!!!

4.5 stars. This book sucked me in and did not let go until the very last page. The pacing was really unexpected, but I think I liked it? I'm so used to trials being drawn out over an entire book that 60 pages felt really short, but also accomplished everything that needed to be accomplished. There is so much happening that I felt a little lost at times trying to remember which characters knew what information, which is the only reason this isn't 5 stars.
I love a good crumb trail and this book had me blindly following it into the woods. I still have so many questions but I also got so many answers. The author gives just enough info to be a tease, but not enough to know what is going to happen next. The ending isn't quite a cliffhanger since it does come to a natural conclusion, but there are definitely still some wtf moments.

This was a great paranormal academy read, with an fmc brought from the human realm to an academy peopled with all the supernatural races. Her fate entwined with the strongest males there. I know it’s a familiar trope, but when it’s done well it’s fantastic and this is done really well.
The fmc, is trying to be strong and she develops well, the friends she makes are awesome and they are the ones who find out what she is, before she’s told by some powerful entity or other.
Her mates are idiots, with the exception of one. I understand what they’re trying to do, but they go about in a way that makes you want to shake them.
It’s a bit YA, too mild in the spice department for me. I’m not downvoting it though, there’s plenty of angsty tension going on, which I loved.
Good ending, not a cliffhanger, more a foreshadowing of evil!

This book kept me invested and wanting to know more until the end! I liked the range of the mmcs' personalities, enjoyed Bechora's personality and character development and the plot overall. I enjoyed the world building Zoe Dunn has created and really look forward to finding out more in the next book. The trials for the end exam were interesting and looking forward to any future ones we might see. As the start of a new academy series, I can recommend it if you love: stubborn males, a mentally strong fmc, future grovelling and academy settings!
Zypher was the fab green flag love interest we love to see whose all in from the start. Gabriel and the others do have more grovelling to do overall until they will be forgiven. Caulder has done lovely gestures so looking forward to his future actions.
